This doesn't surprise me in the least. If we stopped giving subsidies to people buying Hummers, and retained the hybrid tax credit, I think you'd see a shift, even if people still buy larger vehicles. But most hybrids are smaller and significantly more efficient than my Escape, so I think we would see positive results.
Mostly this has to do with our short societal memory and those real gas prices which have declined until recently. So we're back to buying huge yachts when we should be more disciplined with smaller vehicles on average.
I decided to stick with a wagonish size because I'm going to be essentially living in my car once the house is sold, and I need to cart the dogz around. But it's still smaller than most SUVs and gets better mileage than my Outback. Compromise.
