I have heard from many people that their Republican friends are having quite a difficult time reconciling what they have allowed themselves to believe they were supporting with the evidence in front of them of what the reality is.
Personally, I am more than heartened that the carefully constructed narratives the GOP has spent 3 decades constructing are crumbling to dust and their supporters are finding themselves lost and confused and afraid. At this point, sadly, the Dems have failed to create a competing narrative toward which they could gravitate, but the Obama campaign at least seems to have done so. I remain cautiously optimistic.

There are only two ways out of this mess and the proposed government bailout and expansion of the debt ceiling is not one of them. In fact one could argue that this bailout is more of the same shit that got us in to this mess in the first place.
For 30 years we have mortgaged our futures and the futures of our chidren by borrow and spend policies.
We can choose one of two avenues or, quite possibly, a blend of each.
Turn to outsiders for support. The most notable of these are the rapidly growing sovereign wealth funds. They would be interested because their dollar denominated wealth will become nearly worthless if there is a complete financial collapse. These same funds have actually begun to shy away from buying more dollar denominated debt because they are being burned by the devaluing dollar. We should expect that they will insist in direct investment in U.S. companies.
Think of it as selling your assets to cover your debts, a pawn shop if you will. As with anyone who is forced to pawn assets, we will be in a very poor bargaining position.
To the extent that it proves to be politically unacceptable for foreign ownership of U.S. companies (this is not farfetched, we blocked China from gaining a significant minority position in Merryl Lynch just two years ago) we will need to turn to the second avenue.
Print money, gobs of it, flood the economy until the liquidity needed to unfreeze the economy is attained. This is, in fact, what the Fed and this Administration has been trying to do.
Expect hyperinflation, think on the order of 10% per month.
Welcome to the natural consequences of Republican economics.

there's that word again - Russia's two main stockmarkets bounced back yesterday after trading resumed for the first time since Wednesday - but were then closed after further volatility.
The rouble-denominated MICEX and dollar-denominated RTS reopened from suspension, only for trading to be halted in the morning and afternoon. Regulators sought the closures as shares soared - the MICEX was up 26.3% and the RTS 20%. By early evening, trading had not resumed.
The revival of Russian markets, coinciding with a strong rally on Wall Street and in London, came after the Kremlin pumped nearly $60bn (£33bn) into money markets. Russia's finance ministry said on Wednesday it was lending $44bn to the three main banks, while the central bank announced loans of $14bn to ease the liquidity crisis.
Yesterday the prime minister, Vladimir Putin, said Russia's economy remained secure. Speaking at an investors' forum in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, he said that the "fundamental indicators" were sound and the country had "more than $550bn" in currency reserves. "Our response to problems will be market-orientated. The government and the central bank have sufficient reserves to defend the currency and financial system," Putin said. Other Kremlin officials made clear the government was prepared to intervene further.

A major part of the problem is the conservative media. The Washington Post, in its editorial today assigned equal blame for our current financial crisis to the financial sector & government's large deficits. Here's my response to them:
This is one of the most incredibly bone-headed editorials, from one of the nation's major newspapers, I've ever read. We find out that the largest sector of our economy - the financial market - is essentially a house of cards & that's its failures are likely, without government intervention, to spiral the economy into a depression. So the Washington Post editorial board finds the problem to be equally grounded in financial shenanigans of incredible proportions & the large deficits the federal government is running. I can see WP editorials on the Great Depression being equally a problem of Wall Street excesses & poorly run government programs.

