A McCain victory in SC has to be good news for Giuliani because the narrative becomes "Stop McCain!" and Rudy's best poised to do that - not just because his numbers in Florida haven't yet collapsed to the same undetectable levels as they have everywhere else, but because Huck and Mitt and Fred will be fairly proven failures at the "Stop McCain" game. So, if stopping him's your priority, then Rudy's the one-stop shop after everyone's stopped shopping around. He'll be the last ABM (Anyone-But-McCain) in with a shot.
So says Lieberman hero Mark Steyn.

Here are my salt experiences. First this alien tried to suck the salt of of me.
Wait that that's in the future.
I bake and cook with kosher salt.
When I make bread I use french sea salt because the book Cookwise and some of the bread baking books I read they talk about how the trace minerals in the salt make a difference to the flavor and crumb of the bread. It's part of a complex balance.
I use smoked salt sometimes in soups and on steaks that I grill.

Here's some salt I want to try:
Fleur de Sel
Other Names: Flower of Salt, Flor De Sal (Portuguese)
Fleur de Sel (flower of salt) is the premier condiment salt. This artisan sea salt is comprised of "young" crystals that form naturally on the surface of salt evaporation ponds. They are hand harvested under specific weather conditions by traditional "Paludiers" (salt farmers). True Fleur de Sel comes from the Guérande region of France. Like fine wine regions, different areas within Guérande produce salts with their own unique flavors and aroma profiles. Uses: Ideal for salads, cooked fresh vegetables and grilled meats.
Perfect for the latte-swilling liberal elitist!

Iraqi authorities said at least 36 people were reported killed in Basra, Iraq’s second largest city, and at least 32 in Nasiriyah, including Iraqi security forces, civilians and gunmen. At least 10 people were reported slain in Nasiriyah Friday.
There was also “a deadly bombing in northern Iraq.” The AP describes the violence of the past two days as part of “a series of recent high-profile attacks” that are “eroding the security gains of the previous six months.”

Why were evangelicals voting for Fred? He lobbied for pro-choice groups in the 90s didn't he?
They think he's "electable," more so than Hucksterbee, and they also think he's a shtrict conshtructionisht.
They're pragmatic.

So here's one take on iodine:
'Symptoms of Iodine or Thyroid Deficiency
Do you have any of these symptoms? Brittle nails, cold hands and feet, cold intolerance, depression, difficulty swallowing, dry skin, dry hair or hair loss, fatigue, high cholesterol, hoarseness, infertility, lethargy, menstrual irregularities, early menopause, poor memory or concentration, slower heartbeat, throat pain, or weight gain. Or more serious diseases: thyroid dysfunction, fibrocystic breast disease, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, or prostate cancer? Does your child have any of these symptoms? Developmental delays (ADD, PDD, LD), mental retardation, or Downs Syndrome. If so, iodine deficiency or hypothyroid could be the cause.'

---------
At the wild yeast store. It's a product of China. Distributed by ConAgra.
I keed. I keed.
In SF you just leave your sponge out. That is how the first sourdough were made, with wild yeast. I have to say that my sough dough attempts were just okay. One great batch then I couldn't keep the starter going. It also seemed wasteful since you have to feed it and throw away the excess.

I'd like to build a fence around him and his fellow haters:
"Republican Duncan Hunter, a conservative California congressman, said on Saturday he would end his long-shot presidential bid after he failed to make any headway in a chaotic White House race.
Hunter, who had backed a border fence and a crackdown on illegal immigration as well as a strong military, said the race had been worthwhile despite finishing far out of the running in all of the early contests, including South Carolina and Nevada on Saturday.
"The failure of our campaign to gain traction is mine and mine alone," Hunter said in a statement. "But we have driven the issues of national security, the border fence, the emergence of China and the need to reverse bad trade policy."
He said he would return to Congress and work on immigration policy.
"Over the next year in Congress I will do everything in my power to get that fence built," he said."

Pullout of Iraq followed by total reconsideration of organization, setup of a true Staff like every other siginficant military has (this is what prompted the famous German quote, shrined on the wall of every admin office, that there is no order to the American military) and a nice brutal night of long knives for arms contractors who have come to see the American military as an ATM and who enjoy totally inappropriate influence.

