Democrats favored in electoral map

By LIZ SIDOTI – 1 hour ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — The electoral road to the White House favors Democrats this fall — either Barack Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton — and has Republican John McCain playing defense to thwart a presidential power shift.

A downtrodden economy, the war in Iraq and a public call for change have created an Electoral College outlook and a political environment filled with extraordinary opportunity for the Democrats and enormous challenge for the GOP nominee-in-waiting.

Both parties count on victory in dozens of states that long have voted their way. The competition to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to win is expected to play out primarily in 14 states. All but one saw the greatest action in 2004. The exception is Virginia, a longtime Republican stronghold where Democrats have made inroads

GravatarMinisters and trade bodies have urged motorists not to panic-buy fuel, as some petrol stations across Scotland reported shortages.

The plea came on the eve of a 48-hour strike at Grangemouth, Scotland's only oil refinery, amid a pensions dispute.

UK Business Secretary John Hutton asked members of the public to stick to their normal fuel-buying routine.

However, the petrol retailers' body said most people seemed to be paying attention to the advice.

GravatarThe online weapons dealer who sold one of the guns used in the Virginia Tech shootings visited the campus, a decision the school's spokesman called "terribly offensive."

Dealer Eric Thompson spoke at the school Thursday night as part of a weeklong demonstration in favor of allowing people to carry concealed weapons at colleges.[...]

[...]Thompson pointed to a student's T-shirt that said "Guns Kill." "They certainly do," he said, but added "focusing on guns and focusing on who sold the guns is not going to solve the problem.
"

Clearly. After all, if no-one had sold these two disturbed young men guns sight unseen, they would have just

um

not killed 39 people and wounded another 35.

GravatarOT: George McGovern – the Democrat who lost the 1972 election to Richard Nixon – once argued: ‘To admit the existence of hunger in America is to confess that we have failed in meeting the most sensitive and painful of human needs. To admit the existence of widespread hunger is to cast doubt on the efficacy of our whole system.’

More than three decades later – at a time when well-publicised food riots are rocking Haiti, Bangladesh and Burkina Faso – it is still the case that huge numbers of people in the richest country in the world are not getting enough to eat.

GravatarGood morning.

Hell hath no fury like a woman well-slept.

GravatarTheir situation is highlighted in the Financial Times [registration required] today, following reports that some chain stores are having to ration sales of the cheapest foodstuffs on account of demand from the poor:

The Congressional Budget Office forecast the number of Americans on food stamps would next year reach 28m, the highest number since the programme began more than 40 years ago.

James Weill, president of the Food Research and Action Center, said the actual number was likely to be much higher because the number of claimants had already reached 27.7m in January, an increase of more than 1.3m in the past year. The measure does not count all those in trouble as only about 65 per cent of those eligible for food stamps seek help.

The impact will be felt most acutely by the 35m Americans - 10.9 per cent of all households - who already struggle to put enough food on the table each year. About 11m of these are thought to have "very low food security", meaning someone in their home went hungry for lack of money to buy food, according to government data from 2006.

This state of affairs is the upshot of the neoliberalism practised by successive administrations – Republican and Democrat alike - since the Reagan era, which have seen the disparities between rich and poor reach their highest levels since 1929.

That was the era of Herbert Hoover, who famously campaigned on the slogan ‘a chicken in every pot’, before delivering a level of starvation thankfully never seen before or since.

GravatarThe idiocy of Clift's column began with the concept that Clinton was going to be able to pull out the nomination from under Obama's feet.

GravatarClinton's recent shenanigans have stiffened my resolve against her. I was yelling at my SO yesterday that I'd vote for Nader or John Hagelin before her, if she's on the ticket, and I meant it.
I don't think HRC is a bad person, not worth my vote. And while his tactical role is pretty bad, I'll always appreciate Bill Clinton's talents as a politician. But I would act out to repudiate the Mark Penn/Terry McAuliffe/Bob Shrum axis of the democratic world who keep coughing up these electoral phlegm balls.

GravatarWhat do the two Democrat contenders this time round have to say on the issue? Well, if this website is anything to go by, Clinton has a better paper position than Obama, and is pledging to end child hunger by 2012.

Good, in as far as it goes. But after the HillaryCare U-turn of 1993, it’s difficult to take her promises seriously. And presumably she will be happy enough leaving the adults to starve.

McGovern was right; widespread hunger does call into question the efficacy of the capitalist system. America deserves a political leadership that at least takes the issue seriously.

GravatarAn oil pipeline south of Baghdad has been blown up, wounding at least eight security guards, Iraqi police say.

