A three only would have tied it. Plus, if the shooter wants to waste time at about 28 feet out (like the Celtic guard did), let him.

GravatarDamnit Atrios, why don't you ever post Foghat or something good for once?
~

GravatarIn the future, spelling will be abolished.

GravatarHawks almost blew that game. WhyTF didn't they foul to prevent the 3?
Elias | Homepage | 05.02.08 - 11:07 pm | #

that crap happens a lot. phoenix should have fouled san antonio, leading by 3 with little time left in both regulation and the first ot, in game 1 of that series, and instead let san antonio shoot 2 3's which went in. sa won the game and the series.

Gravatar...so is this a future post from the past, or a post from the present predicting the future, or a future post coming back to its past to tell us what our future holds?

Yep.

GravatarI was a big Celtics fan for the longest time, but can't get very interested in this team, even though they've had a good year. Don't know why.

GravatarA three only would have tied it. Plus, if the shooter wants to waste time at about 28 feet out (like the Celtic guard did), let him.
~~~~~
Ask Memphis about that.
If Celts make the 3, overtime.
If Hawks foul, they're up 1, with possession, at the line with, maybe, 3 seconds.
GravatarAT least he didn't post Sam Kennison doing Wild Thing with Fawn.
...OK, that's what I thought!
GravatarImpeachment is unlikely at this late date, but to quote myself from a previous thread:
I comfort myself with this little fantasy.
It's January 20, 2009. President Obama has delivered his inaugural
speech, and has, it appears, in a spirit of unity, asked Bush, Cheney,
Rice, et al, to come to the White House with him.
As
Obama takes his seat behind the desk in the Oval Office, an aide hands
him a document, ("You'd think I'd at least have no paperwork today, right?") Bush smirks and nudges Cheney in the ribs. President Obama signs it, and hands it back. The aide leaves.
There is some small talk, and US Marshalls enter the Office.
They
place Bush, Cheney, et al, under arrest. Shortly thereafter, we see the following on
live TV, Bush, Cheney, et al, in bright orange coveralls, hand cuffs
and leg irons, being boarded onto a jet bound for the ICC in The Hague,
where they will be tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
I
then imagine President Obama, recalling how he signed the Executive
Order (right in front of all of them!) stripping Bush, Cheney, et al of all soverign immunities against
extradition, smiles to himself and thinks: "Who's the bitch, now?"
GravatarI'm working to figure out this Scramble thing, and no, I did not read the rules.
GravatarI'm confused. This is Matt Pond P.A.
I am forever grateful to Atrios for turning me onto Matt Pond. In fact, it was a video for this very song that he posted in '05 that did it.
GravatarWhen is the last time we had a scroll troll?
I wish I had an ego big enough and enough contempt for people to write for the Times: it would be wonderful to so full of myself and think so little of everyone else.
(I guess)
hmm......
GravatarWhat's a scroll troll?
Elias
Scroll trolls use to cut and paste long screeds about nothing so that you had to scroll through the bullshit if you wanted to read everyone's comments. That is why we can only have twenty lines in a post. (Fucking assholes - it has ruined the poetry here)
Maybe. But Pierce is the real deal. For that matter, so's the rest of this team. They just need to step up and prove it in the playoffs. That was a great game, and the Hawks are playing their hearts out.
With that, good night.
GravatarBreak-ins plague targets of US Attorneys
Larisa Alexandrovna, Muriel Kane and Lindsay Beyerstein
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA – In two states where US attorneys are already under fire for serious allegations of political prosecutions, seven people associated with three federal cases have experienced 10 suspicious incidents including break-ins and arson.
These crimes raise serious questions about possible use of deliberate intimidation tactics not only because of who the victims are and the already wide criticism of the prosecutions to begin with, but also because of the suspicious nature of each incident individually as well as the pattern collectively. Typically burglars do not break-into an office or private residence only to rummage through documents, for example, as is the case with most of the burglaries in these two federal cases.
In Alabama, for instance, the home of former Democratic Governor Don Siegelman was burglarized twice during the period of his first indictment. Nothing of value was taken, however, and according to the Siegelman family, the only items of interest to the burglars were the files in Siegelman's home office.
Siegelman's attorney experienced the same type of break-in at her office.
In neighboring Mississippi, a case brought against a trial lawyer and three judges raises even more disturbing questions. Of the four individuals in the same case, three of the US Attorney’s targets were the victims of crimes during their indictment or trial. This case, like that of Governor Siegelman, has been widely criticized as a politically motivated prosecution by a Bush US Attorney.
Gravatar"Will us Hillary supporters need to attend re-education camps if Obama is the nominee?"
Nah, but I do recommend lots of prayer if Hillary wins.
GravatarWell, if she manages to wrest to nomination from Obama, she won't win.
