I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

Huh - first?

Gravatarvoluntary taxes are next!

Gravatari can understand hiding palin.

but why in the middle of the most democratic city in america.

in a shitty bar.

GravatarI'm all in favor of voluntary regulation. If I feel like driving 100 mph on the interstate, I'll stop for a cop only if I want to. If I'm smoking a joint (not that I know anyone to get some from), I'll admit to possession only if I want to.

Hey, I like this system.

(I'll call sheets - but only because I want to.)

GravatarFucking duh.

Off for rest of day.

Wonderful remembrance of Paul Newman.

Gravatarbut there are shitty republican bars like 10 miles away in delaware county.

huh. i just dont ge tit.

GravatarYeah, they kind of made compliance with the antitrust laws voluntary, too.

Who could have known the honor system wouldn't work with a bunch of thieves?

GravatarThe FBI will be rounding up some criminal motherfuckers before this is over.

GravatarI would support a voluntary system for MY income tax collection.

GravatarVoluntary regulating of a critical economic sector is a "moral hazard".

GravatarDamn. They got Paul Newman.

What will they think of next?

GravatarYeah,no one could have anticipated that thieves stole all the fucking money.

And now they want us to save their free market thieving machine.

GravatarCrap!! Paul Newman dead. That really sucks. He was such a role model for Hollywood or what Hollywood could be. I mean, how long was he with Joanne. Just shows you that all celebs don't have to be jackasses. I'm truly saddened.

GravatarWASHINGTON — The chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, a longtime proponent of deregulation, acknowledged on Friday that failures in a voluntary supervision program for Wall Street’s largest investment banks had contributed to the global financial crisis, and he abruptly shut the program down.

That would be one Chris Cox, of the SEC, who my wife correctly noted McCain incorrectly noted was from the "FEC." We chuckled over this one last night before jumping aboard the Crack Van.

Good time was had by all.

GravatarThat "voluntary regulation"

That's like asking a male rabbit and a female rabbit not to fuck each other.

Gravatar If she humiliates herself with Katie Couric, she'll be roadkill once Biden gets through with her.

Biden needs to be very careful how he handles this. Her total ineptitude could end up being a tar baby for him.

GravatarI hope none of you are placing any faith in the FBI doing anything worth waiting for. Have you forgotten the anthrax/Ivins shit?

GravatarIf you do not voluntarily give up and voluntarily pay a very modest fine I will ask you to voluntarily consult with your attorney about by request to voluntarily consider harsher measures.

And I mean it !!!

I've received three copies, actually -- one handed to me in Denver during the DNC, one in my mail, and one in my newspaper.

Interesting the papers they're targeting: all in swing states. No one could have predicted ...

GravatarA Jehovah's Witness with a Watchtower approached me as I waited for a bus yesterday. "I do not wish to be proselytized by you", I said. She blabbed about weird weather and I said, "I have my own thoughts about that, and they don't involve Christianity."

She walked away. Mission Accomplished.

GravatarThis bailout marks the historic birth of a new bigger government that only seeks to protect corporate interests, rather than individual interests. I do not know when the corporate entity became so superior in all respects to the individual.

The health of the fraud that is the stock market is far more important to the president and Congress than our Constitutuion, the social contract that holds us together and distinguishes us from others.

Just think of it as trickle down government. Your tax dollars go directly to the government. Then when government hands out the goddies it first goes to corporate interests and then it may trickle down to taxpayers. Such efficiency. Americans taxpayers are slaves.

If someone were to nuke DC I might flinch but it would be hard to cry.

GravatarHeckuvajob, Chris.

GravatarGeorge "High Functioning Moron" Bush

GravatarKrugman:

Tricky bailout politics

Nouriel Roubini has a characteristically scathing takedown of the Paulson plan, and here’s the thing: language aside, his economic analysis is similar to mine. The fundamental problem in the financial system is too little capital; bizarrely, the Treasury chose not to address that problem directly, by (say) purchasing preferred shares in financial institutions. Instead, the plan is premised on the belief that toxic mortgage-related waste is underpriced, and that the Treasury can recapitalize banks on the cheap by fixing the markets’ error.

The Dodd-Frank changes make the plan less awful, mainly by creating an equity stake. Essentially, this makes it possible for the plan to do the right thing through the back door: use toxic-waste purchases to acquire equity, and hence inject capital after all. Also, the oversight means that Treasury can be prevented from making the plan a pure gift to financial evildoers. But it’s still not a good plan.

