The dems are in a weird sort of puerile panic and hysteria. They are losing it with wild and rather vicious talk about Palin's various supposed misdemeanors, Obama's campaign itself that is suddenly shrilly whining and screaming about lies and liars, when Obama himself is not gaffing like Biden with silly lipstick riffs and arrogant dismissals of small town mayorships (and after his Pennsylvania clingers speech no less!)—all while liberal bloggers, the MSM columnists, the talking heads on CNN, MSNBC, etc are losing their sanity seeing Karl Roves everywhere stealing their hope and change dreams.
Watching some of this hysterical outpouring of anger is surreal, as grown-ups sound like children whose mothers did not buy them a snack or failed to take them to the zoo as promised.

NYTimes opinion page goes after Palin today. I especially liked this LTE:
Thomas L. Friedman quotes John Maxwell, a leadership expert, as saying about Sarah Palin, “I think there are a lot of women out there that look at her, holding her baby, talking about being a hockey mom, and say, ‘She knows what I feel; she’s going through what I am going through.’ ”
The question for them is: “Am I ready to be vice president of the United States?”

megisi--actually that quote had to do with the inaccurate McCain mailer sending people to the wrong clerk for absentee ballot info, primarily households they pulled off the Democratic voting list, not the state AG's lawsuit challenging lists containing the one million voters who've registered since Jan 06;
Mark Jefferson, executive director of the state GOP, said the mailing is not intended to keep people from the polls and that the wrong absentee ballot applications resulted from incorrect information in databases used for the mailing.
"You do the best with the lists you have, and no list is perfect," Jefferson said. "There is certainly no type of suppression effort going on."

From Prof Wombat, near the end of the old thread:
It's worth thinking about the West Point Honor Code. Not tolerating someone who lies means, if taken on face value, that if you're caught, say, bragging about Saturday evening exploits, you get thrown out of Woo Poo. So either there's discretion, or there's rigidity to the extent that human interaction becomes impossible.
So such a code requires--not implies, requires--that a level of tolerance for lying be arrived at socially, with no controls whatever otherwise. It thereby demands hypocrisy. It places group cohesion, for better or for worse--and anybody who's ever been in the military has seen both--before all else, which, on its face, is quite the opposite of the intent of such a code.
The West Point motto is Duty, Honor, Country. The order of these three is vitally important, and far from a casual construction. Duty, to one's fellows, comes before honor.
Words of wisdom. Maintaining group solidarity is, for better or for worse, and yes, I've seen them both, number one.
Before any allegiance to truth.

I think it had something to do with perpetual war = perpetual war powers for the president.
Certainly true. But, can't forget that a very high percentage of this administration wanted to turn Iraq into a laboratory for Friedman's economic ideas.
They were going to make a model capitalist state of the country, and if one looks at the history of the Chicago school, that translates into a smash and grab job. They wanted to use the chaos to privatize assets at fire sale prices--and they did for a while, until the chaos they created to obscure the theft overwhelmed them, and Talibani upset their apple cart by insisting on elections.

"Obama: John McCain is “cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history.”
In a shift from the apolitical tone the presidential candidates took during Hurricane Gustav, Barack Obama did not temper his rhetoric Saturday, as his spokesman accused John McCain of “cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history.”
“John McCain wants to have a debate about national security let’s have that debate. I warned that going into Iraq would distract us from Afghanistan. John McCain cheer-leaded for it. John McCain was wrong and I was right,” Obama told a screaming New Hampshire crowd.
“The McCain-Palin ticket, they don’t want to debate the Obama-Biden ticket on issues because they are running on eight more years of what we’ve just seen. And they know it,” Obama said. “As a consequence what they’re going to spend the next seven, eight weeks doing is trying to distract you.
“They’re going to talk about pigs and they’re going to talk about lipstick, they’re going to talk about Paris Hilton, they’re going to talk about Britney Spears. They will try to distort my record and they will try to undermine your trust in what the Democrats intend to do.” [...]

Pakistan pursues diplomacy with US on border raids (AP)
Since Aug. 13, there have been at least seven reported missile strikes, as well as the ground forces operation, in tribally governed territory where the government has little control. The border region is considered a likely hiding place for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri.
Top government officials indicated Pakistan was trying to avoid an outright confrontation with Washington, its ally and financial supporter, after the main opposition party suggested the country should consider dropping out of the war on terror if cross-border attacks continue.
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani told reporters late Friday Pakistan would prefer to resolve any issue with Washington through diplomatic channels, adding that the issue will be discussed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York later this month.
"Due to this American policy, the tribal people will join militants and our work will be damaged," he said hours after the latest missile strike. "We will not allow anyone to interfere inside our country.
"It is not that we will launch any attack. We will try to convince America, we will try to convince Britain that they should respect the sovereignty of Pakistan, and God willing, we will be able to convince them."
However, Pakistan's army chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has vowed to protect the country's sovereignty "at all cost."
A group of tribal elders representing about a half-million people in the North Waziristan area, where most of the missile attacks have occurred, threatened Saturday to join forces with Taliban militants in Afghanistan.
"If America doesn't stop attacks in tribal areas, we will prepare an army to attack U.S. forces in Afghanistan," chief tribal elder Malik Nasrullah told a news conference in Miran Shah, the area's largest city. "We will also seek support from the tribal elders in Afghanistan to fight jointly against America."

