The lede from the NYT sports section on the all star game:

ST. LOUIS — The National League must feel like the frustrated brother who cannot beat his brother when it plays the American League in the All-Star Game. The N.L. knows it is talented enough to win and knows it can win. But the A.L., the imposing brother, does not let it happen.

GravatarPart of the problem with creating walkable/transit-oriented communities is that for decades suburban parents have been overtly and covertly hammered with the message that letting their little darlings experience the world unsupervised in any way is not only dangerous, it makes them the Worst Parents In the World.

So you end up with suburbs where everyone goes everywhere via giant SUV, and kids are chauffered and chaperoned by mommy and/or daddy until they're old enough to drive.

And any change to that set-up -- esp. a change that allows freer movement -- is viewed as Extremely Dangerous.

I mean, ask the European lions about the impact of humans on the environment. Or check in with the cedars of Lebanon. Or ask the DoDo.

The fact is, without humans, climate would change. But not change as much, and not in such a way as to put the survival of the human race in question.

Gravatar"Toxic Sludge is Good For You!" and "Trust Us, We're Experts" by John Stauber and Sheldon Rampton are excellent books on the subject. And they have Tom Tomorrow cartoons on the covers.

GravatarHere's the thing:

If we're wrong and climate change is not linked to human activity (although, of course, all the evidence overwhelmingly points to the fact that it is) the worst case scenario is that we end our dependence on foreign oil, we clean up the air, we develop new, exciting technologies that create jobs, and we preserve more of our natural resources and spaces.

If the deniers are wrong, we face floods, disease, pestilence, and wars over land and water.

3. The utterly selfish, who don't give a shit unless something bad happens to them right now.

5. The professional deniers -- oil companies, nuclear power companies, polluting companies, resource hog companies, and all their shills and minions.

GravatarHere in Seattle, we're getting our very first light rail line, but appropriate development around the stations has been stymied by NIMBYism of the first degree. Otherwise rational people have been scared off by the "urban hellhole" dystopia/fantasy and have organized to oppose multi-family housing even in entirely appropriate areas.

GravatarTOBFAIR(tm)

GE paid shitloads of $$$$ to dredge the Hudson

Gravataryes only losers who post on the internet all day have lived in multifamily hosing.

*whistles*

GravatarAfternoon, all

Euphronius, you still studying?

GravatarTapper is an asshole. I'd never seen that Lewinsky thing. Christ, I hope the woman hangs out with a better class of male these days.

What a loser. (Tapper, not Monica.)

GravatarMy boss asked us to send her our "updated" resumes by July 29. She has a meeting with the hospital on the 31st.

I honestly think she's going to bat for us. Trying to be proactive; getting out there ahead of the merger date.

I'm grateful.

GravatarGE paid shitloads of $$$$ to dredge the Hudson

And they are not yet done.

Gravatari alerady studied for 3 hours today. will do 2-3 more tonight.

GravatarLubyanka certainly lacks people skills, I'll give him that.

GravatarDidn't the Harvard MBA program drop a class in business ethics due to lack of interest amongst the students?

GravatarCan I just say that most normal people are happy that Obama is not really that in to baseball and prefers playing an actual, you know, sport? Nothing against baseball, but it's fucking boring as hell. Sorry.

GravatarAl!

GravatarLubyanka certainly lacks people skills, I'll give him that.

And a faithful Mrs.
And a good-paying job.
And testicles.

GravatarReally? The dredging only began in May and is supposed to go til 2015.

GravatarLubyanka certainly lacks people skills, I'll give him that.

But he makes up for that by being stupid and obnoxious at full volume.

euphronius failure

Well, congratulations to the New York Attorneys.

In Michigan there is a small river with a great name: The Titabawasee. Unfortunately this river has the misfortune to meander through the town of Midland and the plants belonging to Dow Chemical.

Before the river gets to Midland - lots of fish and normal activity. After Midland the river is essentially dead.

Dow has "proven" time and again they have nothing to do with this: it's natural or some bullshit.

