Are you planning to terrorize the fish today? Or just "think?"

Gravatar"Darcy Burner grew up in a blue collar military family in rural towns across America. She started with next to nothing ...."

Ok now if it is true that Burner was in a military family her father a retired Air Force veteran then it may be questionable about the "next to nothing" claim.

Military personnel and their families are in many ways taken care of quite adequately. Elementary schools on the bases are low in teacher to student ratios compared to public schools.

The tax free low cost Commissary/PX benefits are very good. Health care, housing allowances, college tuition grants, and many other freebies would seem to be counter to an almost poverty existence.

So, though I have been marked by Duncan as a troll, it just seems smart to actually evaluate these claims on their merit. If I can pick these potential discrepancies out, surely a well financed Republican opponent can too.

Would a fully retired Air Force veteran like Burner's father be at risk for a medical bills financial disaster? I suspect this might not be exactly true, won't someone question the veracity of Burner's web site info.

GravatarIs there a clueless sauce that Democrats in the Senate have to drink each morning.

From Max:
"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) quickly dismissed President Bush's attempt to compare the war in Iraq to past military conflicts in East Asia ignores the fundamental difference between the two," he said. "Our nation was misled by the Bush administration in an effort to gain support for the invasion of Iraq under false pretenses, leading to one of the worst foreign policy blunders in our history.")

GravatarMSNBC was reporting repeatedly about the Amtrak
Acela's 55% share of Washington/NY/Boston business traffic yesterday, attributing it to the airlines' recent dreadful on-time performance - but whining about the longer journey on train - but it seems to me if you factor in getting to and from the airports, going thru security, and all the hassles involved; the trains, running downtown to downtown, are the clear winner. And, as Moe might note, much more earth-friendly, no matter the source of their power than planes.

Sure; it's ass-backwards. The violence exists because there's no political reconciliation available. It has to work the other way -- the Iraqi people who long for peeance and freeance and a pony have to actually behave as though that's a possibility.

Otherwise it's just a huge, bloody game of whack-a-mole with our troops in the middle.

:::Investigations were under way Saturday into the killing of three British soldiers in a bomb dropped by a US fighter jet and intended for Afghanistan's Taliban rebels.

The "friendly fire" incident in the southern province of Helmand late Thursday was one of the deadliest in a string of such mistakes in the intensifying international campaign against the Al-Qaeda-backed Taliban.

The British soldiers were struck by a bomb dropped by a US F-15 jet called in to help during a fierce battle near the massive Kajaki Dam, which troops are fighting to secure from the hardline Taliban militia.

Three were killed outright and two wounded. The injured were Saturday at the main British base in Afghanistan, Camp Bastion in Helmand, awaiting repatriation.:::

GravatarI didn't much care for LA. Not because of the size, or even the car culture (I had no problem taking the bus or walking pretty much everywhere I had to go). What bothered me was the plasticity of the place, and the people.

GravatarI was trying to wait up for the Tigers -v- Yankees game to begin.

Went 11 innings, and lasted until 0330.

Gravatar"What bothered me was the plasticity of the place, and the people."

Isn't that like complaining about all the gambling in Vegas?

GravatarAs Reagan was dying, and the TV newspeople set up all around his LA house, I realized what a verdant, lovely place that part of town is -- something you don't normally think about regarding LA.

GravatarVegas is pretty plastic, too; with that faux New York, and all.

Gravatarplantsman,

Do you work at/own a nursery -- do landscaping?

GravatarLots of cool places in LA. Griffith Park is great. I used to walk over the hill, from Westwood to the valley, every couple of days, just for the hell of it.

GravatarThe canyons between LA and the Valley are actually very nice ... rustic, woodsy. The hills above the city are nice, too. The beach are obviously nice. But the basin? Not so much.

Gravatar"Vegas is pretty plastic, too; with that faux New York, and all."

Kinda why I like it as a place to visit. Wouldn't live there full time though. Besides, it is changing again and I am not sure if it is my cup of tea anymore.

GravatarUsed to manage and run a nursery, but put way too much of my time and soul into it. Extreme hypertension and a mild stroke took care of that; body won't tolerate the physical part of landscaping anymore.

GravatarBritain has become a Clockwork Orange:

There are 3,200 private homes on the Croxteth Park estate. But its neat avenues and closes are bookended by Norris Green and Croxteth, areas that know the meaning of deprivation. Both districts have their gangs: the Crocky Eds and the Nogzy Eds. And they loathe each other.

