The GOP knows it's over. The Republicans are going to suffer huge losses on November 4th. And, they deserve it. That party has destroyed the country.
But, the Republicans have their priorities. They're already talking about rebuilding their party. It's going to take years to rebuild the country after what Bush and his GOP wrecking crew did...
What a crap paper this has become.

Ballots picked up, then disappear
The disappearance of some absentee ballots, picked up under unusual circumstances, has raised some serious questions.
...
Hernandez said he worries his ballot was stolen or destroyed. He and two other voters told The Miami Herald that the man was dispatched by a woman caller who also said she worked for Martinez. But the phone number cited by the voters traces back to a consultant working for Martinez's rival, Republican congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart.

On the tape, it sounds about 50-50 to me, Marcellina, but it's noticeable.
She had the first redneck with her and the kids were decked out in Blues sweaters.
The self-described "hockey mom" got more cheers than boos on Friday night before the Blues played the Los Angeles Kings. Some in the near-capacity crowd at the Scottrade Center booed, but they were all but drowned out by loud cheers for the Alaska governor and running mate of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
Just minutes into the game, Blues enforcer Cam Janssen and Kings tough guy Sean O'Donnell dropped the gloves and began to fight near center ice. By then, Palin was in a luxury box with Blues principal owner Dave Checketts.
Palin watched the fight intently, clapping as the fight got more intense. By the time referees separated the combatants, Palin was waving an oversized foam Blues finger.
Christ almighty. From that endorsement of Coleman (don't live in MN, obviously, but I was curious about their rationale for Teh Hollow Man)
Coleman didn't begin his Senate service as an agent of bipartisanship. But that's the note on which he wound up his six-year term and which he has sounded repeatedly in his reelection campaign. We like the trend we've seen and believe Coleman is capable of taking it further.
As soon as the political winds shifted, Norm Coleman shifted with them. And we think that's a sign of character.
One of the Denver papers endorsed Obama, and published a dissenting opinion from an op/ed board member. The hump clanged on for three hundred words about "experience counts in difficult times", but didn't name one example of McCain's "experience" leading to sound judgement on an actual problem or issue.

The score:
For McCain--Three middle fingers, a bunch of thumbs down, one idiot in army fatigues driving a government car yelled "He's a terrorist!" about four or five shouts of "McCain!"
For Obama--More horn honks, thumbs up, shouts of "Go, Obama!!" bright smiles and waves, etc. etc. than we could count--hundreds of them. One woman honked and waved and yelled "I'm from Pennsylvania!,"
Yeah, it felt good!

He's not been asked to "override" the SCOTUS. SCOTUS said, in essence, that the plaintiff in the case (the Republican party) would not be able to prove standing, because DOJ enforces the law in question.
So Mukasey can choose to file suit, but it would still have to be litigated through Federal Court to the SCOTUS.

Hockey mom. Hrmph. High School Hockey ain't cheap. From the Kennebec Journal:
Hall-Dale, Maranacook and Winthrop high schools will field a cooperative hockey team that will compete in Class A this season.
The booster organizations will help raise money for ice time, security and trainer fees, which could cost as much as $15,000 a season, Johnson said.
That's with the school picking up the coaching, travel, and administration. That's not including individual athlete's equipment, which runs to around $700 to a grand.

the other:

As I recall, Atrios has been saying for a while that 40-45% or so is basically McCain's destiny, and he won't crack that ceiling.
Evidently, the latest Rassmussen poll has some confirmation of that point of view:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonl.../850/936/
641818
Obama is closing the deal:
However, while the overall levels of support have remained stable, voters have become more certain of their intent. Today, the percentage who say they could still change their mind is down to single digits. Forty-eight percent (48%) are now certain they will vote for Obama while 40% say the same about McCain. Nine percent (9%) lean one way or the other but could change their mind. The remaining three percent (3%) are either committed to a third party candidate or remain undecided.
Thirty days ago, while Obama enjoyed a five-point lead overall, just 41% of voters were certain they would vote for him. At that time, 39% said the same about McCain.
This is STUNNING. In the last month, the proportion of people who commit to voting for Obama has risen by 7 points. While with Mccain it's only risen 1 point. Essentially Mccain is retaining that hard 40% that represents his base, while Obama is attracting all the persuadables.

