When republicans are on the show, the box will say "Yes" "Brilliant" "You're a true American" "You remind me of my dad". When a democrat is on the show, the box will say "You contradicted yourself 10 years ago" "Why do you hate America?" "Why do you favor raising taxes?"

GravatarSo? Cheney admits to erring?
Of course, China still has intentions of making an orifice in Cheney's head and preserving in plastic his wrongheadness for a travelling road show. If only he would release his remains to them.

GravatarFrom which orifice did Will get it?

http://ohiodailyblog.com/content...uth-house- floor
On June 5th, the truth-challenged "Mean Jean" Schmidt took her misspeaking skills to the floor of the House, denouncing federal limitations on drilling for oil by declaring that China is currently drilling off the Florida coast (video here, about 1:52 in):

This very day there is indeed drilling activity off of our country's coast. Not by our U.S. companies. That would be illegal. Instead, the Chinese are drilling off the coast of Florida with their new energy partner, Cuba.

GravatarIs the level of expert analysis that brought us to the invasion and occupation of Iraq? No CIA or DIA intelligence, Judith Fucking Miller.

I think it was. None of the evidence for invading cited by this administration came from an intelligence agency but from the reporters this administration is deeply in bed with.

GravatarUnfortunately, George Will's sphincter has welded itself shut from years and years of being so tightly puckered. So this revelation had to have come from his vagina. Logic, pure and simple.

People are starving, being killed in an illegal war, suffering from floods and storms, people are being raped and murdered by men in quasi-government organizations that are being sanctioned and EXCUSED by our government, the elite are partying on the charred bones of the poor and we are expected to mourn the passing of a fool.

Sorry. I have other things to attend to. . . .

Let's share with everyone: THIS cannot be said often or loudly enough.

(I just told my sister of my conversation with my best man at my wedding on Monday - we had not seen each other for thirty-five years, he is a minister - and we were in agreement that America has SEVERELY lost its way. Even the church, his interest area, is guilty of the sin of forgetting what is important. It is like we have forgotten that it is our OBLIGATION to be good people FIRST.)

Frankly, Novak has to figure into this somewhere. So, my guess is that Cheney told one of his people to leak it one of Novak's people, who then claimed to verify it for George Will, because Cheney told Will, when he leaked it to Will, that Novak was a second source.

Unless Tim Russert was the second source, but, we'll never know, will we? Unless Tim Russert blabbed to Mike Allen, so Allen would be impressed with Timmeh's connections to the VP's office.

Gravatari'm an iowa native and attended the u of i. this is heartbreaking to watch:

Iowa City, Ia. - The Iowa River surged another 2 feet in just 12 hours into Friday, forcing the University of Iowa to cancel classes for a week and to pool every resource possible to protect University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

By 4 p.m. Friday, 19 endangered university buildings - including the student union, Hancher Auditorium and the English-philosophy building - were either taking on water or volunteers were trying everything to block it.

"This is an emergency such as we've never seen before, with unprecedented threats to our campus," U of I President Sally Mason said. "This is getting dangerous now."

As the river surged to hit 30.41 feet - 8 feet above flood stage, and 2 feet above the record of 28.52 feet set in August 1993 - officials drilled small holes in bridges to release pressure in hopes of staving off collapses. Police and aid workers were expected to set up satellite operations on both sides of the river.

The one thing that I still admire about Minnesota is that city and state governments will sometimes do the right thing. It's a little like Canada ... maybe its the proximity.

Houses, but particularly, condos are still popping up along the I-90/94 corridor like toadstools after a long rain. But, I am told the housing industry is soft and weakening. Talked to a guy that mortgaged his life to build a $600,000 mega-hut on the Missouri River around Toston. He estimates that he would let it go for $300,000 ...

Yeah, Michelle is in for it, murkins will have to learn about black culture.

I was fortunate to package photographic portraits of outstanding black women for a travelling show "Women of Courage" based on a Wellesley study of outstanding black women.

Study was done because in early to mid 1900's when black activist women affected unionization of workers on trains and other important civil rights achievements, PAPERS DIDN'T COVER it so no records exist.

Wellesley sent workers into the field to interview these outstanding women, document this history.

It's time black women get treated by members of the human race.

We are in fact witnessing a case study in how the media do "the news." They start from something either completely fabricated or with just a few grains of truth in it, subject to massive but unspoken or unthought qualification, chatter together nonstop with one another exaggerating their exaggerations until they come to some consensus based more on emotion and in crowd feelings of superiority of talent and perspective than anything else and then solemnly repeat the same invention forever as if it were indisputable fact. As with the story on Russert so has been the last 8 years or more of "media coverage."