GravatarGreat. Weatherman: "Will feel like 100+ this afternoon."

How outrageous will the rhetoric have to get before the Malkins, the Hewitts, and all the rest of them say “Wait a minute- that crosses the line?”
I am betting they will never find a line they will not cross- this is not about Iraq or domestic politics anymore. This isn’t about the soldiers and it isn’t about the prospect of Democracy in Iraq. This is about being “right” in the face of evil leftists. This is about “winning.” This is not about what these policies and this vile rhetoric are doing to this nation and our standing- this is about saving face and their own personal stake in what they have attached themselves to in the course of achieving “victory.”:::

I suppose she could say, "Put 'em all up against the wall and shoot 'em," but even she wouldn't allow that to be memorialized anywhere.

Note that I didn't say she wouldn't think it -- or say it in friendly company. Just that she won't memorialize it.

GravatarI talked to a "liberal hawk" journalist friend last night who just got back from Iraq. And he said one thing that made absolute sense, which is that the U.S. will NEVER leave Iraq — that is, no administration, Repub or Dem, will ever surrender the Green Zone, the airports, or the fourteen bases. Not. Going. To. Happen. That's what we all need to understand.

GravatarHoekstra: Victory, Then Democracy, in Iraq
It's more important for Iraq to be stable and secure than to have a democratic government, U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra said Friday.

Hoekstra, the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, said the United States needs an ally in Iraq that will help it fight radical jihadists -- and not necessarily a democracy -- which is contrary to the goals of the Bush administration and a change of opinion for Hoekstra.

He said he would like to see a democracy develop over time, but said that can best happen when the Iraqi people feel safe. Americans need to focus first on battling jihadists, the Holland congressman said.

Why did we go to war, then? Democracy was one of Bush's central goals. We've failed miserably.

That's what happens when you conjure up George and Dick's wild adventure based on lies.

GravatarDiane,

You're right and I don't think they'll return either, except to try to claim that property QL mentioned.

But the result there is going to be the same as when I try to go claim my ancestral properties in Sicily and in lower Manhattan, which is to say, they will be laughed (or forced) out of Cuba.

GravatarCurly has world-class ear flattening skillz!

GravatarThis is about being “right” in the face of evil leftists. This is about “winning.” This is not about what these policies and this vile rhetoric are doing to this nation and our standing- this is about saving face and their own personal stake in what they have attached themselves to in the course of achieving “victory.”:::

Perfectly dreadful idea; therefore, sounds like a plan.

GravatarPlease don't give Shrub any ideas.

GravatarRandom thought:

But 12 homes were completely destroyed here in Michigan in Eaton County yesterday afternoon, and several more were damaged.

The homes that were destroyed looked to be in a modern surburban neighborhood - not exactly the size of McMansions, but certainly larger than a cracker-jack box house.

What amazed me was the quality of construction. These houses could have been made by two of the three pigs from "The Three Little Pigs" fable, the homes built of straw and sticks. There was nothing left of these newer homes, and the construction was absolutely a sham.

We are not America, the well-built these days.

Gravatarplantsman! You have to eat more than that OR you have to eat more frequently. Eating too little is one sure way to go hypoglycaemic in two shakes.

Gravatar There was nothing left of these newer homes, and the construction was absolutely a sham.

They're made of beaverboard and styrofoam and stucco. It's absolutely crazy.

Gravatarplantsman, How do you tolerate legumes, rice, etc?

TJ's has these great (I know it sounds icky, but it is NOT) pouch-packed Indian meals. All natural. Delicious. You eat 'em over rice. No sugar. Lentils. Chick peas. All kinds of legumes. Very filling, too. You just heat them (in boiling water) and eat 'em over rice.

GravatarHell, those Miami Cubans are already armed and ready to go. I'm sure they have the whole thing planned out.

GravatarThe heat index here will 105. Humidity ridiculously high. We may skip the vigil. Developing.

Gravatar(I usually eat a nice mixed salad with my half sammich.)

GravatarThat's right, plantsman. 5 meals a day. South Beach diet has good info on keeping blood sugar even with reduced intake of food. The method started out as a medical treatment.

I know what you're talking about. The biggest construction craze in Los Angeles right now is slap-dash apartments and condos built right next to the various light rail stations.

Good idea, bad execution, especially in this earthquake prone area.

