I'MMA LET YOU FINISH

GravatarThankee kindlee, Avedon.

GravatarYou're all reading the post, I suppose.

Gravatar"They were just parroting the administration's nonsense."

said by Chafee re Dems, could so easily have referred to the press.

GravatarToo right, Ruth.

GravatarThat's a smart post, Ruth.

Gravatar"They were just parroting the administration's nonsense."

I didn't get that. Any blogger knew it was nonsense, I had to wonder "didn't DEMS know?"

GravatarAw, thanks, Avedon. You just made my day.

Wow!

You GO, girl!

(And that makes me just as happy as having our blog get a front page link.)

GravatarKuhl, Molly! Like you don't have enough going on!

GravatarFrom Valerie Plame's book, the one passage that will stay with me:

I could not get Powell's speech out of my head. I told myself that there were many individuals, way above my pay grade, who had broader access to the intelligence and perhaps higher clearances and theredor had a better, more informed knowledge about the genuine state of the Iraqis' suspected weapons programs and intent to use it. Perhaps someone had managed to recruit a source deep inside Saddam's innermost circle who was providing alarming evidence of his plans. The idea that my government, which I had served loyally for years, might be exaggerating a case for war was impossible to comprehend. Nothing made sense.

I have always thought that the Dems in congress were thinking the same thing.

GravatarWhat did Mr. Chafee say at the time all of this was going on?

Gravatarthks, all,
Avedon has ensured the entire Eschaton community is going to learn about gold in the New World destroying Spain's economy - hopefully making us all into geniuses on the U.S. economy! yay.

GravatarDiane,
Thanks! We keep saying "better Democrats, please," and Greenwald's link here proves it, so I guess it's time to put my money where my mouth is.

GravatarMolly, good on you.

I really expected this guy to be running this year. I hope he gets confirmed. Maybe I'll hit him up for a job.

Hey, they are good parade floats, plus they are wonderful for handing out lit and holding up signs at the polls.

GravatarLike you don't have enough going on!

There's that. But the babies won't be babies forever, and things will get less pressed.

Thers and I had a long talk about me taking the summer off (we usually teach summer classes, because it's extra monay) and doubling the size of the garden. Our income is secure, but not going as far as it did, and it may be that a solid source of frozen vegetables and eggs is worth more in the long run than a couple grand, which is what I'd be giving up.

Gravatarand it may be that a solid source of frozen vegetables and eggs is worth more in the long run than a couple grand, which is what I'd be giving up.

I tried to get it in there a third time, but my brain seems to be filled with some kind of fuzzy substance.

GravatarMolly, T-shirts with expletives deleted would be ideal kidwear, imho.

GravatarIt is hard to overestimate the healthy qualities of olives. Not only do they contain more than a hundred active ingredients, including the "beauty vitamins" A and E, but they lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. This high nutritional value enables one to quickly regain strength from stress and overwork-which are inevitable in the fast paced conditions of modern life. And what's more, by including just ten olives a day in your diet, you are 100% guaranteed of preventing stomach ulcers

GravatarMolly, now that my garden is up and running, it won't be too much of a hassle, even with my demanding job. I'll have two pretty full weekends early on-- one in April to get all the early stuff in, another the first weekend in June to get everything else in. Otherwise, I'll weed and such in the evenings, harvest as necessary. Then a couple of weekends in the fall to put everything to rest.

GravatarAnd if you have chicken poop to fire up the compost, you'll have dynamite food for heavy-feeding plants, too.

And a place to put the chicken poop.

For the duration of the summer, I can definitely get rid of any excess eggs at the farmer's market--they get 4-5 bucks a dozen there.

GravatarWhat I know about are the fats, at moment. Olive oil is rich in Omega-9 fatty acids, which like Omega-3 acids, are very beneficial. Most commercially extracted oils are heavy in omega-6 acids, which we get more of than we should. My doctor told me to use Only EV Olive Oil in salad dressing when he diagnosed me with diabetes.

GravatarAnd if you have chicken poop to fire up the compost, you'll have dynamite food for heavy-feeding plants, too.

GravatarDemagogues have been fearmongering and scapegoating their populations for centuries. Just as Bushboy and the Goopers stampeded the Dems & the press (like cattle) into supporting his insane war in Iraq.

You would think that after thousands of well known stampedes (WWI, Vietnam to name the most recent), some generation would get wise to this insidious and devastating ploy.

But it seems every generation has to learn the same gruesome lesson the hard way.