Parents have to come up w/ $15K in addition to the school's expense (see the story) to field a team, and provide equipment for their kids (skates, pads, etc.). "Le Hotel de Londres Eiffel sits in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, in a little neighborhood with more inviting restaurants than could be sampled in our short stay. It was almost 10 pm, but we were hungry, and settled on the restaurant next door Chez Agnes --the name of the proprietor, cook, waitress, and dishwasher. There was only one other table occupied in the small establishment, imbued with the requisite amount of cigarette smoke, plus a small dog, evidently the restaurant mascot. Morgan took to the dog right away. Agnes and her patrons were suitably impressed by Morgan's French skills, and rather appreciative of the fact that an American girl could speak French. I sat mute, smiling occasionally while the conversation swirled around me and the dog napped at my heels."

I did the same on the Confluence, which seems to be one of the main PUMA blogs, and was banned in 30 seconds. In that case, I posted a story about McCain's people pushing the Ashley Todd hoax on the press. My post appeared and then disappeared in no time flat.

Well...
we're having some awesome wind gusts around here and someone's grill broke loose from their porch and slammed into a neighbor's car.
Things were getting a little intense, so I called the local constablary to intervene. I was too busy watching for bloodshed that I didn't notice that several attachments had also flown around the neighborhood and I stepped on a spatula in my bedroom slippers. Superficial cut, but blood everywhere. The neighbors quit screaming at each other to try to help me, and when the po-po showed up, he assumed that I had been attacked.
This has been a interesting day off.

A Letter From Palin America 2012
i have bought some time by promising the government orthodoxy police that i will reconsider my episcopalian heresy and come over to the true baptists faith. i am sitting near my kitchen window so that the neighbors can see me eat cheetoes and miracle whip. i hope now they don't suspect the supplies of whole grain cereals and tofu that are hidden under a floorboard
god knows what i'll do when the granola runs out
i think i have purged my speech of all fatal clues like using the words 'ironic', 'holistic', and 'shallots'. my supervisor even complimented me yesterday on how 'appropriate' my tie was. (sob!) i don't know how i can go on like this...
it is too dangerous right now to reach out to others like myself - i haven't even used up my Compulsory Fossil Fuel allowance yet. i am writing a diary of the past four years which i will try to hide in the Monument To Real America someday, but until then...
its been not a bad autumn in the UK, granted we have had strong winds and some days of heavy rain but we've had more sun than we had during the entire summer

In a déjà vu moment from Campaign 2006, President George W. Bush again is asking his Attorney General to launch an investigation into the registration of hundreds of thousands of new voters, many of whom are expected to vote Democratic.
Bush forwarded to Attorney General Michael Mukasey a Republican request that he intervene in the battleground state of Ohio to force 200,000 new voters to either verify the information on their registration forms or cast provisional ballots, which are often thrown out after the voter leaves the polling place.
Not content having stolen two elections, chimpslime wants to try to make it three.

ES&S Touch-Screen Votes Now Flipping in TX Too! Obama/DNC Attorneys Still AWOL!
State After State, ES&S iVotronics Are Flipping Democratic Votes to Republican!
What You Can Do About It, And Where the Hell Are Those 'Thousands' of Obama/DNC Attorneys?...
This is just getting worse and worse. Now it's happening in Texas. (And in MO, if you read to the end of the article). And the vaunted "thousands of attorneys" from the Obama campaign and the DNC are still nowhere to be found.
With every incident so far reported of touch-screen vote-flipping during early voting in this year's general election --- from county to county in WV and in Nashville, TN) --- it's been the ES&S iVotronic touch-screen machine that has failed, flipping votes from one candidate to another not chosen by the voter. In most every instances [see update below], it's been an attempted Democratic vote, flipped to a Republican, or another party. These are the same machines that lost 18,000 votes in Democratic-leaning Sarasota County in the 2006 U.S. House Race for Katherine Harris' old seat. The Democrat, Christine Jennings, was declared the loser to Republican Vern Buchanan (whose own wife had trouble voting for him that day), by just 369 votes. Several academic studies, and even the GAO, have been unable to rule out either tampering or hardware/software error for the disappeared 18,000 votes.
As we wrote earlier this week, after there was finally one report of a vote flipping from Democratic to Republican in TN (a very rare instance, btw), these machines need to be taken out of service now, impounded and quarantined immediately, and every voter needs to be given a paper ballot where these machines are currently being used. Voters who have such problems need to inform other voters waiting in line which machine should not be used (and we offer other tips below, as well).
[Update: The rare vote-flip from Republican to Democratic now seems to have been a hoax carried out by local Republicans, according to a TN election integrity activist who did some digging and reporting. Details here...]
The latest reports today of ES&S vote-flipping come from Palo Pinto County, TX, where two voters --- one of them an alternate election judge and office manager of the Palo Pinto County Democratic Headquarters --- saw straight-ticket Democratic votes flipped to straight-ticket Republican votes. Two times for the first person, and three times for the alternate election judge!
The report is a doozy...
At least two Palo Pinto County residents say they experienced early voting problems when the touch-screen voting machines they used kept switching their straight-party vote from Democratic to Republican.
"When I cast an early vote [Wednesday] at Palo Pinto County Courthouse, my vote was switched from Democrat to Republican right in front of my face - twice!" reported Lona Jones, a Precinct 1 county resident.
I think you have too. It's the only way to get through it. I'm planning on mainlining S until I'm satisfied.

