"These shows have a bad impact on our traditions," said Babrak Yusufzai, 19, a political science student wearing jeans and a Yankees baseball cap. "Children are learning about Indian ceremonies instead of Muslim ones." Yusufzai said he liked the idol-search show called "Afghan Star" but added, "Why don't they have idols of learning or law, not just singing songs?"
Don't try to make it in show biz, Babrak.

I considered it later while wearing my conservative thinking cap and I think it is analogous to conservative-think on welfare.
Why should my tax money go toward supporting a segment of the population that is lazy and won't work?
Why should my tax dollar go toward helping health care problems that resulted from an unhealthy lifestyle?
Why should my tax dollars via the NEA go toward supporting art like "Piss Christ"?
All of these are a small percent of the whole program and don't justify eliminating the whole program to remedy it.

"The world crisis is now past its peak. The initial quadrupling of the price of crude oil after the Arabs cut output was a temporary response that has been working its own cure. Higher prices induced consumers to economize and other producers to step up output . . . In order to keep prices up, the Arabs would have to curtail their output to zero; they would not for long keep the world price of crude at $10 a barrel. Well before that point the cartel would collapse."

Yeesh! Conservative! Here, there, everywhere, they hate and hate and repress and repress. They feel obliged to stamp out all human activity.
I once explained to a conservative that the sexual revolution really got started because of the automobile.
Young people could tell their parents they were going to the movies, they'd drive off to a motel, do it, take a shower, then meet their buddies at the malt shop where they could get the rundown on what the film was about, then they'd get home and tell their parents how much they enjoyed the film.
My conservative buddy looked puzzled "No, no, that suggests that people just naturally...no, that can't be it...no."

The UK has formally laid claim to 200,000 sq km of the Atlantic seabed surrounding Ascension Island as the international race to establish sovereignty over underwater territories gains momentum.
In a submission lodged with the UN this month Britain has demarcated its bid to gain control of the area - almost equivalent to the UK's entire land surface.
The mountainous ocean floor up to 350 miles from the isolated island in the South Atlantic is believed to contain extensive mineral deposits. With no near neighbours, other states are unlikely to challenge the claim.
The deadline of May 2009 for countries to submit maps of their underwater stakes is approaching, intensifying diplomatic rivalries in contested parts of the globe, such as the Arctic and Antarctica.
Claims are being processed by the New York-based UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. States may extend their territorial rights over the seabed beyond the 200-mile limit and up to 350 miles from an adjacent coastline.
They have to prove that the seabed is part of a continuous continental shelf adjoining their coastline.
There is such a thing as "the general welfare" that they may have heard of once or twice.
When right wing speechmakers recite the preamble to the Constitution they either omit that phrase or add some really witty aside such as "not promote welfare generally".
This always draws big laffs from the sort of people who listen to right wing speechmakers...

120ml/4fl oz Pimms
prosecco or Champagne, to top
4 strawberries
4 large mint sprigs
4 cucumber strips

WASHINGTON — An internal audit of some $8 billion paid to U.S. and Iraqi contractors found that nearly every transaction failed to comply with federal laws or regulations aimed at preventing fraud, in some cases lacking even basic invoices explaining how the money was spent.
Of the money paid during a five-year period _ from 2001 through 2006 _ $7.8 billion in payments skirted billing rules with some violations egregious enough to invite potential fraud, warned the Defense Department's inspector general.
The findings provided fresh fodder for anti-war Democrats, who say the Bush administration has turned a blind eye to the problem of corruption and fraud by relying too heavily on contractors to manage the war.
"There is something very wrong when our wounded troops have to fill out forms in triplicate for meal money while billions of dollars in cash are handed out in Iraq with no accountability," said Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
Results of the investigation were released at a committee hearing on Thursday, the same day the House approved legislation by Waxman intended to strengthen anti-fraud measures and increase transparency in contracting. Waxman's bill was passed as part of a major military policy bill, which authorizes $601.4 billion in defense spending.
In its report, the IG estimated the Army made more than 180,000 commercial payments from stations in Iraq, Kuwait and Egypt in the five-year period. The payments were made for various supplies and services, including bottled water, food and trucks.
In one example, $11 million was paid to a U.S. company without any record of what goods or services were provided, the IG wrote.

Heavy rain and flooding in Chile have displaced 15,000 people and shut down the world's largest copper mine, according to the government.
So far, five people are known to have died in the floods - described by some as the worst in at least two decades.
Road and railway bridges have collapsed, and at least seven rivers have burst their banks.
There is also a shortage of drinking water after floodwaters churned up sediment at water treatment plants.
The rains started in the middle of this week and have hardly stopped since. The hardest-hit region has been the central valley, immediately south of the capital, Santiago.
A railway bridge collapsed under the weight of a raging torrent of water and a road bridge fell apart on the Pan American Highway, in effect cutting the country in two.
Those who have died were either swept away by rising rivers or killed by mudslides and falling trees.