Speaking of the surge, why is it that the media never tells us how the US governments paying money to different tribes to not fight and Al Sadr's cease fire aren't directly related to the success of the surge?
Yet we are led to believe the so called success of the surge can be directly attributed to our bestest, most greatest general ever, General Betrayus.

Nixon, like Eisenhower, would be characterized as fucking Liberals by today's standards.
Nixon only started the chipping away process, so he couldn't get away with being as blatantly wingnut as today's folks, in particular when it comes to social programs.
As I stated upthread, today's GOP is the culmination of the processes he set in motion.
It's worth pointing out that he originally got elected to congress in 1946 by using a smear campaign worthy of Karl Rove.
In the '50's, he, like Joe McCarthy, used fear to advance GOPer ends. Then it was commies, today GOPers use muslims for the same ends.
Perhaps Nixon's most important contribution is his invention of the southern strategy.

And the smears keep on coming. Here's liberal talk radio host Randi Rhodes on Palin:
She’s the woman who shows up at the kid’s birthday party and starts opining about everything from politics to lawn care. This is the woman that knows it all. Will shout you down, will get revenge on you. That’s who she is.
She’s friends with all the teenage boys. You have to say no when your kids say, ‘can we sleep over at the Palin’s? No! NO!’

"And hardware with no known workable driver in the civilized world."
It is kind of funny. I have an older scanner at home that was standard issue. Had not used it in many, many moons. Went through a nightmare trying to get the drivers to work with my XP unit that had been updated by Windows Patches many time. Got it, but the software was flakey.
Plugged it into my Mac Book, no problemo.
There is a lesson in that.

I just finished reading an interesting article about Cindy McCain by Ariel Levy in the Sept. 15 New Yorker. Insightful, to say to least.
I think I heard her on NPR. The McCains are alot of things. A typical american family is not one of them. Which may be fine because after all who is? But they're trying to portray themselves one way to appeal to the Heartland (argh) and they are something else entirely.

South of Galveston, authorities said 67-year-old Ray Wilkinson was the only resident who didn't evacuate from Surfside Beach, population 800. He was drunk and waving when authorities reached him on Saturday morning.
"He kinda drank his way through the night," Mayor Larry Davison said.

2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: Heb. 11.4
5 but unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door: and unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
8 ¶ And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?

I am SOOO tired of cops treating their own better than everyone else:
Among the dead, officials confirmed, was a police officer, Spree Desha, 35. When her identity was learned, all officers on the scene formed lines, stood at attention and saluted in silence as her body, covered in a white sheet, was lifted down a ladder and placed with 10 other victims a short distance from the tracks.

McCain aide Kimmie Lipscomb told reporters on Sept. 10 that an outdoor rally in Fairfax City, Virginia, drew 23,000 people, attributing the crowd estimate to a fire marshal.
Fairfax City Fire Marshal Andrew Wilson said his office did not supply that number to the campaign and could not confirm it. Wilson, in an interview, said the fire department does not monitor attendance at outdoor events.
In recent days, journalists attending the rallies have been raising questions about the crowd estimates with the campaign. In a story on Sept. 11 about Palin's attraction for some Virginia women voters, Washington Post reporter Marc Fisher estimated the crowd to be 8,000, not the 23,000 cited by the campaign.

Humanists are suing the government's exam agency over its decision to prevent a board giving humanism equal status to faiths in a religious education GCSE.
The OCR board had proposed allowing children to study humanism in as much depth as Christianity, Islam and Judaism in the GCSE but the move was barred by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority's regulator Ofqual. It said the syllabus put forward meant students would be able to study only humanism, rather than any of the major religions, which meant it did not fulfil their regulatory criteria.
The British Humanist Association (BHA), backed by supporters including Philip Pullman and AC Grayling, this week issued proceedings for a judicial review, claiming it was discriminatory and in breach of the QCA's own criteria and the European convention on human rights, which gives non-religious beliefs equal status. Andrew Copson, BHA director of education, said: "It threatens to turn back the progress of recent decades towards a more inclusive, educationally valid and objective subject of RE."
Humanism has been included in RE for more than 30 years. The OCR curriculum would have been the first time it was given equal weighting to religions in a GCSE.

Simels Porn:
Steve wandered sprightly into the Irish bar where he presumed the Drinking Liberally event was to be held. Sadly he was misinformed. Nonetheless, Steve stood there at the bar, friendly to a fault.
The half-Irish, half-English barkeep launched into a long joke the point of which was the inferiority of non-Irish Catholics. As the barkeeps arms flailed an aged Dago hooker came up to Steve.
"Hey, Handsome," she purred. She subsequently began hacking violently and ended up spitting her dentures into her half-finished glass of Irish whiskey.
When she finished, she rolled a billous eye at Steve.
"Wanna, good-time, Handsome?"
Yes, in fact Steve wanted a good-time.
