that article is crap. not that i disagree re: people are putting the hate on when it comes to republicans. but people weren't overwhelmingly in support of any version of the giveaway/bailout because they wanted banks to get a lot of money in exchange for nothing. as usual, the wapo has absolutely no clue about what people outside the village are actually thinking. and what propaganda! no emphasis that the dems passed a bill in some ways worse than the one that the bushies initially proposed. people understand that too, as well as the fact that opening up the treasury to the rich and forming a perpetual hand-out machine isn't going to "make things better." krist i hate these people.

The risk is not for those that voted against the bailout. The risk is for any member of Congress that voted "yes". The market will crash before the election on Congress will be left holding themselves.
The public did not want the bailout. They will oice their distaste for those supporting the failure of a bailout at the polls and this bodes poorly for "yes" voting incumbent repubs and dems.

Hmmmm...note the word choice...
"Republican strategists fear that an outpouring of public anger generated by Congress's struggle to pass a rescue package..."
The selling is ongoing. Everyone I talk to at work still uses the term "bail-out."
It's too late to change that game, just as with Social Security, when they tried to re-purpose "private accounts" as "personal accounts."
It's not just Republicans, though, judging from the folks I talked to, but anyone who voted for the bail-out.

Y'know...actually...
I think the real reason people are mad at Republicans, would be the events themselves, which actually brought us to the bailout, rescue...investment bank subsidies...whatever you want to call this.
I mean...
The vote itself was largely opposed by more Republicans than Democrats.
My guess is the Democrats followed Barack Obama's support, which in large part would mean the same crowd advising him is the same crowd Paulson/Bernanke work with.
But the larger picture at hand, is simply the fact Democrats will clean-up in November.

Absolute bestest part of the story:
GOP operatives said the party's declining fortunes are rooted in a series of events over the past two weeks, including McCain's decision to suspend his campaign in order to help broker a deal on the rescue plan and Republican opposition that doomed the bill in a House vote on Monday. Those incidents helped reinforce voter impressions that Washington is broken and that Republicans bear the brunt of the blame, the party insiders said.

"Primarily this is because rulers of the exchange of mankind's goods have failed through their own stubbornness and their own incompetence, have admitted their failure, and have abdicated. Practices of the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men. True they have tried, but their efforts have been cast in the pattern of an outworn tradition. Faced by failure of credit they have proposed only the lending of more money. Stripped of the lure of profit by which to induce our people to follow their false leadership, they have resorted to exhortations, pleading tearfully for restored confidence....The money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our civilization. We may now restore that temple to the ancient truths. The measure of the restoration lies in the extent to which we apply social values more noble than mere monetary profit.

Why is that important?
When the heliosphere shrinks because the sun enters a rare sunspot cycle, cosmic radiation entering our atmosphere from distant supernovas increases and therefore interacts with low-level clouds, thereby increasing their reflectivity.
It's a lot like the high level clouds which have been known to reflect sunlight because of pollution from jet engine exhaust.
Well, cosmic radiation interacts with beryllium. That isotope can be measured with ice core samples. Scientists therefore can measure backs hundreds and hundreds of years to determine periods of extreme cold that correlate with written records in Europe.
For years, scientists have expressed worry at a cycle which seems to suggest either this 11 year sunspot cycle...or the next one...will possibly be one of those very, very rare periods of calm on the sun.
This will result in massive crop failures in the next 50 years.
It has nothing to do with pollution, which I have no idea will either contribute to the sunlight reflection, or help us with this environmental catastrophe.
That's the bad news. The good news is...Barack Obama will do what he says he's going to do...because he's honest.

Because McCain has nothing to offer this country, the full brunt of the ugly, negative attacks are on the way
Thursday, we posted this warning from Markos:
The GOP is desperate. Expect the worst of the worst to start hitting here soon. Jeremiah Wright is overdue for his second act, as well as Ayers, the Muslim crap, and anything else desperate Republicans can fabricate. At this point, they literally have nothing to lose.
As expected, the negative onslaught is on its way. This is round two for the McCain and his campaign. They spent July, August and early September in attack mode -- aided and abetted by smarmy tactics from State Republican parties and a slew of outside groups. But, from here on out, it's going to be nothing but negative, That is already true of McCain t.v. ads, which TPM Election Central reported are "Nearly 100 Percent Devoted To Attack Ads."
Today's Washington Post reports:
Sen. John McCain and his Republican allies are readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions about the Democrat's judgment, honesty and personal associations, several top Republicans said...."

I've been thinking about what to write about.
I really don't want to touch on yesterday's law being passed.
What I wanted to say...
...is more like my repetitive gripe against the philosophy of the Bush cabal.
I really think these people are over-playing their hand, atrios. If there's one thing I came away from in the last eight years, it's the fact these people don't seem to understand there's such a thing as "holding your cards" in the game.
Time and time again, these right-wing extremist reactionaries have sought to make change their top priority through whatever means was at their disposal, but in historical perspective...
...there have been times when if somebody had decided to "let sleeping dog lie"...we would have been far better off in the long run.
The devil may be in the details, but BushCo never saw the forest for the trees. I'm not sure if that's the right metaphor, but there's a biggger picture here.