Balckwater redux
"Moore, 43, a Chicago businessman, now presents himself as a former U.S. Army Intelligence officer and business "visionary" who revolutionized the private security market but an Army spokesman said Moore was never an officer and never had intelligence training. Moore, fired by Triple Canopy in 2004, has launched a new private security firm called Sovereign Deed. He has parlayed his Triple Canopy success into political influence, persuading Republican and Democratic state officials to rewrite state law so that Sovereign Deed can receive $10 million in tax abatements and other incentives to establish a "national response center" for its private disaster relief business in northern Michigan"

Good Morning! Tell us your dreams!
Last night I had two dreams. One of them involved a group of us showing up in Australia and needing to get back to the US in a hurry. They loaded us in to a space shuttle and launched us. I was given the command seat because I told them. 'I went to Space Camp."
I got the face mask with oxygen and the communicator.
We took off went suborbital then came down in LA were refueled to go up again. The refueling spot? Disneyland.
(a part that most people don't see, it was "back stage" and they had a massive sand scuplture of Mickey that was white on white.
We almost didn't leave on time because I coldn't get the oxygen in my nose and the rest of the 8 people didn't get into their seats. I kept shouting,
"Sit down!"

The Nevada Democratic Party has spoken -- per MSNBC -- and guess what?
The Nation and the AP right! Obama DID get the most delegates:
But hold on, folks. The Nevada Democratic Party just issued this clarification (emphasis is ours): "No national convention delegates were awarded. That said, if the delegate preferences remain unchanged between now and April 2008, the calculations of national convention delegates being circulated by the Associated Press are correct. We look forward to our county and state conventions where we will choose the delegates for the nominee that Nevadans support."
What does this mean? It looks like the Obama camp's math (as well as the AP's and NBC's) is correct.

I've got a candidate who loves her some Lieberman and I've got another candidate who loves him some Reagan. Great. Will someone please show me a real damn Democrat in this group? Having been a Democrat all my life there will never be a circumstance where I will ever vote for a Republican. So I'll vote for the Dem nominee in the general. But damn if I can understand how the hell rank and file Democrats can vote for them some luke warm Democrats who never met a GOP talking point and an issue frame they didn't like.
Crap.

RedState sticks a fork in Fred:
http://redstate.com/stories/
elec...g_but_a_whimper
Not with a bang, but a whimper
So long, Fred; we hardly even knew ye.
Well, that's not entirely accurate -- we knew you far better than we've known many a politician who's thrown his hat in the Presidential ring in years past (or even this year; see "Hunter, Duncan" or "Gravel, Mike" for examples).
We knew you well enough that, when it seemed that the Republican field needed a White Knight to ride in on a shiny steed and save it (and us) from itself, we didn't call on Newt Gingrich or Jeb Bush; we called on you.
...
What if you had entered the race in the spring or early summer, when your popularity and support were at their highest? What if you had picked a competent campaign staff at the beginning of the race -- and stuck with it throughout? What if you had really taken ownership of that campaign, and executed it more effectively? What if you had done what we were all dying to see after seven years of President Bush and the "new tone," and refused to let the media define you?
What if you had acted like you actually wanted the job?
So, Fred Dalton Thompson, as you ride slowly and quietly off into the sunset, not a hollow man but -- most unfortunately -- the owner of one of the most hollow campaigns that I can recall, the words of T.S. Eliot come to mind:

...if the delegate preferences remain unchanged between now and April 2008, the calculations of national convention delegates being circulated by the Associated Press are correct.
But they won't remain unchanged.
Via D-Day at Digby's:
I just spoke with Jill Derby, the head of the Nevada State Democratic Party. Regarding the Obama claim that he'll actually get more delegates out of this, essentially that's spin. Derby said that the caucuses are an "expression of the support of Nevadans today." Around 11,000 delegates were elected today. That will be winnowed down at county conventions and eventually at the state convention in May to the 25 that will go to Denver for the DNC. In 2004, Kerry didn't win every delegate on Election Day, but most of the delegates that eventually went to the DNC were his. Once there's a presumptive nominee, the delegate numbers are subject to change. It's non-binding.

I just read a really fun SF story called
"The accidental Time Machine" by Joe Haldeman. I'm a sucker for time travel books. This one started great and was a really quick read. My favorite part is the whole "person plucked out of time, how do you survive?" The gimmick in this book is the time machine he accidental creates only jumps forward in time in leaps that get longer and longer.
I read it straight through in a few hours. It was only 236 pages.

