Thanks for the answer. I, of course, realized he didn't get to carry out everything he would have liked. Besides classic trolls, we have a few resident long-winded bores who believe that the rest of us have never been exposed to some trite, shallow, bombastic rant they just heard on the radio or read in Reader's Digest or saw in a vision, and feel compelled to share with the rest of us. These people lack any possible sense of context or audience; they are incapable of noticing that the bulk of our commenting community has been exposed to the world for a while now and is not interested in any comment that starts "there is one simple answer to this the rest of you aren't getting." It does you no good to respond to this type either; they'll just re-write the same comment again, at the same length, saying the same thing, until you "get it." I think he means the voters obama wants to disenfranchise as get back for not voting for him. That would be the two states that have nore voters than the other early primary states combined. That would be the states everybody [with a brain] knows will be seated despite obama's willingness to cancel their votes.

Gravatarevening bats

what's shakin'?

GravatarActually, JFK was not considered to be a particularly good president at the time. He was cautious on pushing civil rights, and he was a pretty dedicated cold warrior.

However, he kept cool head and was sane during the missile crisis - had Junior been in office at the time, all our asses would be radioactive. And he showed signs of growing in office and leading the country in a new direction, especially on Vietnam.

Like Reagan, his time in office has been obscurred by the legend that grew. In JFK's case it has provided a source of idealism and hope. In Reagan's, it has assisted an assault on the welfare of the country and the world.

Police found a "large quantity" of pornographic movies inside the business, along with a keg of beer, painkillers and two cameras hooked up to a television. Thompson told police he didn't know the teenagers were under 18 or that they were paid for sex. He said pornography found at the business was for "personal use," according to the documents.

My question is this: when JFK was running for president and nobody knew what kind of leader he was, how was he perceived? Just because Obama has a cult of personality around himself doesn't mean much in terms of how he'd end up doing as a president. I'm just wondering what kind of vibe JFK had during his election.

On the other hand he introduced the Civil Rights Act and signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

With the changes he was trying to make -- ending oil depletion allowance and other policies considered "anti-business", he definitely was putting stuff off for the second term and having to nudge along an electorate schooled in the Cold War and wage delicate behind-scenes battles with entrenched power bases in Washington.

I came to politcal consciousness under Kennedy so my idea of a president is one who educates and inspires. I think his daughter may be seeing some of that in Obama when she says he's a candidate like her dad.

On the other side, conservatives and other religious bigots were pushing the hysterics of "the pope will be coming over to take over America!"

As I recall when reading back, the press seemed to like him because he was dynamic and his wife was hot.

GravatarKennedy definitely did some good things, and was indeed growing in office. I just wanted to point out that his reality was a mised bag. His assassination mostly dropped the bad things out of memory.

The space race was wondrous and produced a lot of technological benefits. Keep in mind, however, that it's roots lay in cold war competition, and its purpose was at least as much military as scientific.

Satellite could plummet to Earth

No details of the satellite were given
A "large" US spy satellite has gone out of control and is expected to crash to Earth some time in late February or March, government sources say.

Officials speaking on condition of anonymity said the satellite had lost power and propulsion, and could contain hazardous materials.

The White House said it was monitoring the situation.

For Hillary's camp to talk about Florida as if it's being conducted under the same conditions as the other primaries is just stupid.

I really don't have a dog in this fight, but in tactical terms, this has been a rotten week for the Clinton campaign. They've just set themselves up for being included in a 'repudiate Bush and everything that preceded it' message.

This remains a delegate fight, with 1,681 delegates at stake on February 5th, and 2,025 needed to secure the nomination -- and we are ahead in that fight."

Culture of TrÜth"

Like hell I would. That wouldn't stop a creep like you from running around posting your trash. And now I'll correct your record on obama and edwards: They are both on the ballot in FL

Even more:
obama has broken his pledge not to advertise or campaign in FL.

Obama also appeared to violate a pledge he and the other leading candidates took by holding a brief news conference outside the fundraiser. That was less than a day after the pledge took effect Saturday, and Obama is the first Democratic presidential candidate to visit Florida since then.

Obama and others have pledged not to campaign in Florida until the Jan. 29 primary except for fundraising, which is what he was doing in Tampa.

But after the fundraiser at the Hyde Park home of Tom and Linda Scarritt, Obama crossed the street to take half a dozen questions from reporters waiting there.
http://www2.tbo.com/content/2007.../?news- breaking

another interesting bit:
"TAMPA - Barack Obama hinted during a Tampa fundraiser Sunday that if he's the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, he'll seat a Florida delegation at the party's national convention, despite national party sanctions prohibiting it."

Not an obama quote. And of course I didn't say it was.