Eight Italian policemen and three other people have been injured in clashes over the site of a new rubbish dump in a densely populated suburb of Naples.
Most injuries occurred overnight but two police were hurt in the morning, trying to remove a bus being used as a barricade near the site in Chiaiano.
The site is one of 10 approved by the new government in a bid to end a crisis over uncollected rubbish in Naples.
Some fear the proximity of the dump could affect local people's health.
The situation in Chiaiano remains tense with residents appearing determined to resist the use of a local stone quarry as a landfill, the BBC's David Willey reports.

Russia and China have condemned a US plan for a global missile defence shield, saying it will set back international disarmament efforts.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a joint statement with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing.
The US says the shield, parts of which it plans to deploy in Europe, is key to its own security and that of allies.
Both Russia and China have opposed the plans in the past but this is the first time they have come together to do so.
The US, which wants to locate a radar base in the Czech Republic and an interceptor missile site in Poland, says the system will offer protection against missiles fired from states like Iran and North Korea.
However, the plans have soured US-Russian ties, with Moscow fearing that the system could be used against Russia.

Prague- Almost two-thirds of Czechs are against the stationing of the U.S. radar base in the Czech Republic, while fewer than one-quarter are for the project, according to a poll conducted by the polling agency CVVM in early April and released today.
The public mood has been stable since 2006, with only a small decrease in the number of the opponents since the end of 2007, CVVM analysts said.
The plan is mainly supported by the voters of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS), while the rest of the parties reject it, most resolutely the voters of the opposition Social Democrats (CSSD) and Communists (KSCM).
Some 70 percent of Czechs believe a referendum should decide on the plan, the opposite view is held by 20 percent.
The United States wants to build the radar base in the Brdy military district, some 90 km southwest of Prague, and a base for ten interceptor missiles in Poland as part of the missile shield that is to protect its territory and a large part of Europe against missiles that states like Iran might launch.

Opponents of the U.S. radar base in the Czech Republic Jan Tamas and Jan Bednar will continue with their protest hunger strike they started on Tuesday, they told journalists Saturday.
They vowed to only accept liquids until some of their demands are met such as the promise to end Czech talks with the USA, the referendum on the issue and the beginning of "an open, real democratic discussion."
They said they had not seen any reaction from the government.
They said their protest had mobilised the opponents of the radar base in the Czech Republic.
"The hunger strike has sent a clear signal to the people who are opposed to the radar," Tamas told journalists.

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) — The Red Cross in South Africa said Saturday it was caring for 25,000 displaced people following nearly two weeks of anti-immigrant violence amid emerging evidence of a humanitarian crisis.
The new figures came as the army said it had shot dead a man in a Johannesburg township during joint operations with the police aimed at quelling the tide of unrest.
"The Red Cross is helping over 25,000 people spread around 21 locations, mainly in Johannesburg," Red Cross director for southern Africa, Francoise Le Goff, told AFP.
"The situation has deteriorated since now it (the violence) is starting in Durban and Cape Town."
Aid group Doctors Without Borders (MSF - Medecins Sans Frontieres) also warned of the danger of illness among the displaced and said the government needed to make a decision on how victims would be cared for.
Police reported a generally calmer situation across the country Saturday amid signs the vicious attacks of the past two weeks, in which armed mobs have purged some poor neighbourhoods of immigrants, were abating.
At least 42 people have been killed and more than 500 arrested since the unrest broke out in a Johannesburg slum area nearly two weeks ago before spreading to seven of the country's nine provinces.

At this point in time, Republicans will not and cannot "face up to the hard reality" because it would be an admission that the last seven years have been a dreadful mistake, a mistake they perpetuated at the costs of thousands of lives.

An international bidding war broke out yesterday over Expro International, the UK oil and gas industry services provider, between Halliburton, the world’s second-biggest oilfield contractor, and a private equity consortium led by Candover Partners.
Umbrellastream, a special purpose vehicle made up of Goldman Sachs, Capital Partners, AlpInvest Partners and Candover, raised its bid to £15.50 a share in cash, valuing Expro at £1.71 billion. The independent directors of Expro said they recommended the new cash offer, having on April 17 agreed to a bid of £1.61 billion, including £200 million debt, from the same party.
The improved bid was in reaction to Halliburton’s confirmation yesterday morning that it was prepared to offer £1.7 billion or £15.25 a share, also in cash and subject to conditions.
Expro’s shares closed 85p or 5.5 per cent higher at £16.26. Shares in Halliburton were down 51 cents at $47.77.
In April, many analysts forecast that Halliburton would not come back with a counter offer given the high price. But with oil prices rising to a record $135 a barrel and companies desperately searching for new sources of energy, Expro’s oil well production-testing technology is increasingly valuable.
Halliburton, formerly led by US Vice-President Dick Cheney, yesterday “strongly urged” Expro’s investors to take no action, as it considered its position. It has until June 20 to update its proposal, although a response is expected sooner.
This is one of those projects I hope that gets cancelled sometime on January 20, 2009.

