might I add that they rarely travel (and then pretty much only to the homes of relatives, or else packaged experiences like theme parks or sporting events), pay no attention to news of events outside the county line (but within said line have an apparently telepathic knowledge of the doings and whereabouts of every single person), and have no conception whatever of options in life.
that said, they're nice people overall, frequently generous to neighbors, treat newcomers well and you can live here amazingly cheaply. But that's also a trap, because you can't accumulate the money to get out once you realize how incredibly stupid you were to move here in the first place.

A veteran soldier who re-enlisted in the Army to support his 4-year-old son was killed Wednesday in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Thursday.
Spc. Gregory J. Missman, 36, of Batavia, Ohio, died in Bagram, Afghanistan, after his unit was attacked with small-arms fire, the department said. He was part of Fort Carson’s 704th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
Missman had served in the Army in the early 1990s but had been a civilian for 11 years, his father, Jim Missman, told WCPO in Cincinnati. He recently re-enlisted after a divorce to provide health insurance for his son, his father said.

Interior Department drops Bush plan to allow more logging
--------------------
The Western Oregon Plan Revisions, authorized last year, would have nearly quadrupled the land available to the timber industry in that state.
By Kim Murphy
July 17 2009
Reporting from Seattle — Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on Thursday scrapped a plan, authorized in the last days of the Bush administration, to nearly quadruple the allowable logging on federal lands in western Oregon -- including many prized old-growth stands -- and open up protected northern spotted owl habitat across Oregon, Washington and Northern California to timber companies.

Speaking of stupid talk radio hosts. This is from Steve in Fairfield and Brian Sussman last Friday.
SIF: Can I marry the person I’m in love with? Can I marry.
BS: As long as your… Steve
SIF: Brian?…come on.
BS: Steve, how uh okay Steve what if your Steve
SIF: It’s a yes or no answer Brian.
BS: NO YOU CAN’T YOU JERK! Now listen to me! No you can’t jerk. Now
listen to me right now. Don’t play this game with me Steve, what if
you’re in love with two people? My guess is as a homosexual man you’ve
been in love with a hundred how many you in love with right now Steve?
HOW MANY!
SIF: Here comes the name calling.
BS: Can you marry all of them Steve? No. You. Can’t. You have to
marry somebody of the opposite sex they have to be over the age of 18
you cannot marry somebody of family and you can only marry one at a
time. We all have the same rules and regulations Steve, that’s where
it stands. You lose the argument and you’re going to lose at life my
friend with that kind of an attitude because your particular kind
can’t reproduce! Get him off the line.

"I don't know of much in life where truly the way one phrases the question gives you a different response."
We have magically determined that Noam Chomsky has spent exactly eighty per cent of his career, both within and outside his duties at MIT, demonstrating how the way one phrases the question gives you different responses.

Fuck the 90s, we like that period in the late 80s and early 90s when the hippies kind of suddenly remembered being hippies and there was a nascent liberal consciousness and a resurgent alternative culture. And the music was better.

9/11 Psychosis is my bet.
Dear friend of mine, calm and kind and sensible in all regards, and a mushy centrist of no particular political involvement before then, became a raving wingnut afterwards. Well, not on all issues but at least turned all pro-war and that angle.
He had better excuse than most of these assholes, his sister lived not far from ground zero and he spent that day/night in an agonizing effort to find her and get her out to his house in New Jersey. But I was and remain baffled by how much the event changed him.
I dunno this Sussman person and he may be in it just for the bux and wingnut welfare and all that. But it happens.

Here's the deal. Sussman was ALWAYS a wingnut. I've talked to people who worked with him while a weatherman. What is interesting to me is just how powerful the "mild mannered TV weatherman" meme is.
It is so powerful that people don't believe that he actually says this stuff.
And of course when you are giving the weather there isn't a lot of room for political opinion. But he is now!
He is a global warming denier.
He is using this credentials as a "beloved" weatherman to put out a book to challenge Al Gore. Of course the oil companies will buy carton loads of them and put it on the best seller list. Wingnuts are always paid off.

On May 23, 2006, Bauer was injured in a single-engine airplane crash shortly after taking off from a small airfield in Blacksburg, South Carolina.[5] Bauer, who was the pilot of the Mooney M20E single-prop airplane, and his passenger escaped the wreckage with minor injuries before the plane caught fire. Bauer had surgery for his shattered left heel. That same plane had an oil leak on April 28th.
Bauer faced two primary challenges for re-election, and a general election in 2006.
The first challenge was launched by Mike Campbell, son of legendary former Governor Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. (R). Bauer also faced Dr. Henry Jordan, founder of the South Carolina branch of the Christian Coalition. During the primaries, Bauer portrayed himself as the underdog in this three-way race, despite being an incumbent. His opponents outspent him 3 to 1 in the campaigns.
In the course of the campaign, Campbell received the endorsements of former President George H.W. Bush, a friend of his well-respected father, and First Lady Jenny Sanford, the wife of Governor Mark Sanford.
The primary of June 13, 2006, ended with Mike Campbell receiving 47 percent of the vote, Andre Bauer 37%, and Henry Jordan 18%. As Campbell did not win a majority, he faced Bauer in a runoff election on June 27 for the Republican nomination. Bauer won the runoff with slightly over 51 percent of vote.
He then narrowly defeated Democrat Robert A. Barber, Jr., a former state representative, attorney and lobbyist in the General Election. Bauer received 543,414 votes (50.08%), while Barber received 540,306 votes (49.79%).