GravatarThey're made of beaverboard and styrofoam and stucco. It's absolutely crazy.

Yes, crazy it is. And when you think about the extreme temperatures we have here - 100 in the Summer, -15 in the Winter - it seems like those cheap homes would not be energy efficient.

GravatarFrom Italian journalist:

"There is a lot of suspicion that these fires and previous fires from the summer have been set by arsonists. The suspicion is that people are setting fires in order to clear land for new developments."

Sad to see those olive groves go.

GravatarLegumes, well in moderation. Still have starchy carbs that must be accounted for.

GravatarThat is what all those rethug Cubans in Florida have been waiting for I think for all these decades. Dirty water seems to float at the top.

Gravatarres - those are delicious, but very high carb - and carbs are metabolised as sugar.

Something I did not know before I began the diabetic road was how severe and widespread diabetes was thruout India. It's not clear why, but it's surely predominant.

GravatarYes, I am aware that they are carbs and the way they are metabolized. However, after living with a diabetic for 25 years I know that some diabetics tolerate (or do not tolerate) different carbs in different ways, e.g., Daddy res could deal with legumes (except peas) quite well, Rice, not so much. Brown rice: better. Pasta: not at all.

GravatarIn his wandering around the globe in "The World Without US" Weisman goes to Crete. Englishmen have been buying up the Turkish-occupied coast line and building shoddy vacation homes. Much of the building material is taken from ancient nearby buildings. The construction is so bad, and the land titles so tentative (no country recognizes the occupation), that the houses are guarenteed for just *five* years. After that, all bets are off. For that, an entire ecological and historical gem is being destroyed.

GravatarGood morning.

Those Miami Cubans are going no fucking where.
They know they never had it so good. They might try to reclaim their lost property but have as good a chance as a snowball has of surviving in hell.
However if Fidel dies before Cuckoo Bananas leaves office there might be some American Imperialist move in that direction. After all the U.S. has been lusting after Cuba since James Madison's time.

GravatarAmong alcohol, beer is carbiest, then wine, then liquor.

GravatarMy dad could not tolerate wine at all. Brown liquors were off limits, too. But gin -- sweet gin -- he could deal with a shot of that a day.

GravatarIraq forever. We will be there forever. True, we have to fight this. But it's sobering to think that NO ONE in the current race will EVER abandon the Green Zone, the airports, or the bases. Simply not in the cards, and I wish some journalist would ask the Dems point blank: What do you intend to do about the 14 bases?

GravatarI drink vodka + diet tonic in moderation. Wine's different, but you should be able to enjoy it sparingly. In my body, alcohol does not seem to affect my blood sugar much. Results may vary.

GravatarI've been wondering for a while what would happen when Fidel kicks the bucket.

The people who were adults in the first wave of immigration are old to dead now; the kids who came then have children and grandchildren. There are the Marielitos, but I'm not even sure how many of them would want to go back.

I know there's all kinds of paramilitary activity, but I'm not really sure how many bodies they could pull together to launch something like an invasion, and not sure how much enthusiasm in general for going back.

GravatarYes, a bunch of fat old wingnuts with guns are going to go reclaim Cuba. Will be most amusing.

Well, the Americans have an army too. Not much of one, but one nonetheless.

I'd place money on it.

GravatarThis administration might think it a jolly afternoon's work to start another commie defeat intended war. Just retread the Commie threat.

GravatarAs a Cuban friend of mine in grad school once said, even if they could go back, it would be civil war and ethnic cleansing, for a couple of reasons. (1) If every nostalgic Cuban who claimed their family owned 5000 acres were telling the truth, the island would have to be the size of Australia, and (2) the "nice (read "white") ones were the ones who left: the island is full of "darkies" now (Miami is the only pace I ever heard that word used in conversation). They'd have to be put down and dispossessed before the rightful owners could return. Not pretty.

GravatarAfter all the U.S. has been lusting after Cuba since James Madison's time.

The number of detainees held by the American-led military forces in Iraq has swelled by 50 percent under the troop increase, up to 24,500 today from 16,000 in February,

Mostly Sunni, 1,800 are Al Queda, 6,000 religious fanatics.

The vast majority are not inspired by jihad or hate for the coalition or Iraqi government — the vast majority are inspired by money.

The men are paid by insurgent leaders. “The primary motivator is economic — they’re angry men because they don’t have jobs,”

GravatarStephen Hayes is a slimy lying piece of shit.