The blast, near the town of Iskandiriya, caused a large fire and disrupted the flow of crude oil to refineries in the south of Iraq.

The pipeline carries fuel south from Baghdad's Doura oil refinery.

It was the second time in the past year the pipeline had been hit and the latest in a series of attacks on Iraqi oil refineries, blamed on insurgents.

Pumping from the refinery was stopped because of the explosion, and production was likely to be affected, according to an official speaking anonymously.

A police officer, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said "the bombing has caused a huge fire".

The military prosecutors declined to comment on the claims about Mr. Hamdan’s condition. As is common at Guantánamo, their legal filings were not made public before the scheduled court date. But defense filings released by Mr. Hamdan’s lawyers recited some prosecution arguments.

The prosecutors argued that the way that Mr. Hamdan was being held did not constitute solitary confinement in part because “detainees can communicate through the walls.”

Buck, a graduate student from the University of California-Berkeley, was in Mahalla, Egypt, covering an anti-government protest when he and his translator, Mohammed Maree, were arrested April 10.

On his way to the police station, Buck took out his cell phone and sent a message to his friends and contacts using the micro-blogging site Twitter.

The message only had one word. "Arrested."

Within seconds, colleagues in the United States and his blogger-friends in Egypt -- the same ones who had taught him the tool only a week earlier -- were alerted that he was being held.

GravatarTensions are rising between Kurdish, Arab, and Turkmen factions over power and populations in the province, the heart of northern Iraq´s oil industry.

KIRKUK, Iraq - Graffiti inside this city´s ancient hilltop citadel quickly spells out the tension between Kirkuk´s three main ethnic groups – Kurds, Arabs, and Turkmen. On one wall, an eagle descends on a two-headed serpent meant to symbolize enemies of the Kurdish nation. Next to it, the word "Arab" is erased and replaced with an etched "Kurdish" in a slogan that once read: "Kirkuk is an Arab city." Another slogan reads: "Kirkuk is Turkmen."

Kirkuk has been the object of a bitter struggle over the past five years among Iraq´s competing ethnic and sectarian groups. And now Arab, Kurd, and Turkmen factions seem to be digging in, anticipating that tensions may erupt in an area that is the center of northern Iraq´s oil industry ahead of a promised referendum on the fate of Kirkuk Province, officially still called Tamim, its previous Baath Party-era name.

GravatarBaghdad, Apr 25, 2008 (VOI)- Wrapping up a six-day visit to Iraq, the United Nations human rights envoy tasked with protecting the rights of children caught up in armed conflict said that the war-ravaged country's children are silent victims of the continued violence.

"Many of them are no longer go to school, many are recruited for violent activities or detained in custody, they lack access to the most basic services and manifest a wide range of psychological symptoms from the violence in their everyday lives," said Radhika Coomaraswamy, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, in a statement received by Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq (VOI).

She urged religious, political, military and community leaders to encourage children to stay out of the violence and return to their studies.

Gender-based violence is also reported to be on the rise, which Ms. Coomaraswamy said is "intolerable."
Only half of primary school children are attending school, down from 80 per cent in 2005, she noted. Only 40 per cent having access to clean drinking water, with the outbreak of cholera possible.

GravatarRe: The Democratic Party Is Chaos [Andy McCarthy]

I just want to make sure I have this straight:

Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, terrorist bombers and champions of the riot leaders at the 1968 Democrat Convention, become Left-wing icons who help launch the political career of the Democrats' current presidential frontrunner.

Rush Limbaugh, by contrast, merely makes an observation that he can imagine similar riots occurring at the next Democrat convention — riots that would further show the American people that (as one might suspect from the way the Left has rallied around Ayers and Dohrn) the lunatics are now the vanguard of the asylum — and Democrats like Ken Salazar want him reprimanded.

Has Sen. Salazar asked for Barack Obama to be reprimanded for maintaining a friendly relationship with an unrepentent terrorist (whose only regret is that he did not do more)? Has he asked for Bill Ayers to be reprimanded?

Limpballs should not only be reprimanded, but also REE-nounced and DEE-nounced.

GravatarDid Andy McCarthy get bitter and turn wing-nut after "Weekend At Bernie's II" bombed? Or was it before that?

GravatarAllow me to introduce you to my new closet & cupboards - http://www.gwpda.org/cupboards.jpg - and to the final instalment of the renovated bathroom - http://www.gwpda.org/bathroom.jpg - http://www.gwpda.org/tub2.jpg

GravatarWell, Al Gore is my President, and no no they can't take that away from me.

