There is no good news.
It does seem kinda bleak on the macro level, but on a personal level things are looking up for me. I finished a script Thursday so I woke up Friday unemployed. By lunchtime, I had a new script assignment and they were drawing up the contract. By dinnertime, I had a second script assignment. It looks now that the Toons Family should be able to make it to the end of the year -- and after the first of the year, the toonbiz usually picks up again. I have survived the slow part of the season.

Every night I dream of being in the mob that comes upon these evil men in their last hour, when they stand in their silk nightshirt, holding aloft a candle and sputtering with the last of their umbrage "What is the meaning of this?"
That I cannot be dissuaded with tales of heavenly reward should put some more fear into them. I've little heart to be highminded or magnanimous in victory these days. It is a dark humor to feel some protection in the notion that they will not dispose of me ahead of time for fear that they might then be forced to labor on their own behalf.

There are those who have blogs. Then there are those who leave comments on other people’s blogs, sometimes lots and lots of comments, sometimes nasty, clever, brilliant, monumentally stupid or filthy comments.
DaShiv posts mostly to MetaFilter, a Web site that allows anyone to submit items of interest or questions inviting comment by other people. Another user there, Chad Okere, a 27-year-old computer programmer in Ames, Iowa, who uses the screen name Delmoi, has posted more than 13,000 comments. On the conservative politics blog Little Green Footballs, nearly 4.3 million comments have been left by tens of thousands of users since its creation in 2001.

Personal foul: Roughing the trollbait. Half the distance to the goal.
Like the narrator of the Elton John song “Rocket Man,” frequent commenters can spend a little time every day inhabiting the identity of their wished-for selves — Mr. Hsiao becomes DaShiv, or Georgia Logothetis, a second-year lawyer in Chicago, metamorphoses into the respected liberal commenter georgia10 on Daily Kos. Online they indulge the sweet fantasy that “I’m not the man they think I am at home.”
“You are one of the millions of people who sit at a computer all day,” said Marshall Poe, a professor of history and new media at the University of Iowa, who has studied Internet communities. “Every hour you have 10 minutes where you’re not doing anything productive at work, and you can’t look at porn. So you make a comment and fulfill this desire to show yourself off as a smarty-pants.”
Ooo, blog jargon is fresh!

Pure comedy:
Commenting has become such a widely played sport that new tools are being deployed to separate the “trolls” — unwelcome commenters — from the favorites. Eater plans to offer readers the option of custom-filtering comments to exclude certain writers. Little Green Footballs started a rating system that lets users vote a comment up or down on a page, “to help the better ones be noticed,” the site creator, Charles Johnson, wrote in an e-mail message.

ONE of the founding fathers of neoconservatism has privately urged President George W Bush to bomb Iran rather than allow it to acquire nuclear weapons.
Norman Podhoretz, an intellectual guru of the neoconservative movement who has joined Rudolph Giuliani’s 2008 presidential campaign as a senior foreign policy adviser, held an unpublicised meeting with Bush late last spring at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York.
The encounter reveals the enduring influence of the neoconservatives at the highest reaches of the White House, despite some high-profile casualties in the past year.
Karl Rove, who was still serving in the White House as Bush’s deputy chief of staff, took notes. But the meeting, which lasted 45 minutes, was not logged on the president’s schedule.
“I urged Bush to take action against the Iranian nuclear facilities and explained why I thought there was no alternative,” said Podhoretz, 77, in an interview with The Sunday Times.
“I laid out the worst-case scenario – bombing Iran – versus the worst-case consequences of allowing the Iranians to get the bomb.”
He also told Bush: “You have the awesome responsibility to prevent another holocaust. You’re the only one with the guts to do it.” The president looked very solemn, Podhoretz said.
For the most part Bush simply listened, although he and Rove both laughed when Podhoretz mentioned giving “futility its chance”, a phrase used by his fellow neoconservative, Robert Kagan, about the usefulness of pursuing United Nations sanctions against Iran.