On the other hand, there’s no prospect of enacting an actually good plan any time soon. Bush is still sitting in the White House; and anyway, selling voters on large-scale stock purchases would be tough, especially given the cynical attacks sure to come from the right. And the financial crisis is all too real.

So is it better to have no plan than a deeply flawed plan? If it was the original Paulson plan, no plan is better. Dodd-Frank-Paulson may just cross the line — let’s see what details we have if and when agreement is reached.

If the plan looks not-awful enough, I’ll be pro. But I won’t be cheering — I’ll be holding my nose.

GravatarThis bailout marks the historic birth of a new bigger government that only seeks to protect corporate interests, rather than individual interests. I do not know when the corporate entity became so superior in all respects to the individual.

Apparently, Gooey Side Dish isn't reading the polls.

GravatarThe more I think about McCain's performance last night, the worse it seems. He was like one of those little dolls where you pull the string and it spouts a canned phrase. He pretty much just spouted pre-canned talking points and scowled a lot, where Obama thought through the questions and engaged his opponent and the audience.

McCain did a decent job of getting his talking points out, but his lack of connecting to the audience and addressing the questions hurt him. And lets not even talk about the dishonesty, because that was nonstop and shameless.

GravatarI'm seriously at a loss to understand how distributing these hate DVDs somehow helps McCain.
That's gotta be a lotta money mailing out 28 million copies.

GravatarI've been meaning to comment about this:
It’s very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia. As Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to our state.”

So when Putin does it, he's rearing his head, and when we do it, it's protecting our country? Cognitive dissonance, anyone? ('course, that requires cognition in the first place...)

She'll be slightly better than in the Couric interview, since she's had an additional week, and the press will deem it a brilliant performance. FWIW, I agree with you; watching the debate half schmockered put me at the level of the average undecided voter; I thought McCain did well too. Offensive and on the offensive.

But the debates really don't matter, I don't think, unless the media can find some error to trumpet far and wide, e.g. Ford and Poland.

Remember that in '84 Reagan didn't even know where he was at the debate, and he still won.

GravatarLunch!

Shrimp Quesadillas with Tarragon Aioli
Make mini-quesadillas by cutting out small tortilla rounds, then serve as an hors d'oeuvre.

The aioli
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1 to 2 teaspoons chopped tarragon
Kosher salt, to taste
1/2 cup prepared mayonnaise
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
The quesadillas
1 ear corn
5 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, grated
8 ounces bay shrimp
1/2 cup finely chopped jicama
2 green onions, green part finely chopped, about 1/4 cup --
Zest from 1 lemon
8 flour tortillas, 8-inch diameter
1/2 cup guacamole, mildly spiced
For the aioli: Place garlic and tarragon in a mortar with a little salt to taste and blend together with pestle. Stir in the mayonnaise and lemon juice then refrigerate until ready to use.
The aioli can be made ahead.
For the quesadillas: Shuck corn and remove silks. Rinse then loosely wrap in parchment or place in a microwave-safe container. Microwave 2-3 minutes until cooked but still slightly crisp.
When cool enough to handle, cut kernels off and set aside. Divide the corn, cheese, shrimp, jicama and green onion among four tortillas, layering the ingredients. Top with a sprinkle of lemon zest.
Spread the remaining tortillas with tarragon aioli and place, aioli-side down atop the filling. If you have some aioli left, refrigerate for another use.
Heat a dry skillet over medium-low heat. Place a quesadilla in the skillet and cook, flipping at least once, until the cheese has melted and the tortillas are lightly browned. Repeat with the remaining quesadillas.
Cut quesadillas into wedges and top with some of the guacamole, or offer it on the side. Serve immediately.

The S.E.C.’s oversight responsibilities will largely shift to the Federal Reserve, though the commission will continue to oversee the brokerage units of investment banks....

No, no, no! This is all wrong! The Fed is an unconstitutional fraud controlled by international Jewish bankers and regulation is socialism!

Agreed. I also didn't give as much stock as I should have to the outright contempt McCain showed to Sen. Obama. To be honest, I didn't pay a lot of attention to style; both my wife and I were concentrating -- too much, it seems -- on what the candidates were saying and Jim Lehrer's clumbsy attempts to moderate.

Watching it again early this morning (gee I love Tivo) McCain's unease and refusal to even glance at Obama came through as obnoxious. In other words, it was pretty accurate.

