We are always running smack into an unresolvable conflict between politics as it theoretically should be practiced and the myriad slapdash methods by which it actually proceeds. The danger of giving up the ideals and giving over wholly into the prevalent practices are just as clearly seen -- Atwater, Rove, et.al. names that inspire revulsion in all honest people not for whom they work but how. The reptile brain is always there but we evolved the other parts to supplant it not to exalt it. Our problem is always going to be that that is an opinion, and not one that is universally shared.
