Hawks almost blew that game. WhyTF didn't they foul to prevent the 3?
A three only would have tied it. Plus, if the shooter wants to waste time at about 28 feet out (like the Celtic guard did), let him.

that crap happens a lot. phoenix should have fouled san antonio, leading by 3 with little time left in both regulation and the first ot, in game 1 of that series, and instead let san antonio shoot 2 3's which went in. sa won the game and the series.

Ask Memphis about that.
If Celts make the 3, overtime.
If Hawks foul, they're up 1, with possession, at the line with, maybe, 3 seconds.

Impeachment is unlikely at this late date, but to quote myself from a previous thread:
I comfort myself with this little fantasy.
It's January 20, 2009. President Obama has delivered his inaugural
speech, and has, it appears, in a spirit of unity, asked Bush, Cheney,
Rice, et al, to come to the White House with him.
As
Obama takes his seat behind the desk in the Oval Office, an aide hands
him a document, ("You'd think I'd at least have no paperwork today, right?") Bush smirks and nudges Cheney in the ribs. President Obama signs it, and hands it back. The aide leaves.
There is some small talk, and US Marshalls enter the Office.
They
place Bush, Cheney, et al, under arrest. Shortly thereafter, we see the following on
live TV, Bush, Cheney, et al, in bright orange coveralls, hand cuffs
and leg irons, being boarded onto a jet bound for the ICC in The Hague,
where they will be tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
I
then imagine President Obama, recalling how he signed the Executive
Order (right in front of all of them!) stripping Bush, Cheney, et al of all soverign immunities against
extradition, smiles to himself and thinks: "Who's the bitch, now?"

A way most of us can grind our own grain, is to abuse a coffee grinder with it. Just sift it through a screen between grinds. If you are worried about the bits being too crunchy make the bread with one of the slow rise methods, to give the small pieces of grain time to adsorb water. And make the dough ball a bit wetter than normal also to allow for this.

Break-ins plague targets of US Attorneys
Larisa Alexandrovna, Muriel Kane and Lindsay Beyerstein
MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA – In two states where US attorneys are already under fire for serious allegations of political prosecutions, seven people associated with three federal cases have experienced 10 suspicious incidents including break-ins and arson.
These crimes raise serious questions about possible use of deliberate intimidation tactics not only because of who the victims are and the already wide criticism of the prosecutions to begin with, but also because of the suspicious nature of each incident individually as well as the pattern collectively. Typically burglars do not break-into an office or private residence only to rummage through documents, for example, as is the case with most of the burglaries in these two federal cases.
In Alabama, for instance, the home of former Democratic Governor Don Siegelman was burglarized twice during the period of his first indictment. Nothing of value was taken, however, and according to the Siegelman family, the only items of interest to the burglars were the files in Siegelman's home office.
Siegelman's attorney experienced the same type of break-in at her office.
In neighboring Mississippi, a case brought against a trial lawyer and three judges raises even more disturbing questions. Of the four individuals in the same case, three of the US Attorney’s targets were the victims of crimes during their indictment or trial. This case, like that of Governor Siegelman, has been widely criticized as a politically motivated prosecution by a Bush US Attorney.
Everyone was wonderful. Kris looks to be about seven months pregnant and her usual adorableness has been transformed into radiance.

So our cluster munitions will still be fatal in 200 yrs?
CHESTER, Va. - Like many boys in the South, Sam White got hooked on the Civil War early, digging up rusting bullets and military buttons in the battle-scarred earth of his hometown.
As an adult, he crisscrossed the Virginia countryside in search of wartime relics — weapons, battle flags, even artillery shells buried in the red clay. He sometimes put on diving gear to feel for treasures hidden in the black muck of river bottoms.
But in February, White's hobby cost him his life: A cannonball he was restoring exploded, killing him in his driveway.
More than 140 years after Lee surrendered to Grant, the cannonball was still powerful enough to send a chunk of shrapnel through the front porch of a house a quarter-mile from White's home in this leafy Richmond suburb.
White's death shook the close-knit fraternity of relic collectors and raised concerns about the dangers of other Civil War munitions that lay buried beneath old battlefields. Explosives experts said the fatal blast defied extraordinary odds.

M'self, I think progressives expected that it would finally be their turn, and it's turning out that neither Dem candidate is going to be a genuine reformer.
There's virtue in small steps, but the reality is that Dems get a few small steps, and then the `pugs get back in, put on their seven-league boots, and take several giant steps backwards.
It's very frustrating. There are so many people wishing that the Dems would put on those same big boots and walk forward.

Obama has taken at least $263,000 from oil company executives, family members and employees since entering the presidential race last year, including $46,000 last month. At least $140,000 has come in chunks of between $1,000 and $2,300, the maximum permitted under federal law.

Democrats Okay Funds for Covert Ops
Secret Bush "Finding" Widens War on Iran
By Andrew Cockburn
02/05/08 "Counterpunch" -- - Six weeks ago, President Bush signed a secret finding authorizing a covert offensive against the Iranian regime that, according to those familiar with its contents, "unprecedented in its scope." Bush’s secret directive covers actions across a huge geographic area – from Lebanon to Afghanistan – but is also far more sweeping in the type of actions permitted under its guidelines – up to and including the assassination of targeted officials. This widened scope clears the way, for example, for full support for the military arm of Mujahedin-e Khalq, the cultish Iranian opposition group, despite its enduring position on the State Department's list of terrorist groups.
Similarly, covert funds can now flow without restriction to Jundullah, or "army of god," the militant Sunni group in Iranian Baluchistan – just across the Afghan border -- whose leader was featured not long ago on Dan Rather Reports cutting his brother in law's throat.
Other elements that will benefit from U.S. largesse and advice include Iranian Kurdish nationalists, as well the Ahwazi arabs of south west Iran. Further afield, operations against Iran's Hezbollah allies in Lebanon will be stepped up, along with efforts to destabilize the Syrian regime. All this costs money, which in turn must be authorized by Congress, or at least a by few witting members of the intelligence committees. That has not proved a problem. An initial outlay of $300 million to finance implementation of the finding has been swiftly approved with bipartisan support, apparently regardless of the unpopularity of the current war and the perilous condition of the U.S. economy.