I've been saying all along that of course I'll support the Democratic nominee, whoever it is, and I suppose when push comes to shove I will because McCain is unthinkable.
But if it's Hillary Clinton it's going to be a more difficult task than I ever imagined. She and her campaign have been loathsome, and they're getting more vile by the day.
GravatarSo our cluster munitions will still be fatal in 200 yrs?
CHESTER, Va. - Like many boys in the South, Sam White got hooked on the Civil War early, digging up rusting bullets and military buttons in the battle-scarred earth of his hometown.
ADVERTISEMENT
As an adult, he crisscrossed the Virginia countryside in search of wartime relics — weapons, battle flags, even artillery shells buried in the red clay. He sometimes put on diving gear to feel for treasures hidden in the black muck of river bottoms.
But in February, White's hobby cost him his life: A cannonball he was restoring exploded, killing him in his driveway.
More than 140 years after Lee surrendered to Grant, the cannonball was still powerful enough to send a chunk of shrapnel through the front porch of a house a quarter-mile from White's home in this leafy Richmond suburb.
White's death shook the close-knit fraternity of relic collectors and raised concerns about the dangers of other Civil War munitions that lay buried beneath old battlefields. Explosives experts said the fatal blast defied extraordinary odds.
Gravatarlike any working class kid...
GravatarI have read something similar in reverse from those who support Hillary Clinton: that if Obama is the candidate and loses to McCain they will blame Obama's supporters for ever.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Funny, but I've never heard Hillary supporters demand Obama withdraw with the kind of fervor we witnessed the past couple of months.
Now suddenly a doctored video surfaces just 4 days before a crucial set of primaries.
Even Atrios gets in on the act, but, to his credit, corrects the record.
So who benefits the most?

GravatarThere really is no tolerance amoung liberals.

Liberals only tolerate their own version of tolerance, everything else is a threat to that view and is treated as such, even if the view is liberal but different, or even if the views are more or less the same, but packaged differently.

No union, no tolerance, just a bunch of people whining with no dialogue.

Cool.

For Hillary to wrest the nomination from him, her campaign would have to change those very same rules..Which is why I'd understand Obama's supporters if they did harbor resentment.

Sen. Barack Obama continued accepting donations from oil company executives and employees last month even as he aired ads in which he stated he took no oil company money, his campaign finance reports show.

Obama has taken at least $263,000 from oil company executives, family members and employees since entering the presidential race last year, including $46,000 last month. At least $140,000 has come in chunks of between $1,000 and $2,300, the maximum permitted under federal law.

GravatarDemocrats Okay Funds for Covert Ops
Secret Bush "Finding" Widens War on Iran
By Andrew Cockburn

02/05/08 "Counterpunch" -- - Six weeks ago, President Bush signed a secret finding authorizing a covert offensive against the Iranian regime that, according to those familiar with its contents, "unprecedented in its scope." Bush’s secret directive covers actions across a huge geographic area – from Lebanon to Afghanistan – but is also far more sweeping in the type of actions permitted under its guidelines – up to and including the assassination of targeted officials. This widened scope clears the way, for example, for full support for the military arm of Mujahedin-e Khalq, the cultish Iranian opposition group, despite its enduring position on the State Department's list of terrorist groups.
Similarly, covert funds can now flow without restriction to Jundullah, or "army of god," the militant Sunni group in Iranian Baluchistan – just across the Afghan border -- whose leader was featured not long ago on Dan Rather Reports cutting his brother in law's throat.
Other elements that will benefit from U.S. largesse and advice include Iranian Kurdish nationalists, as well the Ahwazi arabs of south west Iran. Further afield, operations against Iran's Hezbollah allies in Lebanon will be stepped up, along with efforts to destabilize the Syrian regime. All this costs money, which in turn must be authorized by Congress, or at least a by few witting members of the intelligence committees. That has not proved a problem. An initial outlay of $300 million to finance implementation of the finding has been swiftly approved with bipartisan support, apparently regardless of the unpopularity of the current war and the perilous condition of the U.S. economy.

CHARLESTON, SC—One of Bill Clinton's talking points this week is just how thick Hillary Clinton and John McCain are.

Today in Spartanburg, he described them as "very close." And the other night in Myrtle Beach, he called them "good friends," and said "they like each other." The topic seems to be coming up relatively often, and unprompted (not to mention that it's different than the attitude McCain has taken towards Clinton).

GravatarArmed Might of US Marred By Begging Bowl to Arabs