Afghanistan was an annoying distraction that interfered with President AWOL's hard-on for Iraq.
That Boosh's march to Baghdad began the month of his inauguration has been well chronicled and documented in books by Tommy Franks, Paul O'Neill, Ron Suskind etc. etc. etc.
The only complicating factor was that one damaged and threatened us, and the other one did not.

Gordon Brown is losing the confidence of his cabinet as an increasing number of ministers voice the fear that Labour cannot win the general election under the prime minister's leadership, authoritative sources told the Guardian yesterday.
Labour's disastrous performance in Crewe and Nantwich in the early hours of Friday - leading to the Tories' first byelection gain in a quarter of a century - has persuaded cabinet ministers that the prime minister's position is fast becoming irretrievable.
"People are not far away from thinking that we cannot win under Gordon Brown," a senior Labour figure said last night. "We wish it was different from what it is. But it is hard to avoid looking at the facts."
The growing collapse in confidence in Brown's leadership became clear yesterday in the wake of Labour's poor byelection performance as the Tories won on a swing of 17.6% - the sort of figure that would place David Cameron in Downing Street with a susbstantial majority.
Had the byelection happened on its own, Brown would probably face no more than a whispering campaign, senior sources say. But two factors are convincing cabinet ministers that Labour's poor performance is directly linked to the prime minister: the local election reverses earlier this month, and Brown's decision to give away £2.7bn in tax cuts in an emergency mini-budget designed to solve the crisis provoked by the abolition of the 10p starting rate of tax in his last budget as chancellor last year.
Minority Leader in a Storm
By KIMBERLEY A. STRASSEL

"Awful. Awful." That's John Boehner's candid answer when I ask what life is like for House Republicans these days. The question the 58-year-old minority leader is pondering is how long that awfulness will last.
The GOP is in a panic after a string of special election defeats that suggest voters haven't forgiven Republicans for straying from small-government principles. Rival wings of the party are fighting over where to go next. About the only thing everyone agrees on: If the GOP doesn't redefine itself soon, it's facing a rout this fall.
Some people suggest that those special election defeats were because of the war and the economy, but you probably know best.

Labour have been in power for too long and thus are running out of ideas and energy, happens to any ruling party.
it is quite possible that we will have a Tory government at the next General election
Labour really does have stupid people if they thought scrapping the 10p tax rate would not bother anyone, of course it did, for certain sections of the population having £10 taken away every week really hurts them
everyone told Labour how stupid it would be but they went ahead anyway

The police in Canada have a gruesome mystery to puzzle over as after a human foot was found washed up on a beach near the west-coast city of Vancouver.
It is the fourth such foot to be found on beaches in the area in the past eight months.
All four of the feet were wearing socks and running shoes and all four had been in the sea for some time.
But police say they have no idea how or why they came to be there and hope DNA tests, now under way, may help.
Last August, two human feet washed up on the beaches of two small islands north of Vancouver. Then in February another single, right foot drifted ashore.
And now a fourth - again a right foot - has been found - this time on a beach in suburban Vancouver. The city's newspapers and coffee shops are buzzing with theories to explain the mystery.
Organised crime, boating accidents - even the 2004 Asian tsunami - are all being offered as possible, if amateur, solutions. The professional detectives are saying very little.

Edward Smith, who lives with his current "girlfriend" – a white Volkswagen Beetle named Vanilla, insisted that he was not "sick" and had no desire to change his ways.
"I appreciate beauty and I go a little bit beyond appreciating the beauty of a car only to the point of what I feel is an expression of love," he said.
"Maybe I'm a little bit off the wall but when I see movies like Herbie and Knight Rider, where cars become loveable, huggable characters it's just wonderful.
"I'm a romantic. I write poetry about cars, I sing to them and talk to them just like a girlfriend. I know what's in my heart and I have no desire to change."
He added: "I'm not sick and I don't want to hurt anyone, cars are just my preference."
Mr Smith, 57, first had sex with a car at the age of 15, and claims he has never been attracted to women or men.

dont get too cocky the far left is popping corks too soon. obama and all the dem trees in the forest will fall in november. from the politico
"But the contours of the electoral map, combined with McCain’s unique strengths and the nature of Obama’s possible vulnerabilities, have led to a cautious and muted optimism that McCain could actually surpass Bush’s 35-electoral-vote victory in 2004. Though they expect he would finish far closer to Obama in the popular vote, the thinking is that he could win by as many 50 electoral votes."
