Oh, perfect. Testing is just swell. Graduate rate is lowest in 10 years
High school exit exam at center of debate over failure of a third of state's seniors to earn diploma
Jill Tucker and Nanette Asimov, SF Chronicle Staff Writers Saturday, May 12, 2007
California's high school graduation rate dropped to a 10-year low last year as a third of the Class of 2006 left without a diploma, according to state Department of Education numbers posted Friday.
Statewide, the graduation rate was 67 percent of the 423,289 seniors in 2006. That is down from 71 percent in 2005.
That 4 percentage point decline works out to an additional 21,000 students who did not don a cap and gown.
The official graduation rate was released four days after UCLA researcher John Rogers published a report predicting about 50,000 fewer graduates in the class of 2006.
The state's numbers are not what he would have expected, Rogers said. "But they affirm the fact that there's a significant drop-off in graduates."
The significant decline came as the state required a test of basic skills, known as the exit exam, for graduation for the first time.
Nonetheless, the decline comes after more than a decade of expensive changes in the classroom -- class-size reduction, higher standards, additional teacher training and more.
Critics of the exit exam say the plunge in graduates shows why the test should be delayed until the state can ensure that all students -- especially those in low-performing schools -- have had the chance to learn what's on the test. But state education officials say the decline actually illustrates the need for the exit exam.

Amy Goodman and Greg Palast
Mom’s Day broadcast
“I have Karl Rove’s emails”
Dollars & Sense: In the new edition of your book, ARMED MADHOUSE, you report on the theft of the 2008 election. How do you know what they’re doing? Any way to stop them?
Palast: I know because I have Karl Rove’s emails. No kidding. He and his team aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer. They sent copies of their plans to GeorgeWBush.ORG instead of GeorgeWBush.COM addresses — and, heh heh, they ended up in my in-box. Who says this job ain’t fun?
Dollars & Sense: Bush fired eight prosecutors. You were behind the scenes on that story long before it broke in the US. What are they still withholding from us?
Palast: Look, it’s all about VOTES. You’ll see that the prosecutor that Karl Rove insisted in putting in place is a slithery character named Tim Griffin. He’s the guy I busted as the spider-mind behind the “caging lists” which purged thousands of Black voters. The prosecutors fired, as you’ll see in Armed Madhouse, include those, like David Iglesias in New Mexico, who refused to bring phony cases of fraud against legitimate voters. It’s a matter of economics: the Republican party is systematically knocking out lower-income voters; that makes their purges racially biased — but my data show that’s just the effect of hunting down and attacking the ballot power of working class and poor voters. Disenfranchisement is class war by other means.
Karl has the math.

I got really really pissed off about GWPDA's comment above and then I could not say anything about it for what seemed like days.
Sheesh! People, governments, educators: listen to me please. People are not all the same. Not everyone is capable or desirous of becoming what we believe they should become. Even if, in our infinite wisdom, we decide what is best for them. Sometimes they simply do not like school or "book learning" or teachers. It is okay. We are not all the same and that, in the end, is a good thing.
During the last couple of decades we have done our best to denigrate (financially, socially, and every other way imaginable) those who do not appreciate the wonder of verb conjugation or the pleasures of proving theorums. Why?
In a well-balanced society these people could be honored for the contributions that they COULD make: a good machine operator is a joy to watch. If you have ever taken nail and hammer and saw in hand and then watched a "real" carpenter in action, you know what I mean.
Still, we keep trying to force people into the square holes we have designed for them and then wonder that they do not fit.
Fucking idiots in the government and universities and society! Please gain a little knowledge before it is too late.

Karl has the math.
Yes, Karl had the math in 2006, and look how well THAT turned out for him.
His problem is that people regardless of their skin color, or their incomes, have had it with him and his fucking Chimp. They're going to take it out on Republicans, that's what the Tuesday meeting was all about, GOP congressmen telling Rove that his brilliant plan is going to cost the congressmen their phoney baloney jobs and they are going to start looking out for number one, and fuck Rove and his "party loyalty" schtick.

I was around during the 60s. There were basically 3 big events going on simultaneously. The Vietnam war, the cultural revolution (ie the dirty fucking hippies), and the civil rights movement. They were all part of the same mix, frequently hard to distinguish from one another.
The big hit the Democrats took occurred because JFK and LBJ supported civil rights.
Because the Democrats became the party of civil rights the Republicans got a solid block of support from the Southern states that more or less lasts to this day.
All this noise about the Dems getting tagged with being the party of the dirty fucking hippies who lost Vietnam is nonsense. It is nonsense that was successfully pedaled by Republicans who still will not admit to the deal they made with the devil to gain votes in the South.

BY ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW YORK---- In a debate televised Friday night, Don Imus' former producer called the Rev. Al Sharpton a race-baiter who was looking for attention when he led a campaign to fire the radio host. Sharpton said Imus and his producer got what they deserved for making a racist, sexist remark on the air.
Bernard McGuirk and Sharpton appeared together for a combative debate on Fox News Channel's ''Hannity & Colmes'' show. McGuirk was fired last month for his part in an exchange on the ''Imus in the Morning'' program in which Imus called the members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team ''nappy-headed hos.''
No mention in the AP article that, according to Imus, part of McGuirk's job description was to tell n----r jokes

RIL it's very frustrating.
I bought 3 cheap bookshelves.
1 of the kits came without the hardware to put it together.
I called, e-mailed for about 2 months and instead of just sending me the hardware they sent me 3 more bookshelves.
Now I got 4 bookshelf boxes cluttering up my tiny apartment.

