Didn't take long for this. When you control the media, you shape public opinion.
PENSACOLA, Fla. - Oil companies once viewed drilling in the deep waters off Florida as cost prohibitive. Politicians feared even the slightest sign of support would be career suicide.
The early activity here stems from a 2006 Congressional compromise that allows drilling on 8.3 million acres more than 125 miles off the Panhandle — an area that had been covered by the moratorium, which was enacted out of environmental concerns. In exchange, the state got a no-drilling buffer along the rest of its beaches.
With gas topping $4 a gallon, recent polls show Americans, Floridians included, more supportive of drilling in protected areas. Some politicians — including Gov. Charlie Crist — have switched sides.
"We think the public is way out ahead of the politicians on these issues. People are more open to (offshore drilling) now," said Tom Moskitis, spokesman for the American Gas Association, a trade group.

True, but at least he lived long enough to see how the GOP had fucked the country and fucked up their own party. Probably had a thought or two about how it was a niggra was gonna have a shot at being elected president.
Of course, the old racist fuck would have believed this was another sign that the country was going to hell, and he couldn't wait to be held in the arms of Jesus.

A man raced into Berlin's Madame Tussauds wax museum Saturday and ripped the head off a waxwork of Adolf Hitler, police said.
Police said the 41-year-old entered the exhibit shortly after the museum doors opened and "made for the Hitler figure," scuffling with a guard assigned to protect it and the manager before tearing the head off the life-size statue.
The man was arrested and is now in custody, Berlin police spokeswoman Uwe Kozelnik said. Under questioning, the man explained he wanted to protest the figure being included in the museum.
Saturday was the opening day of the Berlin branch of the famous Madame Tussauds wax museum.
The presence of the waxwork, which depicted the Nazi dictator sitting at his desk in his bunker during his last days, in the new museum led to criticism in German media over recent weeks. But the museum's defenders argued Hitler's role in German history must not be ignored.
Hitler was shown with a sullen expression, his head slightly down, and one hand on the desk.
Sort of like how Bush is gonna be about 1 Jan of 2009. Just put a bottle of Jack on the desk an it'll be picture perfect.

TORONTO — Canada’s refugee board has been ordered to take another look at an American deserter’s failed bid for asylum in an unprecedented court ruling that could affect scores of other U.S. soldiers who have refused to fight in Iraq.
In Friday’s decision, which came as Americans celebrated Independence Day, the Federal Court found the Immigration and Refugee Board made mistakes in turning down Joshua Key’s claim for asylum.
"It’s quite a statement," Key, 30, told The Canadian Press from his home in Saskatchewan. "It makes us feel good — probably everybody within this whole process."
A married father of four, Key served as a combat engineer for eight months in Iraq in 2003. He said American soldiers committed savage acts against civilians and routinely killed innocent people.
While the board deemed him credible, it nixed his claim for refugee status on the grounds he was not required to systematically commit war crimes even if he had to violate the Geneva Conventions.
Federal Court Justice Robert Barnes disagreed with that analysis. "Officially condoned military misconduct falling well short of a war crime may support a claim to refugee protection," Barnes wrote.
Military action that "systematically degrades, abuses or humiliates" either combatants or non-combatants could provide such support, he said.
Key, a native of Oklahoma, fled to Canada after deserting during a leave in November 2003. In turning down several similar asylum claims, the refugee board has consistently held that the United States is a democracy, which affords deserters due judicial process.
However, the court said the board should hear evidence on whether deserters can rely on the American government to treat them fairly. "State protection has been a very prominent issue that we have felt has just simply not been given the kind of attention it requires," Zaslofsky said.
"It doesn’t appear feasible for people like Joshua Key and the other war resisters to rely on state protection that people would normally be able to rely on — even in a democracy like the United States."
Key’s lawyer, Jeffry House, said the ruling expands a soldier’s right to refuse military service.

In his old age, Thurmond voted for a federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr.; Helms voted against. Defending his vote, Helms explains, "I have never stated and do not believe that Dr. King was a Communist" but then argues for guilt by association because some of King's advisers were former communists.

