GWPDA, nice info below on the history of Canadian healtcare programs. I remember back when Bill and Hillary were trying to get health insurance reform though back in the early 90's that our vaunted free press found it almost impossible to report clearly on the Canadian system.
Everything was anecdotal, mostly second and third hand--somehow it was impossible to find real facts or statistics or even real Canadians who could talk about their real experiences with the system.
Canada was so difficult to cover! So far away! The language difficulties! How could reporters for huge US papers do real reporting under such difficult, even impossilbe, circumstances.
Canada is like Rhode Island. Ya don't think it really counts.

Re heathcare. As the spouse of a family practice physician, I have one observation:
Any effective reform of the health care system is going to make both the insurance companies and the specialists very unhappy.
This is a good and necessary thing, but there has to be a plan to deal with their pushback from the get-go.
Any plan that does not make the insurance companies and specialists very unhappy will not be what we need.
That is all.

'm not sure that really fits--but it seems lots of us here feel we don't know what his "change" means. Since what we do know is that his stands are pretty much like Hillary's, perhaps a bit more to the right on some things like SocSec and homosexuals, perhaps to the left (but I don't know which--on leaving Iraq? no), he is the candidate of "hope" and "change." Voters get to fill in the blanks.

Compared to what? Is it really your contention that Obama has been substantially less concrete than Hillary/Edwards on issues?
Here is Obama on Iraq from his web site: Bring Our Troops Home: Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. Obama will make it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq. He will keep some troops in Iraq to protect our embassy and diplomats; if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes on al Qaeda

Bobo and Tweety both pushing The Bradley Effect big time--those racist NH voters! And those stupid women with HS educations voting for Hillary--in order to tell the MCMers that it's too early for them to call her run for the presidency over! Uh, Bobo, that's pretty strategic thinking, dood, for those stupid less-well educated women....
Anyway, I think stirring up a racial divide within the Democratic Party is a Rove wetdream. They see a way to do now. And it takes the assistance of MCMers like Tweets and Bobo and the rest trying to ignore factual analysis and go for creating a new Conventional Wisdom. It may or may not be easier than asserting that Al Gore lied by saying he created the Internet--but it's what they're working on.
If this were about a favored ReThug, the MCMers would be pulling out all the facts necessary to undermine a possilby false conclusion. Not happening now--they're not trotting out the dissenting pollsters and their analysis. They're going with the narrative: racist Dem voters.

Specialists do some good things indeed. But the balance of specialists to primary care physicians in this country is totally out of whack. And its getting worse, because they have gamed the insurance reimbursement system so that their reimbursement is much greater than those providing primary care.
They pay my generalist $60 for a 30 min visit and my ENT $400 for a 10 min visit, because he uses a fiber optic gizmo to look at my vocal chords for 30 seconds.
Students graduating from med school with enormous debt loads can't afford to go into primary care.

I am pretty confident we're going to get it here at last this time. The Republicans have now basically given us a couple of decades of relative isolationism, a real focus on environment and renewable energy, and a national halthcare system, albeit at the staggering cost of bankrupting our treasury and severely eroding our global economic and ideological dominance. It really sucks that it took them fucking up the country this bad to get us to this.

If this is actually a glitch on my end, I withdraw my complaint. But it's simels-irksome to refresh and then have to retrace. It seems to defeat the purpose; it's like a Sharper Image electronic bookmark that automatically hops back a random number of pages after it's inserted.