The Great Wink Debate [Amy Holmes]
Byron's piece on Team Obama's wink spin is hilarious. So, all it takes to slay your opponent, charm your critics, and cheer your allies is a wink and a smile? Women of The Corner: Unite! From now until November 4th I propose that every female conservative pundette end each appearance with a quick wink and a flirty smile!
"You bet, Anderson!" (Wink!).
"Thank YOU, Bill." (Natch.)
"It was a pleasure, Sean." (Head toss.)
Between crinkled noses and shoulder shimmies, viewers will be helpless against our charms! Executives will swoon! MSNBC may actually go off of the air! “The next person that winks at me, I’m not sure I’m going to be able to take it after tonight,” says MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.
Why did we never think of this before? Ladies. You know what to do. Turn off your brains. Turn on the charm. Show off your gams. And when in doubt, just give 'em a wink. It's a killer.
Uh, the only person who jacked off to that wink was Rich Lowry.

This India pact with nuclear trade secrets is just one of those types of things.
I understand their desire to focus the Pakistan forces in this supression of tribal power in those remote villages, but are we carefully examining the way Russia and China patiently wait?
Are we not looking at how much influence Iran already has in Iraq, through our own mistakes from the very beginning?
20,000 Army troops are due to rotate out of Iraq for General Austin by the summer of 2009, so...it's going to be different after January with Barack.
Policy is going to be a lot different. Why all this rush to change our commanders with our Air Force nuclear arsenal before old party Democrats regain control of the Exective power?
Is this not what I'm used to? All of us?!
Don't we wonder aloud how these people fear a loss of power and money so much...they are willing to call their fellow Americans an enemy of the state?

Have Obama standing alone at the top of a hill. As he speaks Americans from all works of life step up to join him until a large crowd forms, some with flags, most with arms folded, all with somewhat angry fixed expressions...
John McCain wants to attack us, he wants to turn you against the hope of a better future, he wants to turn you against the change needed to rescue America from the Bush years he championed. Make no mistake: this is an attack on America's future. But it's not going to work. We are going to win this election and move this country forward at home and abroad..(some specifics).."

An American Carol is poised to destroy what remains of the careers of Kelsey Grammer, Jon Voight, James Woods and Dennis Hopper:
In the version of the film screened for this story, Gary Coleman camoed in said scene as a car-washing plantation slave who calls out to an off-camera colleague named Barack. When asked about the reference, Zucker, who co-wrote the film with Myrna Sokoloff and Lewis Friedman, revealed it will be left on the cutting room floor.
"It was the one thing I didn't think I could defend," said Zucker. "It's because of certain things that I know about Barack Obama. I would have left it in if he had really believed war was not the answer, but I've read that he said he was only against the Iraq war and he supports the Afghanistan war, unlike Michael Moore, who says he's against all wars."
Maybe his next flick can mock Jesus as an insufficiently patriotic peacenik.

I don't think McCain has the money to attack effectively. I haven't seen many of his ads lately in Florida. Obama is running at least 2-1.
In the statistics reported on DailyKos, Obama spent $3.1M on TV in Florida during the week ending September 30. McCain spent only $0.44M. By contrast, McCain spent $0.46M in CO, $0.49M in OH, and $0.94M in PA. McCain will have no choice but to triple or more his spending in FL, since that is the one state that he must have to win the election.

For Mr. Piccillo, 34, skepticism arrived with the Republican convention. After voting twice for George W. Bush, he said he was especially turned off when Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York mayor, mocked Mr. Obama’s early work as a community organizer.

This is one of the things that annoys me.
Most of us have other jobs and interests besides politics. That we seem to need to monitor closely those who are paid to be 'experts' on the subject says a lot. Some of the loss in US wealth could be attributed to this. The rest of us have to do the pundit's jobs.

Regardless of who wins the election, the collapse, reconstitution and rebirth of the Republican Party will be one of the top political stories for several years to come, and this column, presupposing that it exists, will cover it closely. As a pre-requisite, perhaps one needs to make the argument that such a crisis exists. One Republican strategist thinks the question smacks of the Democratic Party's circular firing squad circa 2002 - that is, four years later, the party was back in power and six years later, it has the chance to remake the electoral map for years to come.

Looking at the article from the Minneapolis Star Tribune that was linked above, part of the reason suspected for Franken's increased poll numbers is the overwhelmingly bad reaction to negative advertising. Many speculated that McCain would now turn his focus to Pennsylvania. But United Steelworkers International president Leo Gerard tells the Huffington Post that the state could soon go the way of Michigan.
"We're seeing -- from the several hundred of our people working every day, hand-billing at the plants -- the last two weeks have really been breaking Senator Obama's way," Gerard said over the phone from his office in Pittsburgh. "In particular, I think folks are sort of not taking John McCain as serious as they were, when they see his vacillation last week. 'I'm not going to debate. When I was married, my b-i-l and his wife had a baby with Down Syndrome. Geno never cried. His case is more severe than most; he's autistic and will never be able to function on his own. Regardless, that is typical of Down babies.

Chris sez this about Palin: "...endeared her to not only conservative opinion makers but the rank and file GOPers who will play an outsized role in picking the next nominee of the party in 2012 if McCain comes up short in 32 days time."
McCain just isn't sexy enough for his party, I guess.
So Chris wants to run that dixie-doodle drumstick dimwit, Palin for Preznut in 2012!! Palin's entire campaign can be summed up with "howdy boys"! Why not just run Ann Coulter and get it over with. The rich feeding on the poor. Most of the approaches proposed/adopted are wrong, and average Joe received the stick on the way up, on the way down, and now at the bottom.
For instance, there is something fishy in this credit crisis. Mortgages are supposedly the reason why banking institutions are down. Further it is typically stated that they are worth only 20 to 30 cents on the dollar.
If this were really true, I (and many others I am sure) would love to buy back my personal mortgage which is supposedly trading/worth right now somewhere in the area of 20-30 cents on the dollar. I would even like to buy the mortgages of others.
But they will tell you NO NO NO!
For more information, the truth, and to nail the rich at their own game, MUST READ follows
