sort of on topic: i read the other day that al-sadr said he's disband his militia if the US got serious about a timetable. now, that's not exactly new, but i found myself wondering if i really believed him. his people have tasted if not "glory," at least the power and knowledge that they can seriously hamstring the 'greatest military on earth' and drive them effectively back to the greenzone foxholes. why shouldn't they keep going and carve out a little empire somewhere once we leave? boilerplate: i hate violence and i'm not trying to seem like i'm endorsing slaughter for power on anyone's part. but i think that in all of history, there are very few victorious armies who just walk away from attaining their fullest goals after a string of victories.

i thought of you this morning. i completely abandoned my yard this year, so well-established perennials are flourishing and the rest is filled in with all kinds of tall weeds and wild flowers. each day when i see it, i feel like apologizing to my neighbors.
this morning, a neighbor walked by as i was loading recyclables for the dump and said that my yard put all the manicured yards to shame! he said it was a visual treat!
