Sorry, but I live on the other side of that equation...where having to pay riculous amounts of malpractice insurance has driven up the cost of doing medicine to obscene levels, and the stress of idiotic litigation has driven some of the best people out of practicing medicine.
Addison |
can i bring you all together and say the problem is the concept that "insurance" and medicine go together?
take the insurance companies out of the equation, toss in some better and more effective regulation, and fund places so that health care providers aren't overworked and underpaid, and poof! lots of bad things stop happening.
we can do all of this for less than half the DoD budget, and have already spent several years worth of universal health care on the sands of iraq.

Been watching the talking heads on cable this morning, also caught McCain in NH on C-Span.
Some observations:
1)The MSM is circling the wagons around McCain. Pumkinhead, in particular, spoke glowingly of him. Nevermind, in the recent past, the meme was that the voters wanted change, they're rebeling against the estalishment. No one is more supportive of the war than McCain. Also, the meme is that he's a war hero. Nevermind, that's he not actually a war hero just got captured on a mission. Now, Kerrey in 04 that was a real war hero but the MSM never thought much of it then. Also, McCain in NH was asked if he'd support amnesty for the telecoms that illegally spied on US citizens for Bush. Now, the straightshooter, blamed it on the lack of bipartisanship in DC. Some people might call it a dodge; I'd just call it nonstraightshooting.
2) On Hillary, the talking heads continued their assault on her. She's hated, she has to win, she's the old politics but the voter want change, she's going negative. I feel really sorry for Hillary & I'm an Edwards supporter. What in the world has she ever done to deserve this?

HRC makes Bill O'Reilly look silly, and talks about Iraq.
Bill also got busted earlier asking someone else to ask Hillary a question at her townhall thing. admittedly, not the passion of the Obama scuffle, but it's just fun to watch Bill O' Having A Very Bad Morning.
Extreme cold weather is occurring worldwide. On Dec. 4, in Seoul, Korea, the temperature was a record minus 5 degrees Celsius. Nov. 24, in Meacham, Ore., the minimum temperature was 12 degrees Fahrenheit colder than the previous record low set in 1952. The Canadian government warns that this winter is likely to be the coldest in 15 years.
Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri are just emerging from a destructive ice storm that left at least 36 people dead and a million without electric power. People worldwide are being reminded of what used to be common sense: Cold temperatures are inimical to human welfare and warm weather is beneficial. Left in the dark and cold, Oklahomans rushed out to buy electric generators powered by gasoline, not solar cells. No one seemed particularly concerned about the welfare of polar bears, penguins or walruses. Fossil fuels don't seem so awful when you're in the cold and dark.
If you think any of the preceding facts can falsify global warming, you're hopelessly naive. Nothing creates cognitive dissonance in the mind of a true believer. In 2005, a Canadian Greenpeace representative explained “global warming can mean colder, it can mean drier, it can mean wetter.” In other words, all weather variations are evidence for global warming. I can't make this stuff up

I also only recently found out that Leonard Nimoy is an accomplished photographer. I'm not keeping up.
Incidentally, IMO LH would have made a fine Aragorn in LotR; without refreshing my memory by looking it up, the long-lived Dúnedain were sixtyish or so during the War of the Rings. I can easily imagine Lance, his face half-hooded, watching the hobbits in Bree.

Hillary's circumstance reflects a power imbalance between progressives & conservatives in the country. The RW went after the Clintons & the MSM simply picked it up. I thought they'd drop it after 7 years of W, particularly after the strongly favorable press he got, but I was wrong. If we went after the MSM the way the RW does, they'd think twice about pulling this stuff. Till we do, it'll be a succession of democratic candidates that get this treatment, albeit not as strongly since the RW's power has apexed.

Early corporations of the commercial sort were formed under frameworks set up by governments of states to undertake tasks which appeared too risky or too expensive for individuals or governments to embark upon. The alleged oldest commercial corporation in the world, the Stora Kopparberg mining community in Falun, Sweden, obtained a charter from King Magnus Eriksson in 1347. Many European nations chartered corporations to lead colonial ventures, such as the Dutch East India Company, and these corporations came to play a large part in the history of corporate colonialism.
In the United States, government chartering began to fall out of vogue in the mid-1800s. Corporate law at the time was focused on protection of the public interest, and not on the interests of corporate shareholders. Corporate charters were closely regulated by the states. Forming a corporation usually required an act of legislature. Investors generally had to be given an equal say in corporate governance, and corporations were required to comply with the purposes expressed in their charters. Many private firms in the 19th century avoided the corporate model for these reasons (Andrew Carnegie formed his steel operation as a limited partnership, and John D. Rockefeller set up Standard Oil as a trust). Eventually, state governments began to realize the greater corporate registration revenues available by providing more permissive corporate laws. New Jersey was the first state to adopt an "enabling" corporate law, with the goal of attracting more business to the state. Delaware followed, and soon became known as the most corporation-friendly state in the country after New Jersey raised taxes on the corporations, driving them out. New Jersey reduced these taxes after this mistake was realized, but by then it was too late; even today, most major public corporations are set up under Delaware law.