Just a coincidence I guess.

heh

GravatarCheck out the number-one rated "comment" on this story.

The SF Kronk, kids - the "liberal" paper in the most "liberal" part of the country. A paper, obviously, "liberals" aren't reading. And they wonder why they're going out of business...

Gravatar"eek" isn't the manliest expression I've ever seen...

What d'ya mean Dean? It's the battle cry of every republican cause. Eek, the gays! Eek the Muslims! Eek, liberals!

What's not manly about that?

Gravatar2010 Will Be a Political Earthquake - Peter Ferrara, American Spectator

Next year's elections are going to produce a political earthquake. That is because we currently suffer the most left-wing government in our nation's history
.
.
Unfortunately, America is headed for some bad crashes under the current flower child policies of left-wing extremism, on foreign policy and national defense concerns as well as domestic and economic policy. Next year's campaigns will involve a crusade to restore policies to rebuild traditional American freedom and prosperity. Where will you be during that crusade?

all wingnut rhetoric these days seems to be built around the fore-imagined glorious revenege surely waiting for them in the near future. this is constructed around three dubious assumptions:

1. there will be some horrible disaster, economic or otherwise, by next summer

2. if there is a disaster, everybody will blame it on obama's 'socialist' policies

3. if 1 & 2 are true, then inevitably the republican party will benefit

i'm not a betting man, m'self

.

Gravatardave™©,

Can you IMAGINE how unhappy this person must be?

Lord, that is some industrial strength racist stupidity there.

GravatarDWD i know absolutely nothing about that The Dow Chemical Company matter. nope.

res ipsa loquitur

I rented a hotel room near the testing center for the last week of torture, which included the 3 day bar exam (it was waaaay on the other side of the Houston area). And I did the handwritten exam, for sure.

GravatarHanging out at newspaper comment sections is hazardous to one's mental health.

Gravatardave™©,

FWIW, the comments in the Detroit Free Press comment sections are of the same ilk. These poor bastards must sit around all day and spread hate in any outlet.

(I have argued with them a couple of times. Actually less satisfying that arguing with the trolls here - and that activity is about like having your asshole bleached.)

Gravatarthe elephant in the room nobody wants to talk about when it comes to mass transit and walkable communities is race. america's suburban catastrophe is essentially the price paid for not thinking the whole concept of integration through before implementing. this is a price that is being paid over and over every day.

but if you don't account for race, then you simply will be unable to understand how the world works. you will sit around coming up with bizarre explanations for why people make the choices they do.

why do people put up with living so far from the downtowns in which they work? why do communities vote against mass transit in their backyard? why do they underfund schools? why would anyone want to pay a premium live in a gated community? why is shopping located in exurban boxes rather than in small local stores?

none of it makes sense if you are unwilling to think about race.

Gravatar"eek" isn't the manliest expression I've ever seen...

i have always had a very strong impression of lubyanka as a feminine person

Gravatarthe UK is officially promoting Tony Bliar as a candidate for EU president. and I was hoping he was on his way to the Hague!

GravatarIf we're wrong and climate change is not linked to human activity (although, of course, all the evidence overwhelmingly points to the fact that it is) the worst case scenario is that we end our dependence on foreign oil, we clean up the air, we develop new, exciting technologies that create jobs, and we preserve more of our natural resources and spaces.

And just MAYBE experience slightly lower profits. There, finished now.
.

Gravatarfuckity fuck fuck!

now I will have to spend my vacation getting people to sign a petition against him rather than having fun in the sun.

Gravatarsheets

Gravatarwhy do people put up with living so far from the downtowns in which they work?

To raise children, and to have backyards where these same children can play. In the city land is pricey and a whole bunch of money will only get you a postage sized bit o' grass.

race???

GravatarI sure would consider taking the bus to work if there was one. It's not like I live in Bumfark Egypt or anything. I'm only 1/3 mile from the intersection of two major state highways, one of which being NY Route 5, where you might expect there to be a bus route if you spent any time in Europe, but no, this is the USA, where everybody drives everywhere.