This time, the incredibly lame surprise ending is -- that there's no incredibly lame surprise ending!!! What a masterstroke!

The plot: Essentially, it's a remake of "The Birds" except with trees. And since trees can't really move around or anything, the dramatic possibilities are necessarily, uh, limited.

Somebody really needs to revoke M. Night Shamalamadingdong's artistic license.

Also, Zooey Deschanel spends the entire movie googling out her eyes like Stepin Fetchitt.

Bob Herbert gets it:

Despite the focus on the housing crisis, gasoline prices and the economy in general, the press has not done a good job capturing the intense economic anxiety — and even dread, in some cases — that has gripped tens of millions of working Americans, including many who consider themselves solidly middle class.

Working families are not just changing their travel plans and tightening up on purchases at the mall. There is real fear and a great deal of suffering out there.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/1...&hp& oref=slogin

Last thing I'll say about Russert. Death is something that should bond us all, remind us that, at birth and death, however our lives diverge, we're all human. To the extent that Russert's death allows people to empathize with a family whose member died young, before he should have, to the extent to which we therefore contemplate our own mortality, our own lives, and strive to make our lives better here and now, and the lives of others better, here and now, in consequence, Russert, or any other human being, is not mourned in vain. To the extent that an imperfect man, as we are all, is exalted beyond the sensible, separated from the rest of us, and from the truth of the matter, it becomes an empty ritual of those who, in celebrating Russert's life under such conditions, are really celebrating their own.

That said, (and Russert's shill rating aside)surely the story ceased being NEWS last night. If they want/need to have a wake, they can do it in private and bring in the second stringers to keep the network going.

Once his films referred mostly to themselves, they became forgettable.

GravatarGummo: thinking further, that's also the weakness of Bushism. They got hermetically sealed in what they called, famously, their own reality, and didn't listen to other opinions, didn't collect information that might contradict their views or show that their policies were failing. They fired folk who told the truth, and kept on doing what they were doing. The catastrophic results argue for Bushism's utter philosophical inadequacy.

The media, which, as you point out and the Russert wake demonstrates anew, have become relentlessly self-referential, are an ideal foil for Bushism on this basis.

GravatarI've worked a little bit in a species of broadcast journalism -- radio news -- and I've got a secret for all the journalists out there: it's not that hard. The only thing that makes it difficult is meeting deadlines and not flubbing your lines. Everything else is relatively easy.

GravatarProfWomat --

Exactly.

There is a show on E! called The Soup that reports, in a very funny mocking way, on TV bottomfeeding crap - talk shows, reality shows, soap operas, stuff like that.

"Today's top story: Brit Hume was stricken with a cold today and had to be rushed to the doctor's office. An official spokesman for Mr. Hume says the cold appears to not be serious but that he will be on a round-the-clock regimen of antihistamines and hot tea for the duration. Donations of tissues and chicken soup can be sent to...."

GravatarOh, this is hilarious - actual transcript:

Barnicle: he never had an agent, did he

Jack Welch: no he was his own agent but he got more money cause he would use his Irish charm

Barnicle: but he never got a house big enough to host that Christman party

Welch: but he had the house in Nantucket!!

I've never had any illusions about Olbermann. He went along with the Clinton Witch Hunt on the original MSNBC for quite some time, although he did have the good sense to eventually quit because of it (the key word being "eventually").

I don't think he'd necessarily "turn" on "liberals" at the drop of a hat, either - but I do think a key moment came when he joined in the "rally 'round the flag" bullshit when Hitlery called out MSNBC over Shuster's and, by extension, Tweety's obvious sexism. He could have REALLY shown his commitment of journalistic ethics and have gotten rid of fucking Tweety to boot if he'd stood up. Instead, he joined in the Hitlery bashing with the rest of them and laughed it up with "the boys."

GravatarI've beaten this horse before, but is there really anyone who thinks Olbermann is a free agent? Can simply say whatever he wants to and pick and choose what is broadcast on that incredibly valuable and expensive airtime that is owned by his employer?

I happen to admire his intelligence and find him entertaining, and I'm glad that MSNBC chose to market at least once program at my demographic, but he is first and foremost an employee of MSNBC. The Hillary demonization obviously came from orders from above- it was a complete blanket, all the MSNBC pundits engaged in it.

Very very little gets on primetime air by mistake and without vetting.

To say Olberman had/has free will and could have stood up and taken another path is 100 percent naive.