Thinking she had pushed the wrong button the first time the machine "came up Republican," Jones said she repeated her intended straight-party vote.
"The second time I was sure to just touch the Democratic button," she said, further reporting that the machine responded to her selection, "'Do you want to change your Republican straight ticket vote to a Democratic vote?' I pressed, 'Yes,' then it came back up and it was a total Republican ticket again." We've cautioned many times here at The BRAD BLOG, of the dangers of voting straight-party tickets, particularly in TX, where election officials have ">reportedly been giving disinformation to voters, but everywhere else that they allow it as well. Vote for each candidate, NOT straight-party! But whether it's a straight-party vote or not, no voter should ever cast a vote on a touch-screen machine unless they are forced to. There is absolutely no way that any vote ever cast on a touch-screen machine --- with or without a so-called paper trail --- can ever be shown as having been recorded accurately. None. Zero. Scientifically impossible. Or if it isn't a scientific impossibility, our many months of asking for evidence, from anyone, of such a vote having been accurately recorded by a touch-screen/DRE has yielded precisely no such evidence. And we've asked voting machine companies, election officials, and so-called "election experts" time and again, and none have been able to offer anysuch evidence. Ever. So what do you do about it when your vote flips? Other than demanding a paper ballot, and demanding these machines be confiscated and quarantined immediately? The article goes on to notes a very good point...
"One of the ladies told me, 'These machines don't work well' and, 'These machines give us problems.' I told her I not only didn't want to use that machine, [indicating the problematic first machine], I didn't want anyone using that machine."
Yesterday, VelvetRevolution.us' election integrity expert Emily Levy suggested that when this problem occurs, voters should first tell officials, and ask them to remove the machine from service. 0000000000000Then...Alert everyone else in line waiting to vote which machine caused the problem, and warn everyone else not to use it!
These are among the steps she recommends, with which I strongly concur:
Call poll supervisors to observe the problem
Fill out a problem report
Refuse to vote on that machine
Request that the machine be taken out of service
Get a serial number of the machine if possible (may be unlikely in many cases)
Tell other voters not to vote on that machine
Call county/town election office
Call local reporters
Call voter problem hotlines (eg. 866-MYVOTE1 and 866-OUR-VOTE)
Contact bloggers and Election Integrity websites.
Raise holy hell.
[Disclosure: The BRAD BLOG is a co-founder of VR.]
Also, before you go to vote, bring a video camera (a cell phone video camera will do), to document the vote-flipping

They forgot: Roe v Wade is protected for another 8 to 16 years and any chance to overturn it is lost to history. Wingnuts who actually want to decrease abortions, as opposed to sending women to back alleys are forced to do things that actually decrease abortions: educate girls, provide free, safe, and effective birth control, teach real sex education, enforce child support laws, provide medical care, day care, and parental leave.

Believers in Barack - Apparently, Obama-love is blind.
National Review Online ^ | Thomas Sowell
Telling a friend that the love of his life is a phony and dangerous is not likely to get him to change his mind. But it may cost you a friend.
It is much the same story with true believers in Barack Obama. They have made up their minds and not only don’t want to be confused by the facts, they resent being told the facts.
An e-mail from a reader mentioned trying to tell his sister why he was voting against Obama but, when he tried to argue some facts, she cut him short: “You don’t like him and I do!” she said. End of discussion.
When one thinks of all the men who have put their lives on the line in battle to defend and preserve this country, it is especially painful to think that there are people living in the safety and comfort of civilian life who cannot be bothered to find out the facts about candidates before voting to put the fate of this nation, and of generations yet to come, in the hands of someone chosen because they like his words or style.
You're jealous, Sowell, because nobody likes your words or style or even yourself.

