The problem is in counting on Congress not to be panicked into giving the treasury a blank check.
If it is one thing that we know, this congress can be panicked into doing ANYTHING, and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will come out and try to put a cherry on top of this big shitpile and tell us its "good".
I am sure that the administration will get everything it wants, including the unprecedented authority to do whatever the hell it wants without any review by any court or administrative agency!!!!
I don't think we can count on this congress to look after our best interests. They certainly have done nothing to make anyone believe that they would do anything to look after the interests of the American people against this administration.

Duceppe wants high-speed train in Quebec
MONTREAL (CBC) - Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe called Saturday for a high-speed train between Quebec City and Montreal, and eventually on into Ontario and the United States.
The train would be good for the environment and create jobs, he said in Quebec City.
He called on the federal government to support the idea.
The premiers of Ontario and Quebec launched a study in January to look into the prospects for high-speed train links between major cities such as Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.
The federal government has agreed to participate in the study, the premiers said.

Luigi Zingales (via Brad deLong):
Forcing a debt-for-equity swap or a debt forgiveness would be no greater a violation of private property rights than a massive bailout, but it faces much stronger political opposition. The appeal of the Paulson solution is that it taxes the many and benefits the few. Since the many (we, the taxpayers) are dispersed, we cannot put up a good fight in Capitol Hill; while the financial industry is well represented at all the levels. It is enough to say that for 6 of the last 13 years, the Secretary of Treasury was a Goldman Sachs alumnus. But, as financial experts, this silence is also our responsibility. Just as it is difficult to find a doctor willing to testify against another doctor in a malpractice suit, no matter how egregious the case, finance experts in both political parties are too friendly to the industry they study and work in.

A poison pill? The executives who drove their banks into insolvency won't let the government save their banks if it means they have to give up multi-million dollar golden parachutes? After they've been paying themselves millions a year for the sheer incompetence necessary to bankrupt their companies? Did we step through the mirror and I didn't notice?
I can only read this as Paulson saying that Republicans will stop any bill that reigns in executive compensation in exchange for a bailout. Scary Sarah's not so excellent adventure:
Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is scheduled to meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai next week in New York, campaign officials for GOP nominee John McCain confirmed Saturday.
Karzai and other world leaders will convene in New York for the opening of the U.N. General Assembly. Both McCain and Palin planned to be in New York during that time, in part so McCain can introduce the Alaska governor to the foreign dignitaries assembled there.
McCain campaign officials said Palin may have meetings with other world leaders, but declined to say which ones.
The meeting comes as the campaign works to assure voters that Palin has sufficient understanding of foreign policy to be vice president. She's acknowledged having little experience in international affairs and got her first passport in 2007 to visit Alaska National Guard members serving in Kuwait and Germany.
Palin's meeting with Karzai was part of an effort by McCain's campaign to help her prepare for the interactions with international leaders she would have if she becomes vice president, campaign officials said.
Hari Sevugan, a spokesman for Democrat Barack Obama's campaign, said the GOP ticket would continue President Bush's foreign policy priorities.
"A few meetings at the U.N. won't change the fact that John McCain is promising four more years of the same cowboy diplomacy that has shredded our alliances and set back our ability to fight international terrorism," Sevugan said.

Democrats are drafting a joint House-Senate bill to expedite action on the Treasury Department’s $700 billion rescue plan for the financial markets but want the government to use its new leverage to slow foreclosures and cap compensation for the Wall Street chiefs whose companies are being bailed out.
There will be provisions as well in either the core bill or side deals asking the White House to accept new economic stimulus spending and bankruptcy court relief for homeowners, a legal issue long opposed by bankers yet now championed by leading Senate Democrats as well as Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
But House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) said he was prepared to move quickly next week in tandem with Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-Conn.). And Frank said he has assured Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke that he will publicly support them if they decide that they must take further ad hoc steps before the final package is completed.
“I called Ben and said, 'Just because I’m giving you a new gun, doesn’t mean I don’t want you to use the one in your holster,'” Frank told Politico.
Oh, fuck me. I should have gone back to work, as I said I was going to.
Frank will clearly add more to the dozen sections penned by Paulson’s legislative office and delivered to Capitol Hill early Saturday morning. How far he and fellow Democrats can go and not drive off Republican conservatives will be a critical question in the week ahead.
The Massachusetts Democrat said there is a strong sense that the government should use its leverage to prod investors to be more willing to write down mortgages rather than pursue foreclosures. The massive housing bill approved by Congress this summer held out the promise that the Federal Housing Administration could help a homeowner find government-insured refinancing and such write-downs. But the relief will never be realized unless the financing industry is more willing to come forward and negotiate reductions.
P.S.: Fuck Chuck.
“This crisis is very, very serious,” Schumer said. “It not only affects Wall Street but all of America — people with credit cards, auto loans, the whole economy.”