GravatarAs opposed to, say, handing $700B to private corporations.

They'll never get the GOP to vote for this bull as long as it's seen as something like a bailout. I think what's likely happening in the Capitol is that they're finding a way to take the plan they had a deal on on Thursday and call it "insurance". The sheeple like insurance, it's capitalist.

Remember
that McCain says he's against torture. Well he is except for when he's for it.

"Senate Passes Interrogation Ban

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted 51 to 45 on Wednesday afternoon to ban waterboarding and other harsh interrogation methods used by the Central Intelligence Agency against high-level terrorism suspects.

Mr. McCain, a former prisoner of war, has consistently voiced opposition to waterboarding and other methods that critics say is a form torture. But the Republicans, confident of a White House veto, did not mount the challenge. Mr. McCain voted “no” on Wednesday afternoon."

GravatarThe SNL Skit & Focus Groups [Jonah Goldberg]

It's hard to guess what, exactly, the SNL skit will look like. I think the press is congealing around the (erroneous) idea that Obama won precisely because that's what the focus groups seem to be saying, or at least what the focus groups are saying allows the press to get away with claiming Obama won (for the record I think McCain won the parts I saw, but I've long argued that the press mostly cares what the polls say about these sorts of events). And SNL's instincts are, lamentably, to go with liberal conventional wisdom.

But, if I were writing the SNL skit, I would have the two candidates engage in a sympathy-for-veteran-families-and-other-noble- causes "Jewelry-off" playing on the "I have a bracelet too" comment from Obama.

"Oh yeah? I have this earing and two bangles...."

"Well, my nipple ring proves I care more about ...."

The reason you don't write SNL skits, Pantload, is because you're smelly stoopid.

GravatarYeah, I had to listen to the clip a couple of times, but McCain sure did say Horseshit. When Obama pointed out McCain said he would refuse to meet with the president of Spain. And the fact that McCain said that is a verifiable fact, since there's audio tape of McCain very clearly saying that. Now, McCain may have been confused about who he was talking about, but his campaign has denied that, and confirmed that he did, if fact, say he would not meet with the president of Spain. I don't know why McCain saying 'horseshit', unless he's referring to his original stupid statement about refusing to meet with Zapatero. That IS horseshit.

the other is that THERE ARE MORE DEMOCRATS IN THE ELECTORATE.

"what senator obama doesn't seem to understand" was the smear of the night. the focus group HATED it.

i was yelling at obama "answer that!" what i had in mind was something like:

"it isn't that i don't understand george bush and john mccain's foreign policy. i understand it only too well, having seen it fail for the last seven years. what senator mccain doesn't seem to understand is that there are alternatives. we don't have to keep following the same failed policies of the bush administration."

that would have been good, and been the grand slam obama would have liked.

All power, therefore, to the 50 state strategy. GravatarAs we've discussed before, the reason Vista got a bad rap was that Microsoft refused to tell hardware manufacturers that it required a minimum of 2-4GB RAM and 1GB VRAM to run nicely.

The firstgen Vista machines were underpowered, running that verdammnt desktop search by default, and used a new networking protocol that no-one had heard of.

As a new product rollout - EPIC FAIL.

GravatarHmmmm...a follow up:

Looking about the web, I see that there are plenty who see the $2 bill as lucky.

Great! Now we have an opportunity for a rational observation about the $2 bill and its unluckiness or luckiness:

1) If Palin craters in the debate, we'll know that the $2 bill was unlucky;

2) If Palin wins the debate, we'll know that superstition is not all it's cracked up to be.

GravatarTalking out loud about 'alpha maleness' only makes explicit what's been obvious for some time: that, while lip service is paid to intelligence, respect, courage, knowledge, education, decency and so on, that isn't what it's really about for a lot of people. It's about power, and what power can do for them and their clients.

GravatarAs we've discussed before, the reason Vista got a bad rap was that Microsoft refused to tell hardware manufacturers that it required a minimum of 2-4GB RAM and 1GB VRAM to run nicely.

There's also a whole bunch of "security" bullshit that you had to turn off manually. And the drivers thing.

GravatarGail Collins has a fun paragraph or two today:

(McCain) raced (to the Senate) in answer to the crisis call, after a brief detour to New York to deliver a desperately needed speech on fossil fuels at the Clinton Global Initiative. He could not have sounded more filled with passion about service and country and the need for his leadership. Then he joined President Bush, Obama and members of Congress in a White House meeting that his campaign had orchestrated, where he sat in near-silence as a bipartisan consensus fell apart.

