GravatarQuiet around this morning.

Everyone hung over?

GravatarThere goes the neighborhood!
.

GravatarSpeaking of neighborhoods...
.

GravatarGuess I'll go work the garden.

GravatarThanks for the reminder about FtC, ql.

And the ARC link, jac.

On topic: This is evidence of sovereignty, yanno. Surge worked! Victorious winningness! Less murderiffic than previously!

GravatarThat was a fast train thread!

Gravatar"Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki publicly rejected key U.S. terms for an ongoing military presence"

It's almost as if they don't appreciate what we've done for their country.

Gravatar
Everyone hung over?

Everyone's stuck in the DC Metro at Foggy Bottom.

GravatarHey, what's the big deal? Iraq is acting like a sovereign nation. Isn't that what we wanted?

GravatarEveryone hung over?
jac

No, but I'm planning to be tomorrow, so you kids keep it down in the AM, OK?

GravatarHow's Mom?
V for Virginia, discouraged

She's hanging in there, thanks. She's a strong woman. Three bouts with cancer in the last fifteen years will do that to you -- and she's won each time.

Gravatarel: That was a fast train thread!

Well... it was a very fast train!
.

GravatarSinf, you did a good thing for your mom this week. How did the kids hold up with all the driving and relatives?

GravatarEveryone's stuck in the DC Metro at Foggy Bottom.
Gromit

That would be some major suckage.

No, but I'm planning to be tomorrow, so you kids keep it down in the AM, OK?
V for Virginia

Heh.

GravatarHoly crap! (© Holden)

I just saw the Worst Huggy Bear Ad Ever in my Eschaton window.

Can you smell the desperation?

GravatarI vented a good deal of spleen on this comment, so I don't want it dead-threaded (although this looks like it may be one of those espresso mornings)

Srsly, I worked all afternoon and evening and declined to turn on the TV when I got home.

This morning's is the first coverage I've seen and I can't take much more.

I wish the good folks of Iowa all the best, but I hope that people all around the country will take a good look at how quickly its news media lost ALL interest in the fate of ordinary people and gave itself over to wailing, garment-rending, gnashing of teeth and general ululation over the death of one of its Beloved Villagers.

I just heard the empty head on the Today Show apologetically introduce a woefully brief report on the Iowa floods by saying: "Well, of course there IS other news in the world this morning..."

Who knew?

Wish me luck not saying anything really gross about Russert to someone at work. Bye.

GravatarAnd the eulogy for Russert continues...

GravatarSinf, you did a good thing for your mom this week. How did the kids hold up with all the driving and relatives?
Gromit

Kids did fine, actually. They had their moments, but they're kids, y'know? DVD players in the car are my savior, I'll tell ya that.

Me, on the other hand ... I still have a headache, and I slept almost all day yesterday. I doubt I'll be recovered fully until Monday. But I did what I needed to do. I'm just glad to be home, though.

Thanks, Gromit ...

GravatarThe surge hasn't fully kicked in yet. When it hits its peak efficiency, our problems will be over.

GravatarI just saw the Worst Huggy Bear Ad Ever in my Eschaton window.

Can you smell the desperation?
Sinfonian, back in Teh Glans™

Yeccccchhhhhh.

JP -- Rummy on a scooter? I can't see it.

Also, nice sunrise photo and it's cool about the free breaky

GravatarSteveLG, are you in the DC area?
Marcellina

I am! Are you coming to town?

GravatarThe natives are restless.

"Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, is planning to increase its output next month by about a half-million barrels a day, according to analysts and oil traders who have been briefed by Saudi officials.

The increase could bring Saudi output to a production level of 10 million barrels a day, which, if sustained, would be the kingdom’s highest ever. The move was seen as a sign that the Saudis are becoming increasingly nervous about both the political and economic effect of high oil prices. In recent weeks, soaring fuel costs have incited demonstrations and protests from Italy to Indonesia."

GravatarThe Russert thing is quickly devolving into absurdity.

MSNBC I kind of get, but all three cable news networks? Give me a fucking break.

GravatarHere's a surprise: David Broder wrote a eulogy for Tim Russert.

GravatarV for Virginia: JP -- Rummy on a scooter? I can't see it.

Probably a gift for a relative. I hear he can't sit down.
.

GravatarIt's flag day, too. Wow. Thank goodness I have the news to share the specialness in my world.

GravatarI just heard the empty head on the Today Show apologetically introduce a woefully brief report on the Iowa floods by saying: "Well, of course there IS other news in the world this morning..."

Also srlsly: I'm watching Cash in the Attic, real estate pr0n, and L&O reruns this weekend. I *know* what the cable news is going to be like, and I'm not watching it.

Have a good day, anyway, Steve.

GravatarHelp John McCain.

Please. It's important.

GravatarI saw a McCain ad that was all about Cyndi this morning. Clicked through to his site and it was all about her charity work. No mention of her stealing narcotics. Strange, that.

GravatarOkay, I'm-o pet the kittehs, and slumber like a cucumber.

Gravatarjac,

Did you read Bob Herbert's column in the Times this AM?

Damn!

