I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

It was truly wonderful Atrios. A fine speech. Thank you Senator Clinton.

That close to first!

GravatarA fine speech. Thank you Senator Clinton.

which should have astounded no one.

Gravatarwell done hillary

now let's move on to elect obama

also, in re I Larry Johnson: it would be irresonsible of us not to discuss the rumors of tapes of him fucking sheep in drag

GravatarI've had a lot less fear about this primary than some others. In the end I think we all will look back and say that the primary battle actually was a plus for the Dems.

Gravatarfucking sheep in drag

Who was in drag? Him or the sheep?

GravatarSHE SHOULD HAVE GIVEN THIS SPEECH IN FEBRUARY!

GravatarI thought Clinton did well today...she has some qualities I admire and she is one
that you really LOVE having on your side.
BUT-she has some pretty nasty things to clean up-things she said about Obama that the Republicans
are going to play over and over....
The " Me and McCain have a lifetime of experience" and Obama " he has a speech" shit...
What was missing today for me is no mention of McCain.
If she can go after McCain with the same venom that she did Obama, we should be in good shape.
She is hard not to love in this moment.

GravatarA fine speech. Thank you Senator Clinton.

which should have astounded no one.

Of course not, but hatred is a powerful filter.

GravatarThanks, A.

How's my home town treating you?

GravatarWhat was missing today for me is no mention of McCain.

No need. She said we will work to elect Obama. End of story.

GravatarMr. NTodd Johnson is correct.

Gravatarso, ok, this is interpretation but it's the same one i've been repeating and it seems to be falling out as i predicted, give or take a day or two:

clinton and obama were very close. it was clear obama would win. but this was the first time that every state* felt like they had a say in the primaries. it would have made no difference to obama or the party if clinton had dropped out a week or two earlier, or even a month. but since she said she would go all the way through the primaries, she couldn't exaclty tell her supporters "i'm still in it! vote for obama!" instead, she dug herself into more personal debt in exchange for getting way more democrats registered and involved. after the last one, before the official totals were in, on that night she did not concede but of you listened she was clearly saying "it's obama's race now, but my supporters have to feel they are still connected in what i do next. which will be to help ensure obama's election. oh, and if there's any way he could help out with the money problem that would be appreciated."

so it took them a couple of days to get together and plan next steps. and then she made it clear to everyone that supporting clinton means electing obama and defeating mccain.

i really don't see why everyone has been so excited about it.

GravatarFor damn sure the long, long runup to the nomination of Barack got an awful lot of people to register, and played a lot on the teebee. All good.

I don't know how many new Democrats were registered in all, but I seem to recall 700K PA, 300K VA, 130K IN, and it would not be nuts to think we're looking at another 3+ million D votes than we had in 2004.

A million here, a million there, pretty soon you're talking about real political power.

GravatarWhat was missing today for me is no mention of McCain.

She made it perfectly clear that there should be a Democrat in the White House.

Gravatar*not valid in florida or michigan.

GravatarHecate, I left this downthread, but I just wanted to say:

Hecate,

Very happy for and proud of you for going, despite the heat and the delay.

It was a beautiful speech. In retrospect, I can see why she needed a couple of days to compose herself after Tuesday. She delivered a grand slam.

It's a great day to be a Democrat.

And I'd add, the Republicans are truly shitting themselves. Just heard a dude on MSNBC...and the RNC is putting out several press releases already today, putting Obama down.

GravatarI didn't see it either, so I hated it.

Gravatargo ahead and poke

i'll continue to be gracious
Senator Clinton made a fine speech today. Loaded with goodness.

GravatarIn her speech, did she actually give a reason why we should support Obama, like specifics?

Yes, about five or six, followed each time by "And that's why I'm going to work to get Senator Obama elected president." Pretty soon, the crowd was yelling the line each time with her.

Well said.

What else can they do....praise McCain?

GravatarShe made it perfectly clear that there should be a Democrat in the White House.

WHY? She is on record saying that McCain is BETTER then Obama.
She Has to clear this up.

Anon, 4th Edition Whitey

They can ... try.

GravatarCNN's coverage is superior to MSNBC right now.

GravatarOf course not, but hatred is a powerful filter.
NTodd, HilFemWack

which is why it is prolly not a good idea to have her as v.p.

she can pull in her support on the positive from outside. from inside, the hate is a poweful counterbalance.

i suspect that if she does not want a lifetime job in the senate, she will have the opportunity to take a cabinet position.

GravatarI know the RNC's strategy will be to use things Hillary has said against Barack in their advertising, but really, what was said was pretty lame in retrospect, compared to McCain's voting record and policies.

Remember, a key meme this election should be McCain's voting record against women's rights. It's hugely important, given the amount of support Hillary received from women.

GravatarI don't know how many new Democrats were registered in all, but I seem to recall 700K PA, 300K VA, 130K IN, and it would not be nuts to think we're looking at another 3+ million D votes than we had in 2004.

36 million Dems cast ballots in this race. 15 million in 2004.

GravatarIf you want the hate to stop, why bring it up?