McCain was offered release by his captors in Hanoi and refused. This is a direct
violation of military policy that all prisoners seek escape and repatriation. Heroic
is not the term for this act. Any veteran of war that supports war is demented.
Defending the world from domination by fighting to free others under duress is not
only honorable but beyond question necessary. Supporting a war of aggression
fought to enrich the supporters of an administration elected through subterfuge and
denying the rights of voters is in itself a criminal act. Any thought of continuing the
occupation of Iraq beyond safe retreat of our troops is hubris. As i wrote and posted two years ago we need to leave Iraq and let them fight it out and buy the oil from the winners. Does anyone believe buying oil from Saddam would have been that bad? Idiots.

Libs/Progressives/even Dems have precious few resources which can pay MCmers $Ms per year for driving home our messages. Even the young libs/progs, as Somerby points out, see their career trajectory headed toward the Big MCM*. Where else? Academia? Small journals? Think tanks?
Libs don't even have a goodly number of think tanks for lefties to recuperate in between Dem administrations.
We need more and better Dems, and more and better media companies. Which is why I'm disappointed Soros decided to write off the US and take his money to mostly international endeavors for change. If only he'd picked up some flagging cable/media group, like Knight-Ridder when it was for sale. But, was not to be. And Turner seems totally out of that game.

Here's what I'd like to see happen. The big progressive bloggers have a meeting & decide they're going to coordinate whom they go after. They pick the institutions/personalities that are most vulnerable to progressive pressures. Then, in coordinated fashion, they post their latest egregious statement & whom to contact, including their advertisers. They urge each viewer to write/email them. A few years of doing this, particularly if advertising suffers will cause a shift. The goal should be to get over a 100,000 people to follow suit & email/write after each incident. I'd hope the smaller blogs to follow suit.

Incidentally, IMO LH would have made a fine Aragorn in LotR; without refreshing my memory by looking it up, the long-lived Dúnedain were sixtyish or so during the War of the Rings. I can easily imagine Lance, his face half-hooded, watching the hobbits in Bree...

The Dunedain were long-lived, during LOTR Aragorn was 87, though looked much younger (though not as young as Stuart Townsend, orginally cast as Aragorn).
Henricksen would have been a very interesting Aragorn.

Obama condones that behavior if he appears on that show.

Due to the nose-dive of the dollar, imported wine bargains will be tough to find. Try an Oregon pinot noir.

"When Clinton hit the stage, her well-positioned supporters rose up en masse and waved her signs carrying her new one word slogan: “Ready.” It was an impressive crowd and full of energy. By standard operational measurement, it all worked really well. The crowd was bunched right before the TV riser and the “Ready” placards waved happily before the cameras and Clinton beamed at what must have felt like a warm and nerve-soothing homecoming of sorts.
But the first indication of trouble came when she warned that Democrats must not be beguiled by “false hopes” (an obvious shot at Obama) and a ripple of boos arose from the Obama tables.
Clinton’s stump speech was warmly received — of that there can be no doubt — and she certainly appeared to have charmed if not won the room (after all, it was supposed to be hers).
Then Bill Richardson spoke and the Obama movement swung into action.
As Richardson boomed about ending the war in Iraq, team Obama pre-positioned men, women and young adults with Obama signs smack-dab in front of the stage. Hundreds upon hundreds marched silently and cheerfully (some were literally dancing barely suppressed jigs) from their distant tables and into the center of the “football” field, clogging all available space and encircling the tables of the amazed and slightly disconcerted Clinton supporters.
As soon as Richardson finished and Obama was waiting to be announced, Obama supporters hefted placards in bouncing waves and began chanting “Fired Up, Ready to Go” as the fire marshals frantically raced around to keep lanes open for people to walk around the TV riser. Rhythmic chants of “Obama” also arose in the arena as the round O-shaped Obama placards appeared to float by the hundreds in mid-air creating a mesmerizing sea of Obama signs that rocked and rolled before an empty stage.
So intense was the crowd up front, that an announcement was made that Obama wouldn’t be brought out until the crowd returned to their distant seats in Siberia. The Obama legions booed, made a token move away from the stage, but largely held their ground.
When Obama took the stage the response was thunderous and jubilant, three times as loud as that for Clinton. Obama said “Thank you” as a means to quiet the crowd, one woman yelled out “Thank YOU” and the crowd burst out in a roar and cheer."