GravatarIf America had a government or a government that cared about it's people there would have been a massive attempt to jump-start a renewable energy industry with wind turbines, solar and every conceivable conservation technique imaginable.

Instead, we've had Bushboy & his Creep Veep, uber agents for the fossil fuel lobby, impersonating government "leaders."

GravatarWe have an assembly plant for Vestas wind here in Portland, but GE makes wind turbines in the States.

Gravatarv -- i know. it's such a friggin no brainer. but there is movement on the state level and that's very encouraging. it's the national leadership that has so miserably failed us at all levels. anyway, here's a cool article on green jobs:

'Green Collar' Jobs Seen As Prosperous
By BRIAN SKOLOFF – 7 hours ago

When 1,800 workers lost their jobs after a Maytag appliance factory and headquarters closed last year in the small town of Newton, Iowa, a wind turbine blade company saw opportunity — an available, skilled workforce in the middle of one of America's hardiest wind energy production regions.

TPI Composites Inc. is building a new plant there as the energy industry aims for a cleaner, more sustainable future. With proper incentives, thousands of "green-collar jobs" could be created, from ethanol production to wind turbines and solar panels, and all the maintenance and construction to support them, industry officials said.

TPI used to build boats, but switched to turbines in 2001 for the "major growth opportunity," said Steve Lockard, CEO of the Phoenix, Ariz.-based company. The idea, he said, is to "transform the workforce away from the Maytag-type jobs of the past into jobs that can withstand the test of time going forward."

However, advocates and executives say training is key to making sure the industry has enough skilled workers to make it into a real economic engine, and are pushing for more lucrative tax breaks, much like oil companies already receive, to make it profitable.

And so Microsoft will continue to grow and dominate until you can't pick up a cell phone or a computer without using one of their services.

The operative word in capitalism always seems to be "More," instead of "Enough!"

Gravatarplantsman,

I still believe that the future of cars in hydrogen. The problem is the making and distribution. I believe cars can be made to run on it now (as they can with propane)

If you have a limitless supply of clean electricity that solves the first problem. The second then becomes establishing fueling stations and safe ways of doing it.

Electric cars are all well and good but batteries are a bitch. They are heavy, bulky, and wear out creating tremendous land fill problems (if EVERYONE used them) Hydrogen IC engines would simply not pollute and would be very efficient.

GravatarDWD,

Hydrogen powered cars is a great idea. The problem is separating hydrogen out of the many compounds it is bonded to.

Currently the energy required to accomplish that exceeds the value of the energy produced by the isolated Hydrogen but with time and research that could change.

GravatarRudy: see my comment above re hydrogen.

GravatarIf you have a limitless supply of clean electricity that solves the first problem.

That's a very large IF.

I dunno, I know he's crazy and all, but I kind of agree with Kunstler on this. I don't want to argue with you, DWD, and it's certainly not a slam on small-town lifestyle (I support it!), but suburbanization (sprawling suburbs encircling large cities, not small rural towns) are hugh GHG emitters, and it really doesn't change much if you do away completely with GHG emissions from cars.

windmills are making a limited comeback too. read a cool article recently about homeowners who are setting them up as an additional energy source. there really is alot going on in terms of alternative energy r&d. just imagine what those wasted hundreds of billions could have done. makes you weep.

GravatarThe backlog for turbines from GE is 3 years.

they don't make RIDICULOUS profits off them, so they have no motivation to expand production...think of WWII: how tanks and planes were FLYING off prod. lines...we need that NOW for energy independence, a full and entire populace commitment

GravatarIt was Mayor Bloomberg who wanted to ban transfats in NYC restaurants. That alone could sink his campaign in much of the country.

I don't have a problem with banning transfats. They should be banned. They are a poison. They should never have been approved for human consumption to begin with.

But legislation ORDERING restaurant workers to refuse service to people who are obese -- which in itself is a subjective call -- is wrong on so many different levels. At the very least, it completely misunderstands the problem of obesity, as if it's all about people over eating.

And it's got that horrid, shaming and humiliation quality that the GOP just loves loves loves.

Yes but that's not what the centralized Big Energy people want to see happen. They lose control when we are able to generate our own electricity and sell the excess back. They'd rather keep control, the way Big Oil keeps control. Better to jerk us around the nose with and rob us blind.

Gravatarturbine plant in iowa:

West Branch plant slated to begin production of wind turbines soon
by Gregory Norfleet, West Branch Times · January 30, 2008

Surrounded by the gigantic parts that go into a wind turbine, Gov. Chet Culver and other area leaders on Thursday, Jan. 17, praised Acciona Energy not only for job creation and economic development, but also for helping offer more renewable energy to the world.