One thing we now know for sure. Electing John McCain would be God’s gift to the profession of journalism. A story a minute.

There was a -lot- of manual tweaking that had to be done before the thing would run in any kind of an acceptable manner.  I suppose a lot of folks were reluctant to do it, or didn't know how.  One of the least useful out-of-the-box OSs I've been thru.

GravatarPeter Kirsanow (Cornholer):

Like Obama and millions of other Americans, my father also came to America from another country. Not after writing letters trying to come to a prestigious college here, but after escaping from the death squads of the Soviet empire. Once here, he saluted the American flag every single day. And although he has since passed, I'm certain he'd marvel at our ideals and values today. He'd hold Obama's statement in contempt.

Insulting the values and ideals of America may be fashionable in the salons occupied by William Ayers and Rev. Wright. It may be a matter of course at swanky fundraisers in San Francisco attended by pampered glitterati. But it's not something likely to fly with those who expect their president to have unwavering pride in America and the sacrifices of its best and bravest.

GravatarSo is Obama winning the debate good news for John McCain?

Gravatar"what senator obama doesn't seem to understand" was the smear of the night. the focus group HATED it.

It wasn't very credible, since Obama did such a good job of projecting his superior intellect and knowledge of the issues. It kind of boomeranged back on McCain, who seemed to have a hard time understanding anything.

GravatarWhat's Ted Turner up to these days, anyway?

Masturbating to Klute and crying a lot.

GravatarRE: Blinking, linked from TPM

I think people really are missing the point about McCain's failure to look at Obama. McCain was afraid of Obama. It was really clear--look at how much McCain blinked in the first half hour. I study monkey behavior--low ranking monkeys don't look at high ranking monkeys. In a physical, instinctive sense, Obama owned McCain tonight and I think the instant polling reflects that.

So McCain may have given away his status as a low-ranking monkey. I'd never even considered monkey rank.

Late Monkey Science Update: In case anyone's wondering, I looked up TPM Reader TB's page at the University he teaches at. And no doubt about it, he appears to be a genuine monkey scientist, or to be more specific a researcher on social cognition and behavior in primates.

GravatarI was underwhelmed by Obama for the most part

of course, obama didn't need to win (although polls show he did). he's ahead and trending up. mccain needed to change the momentum and he failed.

as cnn's sneider pointed out, the only thing obama needed to show in the foreign policy debate was that he was a serious alternative - that is, it is safe to elect him - because he wins on everything else anyway.

i'm still predicting 70%.

GravatarProf Wombat,

It was only with some good field studies and DNA sampling that researchers found that some primate beta males were sneaking off to have sex with the alpha males' harems. True with birds also. The classic case is with dunnocks in England. In fact, field biologists now use the term EPC (extra pair copulations). And in a number of studies, researchers have found that human children don't appear to have the right biological fathers.

It's how you know for sure, that McCain lost the debate.

There were no knockout blows in the first presidential debate of the fall, but John McCain out-pointed Barack Obama often enough to encourage his followers that he can somehow overcome the odds and deny the Democrats the victory that has seemed to be in store for them.

GravatarHate his son with the heat of a billion suns, the promoter of torture.
Anthony McCarthy | Homepage | 09.27.08 - 12:45 pm | #

i think you are judging him unfairly. his character uses torture, but he himself has pointed out that it is fiction and not meant as a model for foreign policy. also, if you watched the series (which, btw, had a terrific african american president in the first couple of seasons), once the torture proponents started using it, the plot shifted so that the president and his top croneys were the (incompetent) bad guys. and, plot lines showed that torture was counter productive. there were some very good arab-american characters, and one plotline was about a bunch of them that were arrested and sent to prison on the assumption that arab = terrorist and then turned out to be heros.

the problem wasn't with keifer, or even with the show (which was, after all, an action thriller). it was with morons who watched and could not distinguish reality from fantasy.

young guns 2, however, sucked big time.

There's a vast amount of mythology, about race, ancestry, nationality, and about being human, generally, that genetics challenges fatally. Startling, too, even if unsurprising, that there are those who misuse and distort the same tools, winding up with all sorts of uncritical crap like evolutionary psychology, whatever reincarnation of scientific racism is in favor this year, you name it...
