Tweety just played a clip of Obama exhorting his audience to turn off the TV and make sure their kids do their homework, get to bed, and eat a good breakfast.
Tweety then asked Katrina Van den Heuval why Obama is pushing beourgeois (conservative) values. Katrina jumped all over him and said liberals want their kids to do well, so what makes that a conservative position?
Tweety said because it says people should take responsibility and not look to the government to solve their problems.
Tweety has no idea what it means to be a liberal. No wonder Carter was a one term president with this putz writing speeches for him.

Many of us -- well me -- are brow-beating Michael Scherer's middling effort at discussing John McCain's wanton ways with Reverend Hagge.
Okay, I lucked out and got to a new thread. I wasn't able to get to the thread where Drudge spilled the beans about Prince Harry.
I see how Atrios wasn't that upset, but frankly that should piss off all the right wing people who screamed about other papers "putting our troops in danger!"
I went and read how Drudge made accusations about Sidney Blumenthal and the lawsuit that went on for 4 years.
I talked to Sidney's mom about that during Yearly Kos. Great lady.

The fucker is trying to say that Hillary's ad is meant to scare white suburban women with the specter of a psychokiller/rapist/burglar at the door. And, of course, she's using the ad against a black man.

So what's this about Victoria Secret's top exec saying the store has become "too sexy"?
Assuming someone did say this, it could be
a) a clever way of advertising the place
b) true in the sense that most sexy underwear is bloody uncomfortable to wear and that they might be losing customers because of that
c) that "too sexy" means too brothely

newton, somewhat related: Public relations aims to break down reason and replace it with mental associations. One tries to associate "us" with good things and "them" with bad things. Thus, for example, the famous memo from Newt Gingrich's (then) organization GOPAC entitled "Language: A Key Mechanism of Control". It advised Republican candidates to associate themselves with words like "building", "dream", "freedom", "learn", "light", "preserve", "success", and "truth" while associating opponents with words like "bizarre", "decay", "ideological", "lie", "machine", "pathetic", and "traitors". The issue here is not whether these words are used at all; of course there do exist individual liberals that could be described using any of these words. The issue, rather, is a kind of cognitive surgery: systematically creating and destroying mental associations with little regard for truth. Note, in fact, that "truth" is one of the words that Gingrich advised appropriating in this fashion. Someone who thinks this way cannot even conceptualize truth.
We will infect the brutes with the plague of liberty.

Comparisons are odious -- all of the Beatles were surprisingly talented (yes, even Ringo) -- of course half of them were left-handed, so you would expect them to be gifted -- George was best at lifting the tune of "He's So Fine" & worst at getting caught doing it (still some awesome stuff on "All Things Must Pass")

In re the Beatles, my oldest (17) got the all Beatles soundtrack to some movie recently made that was, well, created to be all Beatles inspired and all according to their songs.
She, who has no clue about anything of their original appeal, is singing all thes and getting er friends into them too. And being amazed that i know all the words and can even explain some stuff (like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds).
that's the sign that they were really good. Future generations that weren't there for the first enthusiasm can still see the value.

I don't really care which candidate Edwards supports. I just hope he pushes the whole machine to the left on domestic policy, if he has the opportunity and ability. Foreign policy won't budge, I expect.
I think it's funny that some people who used to support Edwards say they can't support Clinton because of her AUMF vote.

the millenium of the year 1000.
mostly spanish manuscript illumination- dark red and orange and black book of revelation stuff.
inexplicably they also were showing delicate airy french miniature paintings on glass sitting just above the spanish nightmare images.

Trifecta I really enjoyed the Woot FAQ. I always appreciate a sense of humor in those.
This was a fun answer:
Q. Will I receive customer support like I'm used to?
No. Well, not really. If you buy something you don't end up liking or you have what marketing people call "buyer's remorse," sell it on eBay. It's likely you'll make money doing this and save everyone a hassle. If the item doesn't work, find out what you're doing wrong.Yes, we know you think the item is bad, but it's probably your fault.
i think the french on glass paintings were from the 1700s.

Tim Goeglein has loyally served President Bush for over seven years and worked tirelessly on his behalf to promote the President's policies. Among his contributions, Tim helped establish the President's Faith-Based and Community Initiative, and the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. He also played an important role in the confirmation of Supreme Court Justices Roberts and Alito.
Today, Tim accepted responsibility for the columns published under his name in his local newspaper, and has apologized for not upholding the standards expected by the President. The President was disappointed to learn of the matter, and he was saddened for Tim and his family. He has long appreciated Tim's service, and he knows him to be a good person who is committed to his country. President Bush accepted Tim's resignation today.

