WASHINGTON: Pakistani military ruler Pervez Musharraf's has defied the advice of his American benefactors in imposing martial law and emergency, but Washington appears set to finesse the situation yet again because of what it sees as the overall US interest in the so-called war on terror.
Musharraf's precipitate step came hours after the Bush administration sent high level envoys, including the top U.S military commander for the region, Admiral William Fallon, to dissuade him from moving in that direction. But the military dictator is believed to have argued before Fallon that the security situation in the country and the war against al-Qaida and the Taliban demanded emergency measures.
Musharraf also rejected Fallon's offer to send U.S troops to the region, saying American forces would only exacerbate the situation, and demanding instead that Washington supply more military hardware.
No, baby, you're a PRINCESS!

From downstairs:
doesn't there have to more to any opposition other than just the waterboarding questions...
The "waterboarding question" is basically an offshoot of the question as to whether the president can bring illegal activity "within the law" with a wave of his bejeweled hand.
Mukasey says he can, which is a formulation straight out of the works of the Nazi legal theorist Carl Schmitt and is far more serious than whether a specific form of torture counts as torture.

Well, it goes back again to Schmitt's concept of the "state of exception," which specifically defines sovereignty as the ability to step outside the law in order to "preserve" it, and - in Girgio Agamben's extension of the argument - to define certain people as completely subject to the law while being completely outside it (cf. Gender card? It's the same approach used to keep libs/progressives and the poor from broaching the topic of wealth redistribution to the upper 5% of the nation.
Accuse the other of the very thing you are doing. Dems are not good at this, as it makes them uncomforable to do the opposite of what they say.
The MCM goes along with those with the money, so they go after the libs/progressives, poor and anyone else who goes against the powerful (who pay the MCMers their 6 and 7 figure salaries).

I kind of agree with Hecate here. All our candidates have issues. I am speaking of the big three.
Obama is wishy washy, wants to kiss the religious right butt. Hillary has the DLC/corporate baggage. Edwards only became a progressive after he left office, and has ties to some of the lending industry, and trial lawyers.
Nobody is perfect here. I would prefer a better woman candidate, but Hillary is what we have, and we have a Supreme Court that will have multiple vacancies, and I think she will do a decent job of that.

I don't know if you know of a number of psychological studies that test people's personalities before an after things such as winning the lottery or losing an arm or leg. Such events, whether positive or negative, have a short term effect. But in most cases, people's personality traits return to "normal" after a year or so, e.g., they are just as depressed, just as out-going, etc.

It may sound like a plot from the cult Channel 4 comedy Father Ted, but it's an issue giving increasing concern to the diligent clergy of Ireland.
One of the most high-profile priests has warned that clergymen are concerned that two masses or more in a day could push them over the legal limit for drink driving. As the Vatican forbids the use of non-alcoholic wine in the communion service, priests have no choice but to consume wine from the chalice on the altar.

With a stiff Northern wind churning first off Lake Michigan then careening the five mile length of Muskegon Lake before encountering the stalls of the Farmers' Market at Muskegon, it was a crisp morning to walk the aisles perusing the bounty of the fall harvest. But the bright sun ameliorated the edges of the wind and reduced it to a simple reminder of the coming winter.
And the produce was still spectacular. There were squash of all sorts and varieties. There was this wonderful grouping that were as large as any watermelon ever shipped from Dothan, Alabama. I looked at them and then at the legend that said, $3.00. I decided that there really was nothing I could do with a twenty-five pound fall squash and moved on. The German fingerling potatoes were so excellent looking I bought three boxes from the same vendor so my time was not wasted.
The onions were amazing. I bought small ones, medium ones, and one that was as large as child's size basketball. That one cost all of a dollar. (It has already been reduced by half as I used part of it for the slow-cooked great Northern beans I am making for supper)
And apples! Every variety you have ever heard of and quite a few that I am sure are as much a mystery to you as they are to me: Mutsu and Granny Smiths and McIntosh and Ida Reds and Golden Delicious and Red Delicious - each more spectacular than the other. We bought some wonderful Golden Delicious for eating and a half bushel of McIntosh to make the famous DWD Apple Pies. ($5.00 for about twenty pounds)
And cauliflower and broccoli - a dollar a head. And green peppers, three for a dollar. We bought six: Denver omelets and peppers and onions stir-fried with chicken breasts and stuffed peppers, you know? And the exotic peppers in buck boxes. Habeneros and Anaheims and others, all so delightfully colored that it really seems a shame to eat them.
Celery is still a dollar for a huge stalk and the pumpkins for cooking - small and tasty were also a dollar. Brussel sprouts, still on the stalk, looking like something from a science fiction movie were still available although I personally do not like them much.
Fuck Ron Paul.

Prof Wombat,
I was going to flippantly type, "Has an English philosopher ever said anything nice about a German philosopher?"
But then there is the Kemp Smith translation of Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason". I heard that German philosophy students read it because it is clearer than the original. Though I think Kemp Smith was Scottish, not English.

Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf has today declared emergency rule in a desperate bid to shore up his flagging rule, plunging the country into crisis and triggering angry condemnation at home and abroad.
Musharraf suspended the constitution and fired the chief justice, Muhammad Iftikhar Chaudhry, who spearheaded a powerful mass movement against him earlier this year. Troops entered the Supreme Court in the late afternoon where Chaudhry and six other judges declared illegal his declaration that he would rule under a provisional constitutional order. Chaudhry was reportedly under house arrest.
That is setting the bar pretty low.

I guess I don't see them as that similar, given that Edwards has disavowed his vote for the war, Obama has said he'd never have voted for it, and Hilary is still defending her vote.

The only Christian television station in the Holy Land has closed after 11 years because of a lack of funding.
Nativity television, or al-Mahed as it was known in Arabic, broadcast a mix of church services, films and discussion programmes 24 hours a day from a small studio in Bethlehem, not far from the Church of the Nativity.
Samir Qumsieh, the Greek Orthodox owner and director of the channel, said it had lost around $800,000, half of which were his own personal debts. "I have hundreds of letters thanking me and gratitude shields thanking us from all the churches but nobody translated this into financial support," he said. The station closed yesterday.
The only folks with the power to get rid of her are her fellow cowardly Senators. Each chamber retains the right to expel members.

Not me. I'm disappointed in Pelosi who as a woman and as a member of the progressive caucus should have done better. Reid is exactly as bad as I expected.
But while Pelosi and Reid were chosen without us, the Democratic electorate made a terrible mistake in 2004 by voting for the "electable" Kerry and abandoning Dean when the MSM declared him a kook. The same is happening today with Kucinich.

Pretty much where I sit. The Dems keep falling for the "safe" candidate, putting far too much stock in the electability thing and also that "will be able to get things done" thing, which is so nebulous and subjective that you can't really measure it, whereas you can look at the record and positions...

His position on the war aside, he's totally bonkers.
Have you listened to their debates? I don't think you appreciate where the baseline of sanity is in the Republican party. They have competitions on who would torture more. They argue about which one would start a war with Iran faster. They openly advocate President as dictator. Their economics consists of even more tax cuts for the rich. They don't believe in evolution and want Church in school. Paul is an island of sanity in that context - even though he believes all sorts of ridiculous nonsense.