Oh my goodness Ellroon. That is funny. You of course would remember that is one of my favorite songs. Someone here kindly sent me a copy of the movie version with Stubby Kaye singing that song.
I have been actively trying to focus my thinking on positive things.
I came across two great book the other day that really struck me.
I wonder if anyone hear have read them.
The Paranoia Switch: How Terror Rewires Our Brains and Reshapes Our Behavior--and How We Can Reclaim Our Courage and The Myth of Sanity: Divided Consciousness and the Promise of Awareness
The Myth of Sanity: Divided Consciousness and the Promise of Awareness by Martha Stout
both by Martha Stout.
I REALLY found the Paranoia Switch compelling. I believe that the talk radio hosts and politicians with their fear talk after 9/11 have keep the anxiety level going to the point where it reconfigures your brain patterns, Stout basically confirms my premise.
I think I might call her and do an interview after I finish the book.
I'm also reading Athenae's book "It doesn't End with Us. The Story of the Daily Cardinal" it's about the heart of journalism as told from the point of view of a college news paper.

A friend was talking the other day about how she enjoys watching the messaging in politics and the back and forth. I said that I found it painful to watch because there is so much platitude talking. She is a old time republican so to her it is still a game. I feel like the consequences are just to important for tennis match games with the economy, our aggressive military posture and our freedom.
I like BOTH inspirational stuff AND wonk stuff. I also like it when someone articulates a philosophy. I would enjoy it if someone would attack the failed philosophies of the right more often. But of course when they do it gives the right wing noise machine their talking points for the next 23 years.

Well I saw "Cloverfield" tonight.
The movie belongs in the theater. See it while it is there. It will lose a lot to the small screen.
It is a point of view film. The jerky camera can get annoying, but when you hear the booms of the ammo and the roar of the monster you forget it. I could not take my eyes off the screen.
It has an idiot plot. It is not a perfect film and will not win the Oscar. But it is very entertaining. Younger people will like it more.
Four out of five stars.

then we can all listen to graduates of Regent and Liberty U., on leaving NASA and the Justice Department, complain about how the Democrats are politicizing the Civli Service.
You know, I think a lot about how might we make it so that the route to the think tank isn't the easy profitable step.
If the people DO get subpoenaed and hearings and they DO become known for their law breaking I'd like that to make them unemployable.
Mean on my part? Maybe. But what is the incentive to do the right thing if you get away with it and then get a better cushy job afterward.
I'm thinking about what we can do to make the think tank positions and the think tanks in general cough up some blood. Especially since they have hired so many with blood on their hands.
Prehaps like the Southern Poverty Law center we can figure out a way to make hiring the Rumsfeld's and Douglas Feith's something that doesn't help the think tank but hurts it.

So here's a good story about entrepreneurial medicine:
The treatment is called high-intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU (pronounced HIGH-foo). And instead of using surgery or radiation, it attacks the cancerous tissue by heating the prostate to temperatures near boiling...
Tropical beaches aside, there is a reason that hundreds of American men have traveled out of the country to receive HIFU. It is not approved in the United States. And its growing popularity has some cancer experts voicing caution. They argue that there is not yet enough evidence that the treatment stops cancer over the long run and they say the side effects are not as minimal as described by US HIFU, the company sponsoring the offshore treatment weekends.
The company is attracting attention for its aggressive recruitment of American doctors who will go through training and perform the treatments. The company charges patients $25,000 to $30,000, a fee that is usually not reimbursed by insurance. Of that, the company pays the doctors $5,000 to $7,500 — several times what physicians earn for conventional prostate cancer procedures in the United States.
Critics worry that financial motives might influence medical decisions.

You know I have a LOTS of ideas how to mess with the think tanks and the people they employee.
The student's protesting about the Hoover Institute are suing old fashion tools and methods.
I'd use the stuff from Center for Media and Democracy and target some especially egregious fellows and do to them what they do to decent intellectuals. And the methods would be designed not just to discredit them but to bring up real experts.
Not all experts are created equal. A well trained media savvy think tanker on the right will beat out the journalist who is supposed to represent the "middle and the left" (but who shouldn't be there representing either) the occasional left wing professor who they bring off of some campus to give his non-TV ready sound bites.