Sure he talks reform and I'm all for his visions, but that 'say anything' meme is repeating abundantly lately - out of the mouth of Chris Matthews, Howard Fineman, Wolf Blitzer, Sean Hannity, Tim Russert, numerous Obama surrogates, etc. and I recognize that as the Mighty Wurlitzer at work, which unfortunately is not nonsense, respectfully.

The cinematography in Blair Shit Project made Clerks look like Apocalypse Now.

Along those lines, dkos has been a rather shameful place in the last few weeks.

GravatarRight, the year 1941, it didn't hit me...Citizen Kane! Geez...

Sorry about that.

I'm a woman, but the deliberately weepy, romantic crap has almost always annoyed me.

Didn't like Dirty Dancing, either.

GravatarJust me but I liked:

Never Cry Wolf
Blue Thunder
Flashdance
Return of the Jedi
The Right Stuff
Heart Like a Wheel
Rueben Rueben
Cross Creek
and
Trading Places
Better than Terms of Endearment

GravatarHmm..., namecalling is evidence of a child-like frustration with life.

That's the one. Your sin is forgiven, my child.

GravatarThe Right Stuff is my favorite movie.

Here's my top five:

1. The Right Stuff
2. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
3. The Third Man
4. Salesman (Maysles doc)
5. The General

Gravatarbrilliance from tnr:

White Men

One very important exit poll result, which I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about in the days to come: Obama tied Hillary among white men.
http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/t.../white- men.aspx

Don't know what exit poll he is talking about and he doesn't tell us. But anyway there were 3 people in the race. Guess which one got more white males than obama or Hillary. At least according to cnn:

GravatarSorry, I liked that Officer & A Gentleman was about working class people. As a Cinderella story, it's a lot better than Pretty Woman.

GravatarDWD - helluva list. Thumbs up

GravatarMarlon Brando:

nutroot hippie Father Figure--all the right "progressive" causes

Gravatar2. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

I fucking LOVE that movie.

My brother and I saw it in the theater when we were kids.

We laughed ourselves silly.

Gravatar2001. For Special Effects.
shawk | 01.26.08 - 11:21 pm | #

Yup. Hell, in 1964 My Fair Lady won Best Picture (Strangelove was out that year).

My Fair Lady is entertaining, but it didn't have the impact Strangelove did (and still does).

Kind of like Valley and Kane. Valley is a wonderful film, but Kane is much more influential.

GravatarWe could use a real President too... luckily, a year from now, we'll probably have one.

Gravatar
5. The General

Buster Keaton, or the Boorman movie?

GravatarSay what you want about Bill, but after leaving office he could have gone off and make kazillions of dollars.

Instead he's continued with his public service.

The was a story in the WSJ about Bill cashing out his $20Million in profits in some fund he has been assisting because its deals with Dubai etc. might be a problem on the campaign.

Of course, it's nothing compared to Cheney retaining his Halbiburton stock while VP, but ...

GravatarOne of the greatest TV moments ever.

In the top ten greatest tv moments, I think The West Wing might have a majority. Unfunded mandate is two words, not one big one.

Gravatarbrilliance from tnr:

The cartoonlike desire to turn everything into a dualistic simple thing pisses me off. It's not that simple, ever, and deciding it is and then going out to find an anecdote to support that plot is stupid.

Salesman is an interesting choice...an excellent film.

GravatarCan u imagine that dolt writing a book? All by hisself?

Don't worry, some sucker will write one for him and it will instantly end up in the remainder bins.

GravatarI'd have to have 20 or 30 top five lists depending on the genre or my mood

Gravatar"Comment by Lubyanka blocked. [unkill][show comment]"

Another troll shows up, waving its tiny, useless penis, and runs headfirst into killfile, knocking itself even stupider than it was to begin with.

Man, that NEVER gets old!

GravatarThe General is certainly funny, perhaps my hardest-laughed-at out of my seat etc.

Coulda been the dope though.

Gravatar5. The General
Buster Keaton, or the Boorman movie?
Richard

I did not want to know that about you.

GravatarRight Stuff is actually a pale imitation of Chuck Yeager's autobiography, which is truly fucked up. Just read it the other day. Really great book. His wife Glennis writes quite a bit in it. Fascinating woman.

GravatarWalter,

That list was culled from the IMDB list of nominated movies for '83. (But thanks anyway)

GravatarThe Right Stuff is my favorite movie.

WalterNeff, dyscalculiac | 01.26.08 - 11:24 pm | #

Really?

I thought it was overlong and tedious, but there's no arguing taste, as the Romans used to say.

2001 is more my speed as far as spacefaring movies go.