I asked why the economy was doing poorly and her responses were gas prices, massive government debt, and the subprime mortgage fiasco. She was unsympathetic with homeowners but had not considered the role of financial institutions.

http://www.brennancenter.org/con...f_voter_caging/
In 1990, the Republican Party of North Carolina and Senator Jesse Helms re-election campaign committee mailed postcards to 125,000 voters; 81,000 cards were mailed to registered Democrats in precincts that were 94% African-American, and 44,000 cards were mailed to African-American voters exclusively.[27]
Undelivered cards were then used to create a list of voters to be challenged.[28] The U.S. Department of Justice filed suit, again ending in a consent decree. This agreement prohibited the state party from targeting voters based on their racial minority status, and required it to obtain prior court approval for its anti-fraud activities.[29]

He seldom goes out in public now without a flag pin stuck in his lapel. He devoted an entire speech to patriotism this week in Independence, Mo. Visually reinforcing the message, he stood in front of a quartet of large American flags.
None of this is an accident. Polling shows that on the threshold test any serious presidential candidate must pass, Obama has ground to cover.
A CNN poll released one day after the Illinois senator gave his patriotism speech showed that a quarter of registered voters surveyed questioned Obama's love of country. Nearly 30% of the respondents who described themselves as independents -- a coveted slice of the electorate -- believed he lacks patriotism, according to the survey.

WHEATON, Md. -- In another sign of the harsh toll being exacted by the economic downturn, the number of Americans unemployed for six months or more has risen sharply over the past year and is likely to increase even more.
The number of people unemployed for at least 26 weeks has risen to 1.6 million -- up 37% in the past year. That is almost double the percentage increase for the overall unemployed, according to a Labor Department report released Thursday. More than 18% of the unemployed have been looking for work for more than half a year, compared with about 11% at the start of the 2001 recession.

My recollection is that Cynthia McKinney pointed out the bush senior connections with the saudi royals, and the fact he was meeting with them on 9/11, and that it was perhaps too much of a coinkydynk not to deserve some scrutiny.
Among the people who were most exercised by McKinney's statements was Josh Marshall. I can't recall if that was during his gary condit phase or his sitting at the knee of ken pollack phase.
God save us from the all the liberals who are so afraid of hearing something true actually being said. I recall Dan Kennedy calling Dick Durbin an idiot for his comments that our behavior at Gitmo was reminiscent of Soviet regimes.

that's pretty much complete economic collapse in my book.

From NYT:
The Columbian government also defended the rescue as a Colombian effort after reports that American and Israeli advisers had taken part.
“Not a single foreigner participated,” Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos said. But he acknowledged that the American military had provided a surveillance plane to monitor the operation, as well as tracking technology placed on the helicopter used to spirit the hostages away that could emit distress signals.
He also said Israel had helped Colombia reorganize its intelligence services in the past."
and...
"While Colombia receives more than $600 million a year in security and antinarcotics aid from the United States, any perception of a more in-depth American role in the rescue would be likely to inflame emotions in neighboring countries like Venezuela, where political supporters of President Hugo Chávez openly support the FARC."

Guns still elusive for D.C. residents
Those looking to buy firearms after the Supreme Court ruling against the District of Columbia's gun ban are out of luck. Purchasing regulations have yet to be written.

WASHINGTON -- Days after the Supreme Court ruled that residents of the nation's capital can keep handguns at home for self-defense, George Harley walked out of a Maryland gun shop disheartened, his goal of legally having a gun to protect his family put on hold.

Once upon a time neighborhood churches provided the safety net in society. FDR switched that to government and churches lost a lot of power and influence.
If the cash flow ceases, there will be religious (and nonreligious) communes springing up where small sources of revenue are pooled.

Naw, then it wouldn't be a dry heat anymore...
There's a huge project being planned to pump out the Verde river aquifer to fuel growth up north, but a bunch of people are fighting it because it would wreck a huge ecosystem and even take away water from the Phoenix area. Aquifer pumping in the southern part of the state has led to huge sinkholes opening up.
But that's happening in lots of other places too. Like Kansas, where the Oglalla aquifer is being drained and all those crops in the western part of the state are going to stop being profitable soon. You know, the ones they grow using petroleum for the pumps, fertilizer and harvesting? It all ties together...