"THE CLOCK IS TICKING!
24 HOURS REMAINING BEFORE CRUCIAL FEC FUNDRAISING DEADLINE!
We are in perilous times … The stunning admission by Democratic frontrunners Clinton, Obama and Edwards that they might keep US troops in Iraq beyond 2013 is tantamount to announcement of a permanent occupation that could cost us $5 trillion and bankrupt any opportunity to address healthcare reform, education, jobs or any other domestic policy initiatives.[...]
[...]We are so close! I need your help to raise the final 150,000 dollars for this campaign quarter before the critical FEC filing deadline at midnight on SUNDAY, SEPT. 30th.
Only 24 hours remain to get this done. Now is the time to share with your friends, neighbors and co-workers our message and ask for their help, too.
I know you want this war to end. I know you don't want war with Iran. Help me be the voice of reason for our country. The clock is ticking on our future. The time is NOW for a leader to emerge who represents the interests of the People … I am that leader and I will lead this nation so that your future and all our futures will not run out of time.
Thank you again for your continued support. Please take action today at this critical juncture in our history.
It's your America!
I'll make sure your voice is heard!

US backed 'democracy' at work:
"Pakistani police have used batons and tear gas on lawyers protesting against Pervez Musharraf's candidacy in next week's presidential poll as elections officials approved of his nomination.[...]
Police fired tear gas shells and beat the protesters, with at least one officer using a tree branch.[...]
"The brutality of General Musharraf is being seen worldwide. Only the blind governments of the United States and Britain cannot see it," Ahsan said.
Likely victory
Tayyab Siddiquie, a political analyst, told Al Jazeera that Musharraf could be confident of victory in the forthcoming poll.
"The president is on strong ground as he has eight years of achievements to talk about."
On Friday, Pakistan's supreme court dismissed opposition challenges to Musharraf's right to contest the controversial election while he remains head of the military.
Musharraf filed his nomination papers for the elections on Thursday and is likely to win, given that the election involves the national and provincial parliaments, in which his allies hold a majority."

Medics treat an Iraqi boy who had his leg amputated after the attack [EAP] A military spokesman has confirmed a US air strike on the Dora district of southern Baghdad on Friday, saying it had targeted men firing mortars into a neighbouring area.

"Jeremy Scahill Goes Inside Blackwater, the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army
Submitted by BuzzFlash on Tue, 03/20/2007 - 8:54pm. Interviews
A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW
Someone who is deeply linked to the Christian right, and to the current Administration, has turned around and started what has become the world's most powerful private mercenary army. These guys are like neo-Crusaders. To have them on the government payroll to the tune of $750 million, operating in a Muslim country, should be frightening to everyone who understands that."

JR, I am ready. Truly. I like the idea of having another Constitutional Convention. We really and truly could revamp our Constitution a bit: Keep the good stuff but get rid of some of the stupid stuff. (Like the power of small states over large states. The constant drain of federal money from states like Michigan and redistributing it to warmer climates where the government workers like it better I guess, and so on.) There are are a lot of things that could be improved. Personally, I would like to be able to recall the president. . . .

Wholesome tween idols are in dangerously short supply, according to Jackie McKone. So the Arnold mom was perfectly glad to rise at 5 a.m. yesterday to snag tickets to a Disney Channel "Hannah Montana" concert for her daughter Molly -- and then spend five hours at the mall waiting to see the 11-year-old's newest pop-culture heroine, Jenna Bush.
"We wanted to meet a real role model," said Molly's friend Samantha Newman, 10.
I notice Jenna being described as a "teacher". When has she ever taught?

“If Hitler’s warnings were heeded when he wrote ‘Mein Kampf,’ he could have been stopped,” said Bradley Blakeman, 49, the president of Freedom’s Watch and a former deputy assistant to Mr. Bush. “Ahmadinejad is giving all the same kind of warning signs to us, and the region — he wants the destruction of the United States and the destruction of Israel.”
My little towns police force has a couple of armored vehicles. One even has a battering ram. It's crazy.

Letter to the Editor:
"Re “Hired Gun Fetish,” by Paul Krugman (column, Sept. 2:
I am writing to express my grave concern with the use of private security contractors in Iraq. This Bush administration move to privatize the military is a grievous and immoral mistake. It has serious implications for the future of both foreign and domestic policy.
If the United States is pursuing legitimate national security goals in a foreign country, in actions in which people risk death and are being authorized to kill for the sake of our nation, our military must take responsibility for and be in complete charge of all the forces involved. The president must be the commander in chief, not the contractor in chief.
And Congress must step up to openly authorize payment and include the expenses in the budget, not defer the financial burden to the next generation through weak-willed acquiescence to an executive out of control.
Congress is abdicating its constitutional and moral authority in this matter. If the employees of organizations like Blackwater USA want to serve their country, let them sign on with the armed forces. John Varner"