Americans have too much respect for the law, and not enough for justice.

What the media is really saying is: "Riots? Heh. We'd love to watch 'em try."

Peace--which might mean setting some shit on fire.

GravatarI think 50 shots to "put down" a groom may have been excessive. One officer had to stop and reload.

Giuliani's heritage. That and fucking Judith Nathan on camera.

GravatarHell, one of them might have had the audacity to run for President in 2056.

GravatarWhich reminds me of the election year news story that didn't bark - the Anybody But Hillary movement, seldom if ever mentioned iirc.

Last cycle there was plenty of comment, or bloggitry at least, on the Anybody But Dean 'movement' and to a lesser degree, the Anybody But Edwards sentiment (perhaps retaliatory). And it goes back - I recall rooting for the Anybody But Reagan Rs and in the olden days it was 'Stop Goldwater', also Rs in a control fight.

This time there was obviously a huge Anybody But Hillary contingent consisting of all other D factions in the party, plus hangers-on. And including The Media, as tradition, and various and sundry Fat Cats and their agents, particularly it seems some at General Electric. It was a huge contingent because it was all their accumulated enemies plus all opportunists grabbing shares that only exist in a New Pie. Huge, but unremarked because, particularly against a woman, against Hillary, it might actually help her if seen as a ganging up, fix-is-in type play.

So it might be that some large portion of Obama's miracle campaign is the success of an Anybody But Hillary movement.

Early on I did see one bumpersticker on a large SUV driven by a woman who looked like that R with the purple heart band-aid, one the rear window saying Anybody But Hillary in red, white and blue. I jump concluded that she was an R based on local demographics shall we say, but remember thinking that was a half-way odd sentiment, like all other D factions and the R party were all determined together that She Who Must Not Be Named be denied reentry to the seat of power.

GravatarAyers protested the reporter's work in a Letter to the Editor of the New York Times published September 15: "This is not a question of being misunderstood or 'taken out of context', but of deliberate distortion." In the ensuing years, he has repeatedly avowed that "no regrets" had been spoken in reference to his efforts to oppose the Vietnam War, and that "we didn't do enough" had been spoken in reference to his opinion that efforts to stop the United States from waging the Vietnam War were obviously inadequate as the war dragged on for a decade. Ayers has maintained that the two statements were not intended to elide into a wish they had set more bombs. The interview also mentions what he wrote in his forward to his memoir regarding Emile de Antonio's 1976 documentary film about Weatherman, Underground: "[Ayers] was 'embarrassed by the arrogance, the solipsism, the absolute certainty that we and we alone knew the way. The rigidity and the narcissism."

Gravatar93rd annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington

GravatarSpeaking of McCain & overflowing toilets:

not for weak tummies.

GravatarDo conservatives know what "acquitted" means?
Snow (D-SC)

"Got off on a technicality."

Right?

GravatarOops. Not acquitted. The charges against Ayers were dropped.

GravatarDropped on a technicality actually - and luck. Prosecutorial misconduct I believe.
-

GravatarWhy would soldiers expect decent barracks? I mean, if Bush and Cheney are willing to kill them, they sure as hell are not willing to spend money on them.

Gravatar"The charges against Ayers were dropped."

So he was guilty, then.

GravatarSo he was guilty, then.

So innocent they couldn't even think about trying him.

GravatarEleanor Clift's if Hillary wins everyone who doesn't support her is going to sleep with the fishes article is pretty inane.

And so helpful! Thanks Ms. Clift.

GravatarSo he was guilty, then.

I learned all the legal stuff I know from "Law and Order". Let me go as Jack McCoy.

Gravataras=ask sheesh!

GravatarThe overflowing toilet video has been pulled for security reasons.

Gravatar"Got off on a technicality."

That's so pre-9/11

Gravatar'Enkew!  And not one drop of granite or stainless steel to be seen!

Gravatarre oliver north - it does seem fair that people who plead the 5th about their actions as government officials should, at the very least, lose pensions.

Gravatarhttp://www.gwpda.org/bathroom.jpg -

eeeek. Flying geese.

Gravatareeeek. Flying geese.

TOLDJA!  And they're going NORTH too....

Gravatarwhile human excrement.....fills the floor below him.

I watched that video three times and was never quite able to identify Dick, Dubya or Donald in that mess. Which human excrement was on the floor?

GravatarOT and stating the obvious: Jon Stewart is funny. I just watched the clips on the sweet talk express and the enemy of my enemy. It gives me hope that someone on television is telling the truth sometimes.

