GravatarDon't forget Steve Dunleavy's part in all of this. When we made NBK we wanted to send Robert Downey Jr. to study with the sleaziest tabloid journalist we could find. We found him -- Steve Dunleavy. After two weeks Downey came back sporting an Australian accent and everyone felt like they needed a shower, but nothing could compare to the real thing.

Remember when Dunleavy confronted William Kennedy Smith rape victim witness Michelle Cassone with nude pictures of herself on air and she bit him?

A real class act.

GravatarThe Ministry of Defence is conducting a major study into brain injury in troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan amid fears that thousands of soldiers may have suffered damage after being exposed to high-velocity explosions.

The US army says as many as 20% of its soldiers and marines have suffered "mild traumatic brain injury" (mTBI) from blows to the head or shockwaves caused by explosions. The condition, which can lead to memory loss, depression and anxiety, has been designated as one of four "signature injuries" of the Iraq conflict by the US department of defence, which is introducing a large-scale screening programme for troops returning from the frontline.

GravatarThat's some man who can be castrated three times until it takes . . . . .

Well, it's the frog DNA they had to splice in. Gives the guy the ability to regenerate his balls.

The hysteria of the wingnuts over Bill Clinton is really hard to describe acurrately. I recall haveing the privledge of asking Gene Lyons online "what motivates these people?" and his response was not ideological, but financial. Apparently there was money to be made in fabulating scandal around Bill Clinton, plenty of dumbshit freeper types around to buy the boos and wallow in their irrational hatred of the man.

So Arkansas turned into a factory for cranking out fables about Bill Clinton and his legendary depravity. The Clenis does rule.

GravatarOT: These days there is a trade fair for pretty much everything. And if you can have one for weddings, you can have one for divorces as well.

That is the message from the organisers of the world's first divorce fair, which is taking place in Vienna this weekend, aimed at helping couples make the break as painlessly as possible.

"If people untie the knot in good faith, it can turn out that the day you divorce is the best day of your life," said the organiser, Anton Barz, who also arranges wedding fairs.

GravatarAfternoon, rational people.

mTBI: 1 in 5 soldiers come home with it AND most of them aren't diagnosed and treated.

GravatarThe sad fact is that not a single winger ever had a moments second thought on this case. I wish there was a Truth Foundation that would have been able to follow up by, for example, sending everyone on Cole's mailing list a detailed description of what dummond did in MO.

Minor Traumatic Brain Injury, often caused by the shockwaves from IED explosions.

There's often no outward sign of injury, so these guys don't get any treatment.

But Cheney Is French.

Turns out they old ancestor who he has in common with Obama is French.

I always thought Cheney was so old world.

Freedom cheese all round.

GravatarWhen Michael Eavis, dairy farmer and founder of the Glastonbury festival, wanted to install a solar panel on his cowshed, he foresaw few difficulties. The 100-kilowatt system would provide enough power to run most of the local village and save about 43 tonnes of CO2 a year. The problem was the £320,000 it would cost.

Mr Eavis decided in January to apply to the then Department for Trade and Industry for a capital grant from its low-carbon buildings programme. But he was told he was not eligible because he already received farm support; awarding him both would amount to double state aid, which is illegal under European law.

Bill Clinton, Mafioso...

DEEP INSIDE THE CLINTONIAN REICH
THE ARKANSAS MOB

http://www.etherzone.com/1998/re...998/ reich5.html

Bill Clinton's mob ties can be traced back to his boy hood in the 1950's and early 1960's. His uncle Raymond Clinton played a key role in boy Clinton's life. His Uncle ran a store front dealership in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where Clinton spent hours hanging around with the big boys. Behind the facade was a thriving full fledge gambling operation, complete with slot machines. Hot Springs became a resort Mecca for many mob leaders at the time, including Al Capone.

Al Capone died in 1947.

GravatarYeah I'm not sure I trust someone running the country who makes his decisions based on this guy's reporting:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focu...ws/920403/ posts

Is this anyway for a 65-year-old "journalist" to act?

Steve Dunleavy - the grizzled New York Post columnist notorious for his alcohol-fueled escapades (on at least one occasion, he's been found unconscious by a co-worker and presumed dead) - suffered a new indignity early yesterday.

Two men mugged him at 3:15 a.m. while he was passed out on a bench on the corner of W. 47th St. and Sixth Ave. - near his favorite bar, Langan's.

Why was he sleeping there? "First of all, I was drunk," he told The News' Richard Weir. "Second paragraph, I was comatose."

According to a newsroom spy, after returning to the Post, Dunleavy vomited near the metropolitan editor's desk.

The perps relieved him of $70 in cash, his UN press card, his American Express card and his Post ID, cops said.

Dunleavy said he kicked one of the thieves "just below the behind." Alerted by a witness, cops collared Christophe Nalls, 33, of Brooklyn, and Carnell Malone, 43, of Manhattan, a few blocks away. They were charged with grand larceny and possession of stolen property.

But Dunleavy, who was locked up in Des Moines three years ago for public intoxication, said he sympathized with the muggers.

"I don't want them to go to jail," asserted the pompadoured Prince of Darkness, in Langan's 12 hours later. "I want them to go to John Jay College and tell the cops how they do it."