Jenna Bush, Author, Finds Eager Audience at Signing
By Amy Argetsinger
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, September 30, 2007; Page C01
Wholesome tween idols are in dangerously short supply, according to Jackie McKone. So the Arnold mom was perfectly glad to rise at 5 a.m. yesterday to snag tickets to a Disney Channel "Hannah Montana" concert for her daughter Molly -- and then spend five hours at the mall waiting to see the 11-year-old's newest pop-culture heroine, Jenna Bush.
Not to bitch and all: But I spent fifteen years teaching myself my craft, went through a bunch of rejections, thousands of dollars of copying costs - mailing costs, and an unbelievable amount of frustration before I actually found a small publisher to take me on.
And Jenna Bush is going to be a best-selling author.
heh. This Meachem versus Hitchens debate on CNBC is allowing Hitchens to trash religion.
Hitchens: So far you haven't said anything that wasn't a quotation from someone else. Do you actually know what you believe?
Bwah ha ha ha.

Hi everybody.
I notice Jenna being described as a "teacher". When has she ever taught?
As best I can tell, she taught in a DC charter school in the 2005-06 school year. She didn't start teaching until after the election, then by November 2006 was hanging out in Paraguay or Agrentina or something with her boy toy. No school has that much time off, so she must have left by then.
After that, who knows. It seems she's been busy writing her book and getting engaged to some guy named Henry.

It's called "City on the Edge of Forever," Jimmy-boy - NOT "Yesterday is Tomorrow."
However, as late as 1946 or 1947, when Robert Byrd was 29 years old, he was still at least somewhat involved in promoting the KKK, as evidenced by a letter that he wrote to a Grand Wizard stating "The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia" and "in every state in the nation."

Auto speakers from one of the Suzukis, which had upgraded ones installed, 5 lb coffee cans, speckle paint, and clear coat on the outside, brackets to bolt them to the porch roof beams, and filled with of all things feathers (hey this is ghetto grade engineering). I used them because of their high fractal coefficient. I also tried pink fiber glass insulation, but this is better.
They sound pretty nice, and play loud enough to be concerned at the hour you use them in spite of the large lots the houses here are on, 1 acre min, and some are 5 or more.

Now as much as I love the Society of Friends and the Unitarians and such I am really talking about the Lutherans or the Baptists or the Episcopalians or the Prebsbyterians or the Catholics or even my former church, the RCA (Reformed Church in America)Hell, I would be satisfied if our brothers and sisters the CRC -Christian Reformed Church- would do this. But they won't.
Why not? Does it not say in the Bible that every Christian must, by virtue of their beliefs, be a person of peace? We are fighting an illegal war and killing people wantonly: where is the outrage of the followers of Christ?
Or could it be that they are simply pretenders to the faith and use their faith as a bludgeon the attack those who are different than they are? Do they believe they should oppose war or be like Hitler when he asked Pope Pius XII to bless the armies of the Third Reich? (And he did it!)

However, as late as 1946 or 1947, when Robert Byrd was 29 years old, he was still at least somewhat involved in promoting the KKK,
When I was 29, I liked the band "Cult"

Darryl,
Oh, I know and I was not actually expecting an answer. I am just putting the cosmology of this fucked up world together once and for all and trying to work all of the pieces into their correct positions. I think I nearly have it: the DWD Grand Unified Theory of Why Things Are Really This Fucked Up.
(not that it will make any difference whatsoever.)

Oh man - watching the 4th season finale of Curb Your Enthusiasm, in which Larry is about to have sex with his costar when he finds out she's a Republican and has a picture of Bush in her dressing room. I don't think I could stand it if it were any funnier.

Now Amanpour's reporting on a Palestinian suicide bomber. As a boy he aspired to be an actor and artist. Instead he ended up in the Palestinian police where a young Palestinian girl died in his arms after an Israeli retaliation bombing. His radicalization began after that.
For whole families in the occupied territory becoming a martyr is the only antidote left to despair.

...oh, to go back in time and kick Dubya's ass after that "illegal but gratifying right hook" at the rugby game.
So, Myra Rudolph bailed on snl this season. For me, the one saving grace of the show has always been the willingness to put some really wiggy, brilliant, slightly odd looking women comedians out there.
They can all come over to my place. We'll put on some Cult.

If you have a turntable, I'd jump on this. Incredible fucking record that I just finished listening to in its entirety. Orchestra-backed singer-songwriter doesn't get much better ... tropical vibe, of course, not Scott Walker/Brecht trips (not that there's anything wrong that, on the fucking contary ...)