Sometime in the next two weeks, fleet radar operator may notice a blip on their screens that represents something rather more profound: America's growing financial weakness. The blip will be former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin's plane commencing its descent into Abu Dhabi. Rubin's responsibility these days is to help keep Citigroup afloat despite a balance sheet still waterlogged, despite frantic bail out efforts by the Federal Reserve and others, by staggering losses in mortgage bonds. The Abu Dhabi Sovereign Wealth Fund injected $7.5 billion last November (albeit at a sub-prime interest rate of eleven percent,) but the bank's urgent need for fresh capital persists, and Abu Dhabi is where the money is.

Even if those radar operators pay no attention to Mr. Rubin's flight, and the ironic contrast it illustrates between American military power and financial weakness, others will, and not just in Tehran. There's not much a finding can do about that.

Andrew Cockburn is a regular CounterPunch contributor. He lives in Washington DC. His most recent book is Rumsfeld: His Rise, Fall and Catastrophic Legacy.

GravatarJosh at TPM:

I'd also forgotten that back in September, when President Bush first rolled out the Korea model of the permanent occupation of Iraq which Sen. McCain (R) has now embraced as his platform, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office did a study of what a 50 year 'Korea model' presence in Iraq would cost.

The study was done with highly conservative estimates, figuring a much smaller contingent of troops, and basically all the best case scenario numbers, including everything being basically chill over there like McCain says it'll be.

They came up with an additional $2 trillion over 50 years.

Now, an interesting point of comparison is the projected shortfall in the Social Security budget, which is on the contrary tabulated on highly pessimistic assumption. That number over 75 years is projected at $4.7 trillion.

Now I hasten to add, again, that the Iraq numbers are highly optimistic and the Social Security ones highly pessimistic. If we do a simple back of the envelope calculation we get the 75 year cost of Iraq would be $3 trillion.

And remember that the Social Security number is the one that is supposed make the country curl up, collapsed in upon itself and supernova.

GravatarSteveLG--

I think, even if Iraq goes away soon, the military budget will cause us to collapse. We're now spending (on just the advertised defense budget--there's lots more squirreled away for DoD in other parts of the budget) about five times a peacetime budget, and that doesn't include supplemental war expenditures.

That level of spending isn't sustainable, and we're reaching the cumulative effects of that spending posture now.

And, sadly, I don't see that situation changing anytime soon, no matter who's in the WH.

GravatarWant to fix the budget? Legalize marijuana and kill the prison-industial complex. Kill the usury going on with the credit card companies and banks. Switch to growing hemp instead of cutting down our forests and you get better paper and an alternative source of plastic. Jack up support for mass transit and tax the hell out of private transportation getting less than 15 MPG. Tax the people who are getting fat making money off of capital gains because that's not putting out any products. Tax companies moving money and jobs out of the country. Get the hell out of Iraq and Afghanstan and lament how badly we fucked up the whole region. Stop with the ethanol from corn and stop lying about how many people are out of work and what inflation really is. Because only after we do the hard things can we start to fix the mess.

Or maybe I'm just tired and cranky and unreasonable...

GravatarOr maybe I'm just tired and cranky and unreasonable...
atablarasa

If you are, I'm right there with you. You've summed up a great stinking wad of it that needs fixing, desperately.

GravatarSarah, it's the same thing that drives Corporations to ruin themselves in the long run for the sake of padding the pockets of the people who are going to bail out before the crash. Bush never understood what it would cost and never cared enough to learn, because as a sociopath we're all cardboard cutouts. And Cheney and the rest are only in it to rape and pillage. They have never been loyal to the country - only to their clique - and when the country comes falling down, they'll be on their way to some other country, like locusts.

GravatarSheesh. With rants like those I think it's time for bed...

GravatarIt was Andrew Mellon (Treasury Secretary to three of the worst presidents in the country's history--Harding, Coolidge and Hoover) who said, "depressions return assets to their rightful owners."

And, it was Jefferson who said that concentrations of wealth created faux aristocracies.

Both were right. Guess which view has prevailed over time?

What was NCLB but yet another disguised attempt to keep another generation in the dark about the true nature of the struggle.

GravatarHillary is one tough cookie to go in there and manhandle O' Reilly, to dominate him and not flinch once. The very next day she's up at the crack of dawn riding to work with a steel worker and buying large black coffee' at the service station. That night she's doing shots of whiskey.

GravatarI imagine Hillary is a big football fan as well.

GravatarI love it man; because you are one of the uber-bloggers, your musical taste is just so hip and important, whereas those of us who aren't uber-bloggers, well, our taste don't mean shit.

Kudos, Duncan, and thanks for telling me what music I should dig.

Ok, that was hilarious, I agree. Had the same effect the Jingle Cats and Dogs songs do on Magoo.

