GravatarFor comments we should ask John McCain if his having an affair and then divorcing his crippled wife and then marrying his bimbo before the divorce was finalized has had a detrimental effect on Obama's Presidential bid.

What negative effect will McCain's offering up his wife for a titty contest have on Obama's campaign?

Is Obama's arrogance in not answering for other mens affairs going to stand in the way of his getting elected?

GravatarCNN also just did a piece on whether the Edwards affair would have negative impacts on Obama's campaign. They showed clips of Edwards endorsing Obama. There was about 3 minutes of discussion, and John McCain's name was not mentioned once, worthy of an Olympic medal in the bending-over-backwards event. There was a conclusion approvingly for the Republicans in saying that they would restrain from making this an issue in the campaign. Somewhere, Vitter and Craig are smiling.

Man, the election can't come soon enough. It's getting really depressingly stupid out there.

Of course, once Obama wins big, the freakshow will begin in earnest. The Repugs, in the impotence of their rage, will try to destroy him with a ferocity that will make the Clinton Years look like a sort of zen calm.

But at least in the week or so after the election we'll be able to look arund and go "La vie est belle".

GravatarI actually do think it could be a problem for Obama. Not because it should be. But because two very high-profile Democrats have been involved in sex scandals in the last six months. That hurts the image of the party, and Obama is the party in this election. Most people who vote don't care that much about the issues. They vote their "gut." They're not going to have a good gut feeling about Democrats.

This is a minor problem for Obama the same way Ted Stevens corruption is a problem for McCain.

one of these things is illegal and directly impacts your political decisions.

the other isn't illegal and is completely irrelevant to political performance.

GravatarI think the vast differences in compensation between victims of the September 11 casualty and those who die serving our country in Uniform are profound.
No one is really talking about it either, because you just don't criticize anything having to do with September 11. Well, I can't let the numbers pass by because it says something really disturbing about the entitlement mentality of this country. If you lost a family member in the September 11 attack, you're going to get an average of $1,185,000. The range is a minimum guarantee of $250,000 all the way up to $4.7 million.

If you are a surviving family member of an American soldier killed in action, the first check you get is a $6,000 direct death benefit, half of which is taxable!!!!!!

Next, you get $1,750 for burial costs. If you are the surviving spouse, you get $833 a month until you remarry. And there's a payment of $211 per month for each child under 18. When the child hits 18, those payments come to a screeching halt.

GravatarBecause Elizabeth knew about the affair and allowed

plantsman

Oh gosh, I seem to have clutched these pearls so hard they've broken. How can I get anxious about Edwards weenie now?

GravatarKeep in mind that some of the people who are getting an average of $ 1.185 million up to $4.7 million are complaining that it's not enough. Their deaths were tragic, but for most, they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Soldiers put themselves in harms way FOR ALL OF US, and they and their families know the dangers.

We also learned over the weekend that some of the victims from the Oklahoma Citybombing have started an organization asking for the same deal that the September 11 families are getting. In addition to that, some of the families of those bombed in the embassies are now asking for compensation as well.

You see where this is going, don't you? Folks, this is part and parcel of over 50 years of entitlement politics in this country. It's just really sad. Every time a pay raise comes up for the military, they usually receive next to nothing of a raise. Now the green machine is in combat in the Middle East while their families have to survive on food stamps and live in low-rent housing. Make sense?

GravatarBecause Elizabeth knew about the affair and allowed
John to market their "loving family" shtick in the campaign.
plantsman

For fuck's sake. Millions of Americans have had affairs and stayed together and stayed in love. People make mistakes all the time. No one has any fucking clue what their marriage is all about.

I'm going for a run. Maybe that will make me feel better.

GravatarWhat study are you guys talking about?

TJ posted a link to the NYT on the last thread. The article in the link discussed an "study" claiming to show that plaintiff's incorrectly proceeded to trial more often than defendants. It also claimed that defendants' mistakes in going to trial were more costly than plaintiffs'. It further stated that errors were more likely when plaintiffs were paying a contingency fee and defendants did not have an insurance carrier handling the defense.

It did, however, point a few flaws in the study.

GravatarI'm just reporting what was said, not advocating for it.

Gravatar However, our own US Congress voted them-selves a raise. Many of you don't know that they only have to be in Congress one time to receive a pension that is more than $ 15,000 per month. And most are now equal to being millionaires plus. They do not receive Social Security on retirement because they didn't have to pay into the system. If some of the military people stay in for 20 years and get out as an E-7, they may receive a pension of $1,000 per month, and the very people who placed them in harm's way receives a pension of $15,000 per month.

I would like to see our elected officials pick up a weapon and join ranks before they start cutting out benefits and lowering pay for our sons and daughters who are now fighting.

My entire complaint rests on the huge amount of wall to wall fucking overkill this story gets from the media. And the whole self-amping (well, we have to do it so much because everybody else is doing it so much) has turned the press into a bunch of mindless caricatures of lemmings.

Not necessarily true. It really depends on timing and your MOS in several cases.
When I was in, there was a shortage in some areas, and the promotion points were really low.

In my job, there was an excess. It took six years for some people to get their e-5 stripes because of it. If you are in the infantry and are an e-7 after 20, you are likely a fuck up. In other fields, not necessarily.

Wise words. Repubs love an issue that will divide Dems.

GravatarOK, I found the article and it doesn't make much sense.
The findings are consistent with research on human behavior and responses to risk, said Martin A. Asher, an economist at the University of Pennsylvania and a co-author. For example, psychologists have found that people are more averse to taking a risk when they are expecting to gain something, and more willing to take a risk when they have something to lose.

Isn't it inconsistent? Because the study shows that plaintiffs(who are expecting to gain something) are more likely to risk going to trial, when they would have been better off settling.

GravatarWhat pisses me off about Edwards is he took a bunch of money from us poor folk under some sorta false pretenses.

GravatarIn the months leading up to the end of his first marriage, I guess all McCain did with Cindy was exchange wistful gazes and maybe a furtive hand squeeze now and then.

GravatarThe problem with Edwards is not that he did something stupid. Or that the media is being stupid in its coverage of him.

The problem with Edwards is that he should have been Attorney General in an Obama administration, and now he can't be. Because of his stupidity.

And we lose as a result.

Fuck him, he's an asshole. A reckless asshole.

I can't speak to Army or Air Force, but I still wouldn't shake a stick at SFC if it is equivalent to a Gunny. But keep in mind that you are retiring after 20 years as an E-7. That sort of means you made it to E-7 in at least 18 years, more likely 16.