USDA Shuts Down Congressional Audit
February 28, 2008 - 6:25pm
By BEN EVANS
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Agriculture Department abruptly ordered congressional auditors to leave its Washington offices this week and told employees not to cooperate with them.
"You are hereby instructed not to meet with any member of the (Government Accountability Office) today, or until this matter is resolved," Michael Watts, head of the department's office of adjudication, wrote to employees Wednesday in an e-mail obtained by The Associated Press.
The auditors were seeking information for an ongoing review of Agriculture's civil rights office, including whether the department had provided false information about the office's progress in handling discrimination complaints.

Huh? My Ruth? Ruth in the morning, Ruth?
I just got home from work, signed on and see my friend is having problems. What on earth is going on?
PeasantParty
She keeps having this mysterious problem where she can't use her right hand. It just goes numb. The first time she thought it was a stroke, but there's no evidence that anything like that is going on. Now the doc suspects it might be a pinched nerve somewhere, so she's got it immobilized and isn't supposed to use it AT ALL for a week, which would be next Wednesday.

V for Virginia:
My dad passed away last week. Thank you for your note earlier. I think people understand this, but I want to reiterate that notes from folks really do help.
I've heard it said that people don't know what to say to people when they lose a loved one, or that they say dumb stuff. I've found the opposite to be true. Maybe it's because you are all such good people and the people who say stupid stuff aren't sending me notes, but I have to say that the people here have been very insightful with their comments. Even the little comments have meant a lot. I told my mom about a comment I got from a reader in France. "The whole world is noticing Daddy's passing and sending their best wishes"
She was pleased, especially since I bought him is first computer in 1997 when I was flush before the dot.com crash. He really got into it and it helped him with some of his future business deals.
I shared some people's comments with my siblings they were so wonderful.
I'm so proud to be a part of this lefty blogosphere, and was humbled by the outpouring of comfort from the good people in it.

LAURIE KELLMAN
AP News
Feb 29, 2008 19:22 EST
Attorney General Michael Mukasey refused Friday to refer the House's contempt citations against two of President Bush's top aides to a federal grand jury. Mukasey said White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former presidential counsel Harriet Miers committed no crime.
As promised, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she has given the Judiciary Committee authority to file a lawsuit against Bolten and Miers in federal court.
"The House shall do so promptly," she said in a statement.
Mukasey said Bolten and Miers were right in ignoring subpoenas to provide Congress with White House documents or testify about the firings of federal prosecutors.
"The department will not bring the congressional contempt citations before a grand jury or take any other action to prosecute Mr. Bolten or Ms. Miers," Mukasey wrote Pelosi.
Pelosi shot back that the aides can expect a lawsuit.
"The American people demand that we uphold the law," Pelosi said. "As public officials, we take an oath to uphold the Constitution and protect our system of checks and balances and our civil lawsuit seeks to do just that."
The suit had a political purpose too. Democrats have urged that the filing occur swiftly so that a judge might rule before the November elections, when all 435 House seats and a third of the Senate are up for grabs. Criticism of Bush's use of executive power is a key tenet of the Democrats' platform, from the presidential race on down.
The House voted two weeks ago to cite Bolten and Miers for contempt of Congress and seek a grand jury investigation. Most Republicans boycotted the vote.
Pelosi requested the grand jury investigation on Thursday and gave Mukasey a week to reply. She said the House would file a civil suit seeking enforcement of the contempt citations if federal prosecutors declined to seek misdemeanor charges against Bolten and Miers. The plaintiffs would be the entire Judiciary Committee, who would be represented by the House's lawyers, according to aides to Pelosi and committee Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich.

Later I created a spreadsheet data base to help with the thank you and donations. When I left we had over 250 names (a lot of them were Mr. and Mrs.)

McCain Rated As America’s Worst Senator For Children
Today, the Children’s Defense Fund Action Council released its 2007 Nonpartisan Congressional Scorecard. CDF reports some positive news, particularly that average scores for members of Congress “improved from the previous three years with more Members scoring 100 percent than in 2004, 2005 or 2006.”
Many, however, did not fare so well. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) received a 10 percent rating — the worst in the U.S. Senate.

The think that I love to point out to people who are all pro-torture is that what do you say to the people who got picked up and tortured by mistake?
Tuttle became Buttle and suffered for the 'crimes' of another man. In a world of imperfect humans, allowing for horrific punishments and torture shouldn't be the first resort, there are a lot more "Buttle/Tuttle's" out there than there are the fantasy: "This is the guy who know about the bomb and it will go off in 24 hours an if we don't torture him everyone will die!"