When it got to the yodeling part, Magoo lit into Arrow with a flying leap and both paws a-batting.

GravatarSo, we took young Sebastiaan from The Netherlands down to the tiny little ski village that The Hulk has his house in, Girdwood Alaska.

Showed him around, fed him at the Double Musky a piece of beef that would feed a Chinese family of 6 for a week.

On the way back, pulled the car over and made him get out with his camera. Why would I do that, make the poor guy from the flatlands of Europe get out and walk, you might ask?

Well, it's not a caturday pic, but Mountain Sheeples! or Goats, I dunno.

GravatarVoters in Louisiana's 6th Congressional District, held by Republicans for 32 years, will choose Saturday between Democrat Don Cazayoux, who leads in the polls, and Republican Woody Jenkins. The seat had belonged to former Republican Rep. Richard Baker, who resigned earlier this year to work with hedge funds.

Villify the miniscule amount the gummint asks inorder to kepp highways and bridges in repair, and let the oil companies pocket the difference in open daylight.

Yeah, those candidates really win my confidence that anything will change.

GravatarIt's disgusting that even 5 years after "mission accomplished" the media continue to acquiesce with the ridiculous "4000" framing.

US military casualties from Bush's Iraq disaster are officially at 30,000.

For the combined Iraq/Afghanistan meatgrinder, the US military has granted over 100,000 permanent disability applications by vets. Over 300,000 report traumatic brain injury. And around 300,000 report suffering PTSD. This is out of 1.6 million total servicemen.

4000 my ass.

But the DNC is hardly backing down. In a statement released to The Huffington Post late Friday, DNC communications director Karen Finney said, "John McCain should stop whining. We can see why John McCain doesn't want people to see this ad, but its time for him to defend his own words. Clearly John McCain knows that the more people learn about his real record and his willingness to keep our brave troops in Iraq for 100 years, the more they'll see he is not the right choice for America's future."

GravatarNever before have i doted on Rachel Maddow's appearance for any reason -- but i swear someone
saddled her with a huge pair of "prothestic" (?) eyelashes during her "Countdown" appearance last night. She was blinking up a storm, something I've never noticed her doing before. What gives?

GravatarEven with the distraction, Rachel's point about Huggy Bear's "war for oil" gaffe in Denver yesterday was well taken. How many more of these "moments" does McCain get, I wonder?

GravatarMorning peeps.

Just got done reading Greenwald on the renewed effort to grant amnesty to the telecoms and the Blue Dog Dems that seem to be leading the pack. What the fuck is wrong with people?

GravatarBest quote from yesterday.

I comfort myself with this little fantasy.

It's January 20, 2009. President Obama has delivered his inaugural speech, and has, it appears, in a spirit of unity, asked Bush, Cheney, Rice, et al, to come to the White House with him.

As Obama takes his seat behind the desk in the Oval Office, an aide hands him a document, Obama signs it, and hands it back. The aide leaves. There is some small talk, and US Marshalls enter the Office.

They place Bush, Cheney, et al, under arrest. Shortly thereafter, we see on live TV, Bush, Cheney, et al, in bright orange coveralls, hand cuffs and leg irons, being boarded onto a jet bound for the ICC in The Hague, where they will be tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

I then imagine President Obama, recalling how he signed the Executive Order stripping Buch, Cheney, et al of all soverign immunities against extradition, smiles to himself and thinks: "Who's the bitch, now?"

Not at all. You wear a cup when you think something might be hitting you there at 100 mph. Not much chance of that in a bike race, and it'd get in the way.

Gravatarql, what a stitch, those fellas look like they had some special sewing to get more attention.

GravatarV4VA, there was a great Bill Moyers last night, with a discussion of the tactic of shutting out the real press because they won't parrot the admin line. and a hilarious exchange about the experts as proclaimed mostly by themselves, and all the things they got wrong. the film clips of admin. statements getting us into war is worth watching it for.

GravatarThis sounds right, from plantsman's link above:

All this actually tells us something about the Democratic candidates, which has nothing to do with fuel prices. Obama believes voters want a sensible, less-divisive political dialogue, that the whole process can become more honorable if the right candidate leads the way. Hillary really doesn’t buy that. She has principles, but she doesn’t believe in principled stands. She thinks that if she can get elected, she can do great things. And to get there, she’s prepared to do whatever. That certainly includes endorsing any number of meaningless-to-ridiculous ideas. (See: her bill to make it illegal to desecrate an American flag.)

Gravatarhey peeps

Not choosing is also a choice, you know.

But in the case of the BDs I suspect it's one of three things: 1. they were complicit in that they knew the maladministration/telecom alliance was up to No Good and didn't blow the whistle; 2. they are voting against their party to reduce the effectiveness of an election challenge, or 3. their pockets are being lined by Certain Interests.