What a weird life for a guy. Married to a women with a degree who travels the country telling other women to stay home and raise kids. How do they reconcile the discrepancy in their own marriages?
Maybe having maids to clean the house and nannies to raise the kids and getting laid every once in a while when their wife is actually home is enough for them. *shudder*
Then again, those repugs do seem to have rather active sex lives without their spouses, don't they?

Okay, I did my good deed for the month of January and went over to LGFootballs to see what's up with the wingnuts. They are not happy about McCain because of his "amnesty" for illegal aliens and the "unconstitutional" McCain-Feingold Act. One poster will stay home if Rudy is the nominee.
Though there is a posting on McCain's win there's nothing posted on Hillary's. Prob just as well as if they had ugly comments about her I'd probably get angry and never get to sleep tonight. She's not my first choice but I'm sick of all the misogynists bashing her.

Every once in awhile, MY Ex calls my son on his cell phone. Most of the time, Steve won't even pick up; he just declines the call.
The story I've been hearing of late is that he's in terrible pain and has to go to Pain Management sessions.
Supposedly, a couple of the vertebra in his neck are compressed. I say "supposedly" because he lies SO much and is such a hypochondriac, that I don't believe half of what he says. I wouldn't be surprised if he was telling my son this little tale of woe for sympathy. He always did believe that the world should revolve around him.
How would HE hurt his neck/back? Certainly not from any hard work. He's on partial disability now and he has a thousand different excuses for missing work (some things never change) - he's short of breath (being 50-75 lbs. overweight and smoking like a chimney WILL do that), he's in pain, etc. etc. etc. He's living in a one room apartment that he's behind in his rent on (the rent's gone from $625 to $900-something since 2003 when he moved in there).
Anyway, he supposedly was in the hospital a couple of weeks back - having pins put in his neck. If that doesn't work, he'll have to have surgery that has a "30-50% chance" of leaving him paralyzed.
Hey, I don't wish for that to happen -- if you wish bad things like that on someone it has a way of coming back on you -- but do I feel bad about his problems?
No, I can't. He caused me and my kids SO much pain that I feel that these problems (if they're not BS or his imagination) are everything he did to us back in 1998 and 1999 ago coming back on him.
What goes around comes around. Yeah, it does.

Where does Ted kennedy, who in essence chose the campaign director for Kerry's horrid effort, get any right to tell Clinton about campaiging for his wife?
Look Ted, we know you want to boost Obama, Kerry giving him an endorsement was proof of who your circle of influence backs.
None of the Democratic President lived long enough to be spokesmen for thew party.
Carter really isn't considered a great speaker for campaigns, but he's an amzing NGO and issues voice now.
That's quite a reach to ask Clinton to shut up. Okay then, how about not appearing at the convention to endorse whoever runs if Hillary isn't on the ticket?
None of the other speakers could account for the same ability threshold that Bill Clinton brings.

Well... they certainly took us for a ride for seven long years. The rest of the world has been wondering how so many of us couldn't see what was happening right in front of our eyes. We need trials. We need justice. So when Pelosi said that impeachment is off the table, I felt like it was Ford pardoning Nixon all over again. We need to see that these criminals learn their lesson.
Or, if they refuse to learn their lesson, make it really clear to the future little neocons that breaking the law sucks.

The scales are not the same as they were when I was a kid. It always seemed like retirees were passing away in the mid 60s to 70s. Now, 80+ is more common to me. And 50 and 60 somethings look a lot younger.

Prominent Democrats are upset with the aggressive role that Bill Clinton is playing in the 2008 campaign, a role they believe is inappropriate for a former president and the titular head of the Democratic Party. In recent weeks, Sen. Edward Kennedy and Rep. Rahm Emanuel, both currently neutral in the Democratic contest, have told their old friend heatedly on the phone that he needs to change his tone and stop attacking Sen. Barack Obama, according to two sources familiar with the conversations who asked for anonymity because of their sensitive nature. Clinton, Kennedy and Emanuel all declined to comment.

The "wearing out" part was pretty quick in both cases. My grandfather was quite active until the last few weeks, when he went into the hospital and didn't come out. My grandmother continued to live on her own (she had a woman that came in several times a week to clean and run errands) until the last six months, when she moved into an assisted-living place. When she finally went, it was pretty quick.