GravatarWell, I've got to get ready for our Florida Democratic Party Jefferson-Jackson Day events today. I'll be liveblogging as appropriate, although I haven't decided yet whether I'll stick around for tonight's keynote address by Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell.

So, stay tuned, and catch you patriotz laterz.

GravatarI saw CNN (pre-Russert episode) do a thing on the 2 presidential wives. Apparently Cindy has charities and the contrast was that Michelle is just 'different.' Geez, can't they do any research...

GravatarAnd the eulogy for Russert continues...

I'm convinced it's a mechanism for insecure bobbleheads to convince themselves that they are important.

At my previous institution, our department chair died tragically and suddenly. We took ten minutes at the beginning of the next class to talk about it, and then went back to work.

It was certainly a major topic outside of class for quite a while, but we did not cancel classes or spend the rest of the semester talking about nothing but.

GravatarNo mention of her stealing narcotics. Strange, that.
Willendorf Venus

Huh! Must be some kind of oversight. I'm sure in the interest of full disclosure the McCain campaign will want to address that. It's very nearly as important as the fact that Michelle Obama may or may not have used the word "Whitey" in public several years ago. After all.

GravatarI just saw the Worst Huggy Bear Ad Ever in my Eschaton window.

Can you smell the desperation?

I smell Lieberliar for veep. (Hugs and kisses are his style)

GravatarDid you read Bob Herbert's column in the Times this AM?
DWD - S☮S

No, the Saudi story popped up in my Google Reader.

GravatarOK, time for my breakfast.

I have concluded that there really is something in the Washington water.

[Note: not about Russert or the FEMA flood response]

GravatarWho knew that comparing what a politician said ten years ago to what he said yesterday would someday be considered "great" journalism?

GravatarI smell Lieberliar for veep. (Hugs and kisses are his style)
el

I can't decide if I like this idea or not. I'm afraid it might look "bipartisan" to the uninitiated. OTOH Lieberman on the Dem ticket got me to vote for Nader, in the end. On the third hand (don't ask) I wouldn't be inclined to vote for McCain in the first place, so my reaction's probably not germane.

Gravatar
I smell Lieberliar for veep.

Fine by me. Though he will want to keep his senate seat and committee positions, and will whine piteously if the dems try to relegate him to the basement.

"Oh, those people in the democrat party are so mean and partisan!"

GravatarSenator Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, remarked on the disconnect between the harsh economic reality facing so many Americans and the Pollyanna claims of the Bush administration and others over the past several years.

The assertion that the economy was strong and getting stronger, repeated with the frequency of a mantra, hid the reality that working Americans have been taking a real beating, said Senator Sanders.

He pointed out that over the past seven or eight years, millions of Americans have lost health insurance coverage, lost pensions, and become deeply mired in debt. During that period, the median annual household income for working-age Americans fell by about $2,400.

“Americans work the longest hours of any people in the industrialized world,” the senator said. “We even surpassed Japan.”

But despite all that hard work — despite explosive improvements in technology and increased worker productivity — the middle class is struggling, losing ground and there’s a very real possibility that the next generation of workers will have a lower standard of living than today’s.

The letters to Senator Sanders offer a glimpse into the real lives of ordinary people in an economic environment that was sculpted to favor the very rich.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/1...tml? ref=opinion

(And no, the Times did not hire me to write his columns either)

BTW, on topic: I think it is GREAT news that the Iraqis are telling Bush to take his war and shove it. Someone has to. . . .

GravatarThere's an article in the NYT that makes me think that the GOP is not only stupid, it's crazy.

They're going to make the Supreme Court a campaign issue.

McCain railed against the 5-4 vote against Guantanamo.

I suppose there may be some disaffected women (and of course not just women) still angry about Hillary's loss who might consider voting for McCain.

If the GOP really makes this election in part about the Supremes, they can kiss goodbye the Hillary voters on the rebound, unless of course they never expected to get 'em anyway.

Gravatarok, I mined these 2 facts out of Atrios' link. Number 1 seems sensible, let the next (sane) POTUS deal with it. ...but then, there is the MONEY
___

1) Senior Iraqi officials: if there is no agreement, Iraq may ask the United Nations to extend its current mandate beyond the end of the year.

2) More than $30 billion in Iraqi Central Bank reserves are held in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The bank also houses the Development Fund for Iraq, through which all of Iraq's oil revenue is funneled. The fund was established in 2003 by the U.S. occupation authority and later taken over by the Iraqi government under the oversight of the United Nations, World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Its balance fluctuates and is currently about $20 billion.

Gravatar

This is exactly the kind of thing that Bernie is best at.

GravatarThey're going to make the Supreme Court a campaign issue.

Gotta remind those 1-issue (Roe v. Wade) issues what's at stake here.

GravatarSteveLG, I am flying into DC on July 1st.Friends in B'more have offered to pick me up, but suggested we stay to have dinner there( meaning airport) due to that it's right at peak rush hour. I don't want to make them do that if airport parking is pricey.
So, how can I get from Dulles to Union Station?
I may have asked this before but I've forgotten the answer.