---------------
Xan, lots of people make this comment about wingnuts. I think it is because they don't want to believe someone could really believe the horrible things they are saying.
And that is because many of us want to believe the best of people. But I've come to realize that when it comes to public wingnuts it doesn't matter if they don't believe it at home when they aren't on the air. They say it.
It might make us feel better to hope it is an act, but the damage is being done.
Radio "entertainment" is very powerful. The ability to have a 24/7 platform to push your ideas is not something to ignore. Rush Hannity and the right wing cable talkers shape the debate.
Look at all the Right wing politicians that don't want to offend Rush. Now THAT is power.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. -- More than three years after the South Carolina lieutenant governor's near-fatal plane crash, the Federal Aviation Administration has fined the company that rebuilt his plane's engine.
Lt. Governor Andre Bauer was flying with another pilot in May 2006 when the plane went down in Cherokee County. Both survived with serious injuries.
Just recently, FAA investigators concluded that in four cases, bolts had been improperly installed on the engine that was put in Bauer's plane.
The company, America's Aircraft engines out of Tulsa, Oklahoma denies the charges.
The FAA fined the company $700. They have the right to appeal the federal complaint.

SAN DIEGO — The total number of people who have died of swine flu in California is up to 55, an increase of 23 over the past week, state health officials said Thursday as they warned of more serious cases on the way.
"We expect to continue to see more cases of swine flu, more serious cases and, unfortunately, more deaths," said Ken August, spokesman for the California Department of Public Health.
Though health officials expected the spread of swine flu to slow in the hot summer months, as influenza viruses often do, the virus hasn't gone away, August said.
"While the majority of cases have been mild so far, public health officials remain very concerned that the virus could evolve into a more serious strain of influenza," he said.
In San Diego County, health officials said Thursday that two more people with underlying health problems died of swine flu. The latest victims there were a 57-year-old man who died on Monday and a 25-year-old man who died Wednesday.
No other details were released. The latest deaths bring the county's death toll to 9.
Swine flu symptoms are like a typical flu, which causes infected people to experience fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

This is a better idea for some people than others. From a couple of days ago NPS Morning Report:
Rangers, Teton interagency fire personnel and emergency medical personnel rescued a father and son on the night of July 10th after they became separated from their small boat and stranded on a logjam in the swift-flowing Snake River. Forty-year-old [x] and his 15-year-old son were floating down the river in a petite, swimming pool-style inflatable raft when it partially deflated, spilling them into the water....A total of 21 park personnel and Teton interagency firefighters responded to this incident. Investigators determined what had happened.
[x] and his son had launched their inflatable dinghy ... intended to float all the way to the Wilson Bridge, about 25 river miles away. A river guide for a park concessionaire saw the pair getting ready to launch and questioned their preparedness. The guide noticed that the two did not have any oars or paddles and cautioned them that they needed something to help them navigate their small craft. [x] then picked up two sticks to serve as makeshift paddles for his float trip. Besides lacking oars, the [x]s did not have life jackets with them. They floated several miles downstream without incident until the side of their inflatable dinghy got punctured, leaving only the floor chamber inflated....
[x] was trapped in a tangle of branches on a submerged tree and pinned underwater. River users call this river debris a “strainer.” Strainers are a particularly risky hazard for boaters because they can trap people against the branches and cause them to become submerged in the current.
names removed to prevent further mortification. He got tickets for failure to get a river permit and failure to use life jackets. Oh, after getting out of the "strainer" he used his cell phone to call his wife to get help.

Mitt Romney outpacing Sarah Palin in fund-raising race [BARF!]
Amazing filthy rich Socialists like Slick Willard has money falling from the sky.
it is what it is...Mitt got the shaft last time due to Huckabee and others....infact, the whole primary system was rigged to give us McCain....
Let's face it...Willard and his Massachusetts Health Plan failed.
Let's face it. How many hit pieces are the RINOs and Dems running against Willard, anyway?
lets face it...Mitt would be very strong against a idiot like bama.....at least Mitt knows economics and has business ties....
Let's face it. Sarah is a genuine "citizen-politician" of the type (though not gender) the framers intended.
Let's face it. Romney is an elitist. Save him for SecTreas or somesuch.
