Repost from dead thread...
Oh, and the big pharmaceutical companies have pretty much given up on developing new antibiotics, because patients only take them for two weeks or so, rather than for the rest of their lives. Not enough profit, doncha know. (Fuckers)
New antibiotic development is only being done in academic labs and small biotech companies. Infectious disease docs are very worried.

Feh. As it stands they don't get seated at all. It's about giving Florida some participation, not about giving one candidate anything over the other.
Florida screwed the pooch on having a say in the presidential nominee. If they're lucky they'll have some delegates to participate in the other things, like party platform.

Our health care is a world wide sick fucking joke.
Por ejemplo, last night I went to pick up my diabetes meds.
When I got to the drug store the pharmacist tells me that I have used up my in store refills and must now do it by mail.
I'm like since when? Nobody told me. I've been taking this medicine for more than 2 years on this plan and it's always been all right.
Apparently when I rejoined the this PPO one of the new features was that drugs used for "maintenance" must be refilled by mail.
I called the insurance for an override and that takes 24 hours so the pharmacist gave me 6 pills to tide me over.
I gotta say, I'm liking the Orange Satan's idea. Cut the total number of Florida delegates in half (for punishment) and split them 50-50 (for being stupid).

I don't get the logic here. Floridians are only 1/2 people? Either they're entitled to fair representation based on delegation size, or they're not. Splitting the baby doesn't have any rationale I can see, other than ending the discussion.

Gromit, is the problem greater with bacterial of viral infection? Is the same dynamic that you describe at work with viruses? And which is more potentially dangerous?
Both are bad, but the problems seems more acute with bacteria. Different dynamic with viruses, because viruses have genomes with basically a fixed complement of genes. So they can mutate (like flu), but not pick up a whole bunch of new genes, as for antibiotic resistance.
(When HIV becomes resistant to drugs, it's by mutations in existing genes, not through acquiring new genes).
Funny you mentioned alcohol. I don't use those hand sanitizers anymore. I just use pure rubbing alcohol in a small bottle. Is this a waste?
Nope, makes perfect sense. Purell is pretty much just rubbing alcohol in a gel form.

They have to get revotes done some how.
I have always been opposed to letting the delegates stand as they are. That punishes the voters in all the other states who didn't cut in line.
I am opposed to no representation. That punishes the voters in the two states for the boneheaded leaders.
The only solution is a revote.

Of course, development of new drugs has always come principally from government-funded programs. The idea that the pharmaceutical companies doing it is another right-wing lie to make you think commercial medicine is better than socialized medicine.

One of Chomsky's favorite points is that that of course goes across the board. The Air Force does all the development and expensive, risky testing, then it gives what is basically its work over to Lockheed which contracts to make a plane the Air Force contracts to pay for.
Honey Bear, I just got the same letter from my scrip carrier, and I use a lot of maintenance meds, two of which are quite pricey. I was told that if I didn't use mail order (and this company's service sucks, btw--I've tried it before), I would have to pay double what I'm paying now for my meds.

Wow, no Atrios, but we're still getting the rapid posting!
Seriously, the whole federal research funding situation is horrendous. I had a big NIH grant ($300k/yr for ten years) to develop antiviral technologies. Developed agents against HIV, hepatitis B, and SARS virus. Quit my previous administrative job to devote more time to the project, and then they cut off funding.
I'm lucky to still have one NIH grant (down from 3) for a very fundamental biochemistry project. But the feds have not been effective in investing in public health and bioweapons defense. Heck of a job, Georgie.