The Financial Crash of 2008 – or whatever posterity eventually decides to call the events of the last week or so – is potentially an event of era-defining historical significance. It will not fail to have massive long-term political and social consequences, many of which we cannot even guess as yet.
You’d never guess that from the reaction of Britain’s political class, for whom it is pretty much business as usual. Wakey, wakey, guys! That giant sucking sound you might just faintly perceive in the background is the noise major financial institutions generate as they implode, destroying tens of thousands of jobs and making many people homeless in their wake.
To be charitable, the Lib Dems have half an excuse, as it is their conference week. Unfortunate timing or what? Meanwhile, Labour is wrapped up in personality-based internecine squabbling over Brown’s leadership, which is of little import to anyone outside certain somewhat selective coteries.
The Tories are pretty much keeping their mouths firmly shut, perhaps dumbstruck that their entire free market ideological framework is unravelling before their eyes. Then again, many Tory MPs have yet to return from the desirable sunspot in which they spent their summer.
But in the popular consciousness, the quasi-religious veneration of ‘wealth creators’ is right now evaporating, possibly for good. To the extent that the taxpayer picks up the tab for sorting out the mess, a backlash is on the cards. It may even amount to widespread anger. Such a sentiment is something savvy politicians will seek to exploit.
Labour are shit but the Tories are marginally more shittier
What Moon said. It's easy to forget how shit the Tories were to anyone who wasn't well off.
With JKR, it's about keeping in place the social policies that helped her when she was a single mother with fuck-all money.

If I understood right (which is dubious about the economy), the edge is the total shutdown of the global economy. game over.

That cunt John McCain is the most responsible for this mess. He has always agrued for less regulation, always.
which, of course, is why mccain was so quick to blame obama, even though the charge made no sense.
it's his m.o.
public fincancing. born outside the u.s. flip-flopping. etc, etc.
the first thing mccain does is accuse his opponent of his own faults. it muddies the water and blunts upcoming attacks.

In the past, the Tories – the party chiefly associated by the public with finance capital – could have expected to take a pasting. Labour’s left would have had a field day, with Labour Research pamphlets detailing the links of senior Conservatives to the investment banking sector selling like hot buttered collateralised debt obligations, circa 2006.
It speaks volumes about the erosion of the political space between Britain’s two major parties that this scenario will not happen. Sadly there is currently no Labour left MP of sufficient stature, support base, or intellect to act as a figurehead to promote a twenty-first century equivalent to the AES.
Thus the door is left open to populist politicians. The far right may start dropping devious hints about the rootless cosmopolitan character of the speculators. Many of them are from a certain ethnic background, don’t you know?
What of the far left, traditionally the most trenchant critics of monopoly capitalism? Look at some of the main far left websites and you can already read triumphant claims of the vindication of correct Marxist analysis, even if the correct Marxist analysis in question is in complete contradiction to the correct Marxist analysis advanced by the other sects.
This is difficult to take too seriously. At bottom, the most that such groupings have been saying is that at some point, financial capital would inevitably take a nosedive. Given that the existence of a credit cycle is hardly in doubt, that is not much of a boast.
It could, of course, have been different. A serious socialist party with real labour movement roots could have developed an analysis of where we are now, both in terms of Marxist categories and in more readily understandable outline for agitational purposes.
Oh, no; Heath Barr is just about to appear.

Well, I thought it was a little over the top until I heard something like that the day before on NPR (I know, grain of salt) saying we came close to banks being unable to trade money with one another, which would lead to a cascading destablization. Trade grinds to a halt. Depression.

If such an organisation had worked steadily for years to popularise these ideas, it would surely have been able to gain support in the months to come. But because we don’t have an adequate left in Britain, this cannot happen, either.
If conspiracy theories about 'Jewish money men' do start to gain a wider hearing, the irresponsibility of the left over the last period will have to take some of the blame.

Roubini concludes with a typically chipper assessment:
At this point a severe recession is unavoidable; the only question is how severe and protracted it will be. Debt reduction and public recapitalization of banks will not instantly resolve every problem and will not prevent a painful recession that – at this point – will last at least 18 month. But it will prevent a painful U-shaped recession from turning into a multi-year L-shaped recession like the one that afflicted Japan for a decade after the bursting of its real estate and equity bubble. So let us not delude ourselves that even a HOME program of debt reduction will prevent a recession: the recession train has already left the station and the economic downturn is already becoming global. What we can avoid now is only the risk that a severe US and now advanced economy recession will turn into a Japanese style decade long stagnation. Thus, the time of dithering and using band-aid to deal with the financial storm of the century is over and the time to act boldly is now! Lets create the HOME (Home Owners’ Mortgage Enterprise) now!