GravatarCNN's coverage is superior to MSNBC right now.

That's like comparing dogshit to catshit.

GravatarBabar in 2008!

Gravatarwhich is why it is prolly not a good idea to have her as v.p.

Actually, given she earned 18 million votes, it's clear not everybody hates her. I was referring to certain people on a certain blog.

GravatarIf you want the hate to stop, why bring it up?

Because we've already seen it even in the wake of her concession. Sunshine. Disinfectant.

GravatarWHY? She is on record saying that McCain is BETTER then Obama.
She Has to clear this up.
anna | Homepage | 06.07.08 - 2:50 pm | #

no, she isn't.

she is on record as saying mccain would have a campaign advantage on a particular meme.

she is on record as saying, during the campaign while she was still running and might have even had a very slim chance, "i hope i am the nominee. but if i am not, it would be a grave error not to vote for senator obama."

GravatarWHY? She is on record saying that McCain is BETTER then Obama.
She Has to clear this up.
anna

That's not what she said. You're concern trolling. She did say some things, but as time plays out rather rapidly, I'm absolutely certain she'll repudiate them.

GravatarSome wanker on MSNBC yesterday predicted she'd still hold out on supporting Obama, which was absolute nonsense. At this point it would be lose/lose for Senator Clinton.

If he loses, she'd share some of the blame. If he wins, she becomes irrelevant.

She done good here.

fuck that shit.

Thanks Hillary Clinton. Love you Hecate and Vicki. Have a good day everybody.

Gravatargreat speech, classy and pitch perfect tone.

it's obvious Clinton is sincere about her support for BHO, and determined to get her supporters to be as committed as she is to seeing a Dem in the White House.

Gravatar36 million Dems cast ballots in this race. 15 million in 2004.
NTodd, HilFemWack

Thank you, sir.

My guess is that not all of the 21M difference is due to new voters; a lot of people got themselves to the polls because of the compelling nature of the candidates.

But maybe most of the 21M are new registrations...

If the Supremes stick their noses into this, there's gonna be another American Revolution...

GravatarActually, given she earned 18 million votes, it's clear not everybody hates her.

oh, no. i realize that. but i think as a campaigner, she can mostly convince her supporters that they should vote obama. people who won't, won't even if she is veep. but there is some contingent that would vote for obama, but would stay home if hrc is on the ticket. i think.

and stay at homes are the problem. obama will win, but we need every dem voter out there pulling in the downstream candidates.

GravatarObama has no experience screwing things up. Give the man a chance!

Gravatar
36 million Dems cast ballots in this race. 15 million in 2004.

How monstrous it was of her to stay in the race until the end. People actually had to make an effort to vote.

GravatarShe was speaking to her supporters, not Obama's. Obama supporters are already going to vote for him. Give her a break, it was a magnificent concession.

Gravatar

a lifetime of experience to the Office of Commander in Chief-and Sen. Obama has a Speech"
Bill Clinton said this too.
" He would have been my Pastor" how about that one?

She did good today and I believe her when she says she'll do whatever it takes to elect Obama. But the idea that it was baseless to think she might not have done either is just silly...

GravatarRemember:
Here is what the Republicans have given us in the past 30-odd years--Nixon and Agnew, both criminals who were driven from office and should have gone to prison--Ronnie Reagan, an affable fool who stood where he was told and read the lines his handlers wrote him--and draft-dodging Dick and Mr. Mission Accomplished, two cowardly chickenhawks addressing their insecurities over their masculinity by directing others to go to war and die for their vanity war.

Gravataranna the concern troll links as her "homepage" BarackObama.com which at this moment has a lovely "Thank You Senator Clinton" welcome page.

Gravatarsheets above, and I took Frist

GravatarBesides, the experience meme is jive. How much decidering does a Senator really do? Not as much as a Gumminer.

We aren't electing a Senator, a legislator, we are electing a deciderer. We want a deciderer with superior judgement, ability to pick the best people to surround himself with - not yes men and political hacks - delegate authority and listen to wise council before he decides to act. For my money, that's Obama, hands down. How much experience did Eisenhower have in politics?

Gravataranna : She has given the Republicans a lot of ammunition and I can't sweep that under the rug.

And as a result, she lost the nomination, and had to concede. Don't think that that wasn't a part of all of those phone calls she got this week. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, so I expect her to keep her word and work for a Democratic victory.

That will do.

GravatarHow much experience did Eisenhower have in politics?

Indeed. Unlike a lot of military men talked up in politics (Patton, MacArthur, McCain) Eisenhower had more going for him then macho and a decent but irrelevant combat record.

Eisenhower organized and ran the largest overseas military operation in history, held together an alliance that had every possibility of dissolving into bickering, bigotry, and egotism, made terribly important decisions base on the needs of his country and his men rather than his own ego, and had the respect of pretty much everyone who worked with him.

The best modern military writers, like Max Hastings (British) and Rick Atkinsen (American) give Ike plenty of praise for his executive skills. Strictly speaking, he had more and more intensive diplomatic and adminstrative experience then all but a handful of our recent political leaders.
