The thing is, the necessary steps in zoning are done at the local level, subject to a local process which is heavily dominated by those who have a direct financial interest in zoning, that is, developers and real estate types, who see only their own profit, not the wider implications of the policies they advocate.

The lede from the NYT sports section on the all star game:

One outraged response was: "This isn't New York City!"
I, however, am more concerned about how the town thinks all of these people will be getting to work on this already overcrowded road without any type of public transportation available.

Part of the problem with creating walkable/transit-oriented communities is that for decades suburban parents have been overtly and covertly hammered with the message that letting their little darlings experience the world unsupervised in any way is not only dangerous, it makes them the Worst Parents In the World.
So you end up with suburbs where everyone goes everywhere via giant SUV, and kids are chauffered and chaperoned by mommy and/or daddy until they're old enough to drive.
And any change to that set-up -- esp. a change that allows freer movement -- is viewed as Extremely Dangerous.

Those who put forward the idea that those concerned about climate change think the Earth's climate was static before the industrial revolution are simply shitheads; they refuse to accept that human activity does change the environment. I mean, ask the European lions about the impact of humans on the environment. Or check in with the cedars of Lebanon. Or ask the DoDo.
The fact is, without humans, climate would change. But not change as much, and not in such a way as to put the survival of the human race in question.

If we're wrong and climate change is not linked to human activity (although, of course, all the evidence overwhelmingly points to the fact that it is) the worst case scenario is that we end our dependence on foreign oil, we clean up the air, we develop new, exciting technologies that create jobs, and we preserve more of our natural resources and spaces.

don't know that I ever understood why this is a right-left disagreement other than the cons like to be subservient to someone and the corps are just all right with them
It's easier to fuck over the environment to make money (e.g., GE and the upper Hudson River).

Here in Seattle, we're getting our very first light rail line, but appropriate development around the stations has been stymied by NIMBYism of the first degree. Otherwise rational people have been scared off by the "urban hellhole" dystopia/fantasy and have organized to oppose multi-family housing even in entirely appropriate areas.

Can I just say that most normal people are happy that Obama is not really that in to baseball and prefers playing an actual, you know, sport? Nothing against baseball, but it's fucking boring as hell. Sorry.

In Michigan there is a small river with a great name: The Titabawasee. Unfortunately this river has the misfortune to meander through the town of Midland and the plants belonging to Dow Chemical.
Before the river gets to Midland - lots of fish and normal activity. After Midland the river is essentially dead.
Dow has "proven" time and again they have nothing to do with this: it's natural or some bullshit.
Next year's elections are going to produce a political earthquake. That is because we currently suffer the most left-wing government in our nation's history
.
.
Unfortunately, America is headed for some bad crashes under the current flower child policies of left-wing extremism, on foreign policy and national defense concerns as well as domestic and economic policy. Next year's campaigns will involve a crusade to restore policies to rebuild traditional American freedom and prosperity. Where will you be during that crusade?
all wingnut rhetoric these days seems to be built around the fore-imagined glorious revenege surely waiting for them in the near future. this is constructed around three dubious assumptions:
1. there will be some horrible disaster, economic or otherwise, by next summer
2. if there is a disaster, everybody will blame it on obama's 'socialist' policies
3. if 1 & 2 are true, then inevitably the republican party will benefit
Lord, that is some industrial strength racist stupidity there.

FWIW, the comments in the Detroit Free Press comment sections are of the same ilk. These poor bastards must sit around all day and spread hate in any outlet.
(I have argued with them a couple of times. Actually less satisfying that arguing with the trolls here - and that activity is about like having your asshole bleached.)

the elephant in the room nobody wants to talk about when it comes to mass transit and walkable communities is race. america's suburban catastrophe is essentially the price paid for not thinking the whole concept of integration through before implementing. this is a price that is being paid over and over every day.
but if you don't account for race, then you simply will be unable to understand how the world works. you will sit around coming up with bizarre explanations for why people make the choices they do.
why do people put up with living so far from the downtowns in which they work? why do communities vote against mass transit in their backyard? why do they underfund schools? why would anyone want to pay a premium live in a gated community? why is shopping located in exurban boxes rather than in small local stores?
none of it makes sense if you are unwilling to think about race.

And just MAYBE experience slightly lower profits. There, finished now.

why do people put up with living so far from the downtowns in which they work?
To raise children, and to have backyards where these same children can play. In the city land is pricey and a whole bunch of money will only get you a postage sized bit o' grass.

I sure would consider taking the bus to work if there was one. It's not like I live in Bumfark Egypt or anything. I'm only 1/3 mile from the intersection of two major state highways, one of which being NY Route 5, where you might expect there to be a bus route if you spent any time in Europe, but no, this is the USA, where everybody drives everywhere.
