GravatarMoonbats,

Tonight, slip into sleep unnoticed. Wander about for a long time in that kingdom before you are ever noticed. Slip like a swamp fox into the still waters surrounding sleep's cypress. Move like a shadow through the dark landscape of dreams. Whenever things threaten to notice the lack of light, divert their attention.

There's no moonlight at all tonight to give you away.

Slip in, get what you need, and slip back into the land of the wide awake before you've been noticed.

GravatarThe expression "exurb" (for "extra-urban") was coined in the 1950s, by Auguste Comte Spectorsky to describe the ring of prosperous rural communities beyond older than suburbs, that are commuter towns for an urban area.[1] Most exurbs serve as commuter towns, but most commuter towns are not exurban.

GravatarToday's exurbs are comprised of small neighborhoods in otherwise bucolic areas, towns, and (comparatively) small cities. Some lie in the outer suburbs of an urbanized area, but a few miles of rural, wooded, or agricultural land separates many exurbs from the suburbs.

More wiki.

GravatarDarryl, yeah, apparently you've got them out there as well.

GravatarA commuter town or exurb can also be known as a bedroom community (Canada and U.S usage), a dormitory town (UK Commonwealth and Ireland usage), or less commonly a dormitory village (UK Commonwealth and Ireland). These terms suggest that residents sleep in these neighborhoods, but mostly work elsewhere.

GravatarOften, however, commuter towns form when workers in a region cannot afford to live where they work and must seek residency in another town with a lower cost of living. The late 20th century Dot-com bubble and United States housing bubble drove housing affordability in Californian metropolitan areas to historic lows, spawning exurban growth in adjacent counties. For example, most cities in Riverside County, California can be considered exurbs of Los Angeles and San Diego. As of 2003, over 80% of workforce of Tracy, California was employed in San Francisco Bay Area.

Helsinki is a lot colder than the other coastal cities in Finland, because it lacks the sheltering islands so the ice wind comes straight over the water.

Gravatari'm in omaha tonight. they opened up that mall today already...

With "heightened security."

Locking the barn door after the horses bolted...

I'm not blaming them and the mall needs the shoppers, so I guess they have to reassure them. The whole thing was very sad. No less sad than what goes on in Iraq on a daily basis, however.

GravatarThe color is called "Lily White," but it's actually a sheer, sheer blue.

GravatarI'm so old (how old am I?), I can remember when rather nice houses of reasonable sq footage cost less than many new cars now. The idea that one would have to pay half a mil for a house that would accomodate a family of 4 or 5 is just simply beyond my ability to conceive.

All my life I've heard and read about inflation. It never, ever goes away, it just gets built upon, higher and higher and higher.

Within an excellent school district, near proximity to our major medical complex, shopping etc. Low crime comparative. Established neighborhood of professionals or mid-range or above skilled trades, middle class retirees. The house cost me 125K four years back.

GravatarTalked to my friend tonight who just moved to a gated community near Chapl Hill. They've very republican. They were unprepared for the drought, but to their credit, they actually are finding ways to conserve the water: turning the shower on and off, not watering outside (their landscaping is dead or dying), collecting whatever they can when it has rained.

They are very, very concerned, because they were told that the rainfall always increased in the fall.

He would go home and get his father's Cadillac, pick me up, and then drive to his house, where we would get the van. Then we used to take it to the beach, back it up to the water, open the doors, light a fire on the sand, and make out.

Good times.

GravatarI was going for the tasteful throw-up.

Wow. That brought back some memories!

Gravatar4Legs, I iz watchin Scifi giant squidz.

GravatarOh, I had a patchwork of about 10 different blues on my walls since the spring. They just got covered up today, as a matter of fact.

U painted?

GravatarMy staircase railing project is still in the state I left it about three years ago. Mostly stripped but not completely. I'm never going to finish it as it is the most hateful work I have done. But it looks like shit.

Heh. You make me feel better about the patio I started to dig out and never finished this summer

GravatarIs that because it doesn't increase in the fall? Obviously, it wasn't always this bad.

Some of the climatologists I read have been using the phrase "totally non-linear."