GWPDA, yclept Irate Historian

The pics are great. Love the bathroom tile

GravatarMy TileGuy is a Great Tile Guy.

GravatarTOLDJA! And they're going NORTH too....

Not all of them. Some of them hang around all year and dump their green shit all over the place.

GravatarOK, we officially have a thread whose main topic is bathrooms.

When I first started reading here a couple of years ago, this would have put me off.

Now....

(Where's NTodd, I'm sure he could contribute.)

GravatarI think we should all boycott Bob Dylan's music. Apparently you do need a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing.

Better view.

GravatarOops:

The folks at the History Theatre are probably really excited that Comedy Central's "Daily Show" will be housed at their downtown St. Paul home during the Republican National Convention.

They just don't want to talk about it.

Rumors have been circulating for months that Jon Stewart's popular political satire cable television show would be coming to town to poke fun at the nationwide gathering of Republicans Sept. 1-4. The gossip held that the History Theatre — a 600-seat theater located mere blocks from RNC doings at the Xcel Center — would be the show's home away from home.

But the folks at Comedy Central evidently wanted to control the timing of the announcement, and so when Howard Kessler — who runs a local music production and consulting company and who is claiming credit for luring "The Daily Show" to town — spilled the beans, blood pressures rose at the History Theatre.

GravatarMy wife bought a jar of powdered "peanut butter".  You're supposed to mix it with water for pb, or mix it with the jelly for a pbj. I don't wanna...

Jon Stewart is the only one on television with guts enough to actually tell people what is going on in the metaphorical mens room that is the MSM between "journalists" and John McCain.

GravatarOh, cripes. There's an e-mail going around saying the Book of Revelation describes the anti-christ as someone having the same characteristics as Barack Obama!

Feh. Liddy Dole is the Auntie Christ.

Your lips say 'no no no,' but your jpegs say 'hop into this tub with me big boy.'

Gravataranti-christ as someone having the same characteristics as Barack Obama!

I'd give that more credence if he'd bowled a 666.

Gravatar
Your lips say 'no no no,' but your jpegs say 'hop into this tub with me big boy.'

That and the 50 gallon water heater....

GravatarBetter view.

I especially like the color combo. If I ever redo my bath here it will be deep mauve and pink.

GravatarOur new bathroom scheme is the predictable white and "tide pool blue".

GravatarOkay, if I ever want my bathroom to be clean, I better turn the computer off!

GravatarDropped on a technicality actually - and luck. Prosecutorial misconduct I believe.

No, illegal eavesdropping.

GravatarTalavera tile really only has about 8 colors altogether - and saltillo only the one.

GravatarSo, anyone gonna break down the NFL draft? If not...

GravatarGood morning to snow. Spring, my ass.

GravatarSo, anyone gonna break down the NFL draft? If not...

Packers will take a QB. They already told their QB to not be offended by it.

Gravatarowls!!!!!!

GravatarPackers will take a QB. They already told their QB to not be offended by it.

Hmmm. I guess that Daunte Culpepper was in GB this week. They could do (barely) worse, I guess.

GravatarYeah, Eleanor Clift is concern trolling.

Of course, the seriously vengeful assholes are Hillary's dipshit advisers, who think that she needs to seem "tough", and unfortunately they take a crayon scribbled page from the playbook of the petulant three year old, and we get a display of widdle feet stomping.

GravatarWhy is the "Clintons are Evil" position so illegitimate?

They are indeed demonstrably evil. Not because Andrew Sullivan says so, but because they have spent their lives betraying progressive principles whenever and wherever it has been politically convenient.

From the execution of Ricky Ray Rector, to the fetishization of deficit reduction to their fearless stand against public enemy #1: the welfare mother, the Clinton's have been whoring themselves to the right for decades.

I'm not a huge Obama fan, but I jump at the opportunity cut the Clinton's and their circle of assholes from inner loop of my party, the people's party.

As for their chief progressive apologist, Paul Krugman...was he fighting the good fight in the 1990s? No sir. He has been an indispensable voice of reason in recent years but still, his brand of liberalism was (and probably still is) more in line with the Economist than with the Nation.

GravatarThe press is totally corrupt. Even if Clift she wrote is true Clift should be ashamed to write it. She tries her best to call the Clintons vindictive when the text of the article clearly shows the vindictiveness of the press.

Whatever Dem takes on McCain, the press will take on the Dem so they can have McCain to suck up to. Anyone who thinks that Obama can get past "politics as usual" is waiting to be swift boated from the blind side.

GravatarMaybe it's inane, but maybe it's also true.
