Turns out that Ensign, Sanford and that idiot Coburn (the guy who was freaking about rampant lesbianism in jr high girls rooms) are all members of this secretive and highly financed crazy Christian totalitarian cult with a dorm on C-Street.
Right now the media won't touch the story with a barge pole, but I really think it needs to be flogged

"This characterization of something that began in 2001 and continued uninterrupted for eight years is just wrong. Honest men would question that characterization. It was more off and on," said a former top Bush administration official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the classified nature of the issue.
and
"They were looking for some political theater," said Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), a member of the intelligence panel. He said Panetta came into the meeting "with his hair on fire" but, after a question-and-answer session, the issue seemed less serious.
"That particular program never quite got there. It was turned off," Rogers said.
You gotta love the logic:
"You see, the CIA didn't say anything about the program to Congress, but because they weren't doing it 24/7, they didn't lie, and besides, it's okay because they've stopped."
(And besides, didn't Obama say we needed to get on with things and leave this stuff in the past. :mad
also
"The full committee was stunned," said Rep. Anna G. Eshoo (Calif.). Hey, hey! That's a MY girl! er That's a my Congresscritteress!

I'm in Chattanooga right now, and yesterday even a classic rock station was playing a Xian song. A pretty lame one, too. And the station was giving away tickets to Dollywood. This isn't even counting the eight gazillion country stations.

Obama campaign vow of public debate on health care fading
By David Lightman and Margaret Talev | McClatchy Newspapers
WASHINGTON — Campaigning for president, Barack Obama said repeatedly that any overhaul of the health care system should be negotiated publicly and televised for all to see. Throughout this year's negotiations, however, the big deals have been struck in secret.
We just saw "Up" last night in 3-D. It's sweet. What a tear-wrenching scene at the beginning though!

Loved that movie. Ed Asner rules. Also: the dog.
And I mentioned this at Box Office, the other day, but it's got a really orchestral terrific score (a rarity of late) by Michael Giacchino, the genius whose music for LOST contributes about sixty percent of that show's creepiness factor.

Josh has posted Rachel's great segment on Ensign, C-Street, and Coburn:
Blame Obama
Townhall.com ^ | July 10, 2009 | Linda Chavez
When will the failing U.S. economy become President Obama's problem? To date, the president seems immune to criticism of his handling of the economy, except from conservatives. Job losses continue to mount, despite his promises that his "stimulus" plan would create jobs and stop rising unemployment. The housing market shows no sign of imminent recovery, with prices continuing to decline and more homeowners falling behind on their payments. Retail sales fell again in June, with even value stores like Costco experiencing drops in sales. And the federal debt has risen under President Obama to its highest level as a percentage of gross domestic product since the U.S. was coping with the debt incurred in World War II.
The average citizen isn't as giddy and immature as you are, Ms. Chavez.
It will take Obama at least eight years to correct Dumbya's mistakes. After he does, he will be appointed President for Life.

The Red Queen, my gf, is currently in the Depths of Despair because (bear with me here) her ex-husband's replacement wife (over a decade now) is planning the 21st birthday party for their (the RQ and her ex) daughter.
All they asked is that we share the costs. Seemed fair to me, but the RQ is now Emotionally Devastated over not being asked to Lend a Hand. And that the Replacement Wife is now Devastated over the RQ's Devastation?
Did I mention that this party is tomorrow? And all of this bullshit got stirred up over a single phone call yesterday?
Argh. Do NOT need this. Do NOT WANT.

FWIW:
"... the only real, effective remedy for the abuse of national security intelligence apparatus is to permanently revoke the executive branch of government's authority with respect to deciding what to classify, the level of secrecy, the duration of that secrecy, and the authority to make redactions to declassified materials.
"There is no inherent right to the executive branch of the US government given for these current practices in Article II of the US Constitution, and to permit the continuance of executive authority in this matter will not invite disaster - because that is already what we have: a disaster. To fail to remove this authority from the executive branch of government will be to ratify this disaster, and to do so will be a usurpation of the rights accorded to the People under the Fourth, Ninth, and Tenth amendments.
"I do not think we need another secret court. I do not think we need to tweak the secret FISA court we already have. I think we need another constitutional amendment to involve a panel of citizens chosen at random annually or bi-annually, on which no citizen could remain for consecutive periods, to make the decisions about classification, declassification, and redaction. And I think that information once declassified should be forever immune to re-classification ..."
- From "Big Brother is Watching You - TALON Project Summary", http://thewall.civiblog.org/rsf/
...ons_on_you.html
Also (this is a bit more apropos, from later in the same article. It speaks to the need to remove both the executive and the legislative branches from classification decisions):
"The authority to classify, practice redaction, and declassify national security and intelligence information must be wrested from the executive branch, and legislative branches of government, and the People of the United States themselves must be given the determining role in making such decisions. For so long as no real removal of the influence of money in federal elections takes place, neither the executive nor the legislative branches of american government can be trusted, separately or together, to perform their constitutional duties.
History has amply shown the executive branch will abuse this power, and equally has shown the legislative branch unable and unwilling to excercise their own constitutional and statutory oversight responsibilities.
If the American People do not now take back their government from the corporate powers that have hijacked them, noone will do it for them. And all future generations will have those now living to blame."
Bottom line: This stuff won't be fixed until neither the executive nor the legislative branches have any say in national security classification issues. It's a defective design from a security / accountability / auditability standpoint. This role should vest in the Citizenry at large.