John Pilger addresses Columbia University in New York
On 14 April 2006, the Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia University in New York brought together John Pilger, Seymour Hersh, Robert Fisk and Charles Glass for a discussion entitled 'Breaking the Silence: War, lies and empire'.
Tne following is a transcript of John Pilger's address - 'War by Media':
"During the Cold War, a group of Russian journalists toured the United States. On the final day of their visit, they were asked by their hosts for their impressions. “I have to tell you,” said their spokesman, “that we were astonished to find, after reading all the newspapers and watching TV, that all the opinions on all the vital issues were, by and large, the same. To get that result in our country, we imprison people, we tear out their fingernails. Here, you don't have that. What's the secret? How do you do it?”
What is the secret? It's a question now urgently asked of those whose job is to keep the record straight: who in this country have extraordinary constitutional freedom. I refer to journalists, of course, a small group who hold privileged sway over the way we think, even the way we use language...

A few years ago, I got a bad ear infection that really began to bother me around 10:30 on a Friday night. Like an idiot, I went to our local emergency room. V nice hospital in a v nice suburban neighborhood. I knew, the nurse doing triage knew, hell, the six year old sitting next to me waiting for his Pappi to get some care for his chest pains knew, I needed an antibiotic, a decongestant, and a pain killer. Obviously, an old woman with an ear infection is going to get seen after the car accidents and heart attacks. By the time I finally crawled home with drugs at 4:00 am or so, I was promising myself to never go to the emergency room again.

President Obama should affix a signing statement to it, indicating that his interpretation is that the pardons listed above are all null & void.
Obama cannot do that. Bush's pardons are lawful actions taken by a preceding President, so, he can't interfere with them, as he can, for instance, by rescinding executive orders, since those are instructions to the Executive Branch.
That said, what does happen with President pardons, if accepted by the recipients, is that they give up all 5th Amendment rights to protection from self-incrimination in those matters for which they have been pardoned, and that should open up a torrent of investigations by any new head of the DoJ, if Obama could be convinced such were in the country's best interest (which is something I doubt would be very likely).

Yeah, I wonder what it must be like to have to deal with voters who don't concern themselves with facts, and vote because they're terrified by terrorists and gays.

I suspect Obama will take a Lincolnesque approach to the Bush cabal. As the Civil War was ending he was told that Jefferson Davis was headed for Mexico, Lincoln said something to the effect to 'let him go'.
Of course after Lincoln's death Davis was captured, imprisoned and what followed was one of the more bizarre stories in American history.

Libby will be pardoned. Ted Stevens, if he's convicted by then. Probably Richard Scrushy. Maybe Skilling.
I don't see Bush issuing preemptive pardons, inasmuch as they're an admission of culpability if not criminal guilt, and because it's a pretty safe bet that no one will actually ever be indicted. Too much of Congress on both sides of the aisle is wrapped up in Iraq, the Plame thing is essentially a closed book, and I think Bush might actually leave Gonzales twisting in the wind, the way Al has been singing lately.

The death toll from floods sweeping through southwestern Yemen following heavy rains has risen to 49, officials have said.
The floods have been most severe in the provinces of Hadramaut and Mahara.
Officials said that four people were killed by lightning in the southern provinces of Tayez and Lahj, and a mother and son were also killed when lightning struck them in the al-Mahwit region north of the capital Sanaa.
Hadramaut and Mahara were both declared disaster zones on Friday, officials said.
Rescue co-ordinators said that among the victims were seven people who perished in al-Mukalla, the capital of Hadramaut which is located on the shores of the Arabian Sea.

an endurance race - Several hundred people taking part in a run in the Lake District near Keswick have been stranded by flooding and torrential rain.
The runners were taking part in the Original Mountain Marathon (OMM) run when they were overcome by the weather.
Honister Slate Mine manager Mark Weir said he was sheltering 300 of them and some were suffering from hypothermia.
Mountain rescue teams are out on the hills searching for missing runners who may be stranded.
Cumbria Police said competitors spending the night on the mountain were mainly seasoned mountaineers, and were expected to be carrying suitable equipment to cope with adverse weather.
About 12 people have been taking to hospital with hypothermia and minor injuries, said a spokesman for Northwest Ambulance Service.
Oh, I know. It's just that I find it funny to imagine Obama attaching a signing statement to anything he disagrees with, much like I suspect Bush does for everything from Congressional bills to Laura's "honeydew" list.
It seems like something a six year old would do.
Actually, most Presidents have used signing statements--the practice goes back many, many decades.
Bush has distinguished himself by using them in much greater quantity and with much less specificity than in the past, and has used them to uphold his notions of the "unitary executive," which is a wholly new conceit, beginning with Nixon, and expanded during the Reagan years.
Bush, unlike virtually all of his predecessors, has used signing statements to ignore law, rather than to flag items an administration intended the Solicitor General to bring before the Supreme Court.
Obama will use them, guaranteed. Hopefully, not as often, and with more precise legal justification than Bush....