We know longer have a government in this country. The Executive Branch is committed to cleaning out the Treasury of the United States of America, nothing more. The courts have been stocked like a trout pond with ideologues who will back this up. And our legislative branch refuses to do anything to respond to this situation, or even to acknowledge the level of obvious malfeasance that is going on.
Jefferson once said he trembled for his country when he reflected that God is just.
Not me. I tremble for my country when I realize just how fundamentally misguided, shortsighted and dishonest are the human beings who have taken control of it.
I am for the first time in my life profoundly and fundamentally frightened. I was not frightened on 9/11. I am frightened now.

Gomez
A deal of some sort has to be made, doesn't it Gomez? (that's a real question, not a rhetorical one).
The question would seem to be who is going to bat to make sure the taxpayer dollars that are spent must be put to use in the "real" economy, that the taxpayer gets a share in any future profits those bailed-out may make, and that measures are taken to work out and reduce overall debt at the household level.
What do you think? This is related to what you do, innit? I'm just the wine dude.

I agree a no vote is required. Why does anyone thinnk the proposal of the same group that got us into this mess will do anything but iincrease our deficit? Antoher way, whty do we drive down this path when these folks drove us in the ditch?
The bases are laded for Barrack Obama and he needs to step up and hit it out of the park by saying no and leading the Congressional defeat any further bailout.
Main Street is ready to swallow the bitter pill, tighten their belt and get on with rebuilding a better system clean of all the bullshit failure that led us here and let the market take its course.
Now if only Obama shows he has a pair and promimses to lead us through this without any further bailouts. The opportunity is right before him, if he only seizes the moment. Fear is failure.

There are three ways to deal with mainstream media if one seeks truth and worthy social impact. Create alternatives that operate by entirely different norms. Krugman on his blog:
I hate to say this, but looking at the plan as leaked, I have to say no deal. Not unless Treasury explains, very clearly, why this is supposed to work, other than through having taxpayers pay premium prices for lousy assets.
As I posted earlier today, it seems all too likely that a “fair price” for mortgage-related assets will still leave much of the financial sector in trouble. And there’s nothing at all in the draft that says what happens next; although I do notice that there’s nothing in the plan requiring Treasury to pay a fair market price. So is the plan to pay premium prices to the most troubled institutions? Or is the hope that restoring liquidity will magically make the problem go away?
Here’s the thing: historically, financial system rescues have involved seizing the troubled institutions and guaranteeing their debts; only after that did the government try to repackage and sell their assets. The feds took over S&Ls first, protecting their depositors, then transferred their bad assets to the RTC. The Swedes took over troubled banks, again protecting their depositors, before transferring their assets to their equivalent institutions.
The Treasury plan, by contrast, looks like an attempt to restore confidence in the financial system — that is, convince creditors of troubled institutions that everything’s OK — simply by buying assets off these institutions. This will only work if the prices Treasury pays are much higher than current market prices; that, in turn, can only be true either if this is mainly a liquidity problem — which seems doubtful — or if Treasury is going to be paying a huge premium, in effect throwing taxpayers’ money at the financial world.
And there’s no quid pro quo here — nothing that gives taxpayers a stake in the upside, nothing that ensures that the money is used to stabilize the system rather than reward the undeserving.
I hope I’m wrong about this. But let me say it again: Treasury needs to explain why this is supposed to work — not try to panic Congress into giving it a blank check. Otherwise, no deal.

Here are my proposals:
First, create proper regulations for the financial markets. The free-marketeers have been telling us for decades that regulations are evil, that they suffocate the adventurous and creative spirit of the markets and that they shouldn't be enforced. And the government listened and stored these words in its heart (if it has one) and Phil Gramm made sure that the regulations no longer stifled anyone. Then of course a market which deals in fortune-telling and guesses and imperfect information and leveraging and pure adrenalin went crazy. Imagine, for a moment, what a baseball game would look like if the umpires were not allowed to say anything at all, and imagine then how the game would change ( would there be hired killers to shoot the pitchers of the other team?) and you can see why the stock market needs regulations (rules) and regulators (u umpires). Of course, the stock markets matter much more than baseball games, but you get the point.
Second, stop ignoring the anti-trust regulations. Stop letting one fish eat up all the other fish, stop that enormous bubble-fish taking over the whole market. There are several reasons for enforcing the anti-trust rules which we still have in the books. They range from the nastiness of having just one firm to buy from and the power this gives to that one firm to charge a lot to the present crisis where some firms are so large that we have to bail them out even when they don't deserve such a bailout at all. There are many different economic models, true, but none of them advocate monopolies or oligopolies in all the crucial industries, yet that's the way the Republicans have steered the markets.
Third, make sure that the bailing out doesn't reward those who are major culprits in causing the crisis. Make sure that the authors of the crisis get full credit for it (Phil Gramm, I'm looking at you), that all those conservative thinkers who created it get forever remembered for creating it.
It will not be possible to fix the crisis in a fair way, a way which would not punish the innocent or reward the guilty, and neither will it be possible to fix it without a lot of pain. But at least we can use the opportunity to make sure that future crises will take longer than a few decades to appear and we can make sure that those who advocated the relaxing of all the protective rules and regulations get that reputation eternally attached to their names.

