The multi billion launch complex for the shuttle at Vandenberg was built and never used. Vandenberg is needed for polar orbiting satellites (launch due south over the ocean) that scan the Earth. Communication satellites that need to go into synchronous orbits can most efficeiently be launched from as near the equator as possible going east.
You can't launch south from Cape Canaveral and at 23 N latitude you loose a lot of 'umph' by forcing an equatorial orbit from there.

The multi billion launch complex for the shuttle at Vandenberg was built and never used. Vandenberg is needed for polar orbiting satellites (launch due south over the ocean) that scan the Earth. Communication satellites that need to go into synchronous orbits can most efficeiently be launched from as near the equator as possible going east.
You can't launch south from Cape Canaveral and at 23 N latitude you loose a lot of 'umph' by forcing an equatorial orbit from there.

i had (have) what i presume must have been mild dyslexia. learning to write in cursive was absolutely impossible for me. amazingly, the teachers were the ones who made it hell for me. they were petty and doctrinaire and already didn't like me because i questioned authority.