We went to buy some Italian wine yesterday and both liquor stores were out. Is something going on with imports and can you recommend a robust, but cheap, American table wine.
What's going on with imports is that we have to buy Euros with confederate money. I don't know why they'd be out, however, unless they just got blown out over New Years (Tuesday holiday is the worst, logistically, for stocking and restocking).
I can't really recommend any cheap American wine, although I'm sure others will be glad to.
For value I suggest Argentine Malbec and Bonarda, and Spanish reds (there are some good inexpensive reds from Jumilla and many from other regions all over the country). And of course Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and reds from Salento and Apulia tend to be good, hearty, not too expensive Italian reds.

the drug consumer needs to know that medicine exists.
dirk gently, sociopathetic
Why?
That is my chief "Thing" on my agenda for the new year. I want to find a doctor or clinic or whatever who will address the CAUSE of my pain. I am sick to death of these fucking drugs. They are robbing my life from me. I don't want new drugs, I want to feel better without drugs.
Having the consumer go to the doctor and demand drugs is an asinine idea promulgated by the cynical for the exploitation of the gullible.

"This room was, until about five or six minutes ago, completely empty. This is a manufactured 'celebration.' It really felt more like a funeral as people started strolling in from upstairs where they had obviously been gathered. This is unlike anything that I've ever seen, a completely empty, dirge-like event."
-- NBC's Andrea Mitchell, on Sen. Hillary Clinton's speech after the Iowa caucuses.
Spending for prescription drugs accounted for 10.1% of national health expenditures in 2005 (compared to 4.7% in 1980). This spending increased 6% in 2005, down from an average annual growth of 12% from 2000 to 2004.

plantsman
no, they don't. they need good care from well informed physicians, who aren't trained to believe that "medicine" = "writing an rx."
everyone already knows "drugs exist." there is no need whatsoever for drug ads. none. they tell you nothing, and just confuse people with no medical background. it's the worse reversal of a law since letting lawyers put ads on teevee. /no offense to anyone here intended/

In 2002, the Harris Poll asked, "Do you believe the theory that increased carbon dioxide and other gases released into the atmosphere will, if unchecked, lead to global warming and an increase in average temperatures?"
74% responded "Yes."
When they asked the same question this year, that number had declined to 71%.

Of course, in our little section of North Arlington I'm usually addressing a pretty sympathetic audience, politically.
I'm really concerned for all the terrific importer/distributors in our area who've simply run out of tricks to ameliorate the dollar's decline. They and the producers they represent have been holding back for a long time, but they just can't do it anymore.

Awfully good stuff in Philly at the time of that meeting in March. I should register.

Seems the MCM has picked a winner--and it is not Hill or Edwards.
Now, what will happen next in their little game of Pick the President (to be played by Villagers only)?

Fro CA wines at the $10-15 price point, I'd recommend Rosenblum's Vintner's Cuvee Zin, Four Vines Chardonnay, Ravenswood Lodi Zin, Hess Select Cabernet, Joel Gott's "The Show" Cab/"Frontier Red" meritage, or maybe the Niebaum Coppola low-end zin. At the $30 price point, try one of the Ridge zins. They are yummy out of all proportion to their price.

some may love Obama and some may want Hillary, but the country NEEDS John Edwards.
We are heading into an economic recession that will rival the great depression. All of the protections that were in place to prevent it from ever happening again started to be dismantled under Reagan. They have been completely obliterated under Bush. There is no braking system. When the dominoes start to fall, (many believe they already have) there is nothing to slow or stop them.
We needed FDR to rebuild this country after Coolidge and Hoover, we need Edwards to rebuild after Bush. He is the only one that understands we have to break the choke hold that corporations have on our government.
Corporations have been behind everything from the war in Iraq to the mortgage crisis, the credit crisis, the health care crisis, and every other crisis our country faces today. It is time to take OUR government back from the corporations and give it back to the people.
John Edwards gets it.