GravatarWE HAVE EATAGE!

Gravatar4Legs, I iz watchin Scifi giant squidz.

Izn't too bad, though there is a regrettable lack of eatage.

GravatarA related phenomenon is common in the resort towns of the American West, which require large workforces but place an emphasis on building "McMansions", and other expensive housing. For example, the resort town of Jackson, Wyoming has spawned several bedroom communities nearby, including Victor, Idaho; Driggs, Idaho; and Alpine, Wyoming, where the majority of the Jackson workforce reside. Many of the workforce who serve The Hamptons also reside in communities more modest and more suburban than their workplace, giving rise to a daily reverse commuter flow from more dense to less dense areas.

GravatarDamn, they lived.

I'm looking at the coats of paint covering the one we have now and imagining what it could look like.

But I loathe that kind of beautification project.

GravatarGood times.

I was such a stick-in-the-mud when I was young.

Gravatarres I stream Radio Paradise.

Radio in NYC is pathetic.

GravatarWE HAVE EATAGE!

Gravatarhi honeybear

GravatarNo takers on the 500K question?

GravatarDamn, they lived.

I agrees!!

Gravatar4LG,

I started today. This is the big room. It's gonna take a while. And I am gonna need help with two parts of it. I'm gonna hire this guy from the hardware store to do that part. I'll break my neck if I attempt it. But I'll do about 80% of it.

Glad we're not the only ones.

Add a few black lines and say it's Mondrian-inspired decor.

Oh we can just leave it as is and say it's Malevich inspired.

[you may recognize my Gravatar there, too]

Gravatar4Legs, we need more eatage and bleedage.

Gravatarhi fokowi.

Enjoy your visit with daughter.

GravatarHBK,

I just like to turn on 880 in the AM to get the weather and transit.

GravatarNo takers on the 500K question?

You could have mine for 550K?

GravatarI painted a big picture frame last night.

It originally had a big mirror in it (kind of formal looking). I wuz able to get teh mirror out without breaking it or chopping my footie off.

And now the frame is all black and iz gonna get filled with some freaky modern art.

GravatarI had a '57 Studebaker Silver Hawk in High School, the girls thought it was a Thunderbird. I was popular (and damned good looking).

Gravatarres, I can totally see you surrounded by that kind of color palette.

It fits you.

GravatarSkirts!

Gravatarlipreader, you live in LA?
fokowi

No, man. I was referring to Charles Daniels.

"I think I'm gonna reroute my trip,
I wonder if anybody'd think I'd flipped,
if I...went to LA, via Ohmaha?"

I apologize for the error.

GravatarSheets!

"Forecast" will be a quaint-term. The atmosphere is a heat engine. The more heat (fuel) in the engine... that faster it goes (positive feedback). More extreme weather events are expected ...often swinging from one to another very quickly.

Nice. I wish I owned my own place so I could paint and do stuff.

GravatarIt fits you.

Thanks, but not until recently. This place was totally traditional until I started ripping it apart about a year ago. For some reason I just wanted (a) less stuff and (b) something completely different.

Sister res was up here the other day and asked if I'd had a brain transplant.

It is gonna look cool, though (literally and figuratively).

You know, me too. I haven't changed palettes, but all of the sudden I want clean lines and modern stuff.

GravatarMore extreme weather events are expected ...often swinging from one to another very quickly.

I think we've seen examples of that already, but does that necessarily signal flooding in Atlanta and other parts of the South?

She said former lakes are so dry, their bottoms look like deserts.

GravatarIt is gonna look cool, though (literally and figuratively).

Best thing about it? It's yours, and you can do what you want.

Seriously, it does sound very cool and beautiful.

Color is an amazing thing.

GravatarRes, if I were in NYC, I'd help you. I'm really good at painting.

Gravatarposting here is just a hobby...

Gravataryeah, we all need to live in the urban rabbit-hutches so beloved of self-styled "progressives" like Dunkin Atrios-Donut.

No wonder Philly looks like some Soviet's idea of a city.

Gravatarfriday morning Kudlow did the "long economic boom!" pravdaism