A couple of days ago, one of the anti-Hitlery Kossacks was foaming at the mouth in a diary over the "selling out" to the Clintoris by Susan Hu and Larry Johnson.
Hu is an old, old Kossack who has done a shitload of work at Kosopedia, and Johnson, of course, is the former CIA colleague of Valerie Plame. They are now "unmutual."
Talk about your scorched earth policy. What the fuck is this so-called "reality-based" "community" going to do after the primaries? I've never been a big Orange Satan fan, but I'm frankly shocked at the way they are so quickly melting down into complete irrelevance.

I was at home, watching TV like nearly everybody else. Unlike nearly everybody else, however, I had no moment of great patriotic awakening or a burning desire to hang flags from every porch and car-radio antenna I saw. The attacks on the World Trade Center were the chickens coming home to roost after decades of Republican interference, neglect and incompetence in American foreign policy. How long do we, as a country, think we can get away with bullying and brutalizing other countries, slaughtering their citizens for the good of American "interests" (read: corporate profits), and supporting sadistic dictators as long as they toe the American line?
We've already killed more Afghans than died in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, and the people responsible for that attack are still nowhere to be found. Now, based only on the desire of our unelected "president" to avenge his daddy's mistakes in a previous administration (and, by coincidence, guarantee huge profits for his Cabinet, cronies and family members), we are about to embark on another "lovely little war" that all of our allies and most of our own citizens are dead set against. The lessons are these: As ye sow, so shall ye reap, and, those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. God help us, every one.

So, let me see if I have this right...the caucus-goers in Nevada elected delegates who presumably support the candidate of their choice. Most caucus-goers elected delegates who support Clinton, but Obama won more delegates. But the delegates could change their mind, or be downsized, or get amnesia and forget who the candidates are. The bottom line is that between now and the convention the actual delegate count out of Nevada should look exactly the same as it does right now, unless it totally changes in which case it will be different.
I'm getting an Excedrin #5. Did anything that happened yesterday actually mean anything?

Not where I grew up. The public schools gave us new or fairly new texts every year in most subjects. Not a wealthy suburb (Dayton, Ohio). And iirc if you got a year-old copy of a text that was damaged you could request a new one. I still have a poetry anthology that introduced me to some wonderful verse.

On education, there is a WaPo editorial about how great it is that Ivy League colleges are using more of their endowments to subsidize educations of kids. Noice. My comment, the 2nd part of it;
"Getting our coming generations into higher education also needs to be addressed at the state level. Present policies of teaching to the test under No Child Left Behind is seriously hindering that step in the education process. Hopefully soon the push to ruin our educational system for the profit of cronies and family members of this occupied White House will be ended, and our nation's students can begin receiving adequate education."

But he is as willing to skin a progressive as a holdout from the CSA on how they purse their lips or make odd hooting noises. He has no depth, no substance and no compassion. He just likes writing barbed reviews. You don't do that.

F.Rich has a very good feel for the lost quality of the GoPerv candidates, they really show that there is an electorate to invent, and they haven't done it. At least KKKKarl had his slime. Seems like the slime all has trickled down into the sewers and no one is left. which is a good thing.

The fact our DoJ and State Dep't fumbled the Madrid train cell's prosecution by detaining the cell leader this week is a major slap in the face to Europe.
Cheney is doing that as a way to get back at Spain for booting Aznar after those bombings, when he was down double digits in polls before that.
Then icing on the cake is Condi announcing she will promote her vice czar of the czar to the no.3 at State the same week Putin tells us not to recognize Kosovo.
We lost a chance to reconnect with the EU for the war on terra from a moral standpoint, NATO is in shambles from Afghanistan, Putin tells us no go in Europe and the closest guy we have to him is promoted.

His drummer has some chops, the girl is so inspiring on bass, every concert off that tour they command crowds at a festival, more people are watching as the songs go on.
It's like supernatural magnetism on display. He's got the gravity of Newton and she's this transcendental supernovae cluster just nailing licks and holding the cosmos together so he can comet across the galaxy and keep planets charted in their classical paths.

Mr. Murder, the State Dept under Conduit is about as demoralized as DoJ under Abu, this WH has been as bad for the U.S. as it is possible to be, the recovery is going to be hard but needs to start before Jan 20, 2009, I think.