Acciona representatives, in turn, announced the newly opened West Branch plant would soon begin production of turbines that would generate twice the megawatts of those originally planned for the 200,000-square-foot facility.

And while leaders and company representatives repeatedly talked about continuing, mutually beneficial partnerships, Acciona then presented West Branch Mayor Sandy Hatfield with a $15,000 check for the city’s downtown enhancement effort as a sign of appreciation for the city’s support of the $23 million expansion of the former Sauer-Danfoss site.

Culver said, quoting anthropologist Margaret Mead, that one should “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.”

“I see that group of committed people right here,” he said. “This is just the tip of the turbine.”

The evidence, of course, shows exactly the opposite. They have made America far more vulnerable to domestic attack and they have blown the national debt sky high.

But then with the MSM not reporting this, how would Americans know a tree has fallen in the forest if they didn't hear it?

Vinton-Shellsburg to Harness Wind Power
By Josh Hinkle, Anchor/Reporter
Story Updated: Jan 30, 2008
VINTON - Vinton-Shellsburg School District could soon join ten other Iowa districts by harnessing wind power. It hopes the energy savings will pay off big for education there, because it now feels the squeeze of rapidly rising energy costs on its budget.

Superintendent Randy Braden is already pouring over the preliminary possibility of Vinton-Shellsburg becoming a one-turbine wind farm.

He says, "We estimate saving to be upwards between $80- and $100-thousand per year."

Two years ago, TV9 traveled to the Forest City School District in north central Iowa. That district constructed a wind turbine nearly a decade ago to power its own buildings, plus a string of houses.

Former Forest City Superintendent Dwight Pierson then said, “We call these ka-ching days when the wind's blowing 30 miles per hour."

Forest City's 600 kilowatt turbine saves the district about $50-thousand each year in energy costs. Vinton-Shellsburg is now considering a 900 kilowatt structure for an estimated savings of $80-thousand or a 15-hundred kilowatt tower to save about $100-thousand.

They are parasites, and there should be a parasite tax.

GravatarFT has an article on Dingell wanting to look in to the acquisition of 3Com.

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/ b2e588...00779fd2ac.html

The focus of the article is on the Chinese partner in the acquisition, Huawei, and 3Com's Federal contracts.

The other partner in the acquisition cooperating with Huawei? Bain Capital - which should ring a bell as Mittens' company.

:::Senior US lawmakers on Friday pledged to conduct their own investigation into the joint takeover of 3Com by Bain Capital and Huawei because of “genuine concern” about the Chinese equipment maker’s involvement in the transaction.

John Dingell, the powerful chairman of the House committee on energy and commerce, said in a letter to Treasury secretary Hank Paulson that he and a group of bipartisan legislators were concerned about the potential effect the deal would have on national security:::

It's true that wind turbines become like giant bird cuisinarts, and they are positioned in the exact places where birds fly. BUT I have also read that there are anti-bird chopping technologies that have largely solved this problem.

There's also a kind of wind turbine that is low to the ground, where birds don't fly. It's like a horizontal, not vertical turbine. Defies logic, but I read about it somewhere. Google it, as I've gotta hit the showers.

For proximate electrical generation, wind power is pretty good if you live on a site with enough wind, and the space to erect a wind generator. There are many people homebrewing their own generators. The only difficult thing to construct in my opinion is the wind vanes and there are many selling good ones for not that much.

Google 'axial wind generators' to find more info.

The personal computer group at IBM was hemorrhaging for a decade or so before they finally cut their losses.

and Lenovo loses the right to put the name IBM on their products or try to apply for Federal contracts.

Different kettle of fish from the 3Com deal, where Huawei is basically buying certain tech but mostly buying a brand name which has market access to items like Federal contracts, which would not be easily accessible under the Huawei brand name.

As long as Dems excuse their side, and Reps excuse their side, then no one is holding anyone accountable. That just makes the corporations more powerful--because they hold lawmakers accountable. When the corporations are the only ones holding these folks accountable, well, it doesn't take a genius to figure out whose agenda the lawmakers are going to be working on.
So, feel free to continue to make excuses for Hill. And argue that she's better than the other side. Yeah, she's better than Bush--but Bush isn't running.
Any antiwar Dem who votes for Hill, ignoring her part in this bloodletting, is no better than any Repub who held their nose and voted for Bush--simply because he was "their" candidate.