Gravatar..but the deliberately weepy, romantic crap has almost always annoyed me.
---amen, buckeye. and i've never once read a "romance" novel. when i have a romance i enjoy the heck out of it and when i don't i don't want to read about some imaginary romance.

GravatarThank you for all the advice. I have to say, it used to be that I liked the Clintons, but now I feel like turning off the TV whenever I see one of them. I'll vote for Hill if she wins, but I hope I can regain some enthusiasm. I thought Obama said it well when he called that kind of politics "depressing".

GravatarYup. Hell, in 1964 My Fair Lady won Best Picture

That's one of my favorite movies. And is probably the first grown up movie premiere I ever went to.

I was six.

(Walter Neff will probably remember, but back in the 60's, when big films opened it was a big deal, with programs and everything)

GravatarSpeaking of Oscars - Kevin O'Connell was nominated again this year. His mother recently died: she won't get to see him win.

19 noms - no wins. This year is his 20th nom. Sound/Sound Editing

GravatarSalesman
WalterNeff, dyscalculiac

The soul of the GOP is contained within that film.

GravatarThere are a lot of classic movies I've somehow missed thru the years.

Some of my favorite movies:
The Wizard of Oz
Airplane
Young Frankenstein
The Music Man
Galaxy Quest

Yeah, slanted toward the comic stuff.

Pick one up, a recent one. You might be surprised by what they have become. Mostly soft porn for women.

Gravatar'night, bats.

GravatarA Soldier of Orange
Black Book

...two movies about twenty-five years apart but a perfect "double-feature."

GravatarPlease don't quote the trolls.

It defeats the purpose of killfile and makes their tiny, useless penises all tingly like.

Used as a pawn by warring parents.

Small wonder things turned out the way they did for him.

GravatarHard to really place them in any order, but here are a few of my favorites...

Paths of Glory
Dr. Strangelove
Seven Days in May
the Manchurian Candidate
the Thin Red Line (1998 version)
Kiss Me Deadly
Bullit
The Sweet Smell of Success
Kiss Me Deadly
the Godfather I and II
Apocalypse Now
Dark City

Gravatar2. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

From Durante "kicking the bucket" to Merman slipping on a banana peel, that is a funny, funny film.

GravatarAnother troll shows up, waving its tiny, useless penis, and runs headfirst into killfile, knocking itself even stupider than it was to begin with.

GravatarChuck Yeager fell 50,000 feet in 51 seconds in the Bell X-1A over the Mojave Desert. He knew he was going to die. The entire plane was designed without an ejection seat. If the liquid oxygen tanks caught fire, he could not bail out. The guy was fucking crazy, but lived.

Gravatarhat poll doesn't tell us who got the white male vote, hadenough.

I think it went for both Obama and Edwards.

Obama did quite well with them, which is good news.

GravatarI suppose... posting a list of my DVD and CD would make for an interesting blog post.

GravatarIt's the script. The "liberal media" has a script. And it sure looks like race is what it is. And if that doesn't work they'll through in gender. In every dem contest record numbers have come out to vote. Not mentioned a whole lot. The repubs are barely a party any more. Everybody hates them. Not mentioned a whole lot.

One retired editor told me that the writers are reluctant to work very hard. I didn't take her seriously but now I think she may be right. Certain themes are so easy to write about, or look like that at least (in fact, race and gender are really hard to write about, even after decades of study). So they go with those. Then you don't have to learn about the geeky differences in the health care policy proposals.

GravatarThe Right Stuff: I saw Conti conduct his Oscar-winning score with the Seattle Symphony

Mad World - I took a film class from Kramer: great storyteller (I'm too lazy to spell ranconteur).

GravatarIn 1940, Senator Harry Truman faced a primary challenger who was more or less backed by FDR (it was, as usual w/Roosevelt, hard to say for sure)... and in the midst of that, the Republicans who controlled his home county chose that particular time to foreclose the mortgage on his mother's farm, forcing her and his sister off the family land... so when people get all "depressed" about politics, maybe they ought to just suck it up and not whine, because it has always been, it will always be, a nasty business.

Not one of the greatest but one of the strangest, and upsetting, moments in TV history I ever witnessed was a mid-1980s show with Gary Collins, (this only rememberized because he was just sentenced for DUI), his famous co-host?, and a doctor demonstrating why the procedure of blood donation was safe despite the AIDS outbreak (then at its peak). The Dr. tried to show how a syringe needle was methodically changed from patient to patient- and then inadvertently used same needle directly from co-host’s arm to draw from Collins’ arm ... dr. immediately realized mistake and went chalk white followed by co-host then Collins. it was unbelievably uncomfortable moment all around … the faces of uncomprehending questioning and some type of attempt at an unknowing reassurance to each other – yikes