GravatarReligious and anti-abortion groups have been holding a rally to mark 40 years since abortion was legalised.

Activists met at the Houses of Parliament to call for a reduction in the upper time limit for abortion.

They later walked to Westminster Cathedral for a service commemorating 6.7m abortions performed since 1967.

Marie Stopes International said that although abortion rates needed to come down, the 1967 act had made it safer for women to terminate pregnancies.

GravatarWASHINGTON (Reuters) - A test of a missile defense system successfully intercepted a ballistic target, the U.S. military said on Saturday, a boost to development of an anti-missile shield program.

The hit by the Lockheed Martin Corp.-built Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) program was the fourth in as many tests and involved intercepting the missile outside the Earth's atmosphere, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency said.

The THAAD is designed to defend troops, population centers and critical facilities against short- to medium-range ballistic missiles of a type that could be fired by Iran or North Korea. The system could also be sold to U.S. allies like Israel.

Military representatives from Israel, Australia and the United Arab Emirates observed the test conducted off the island of Kauai in Hawaii, said Riki Ellison, who heads a missile defense advocacy group funded in part by military contractors.

The test conducted late Friday evening was designed to show how the radar, launcher, fire control equipment and procedures of the system worked together, as well as the interceptor detecting and destroying the target using only the force of the collision.

The system is a part of a broader U.S. anti-missile shield and is the only one able to engage targets in or outside the atmosphere.

I believe that this was a retry from last week, when the target wasn't aimed correctly they had to cancel, because the target wasn't going to be where they wanted it to be.

GravatarBill Clinton, Mafioso...

Good grief. These people are nuts.

No bigger mob than Cheney's crew. They make Capone look like Little Orphan Annie.

Gravatar because the target wasn't going to be where they wanted it to be.

Hilarious.

You see, this is the problem with the entire SDI project.

The tests have to be rerun to render the results that "validate" the concept.

I doubt that any enemy who feels the need to lob missiles at the US will deign to grant the SDI boys a mulligan.

GravatarI believe that this was a retry from last week, when the target wasn't aimed correctly they had to cancel, because the target wasn't going to be where they wanted it to be.

Shorter Lockheed-Martin: "Try to attack me! Go ahead! Wait - put your left arm here, and turn this way, now take a half step back.... ok, now try to grab me with your right hand!"

Gravatarhttp://agonist.org/ stirling_newb..._bungle_for_oil

Stirling Newbery on what the new base price for oil will be:

Peak dollar capacity, not peak production capacity, is what is making $100/bbl the new "over/under" number among the oil traders I talk to.

The real reason for the spike in oil prices is the pouring of dollars into the global economy meant to bail out the banking sector without imposing any accountability on the people who run it.

I recall reading that the Middle East oil suppliers saw the increase in per barrel price as simply maintaining the status quo for their revenue since they trade oil in a declining value dollar.

We are so fucked.

Which is A-OK with BushCo and Rethugs since the Northeast, which is primarily heated with oil, is only too Blue. Might has well make the votes blue from costs.....

GravatarBTW, it's trivial to fool the THAAD system into firing at a dummy round or chaff instead of the actual warhead.

The ONLY anti-missile defense that can work is some sort of Trek or Star Wars style "deflector shield" which is still very much SF, not real.

GravatarSteve Dunleavy - give him credit for being back in the bar 12 hours later.

Steve is a journalist of the old school who just does what he is paid to do. He's nowhere near as loathsome as Hucksterbee who decided to kill someone based on Steve's b.s.

GravatarI was working with a bunch of nuclear physicists when SDI was proposed - not one among them thought it was anything more than a load of crap designed to transfer money from taxpayers to contractors.

Lacking volunteers, State Department plans largest call-up since Vietnam

WASHINGTON - In the largest call-up of U.S. diplomats since the Vietnam War, the State Department is planning to order some of its personnel to serve at the American Embassy in Iraq because of a lack of volunteers.

Those designated “prime candidates”—from 200 to 300 diplomats—will be notified Monday that they have been selected for one-year postings to fill the 40 to 50 vacancies expected next year.

GravatarC'mon, MCM! Stop being stenographers, expecially about matters of national security. Maybe, just maybe, you ought to do some research before prattling on about some info from highly partisan administration officials???

Seems the building Israel bombed, which was being touted as a nuke facility being built with input from North Korea, was started in 2001--so plan began even earlier.

And we knew nothing until now???? GIve me a break.

"The mystery surrounding the construction of what might have been a nuclear reactor in Syria deepened yesterday," according to the NYT, "when a company released a satellite photo showing that the main building was well under way in September 2003 — four years before Israeli jets bombed it."

well, it would be if we weren't spending so much money on it. Think of the other uses that money could be put to. Maybe SCHIP.

GravatarAshley personally contested his parole.

Huckabee paroled him anyways.

The reporter who originally was going to let Dumond make his claim as martyr lived down the street from a relative here, he died recently, and was himself a good fellow.

My HS teacher was the cameraman, they were stopped backwoods style on the way to/from the interview and given reassurances not to make it look like the attacker was Mr.Nice guy.

Dumond had a history of acting out such attacks, stalked and paced his victims, probably had some similar events in their community, another reason for the outrage on news of his parole.

One of his victims had a child by him, the ultimate GOP wet dream 'snow flake' baby.