They range from the nastiness of having just one firm to buy from and the power this gives to that one firm to charge a lot to the present crisis where some firms are so large that we have to bail them out even when they don't deserve such a bailout at all.
In short, we shouldn't allow any firm to become "too big to fail".

Imagine, for a moment, what a baseball game would look like if the umpires were not allowed to say anything at all, and imagine then how the game would change ( would there be hired killers to shoot the pitchers of the other team?) and you can see why the stock market needs regulations (rules) and regulators (u umpires).

Louis Proyect, The Unrepentant Marxist, closed his 1/2008 post on Obama's econ advisors, mostly Chicago Boys, with this:
Of course, they will eventually be disappointed in a Clinton presidency because her economic program and his are virtually identical. In considering the “differences” between the two, I am reminded of what Fred Halstead used to say when he was running for president on the Socialist Workers Party ticket exactly 40 years ago: “Whoever wins the election, the American people will end up the losers.”
I never believed any of this change bullshit anyway. I just wanted someone sane and not comp;etely blind to grab the wheel and jam on the brakes. If real change is a-comin', it's comin' long after I'm dead and gone.

The Treasury plan, by contrast, looks like an attempt to restore confidence in the financial system — that is, convince creditors of troubled institutions that everything’s OK — simply by buying assets off these institutions. This will only work if the prices Treasury pays are much higher than current market prices;

What we are witnessing may be the greatest destruction of financial wealth that the world has ever seen
-- paper losses measured in the trillions of dollars. Corporate wealth. Oil wealth. Real estate wealth.
Bank wealth. Private-equity wealth. Hedge fund wealth. Pension wealth. It's a painful reminder that,
when you strip away all the complexity and trappings from the magnificent new global infrastructure,
finance is still a confidence game -- and once the confidence goes, there's no telling when the selling will stop.
I'm reminded of all those idiots who "wanted to have a beer with Bush."
THIS is what happened when you elect a moron Republican instead of a smart Democrat.

Memo to Democrats: Stop being “bipartisan” wankers!
To Charles Schumer (D-NY): Stop referring to American citizens as "ordinary Americans" -- it's an insult!
Does Schumer mean "ordinary Americans" as opposed to those very "special Americans" on Wall Street who until quite recently were known as the "Masters of the Universe" -- titans and gladiator capitalists who were magnets for the "smart money"...as opposed to the dumb money that was supposed to "trickle down" to the rest of us?
To Barack Obama (D-IL): Stop referring to American citizens as "folks" -- you sound just like Bush! -- e.g. Obama's latest declaration from Daytona Beach:
We have to make sure it helps folks cope with rising prices, and sparks job creation, and helps homeowners stay in their homes. That’s the kind of help folks need right now.”
We are not "folks" -- and stop using that patronizing false dichotomy betseen "Wall Street" and "Main Street" -- it's nauseating and cloying and patronizing, to say the least. Would that be "Main Street" or "Skid Row"...for that last slide into the final frontier of oblivion?
To "Key Democratic lawmakers" in the House and Senate: Your 11th-hour bleating about the need to "move aggressively to help hundreds of thousands of troubled borrowers at risk of foreclosure" -- it's much too little and way too late. Where were you when those "hundreds of thousands of troubled borrowers" who are already victims of foreclosure really needed you? On vacation or on the take?
To Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer: Your aides said today that you were "reviewing the proposal" -- as if you weren't going to bend over and raise your big rubber stamps! -- a big-fat double "Fuck you!" to you both.
PS -- I called Barney Frank and Chris Dodd and Charles Schumer and Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer today -- along with own House member and two Senators... but they weren't taking my calls. I plan to call them again on Monday.

If we had just cut taxes on the people who are making millions per year a little more, none of this would have happened.
They would have created more jobs and wealth with their tax cuts than we would know what to do with.
Housing prices never would have dropped and all the money saved by the government could have gone to more support for the brave troops keeping us safe from the Islamofascist menace.
I blame liberals for all of this.
Sarah Palin is the only candidate ready to reform the liberal good old boy network of cronyism and blame America first surrender monkeys.
The democrat commies have spent other peoples money on transferring the wealth from hard working Americans to lazy liberal tax and spend creeping socialist gay loving abortionist illegal immigrants.
This is why GW Bush was right and we need Palin/McCain 08 to put Country First!

Actually, the McCain/Palin motto is the following:
Country Club First!
And the official record reflects that Sarah Palin routinely sucked old-boy network dick in Alaska -- you need to expand your reading list to include more fact-based news venues.