I only wish that Tim Robbins had slapped him.

GravatarRomney is also suggesting that the money for health care should come from what is now used to cover the uninsured. Fairly simple calculations show that a) it will not be enough (because people will consume more when insured) and b) there will still be uninsured people (because Romney wouldn't make insurance obligatory) and then there would be no money to cover those people who I guess would just die in front of ERs.

No comment necessary.

GravatarThe major problem with Romney's plan is that he isn't showing where the money would come from. He's also not stipulating that people who can afford it must buy insurance (because of that libertarian thing), which means that there won't be funding and there will still be some uninsured people. Or many, depending on how the tax breaks are done.

"Were it not for the fact that Ms. Zahn and Mr. Cohen's marriage is ending, Mr. Cohen might never have been called to account for, among other things, the dubious investments he made with her money," the suit charges.

if you haven't, be sure to read the letter soliciting the funds. he promises you'll be rewarded in heaven.

he is shameless. it will be interesting to see if there's actually a response to this.

GravatarWhat is Ted and his wife studying pray tell?

Gravatar"And wrapped in an enigma."

let me get out my decoder ring: "be sure to drink your ovaltine."

hmmmm...enigma solved.

GravatarWhat'll it be, Ralphie?

GravatarGonna get my mane shorn. See ya later. Mwah.

I think they're going to be therapists. Long line of folks waiting to get some of that action, no doubt.

Ted & Ted's Wife: They're called Federally Insured Student Loans. Look into them.

GravatarTed could go into the meth and massage business. He has experience.

GravatarOT(s) but,

I liked that 17 year old kid sabotaging the iphone so he could hook it up to any network. And new businesses springing up to cook the iphone with software, fooling it into thinking it's connected to AT&T instead of network X.

NYT article concludes that soon our cells won't be network restricted.

GravatarMasters in Scamming.

IOW, Management.

GravatarChimpy's allies

NYT --Similar bands of Sunni “guardians,” as the American military often calls them, have formed in Diyala Province and in Sunni areas in and around Baghdad.

Leaders from the groups have said they would like to join the government, but according to some American officers working with the groups, their most common demand has consisted of three things: money, guns and freedom of movement. It is unclear what they will do if they are not given what they consider a fair share of power.

Gravatarsimels,

I think it's actually cooler to die in Brooklyn at this point.

I certainly plan to spend the rest of my life here. Still NY's best-kept secret ... at least, for now ...

Somebody upthread said cities can be lonely places. I think small towns can, too, if you don't fit in. That's one of the things that makes this community so great.

GravatarI think they're going to be therapists.

Jeebus, that is downright dangerous to humanity!

Gravataroh, that's right. They were going to be therapists.

Maybe they can get jobs at the Rotenberg Center and spend the rest of their lives providing electric shocks to autistic kids.

After they bugger them.

"Unclear?" Really?

I could make an uneducated guess . . .

GravatarThere seems to be a future in torture these days.

GravatarHave a nice day.

I need to go to the most beautiful place in the world - the farmers' market.

GravatarShe's not my first choice, but she is probably the most capable declared candidate we have for president.

But why oh why does Sen. Clinton cry, "A new attack will help the GOP?"

Doesn't she realize that Osama votes Republican?

Has she forgotten the videotape released by Osama shortly before 2004's election, how it was deemed helpful (and in my opinion, might have been the edge) to Bush?

Isn't it obvious that Bush and Osama need each other, each feeding the other's ambitions and goals? Why in hell did we outsource the last squeeze of the vise in Tora Bora to Musharraf?

Because friends don't let friends get captured or killed in Afghanistan, that's why.

GravatarWhat'll it be, Ralphie?

Well, I'm about to shower, put on clean underwear, and go to my Saturday morning Martini Club. People wonder why I nap a lot on Saturday afternoons.

Gravatarand go to my Saturday morning Martini Club

I was contemplating that myself, since I have to go to the baseball game with a whole shitload of the wife's place of employ.

Nothing like hanging out with a bunch of republicans, to ruin a perfectly good baseball game.

GravatarThat sounds so rude, el.

GravatarTurkee for Darcy wending its way through the internets... and for Act Blue.

GravatarWould a fully retired Air Force veteran like Burner's father be at risk for a medical bills financial disaster?

The way this government takes care of its veterans, absolutely!