I'm so sorry about your loss. As RIL said there is no good time to lose a parent. It's tough.
I did hear about Daryl Pearce I went and wrote a note to his family under his obit in his local paper.
Here it is:
Dear Family and Friends of Darryl:
Darryl was part of our community at the blog Eschaton. Consider us his virtual campfire friends. He came and shared his stories and views with us and we were all enriched by the experience. He will be missed. I personally appreciate his support during a trying time in my life last year.
I want his family to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. My dad unexpected died on Feb. 18, 2008. I've found that the grief comes in waves, but I've also found that love and support will come from expected and unexpected places to help hold you. Our community very much wants to provide you with as much comfort and good wishes as we can express. We may be invisible to you, but we are real people behind these pixels on a screen and we are sending you our deepest sympathy during this difficult time. Connecting to people on the internet may seem new and different, but the human connection is real, and the oldest rules of human connection still apply. When a dear member of a community is missing we all grieve, but we remember his words so he will live on in our minds -- and now, because of the internet -- they are also captured in time and spread throughout our community threads.
My dad's community showed their appreciation by way of their presence at the funeral or through flowers, donations or cards. Since we are spread out around the world we couldn't be there to show you our support in person as the way to honor him, however I have read that many of us have sent notes or card and will be donating to Raise the Sails in his memory.
Take care,
Spocko

ah, so if enough americans polled high on, say, legalizing lynching, that would be okay, right?
Nope. But your assertion is that New Yorkers did not support Hillary's vote. Yet while 61% surveyed in 2006 said Iraq was a major issue, Hillary won re-election by a 3-1 margin.
So your point was what, exactly?

Having NTodd hate you is like having a really really pesky fly hate you, except the fly has lost its wings and legs so it just lays there on the windowsill and glares at you with those fucking compound eyes.

others did, but she took the cold and calculating step to further her career.
As did John Kerry. Who ran and lost (sort of).
Look, it's not working. I didn't support the war from the get-go.
I was a United States senator with presidential aspirations, so it was easy to do the right thing.
I know, baby. It sucks.

I'll be damned. My two nieces -- one of whom I haven't seen since she was a pre-schooler (divorce'll do that) -- are coming up to Chi on spring break & staying at the hostel downtown. They're about 18 or 19. The one called me up this evening -- we talk every once in a while -- and we had a nice long chat. She's been out to me for years, and she told me that she'd recently come out to her grandparents and surprised me by telling me that they came around after a while & they're okay with it. Then she surprised me some more & told me she'd dropped out of HS & got her GED. Then she surprised me some more & told me her cousin is gay too. Then she surprised me some more by telling me one of the things they plan to do on this trip is go get tattoos.
And what surprised me the most is that it's the tattoos that surprised me the most.
Jeez. I am a tame middle-aged suburban matron. I knew it would happen one of these days -- I guess it's official.
Would you please rephrase that?

I have to agree with you. I've been disappointed twice now. Edwards, 2004 and Edwards, 2008.
I'll support the primary winner, but damnit all it's a shame.

Uh, there are more international emergencies than just terrists that might mean getting the president up at 3AM. I mean, seriously.
Terrible natural disasters, coups in countries important to us, assassinations, US plane crash landing in North Korea....lots of things.
I actually didn't focus on terrists--but that's just me.

this is the reason hillary HAD to vote the way she did.
cite please?
sam | 02.29.08 - 8:19 pm | #
please let's remember that it was not, in fact, a vote to go to war. it was a vote to authorise bush to push for inspections, work with the u.n., and it mentioned military action if all other options were exhausted.
the plain fact is that hillary naively trusted bush to act honorably and follow the letter and spirit of the bill. she deserves to be criticised for being naive, using poor judgement, but she did not "vote to go to war"
"what's the difference?" you say? i say, if we are going to condemn somebody to hell, it behooves us to get the facts straight
Nope. But your assertion is that New Yorkers did not support Hillary's vote.

I've been thinking all day long about this Neocon dream. I really don't understand what they think they will do with a country they have broke in so many ways and weakened militarily.
Anybody? Does anybody have an idea of what it is they really intend?
PeasantParty
They think the multinationals they represnet will be able weather the storm and "bargain shop" before the economy recovers.

a bit of teh gay in my BIL family and the oldest of that family came out this year.
Everyone can catch her beautiful self on the April 4th showing of WHAT NOT TO WEAR because her Austin roomies got her onto that show and she is going to be on the teevee.
I guess it has nothing to do with her being gay. But she is young and only recently came out. And her taste/style in clothing is not from my side of the family!!!!

Nim and Jen alert:
Unfortunately, nothing. She's still at home. She's in pain, and she's frustrated as hell.
And...she didn't lose her mucous plug this morning. The real deal just came out.
Soooooohhh...
I will not be calling again until Nim calls me, once she's admitted. I promised to keep you all updated.
Sorry that I don't have anything exciting to report. I was really kind of hoping for a leap baby.

Using poor judgment. Then the other men did, too. Right?
Obama wasn't in the senate, so he gets a pass. Right again?
