Wasn't there a court ruling saying other states couldn't adopt California standards?
I think it depends upon which standards are in question. For example, the Northeast Consortium sued a few years ago to adopt particulate standards equivalent to California's, and I think that eventually forced the adoption of country-wide standards for low sulfur diesel fuel and new diesel engine standards that more or less equaled those of California.
But, the most recent flap over standards was that California had added CO2 to its list of emissions that CARB could regulate. The automakers went bonkers, and the EPA ruled that, no, CA couldn't do that on its own, and California sued the EPA. That suit is still in progress, and a dozen other states have joined California in the meantime.

He said foreign affairs and the environment trump everything and anything Obama does economically can always be fixed later.

n December…federal regulators denied California’s request for mandating that fuel economy reach a 42-and-a-half gallon average by 2020.
Congress set a different standard last year…about seven miles per gallon less than the California plan.
But at least 20 other states have adopted or are considering the standards set in California…
So automakers and auto dealers are fighting a bid by California to have the federal ruling against state standards reversed.
Still…few analysts predict any changes will happen before the election in November…

It is hard to imagine anything spontaneous happening in a presidential campaign photo op in a war zone among people submitting for years to a rigid command hierarchy, but it is entirely possible that given his huge support among Blacks they went out of their way or asked on their own account. Getting Rovey it also sounds like the kind of poison gift they gave CBS, setting up a situation that they can later exploit while exonerating themselves.

Sounds like McCain doesn't want to accept the facts on the ground.
Obama: I think 16 months is about right for withdrawal
McCain: Go to Iraq and get the facts on the ground from the people on the ground before planning to surrender to the terrorists.
Maliki: I think 16 months is about right for withdrawal, maybe 15 months.

If Atrios wants to see what a really "walkable" neighborhood looks like, he ought to come visit me on historic Jackson Blvd., in Chicago.
Of course, we don't have a Starbucks within walking distance, but there are three real coffee shops instead. Within 6 blocks there's the best high school in Chicago (Whitney Young), a brand new grammar school being built, two huge parks (one of which is at this very moment hosting the Pitchfork Music Festival) and stops on both the Blue Line and the Pink Line (a subway and elevated train). The Jackson Bus stops on the corner of my block and takes you into the Loop in exactly 11 blocks and will drop you in front of the Art Institute in 15 blocks (walkable on a nice day). Within 6 blocks, we've got everything from public housing to multi-million dollar 19th century townhouses (built before the Chicago Fire). Six block West of here is the United Center where the Bulls and Black Hawks play. Oh yeah, my wife walks the 7 blocks to her office on the UIC campus and the Rush St. Luke's medical campus is 5 blocks South and Cook County Hospital is 6 blocks SouthWest.

MCsame campaign will be revising that statement.
they likely will say something like this: Maliki statement proves mcsame is right and that the surge has worked. If Ob had his way then there wouldnt have been a surge and wouldnt have been success.
Except al Maliki took that away from him:
"So far the Americans have had trouble agreeing to a concrete timetable for withdrawal, because they feel it would appear tantamount to an admission of defeat. But that isn't the case at all. If we come to an agreement, it is not evidence of a defeat, but of a victory, of a severe blow we have inflicted on al-Qaida and the militias."
McCain has no choice, unless he wants to say Maliki knows nothing, and Petraeus is in charge. And then what? We're an empire? An occupying force?

Modern Germans apologize several times a day for being German and scrupulously avoid being overtly nationally proud. (The Japanese on the other hand are basically able to make the same noises they made under Tojo so long as they don't really reconquer anything.) Furthermore, the German mindlessness in the two world wars can be traced to finite sources. At the outset of the first world war, Germans did not remember what defeat was like in any living person's lifetime, and were cresting on a long wave of smashing victories over opponents who were either superior or rated as such. They literally could not imagine failure. This inability to comprehend losing a war they fought so well for so long, coupled with the humiliations of Versailles and the blockades toward the end of the war, explains their second madness. Picture the US in Germany's interwar position (bearing in mind that Germany was in a better position because they hadn't willfully destroyed their own manufacturing capacity to enrich their parasite caste).

It has been pointed out and illustrated several times, often with embarassing frankness, that they certainly do, and never in a good way. They either grant the Protocols and expect they're buying a share, or they want total aliyah completed so Jebus will return and roast their present allies in eternal fire as part of the end of reality. Iraq was Israel's primary state enemy and such wild-eyed anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists who don't know anything about hw Washington works as Henry Kissinger have said pretty bluntly that it would be Balkanized into a Shia, a Sunni-Turkmen-Shia and a Kurdish statelet, neither of which could threaten Israel or support its nonstate enemies as Saddam had.