GravatarBut the Surge worked. McBush said so. But those damn Iraqis refuse to even thank us. Why are they so ungrateful to begrudge us a mere 60 permanent military installations? It isn't like we would take over part of their country to maintain our oil supply & use it to torture people or anything. After all, look at Gitmo--we are permanant leaseholders in Cuba, & we have not drilled for oil there!

GravatarIf you are part of the Iowa national guard serving in Iraq do you get to come home for natural disasters?

GravatarI smell Lieberliar for veep.

Fine by me. Though he will want to keep his senate seat and committee positions, and will whine piteously if the dems try to relegate him to the basement.
Gromit

I realize Reid is in a tight spot, but there will come a time when the Senate's work comes to a halt before the election. I sincerely hope that the Dems strip him of his Committee assignments and kick him out of the caucus the, rather than after the election.

But he won't be VP. McCain will have to choose a "real conservative" to satisfy the base.

GravatarOf course, that was supposed to be 1-issue voters.

GravatarIf the GOP really makes this election in part about the Supremes, they can kiss goodbye the Hillary voters
David Derbes

Supremes/GITMO and tax-n-spend are all he has to rally the ignorant masses. A non-partisan research org credits Obama's plan for both saving taxpayers $, and saving the gov't $ over Huggy's plan.

GravatarIf you are part of the Iowa national guard serving in Iraq do you get to come home for natural disasters?
imbrite

why is there not crying icon?

GravatarGotta remind those 1-issue (Roe v. Wade) issues what's at stake here.
Willendorf Venus

Sure, but that works both ways.

McCain is on the margin. The edge voters know where he stands, but a lot of people don't.

I do not think this is wise, especially as McCain is on record as saying he would appoint more like Scalia. It would be very, very good for Team Blue to make this extremely widely known.

GravatarI sincerely hope that the Dems strip him of his Committee assignments and kick him out of the caucus

They can't, they need him just to bolster dem numbers. Lieber is in a good spot now, but come the revolution...

off with his head!! (please)

GravatarSo, how can I get from Dulles to Union Station?
I may have asked this before but I've forgotten the answer.
Marcellina

Cab to the Orange Line at Fairfax (there may be a shuttle).

Gravatar why is there not crying icon? why crying? Don't they come home? I've been googling this and can only get info on the trucks and stuff- not the personnel.

GravatarThanks jac. Price of the cab, roughly?

GravatarThey can't, they need him just to bolster dem numbers.
el

That only matters as long as there are votes to get through. Once the important bills are passed, kick him.

GravatarDulles? Isn't there a bus that leaves right from the terminal? I know we didn't have a car, and I don't remember taking a taxi.

Gravatar(Still searching for the second cup of coffee but the bitterness just boiled over: why the fuss for this Russert guy? I really thought him to be an apologist for the Republicans at best and a tool of the rich at his worst. He certainly never represented the voice of Americans in his endeavors. He was constantly obsequious to the elite and contemptuous to anyone who tried to confront the lies that permeate our national discourse. In fact, he may have been the leader of the contempt brigade that is trotted out to heap scorn on anyone who even approaches telling the truth about the economic and political realities in this country.

fie. More coffee!)

GravatarSheetskis!

GravatarMcCain is on record as saying he would appoint more like Scalia

Amazing this plays well universally with republicans, but twas always thus: jingoism vs. rational humanistic behavior

GravatarMarcellina-- Check Washington Flyer web site (they run all transport including cabs from Dulles). I'm pretty sure they have a bus at least every half hour to the metro station.

GravatarDon't they come home?

I expect not. Would love to be proven wrong.

GravatarMarcellina -- Dulles to Union Station

GravatarThanks jac. Price of the cab, roughly?
Marcellina

Just taking a wild guess, to Fairfax or Dunn Loring would be about $20.

There's also bus service:

http://wmata.com/metrobus/maps/va.pdf

GravatarIf the GOP really makes this election in part about the Supremes, they can kiss goodbye the Hillary voters

i think it will be a cocktail of shmear obama, call the dems assholes for not drilling in ANWR to lower oil (which it won't) and fear fear fear

GravatarStill looking but apparently California tried to get permission/legal action to bring some home for wildfires. Still can't find if it happened.

I can't imagine that we would not let these soldiers come home if their family was in peril.

GravatarWashington Flyer shuttle's nine bucks direct from Dulles to West Falls Church metro... that's what I do.

GravatarWillendorf Venus,
It seems that they do NOT get to come home. That is so cruel. Now I get the crying.

GravatarHey, at least now there is a war to fight! If the Iraqis unite against the US, we can now kill any and all of them!!! No more (is the one supporting us or not questions)

Gravatar"there better be a Fantastic Sam's here when I get back"-Michael O'Hanlon to Maliki

GravatarThis then is the end of Bush's Splendid Iraq Adventure. Good thing it's happening on his watch.

GravatarHas this site published a note about a singular success about the progress in Iraq?

When you invest in defeat, you root for defeat. The Left are extraordinary fans. And they are still wearing those Che shirts and the newly happenin Lenin line from Urban Outfitters.

So edgy.