I kind of like all of the numbers after the comments: must be our addresses or something.
BTW, I was a UAW member for thirteen years after college. I worked in a foundry. (Hard work and good pay at that time. If I had not been so well-paid, I would have quit)
During that time I learned to appreciate how hard people will work for the right amount of money and how much skill it takes to do the job correctly. Yet, we have sold these people out and that is not fair to either them or ultimately to us.
But mine is not a popular position.

I meant in society. We have sold all of the good jobs out. We keep looking at people who can do wonderful things as being failures. But they are not. I simply do not understand why we are no longer teaching people to be electricians and plumbers and carpenters and such in the high schools.
This used to known as vocational education. In Michigan we have essentially ended this: the state has withdrawn mostly all support for such ventures. I cannot speak for other places but I know that being a good carpenter or plumber or electrician is still an EXCELLENT and HIGHLY PAID job around here. Why are we not teaching people to do this?

An estimated TV audience of 100 million is expected to watch this year's Eurovision Song Contest from Helsinki, which is now under way.
In all, 24 nations are competing, with Ukrainian drag queen Verka Serdyuchka as the bookies' favourite, just ahead of Marija Serifovic from Serbia.
Viewers can vote by phone and text message once all acts have performed.
Maria Sestic of Bosnia-Herzegovina was first on stage, with the UK's entry, by Scooch, 19th in the running order.
Scooch - singing Flying the Flag - said it would be "really difficult" to follow the Ukrainian favourite.

My classmates all attacked the curriculum saying that it wasn't preparing all of the students for college. I pointed out that the curriculum as it was was a good fit with the employment profile of the community, and made some minor tweaks such as citizenship and life skills classes.

WA still has voc programs DWD, but they're increasingly high-tech. We have a kick-ass machining program, for example, largely provided by Boeing, as I don't know of many schools that could afford the computerized machines. A lot of CAD by the same token. I don't see a lot of the traditional trades represented, though, and I'm not sure why. Beyond the umbrella explanation that this country has a huge and inexplicable resistance to education in general, and loves n othing more than the opportunity to cut its funds.

Vocational education has failed because the realities of the trade fields requires real on the job experience in order for the states to "prove" you are capable to qualify for licensing. This goes way beyond high school training, and the education system. Think about it. Would you feel comfortable letting a high school graduate fresh out of HS come work on your Natural Gas system? How about fixing your shorting out plugs?

In NY you have to apprentice to a master electrician to become one yourself. Once you get your master electrician's license if you want to earn any real dough, you have to get into the IBEW. That can be, ahem, "financially challenging" shall we say.

The State Of Texas requires a minimum number of hours of working under a "master" licensee before allowing them to test for their own license. Most trades take about four thousand hours under a master. Vocational education does not count for any of those hours.

And the fees for joiningg this "lobby" have dramatically increased over the last year or so. I was thinking about signing up this year, because they have some good reference material that can help me to be a bit more profitable, but when I saw that they now want $160 every quarter instead of once a year, I said fuck that.

Is it not required? See I thought my plumber told me that y'all have a continuing ed. requirement every year now to keep your license current.
That's how it works for lawyers - and it's a real pain in the ass and very expensive.

Those sexy jobs of the future are important, but who would you pay more?
A software engineer -- or the guy or gal who is going to stop your toilet from flooding your bathroom and running down into your basement?
You would be surprised. We had a woman bugging us last week to get her an estimate on fixing the sewer leak under her renthouse in the low income part of town. Basically, what's going on there is that her tenants are living over an open sewer, and to fix it, a couple of grown men will have to crawl on their bellies through shit. We worked up a quote of $1300 based on the 4 - 8 hours it would take the two men to fix it. She balked at the price. Since I knew her home address, I knew good and fucking well that she wasn't hurting for funds. But instead of scheduling the job, she indicated that she was going to seek another estimate. In other words, my tenants can continue to live over an open sewer for another week or two if it saves me a couple hundred bucks. At that point, I was tempted to up the quote price just to make sure that my guys didn't end up crawling through shit to fix something for a bitch who really deserved to have the Health Department condemn her rental property. What I did instead was to say, I certainly encourage you to get other estimates. I will put our written estimate in the mail to you and please feel free to compare it with the others you may get.
The plumbers were very happy with me!
I've run into this a lot. It's the noveau riche types in the McMansions who are the worst. They seem to believe that they are bestowing an honor on anyone who can do something for them that they cannot do themselves, and that said workers should accept that honor in lieu of pay.

I refuse to believe that.

Good comment. I agree. Not everyone wants to or needs to or should go to college. There are different skills that society needs, beyond learning.

I didn't go to college. Hated school. I have a few college credits now. (Just finished a French 101 class that I attended with my 21 yr old son and 23 yr old daughter.) I think that the breadth of a liberal arts education should somehow be part of an elementary education.

Wait a minute - isn't that against some city ordinance or law for her not to fix that? Why isn't that a public health issue?

Cont. Ed is a requirement to renewing my license, but signing up for the lobby group that enables the class is not.