CHARLESTON, SC—One of Bill Clinton's talking points this week is just how thick Hillary Clinton and John McCain are.
Today in Spartanburg, he described them as "very close." And the other night in Myrtle Beach, he called them "good friends," and said "they like each other." The topic seems to be coming up relatively often, and unprompted (not to mention that it's different than the attitude McCain has taken towards Clinton).

Armed Might of US Marred By Begging Bowl to Arabs
Sometime in the next two weeks, fleet radar operator may notice a blip on their screens that represents something rather more profound: America's growing financial weakness. The blip will be former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin's plane commencing its descent into Abu Dhabi. Rubin's responsibility these days is to help keep Citigroup afloat despite a balance sheet still waterlogged, despite frantic bail out efforts by the Federal Reserve and others, by staggering losses in mortgage bonds. The Abu Dhabi Sovereign Wealth Fund injected $7.5 billion last November (albeit at a sub-prime interest rate of eleven percent,) but the bank's urgent need for fresh capital persists, and Abu Dhabi is where the money is.
Even if those radar operators pay no attention to Mr. Rubin's flight, and the ironic contrast it illustrates between American military power and financial weakness, others will, and not just in Tehran. There's not much a finding can do about that.

Josh at TPM:
I'd also forgotten that back in September, when President Bush first rolled out the Korea model of the permanent occupation of Iraq which Sen. McCain (R) has now embraced as his platform, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office did a study of what a 50 year 'Korea model' presence in Iraq would cost.
The study was done with highly conservative estimates, figuring a much smaller contingent of troops, and basically all the best case scenario numbers, including everything being basically chill over there like McCain says it'll be.
They came up with an additional $2 trillion over 50 years.
Now, an interesting point of comparison is the projected shortfall in the Social Security budget, which is on the contrary tabulated on highly pessimistic assumption. That number over 75 years is projected at $4.7 trillion.
Now I hasten to add, again, that the Iraq numbers are highly optimistic and the Social Security ones highly pessimistic. If we do a simple back of the envelope calculation we get the 75 year cost of Iraq would be $3 trillion.
And remember that the Social Security number is the one that is supposed make the country curl up, collapsed in upon itself and supernova.
Hard I tells ya!!

SteveLG--
I think, even if Iraq goes away soon, the military budget will cause us to collapse. We're now spending (on just the advertised defense budget--there's lots more squirreled away for DoD in other parts of the budget) about five times a peacetime budget, and that doesn't include supplemental war expenditures.
That level of spending isn't sustainable, and we're reaching the cumulative effects of that spending posture now.
And, sadly, I don't see that situation changing anytime soon, no matter who's in the WH.

Switch to growing hemp instead of cutting down our forests and you get better paper and an alternative source of plastic. Jack up support for mass transit and tax the hell out of private transportation getting less than 15 MPG. Tax the people who are getting fat making money off of capital gains because that's not putting out any products. Tax companies moving money and jobs out of the country. Get the hell out of Iraq and Afghanstan and lament how badly we fucked up the whole region. Stop with the ethanol from corn and stop lying about how many people are out of work and what inflation really is. Because only after we do the hard things can we start to fix the mess.

For the combined Iraq/Afghanistan meatgrinder, the US military has granted over 100,000 permanent disability applications by vets. Over 300,000 report traumatic brain injury. And around 300,000 report suffering PTSD. This is out of 1.6 million total servicemen.

Best quote from yesterday.
I comfort myself with this little fantasy.
It's January 20, 2009. President Obama has delivered his inaugural speech, and has, it appears, in a spirit of unity, asked Bush, Cheney, Rice, et al, to come to the White House with him.
As Obama takes his seat behind the desk in the Oval Office, an aide hands him a document, Obama signs it, and hands it back. The aide leaves. There is some small talk, and US Marshalls enter the Office.
They place Bush, Cheney, et al, under arrest. Shortly thereafter, we see on live TV, Bush, Cheney, et al, in bright orange coveralls, hand cuffs and leg irons, being boarded onto a jet bound for the ICC in The Hague, where they will be tried for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
I then imagine President Obama, recalling how he signed the Executive Order stripping Buch, Cheney, et al of all soverign immunities against extradition, smiles to himself and thinks: "Who's the bitch, now?"

This sounds right, from plantsman's link above:
All this actually tells us something about the Democratic candidates, which has nothing to do with fuel prices. Obama believes voters want a sensible, less-divisive political dialogue, that the whole process can become more honorable if the right candidate leads the way. Hillary really doesn’t buy that. She has principles, but she doesn’t believe in principled stands. She thinks that if she can get elected, she can do great things. And to get there, she’s prepared to do whatever. That certainly includes endorsing any number of meaningless-to-ridiculous ideas. (See: her bill to make it illegal to desecrate an American flag.)