Apparently the wingnuts noticed the protesters at Bushfest.
From Gateway Pundit The crazed Pinko running at President Bush is Desiree Farooz, the same lunatic who assaulted Condoleezza Rice with "bloody" hands at a Senate hearing last October. This dangerous woman is going to get seriously hurt some day.
Although, not verified, another commenter claims the nut in the UVA shirt was Kucinich's press secretary
The freaks were screaming "F**K You Bush!" The New Editor has video. They were also taking turns disrupting the president. That's not freedom of speech- That's abuse.
Among the comments:
I am not a violent person, nor would I be very good at violence if I were. But if I am ever anywhere that one of these clown shoes pulls a stunt like this, all those hours of watching MMA are finally going to pay off.
This is just another example of the selfishness of the loony left. On a day celebrating those people who went through rigorous channels to become citizens, code pinko tries to steal their thunder with this garbage.
As usual, President Bush handled himself with grace and dignity, something that these lunatics will never exhibit or grasp.
these morons continue to engage in this type of activity because they pay no price for their idiotic actions. If those who were having their rights violated, the rank and file of the audience, would exact a penalty for this behavior, it would cease or at least decrease. If those who are in attendance to hear the president or whoever speak would slap the snot out of these morons, their list of volunteer fool protesters would surely shrink. Bear in mind this retribution should be at the hands of the attending citizenry, not the authorities. Plenty have fought for their freedom of speech, let these fools get a taste of it.

history lesson
prep school: McCain had a low class rank (894 of 899) that he did not aim to improve. He did well in academic subjects that interested him, such as literature and history, but studied only enough to pass subjects he disliked, such as math.
McCain's pre-combat duty started two and a half years of training as a naval aviator at Pensacola. There he also earned a reputation as a party man.
He was then stationed in Skyraider squadrons. The planes he was flying crashed twice and once collided with power lines, but he received no major injuries.
McCain was almost killed on July 29, 1967 when he was near the center of the Forrestal fire, an unusual electrical glitch which discharged a Zuni rocket on the flight deck. He escaped from his burning jet and was trying to help another pilot escape when a bomb exploded.
McCain was flying his twenty-third bombing mission over North Vietnam, when his Skyhawk was shot down by a missile over Hanoi. McCain fractured both arms and a leg, and then nearly drowned, when he parachuted into a lake in Hanoi. He was taken to the Hanoi Hilton.

Yah. But not since we brought the Central Arizona Project on line. Now, we re-charge the aquifers. It's fairly important to be up to date on water use if you're going to be in Arizona. Just as it's important to know how far west the Oglala aquifer extends, and to what degree Arizona farming is dry land farming. The Verde project isn't going to work, incidentally - it's backed by those great developers who have built houses in northwest AZ as bedroom communities for Vegas. Out of time, fellas.

Interesting question. I think he has tried to enlist local support. But, the election laws in most states are designed to exclude anyone who is not affiliated with a major party. Your accusations could be leveled against any and all third party candidates over the last 50 years or so. I'd like to see you organize a grass roots campaign in all 50 states against the majors. nader makes a lot of good points, and far be it from someone who supported the democratic candidate who was excluded from the debates to downplay the importance of protest votes for someone who can't actually win. but he's going about it the wrong way this time, which really does make it look like it's all about ralph. there ARE no sure-thing republican states. the important things this time are getting a landslide mandate and getting a veto/filibuster-proof senate majority. as smart as ralph is supposed to be, you'd think he'd see that.

Obama did not explicitly state he would criminally prosecute the Telecoms, just that he COULD.
From your link: However, if Obama now has no stomach to enforce the criminal law, as he once proclaimed he would, he may pay a significant cost for balking. In particular, he is likely going to lose more than a few among his base of supporters who are upset with his flip-flop on the FISA amendments, for many of these unhappy supporters may currently take comfort in knowing (as few others know) that he could hold violators responsible for their criminal actions – and will retain that power even if the current legislation becomes law.
Of course, Obama can remain silent, which is the usual course of action for Washington politicians in these situations. But he will remain silent at the risk of making all his previous statements increasingly hollow, and his posture strikingly wishy-washy. And how refreshing it would be for him to act like a leader who believes we are governed by laws, not the whims of men.

Wesley Clark's academic standing:
Clark sat in the front in many of his classes, a position held by the highest performer in class. Clark participated heavily in debate, was consistently within the top 5% of his class as a whole (earning him a "Distinguished Cadet" patch on his uniform), and ultimately graduated as valedictorian of West Point. The valedictorian is first to choose which career field of the Army to serve in, and Clark selected armor...
Clark eventually applied for a Rhodes Scholarship and learned in December of his senior year at West Point that he had been accepted.
I don't think there's much of a match between Clark & McCain on the subject of BRAIN power.

el, You're using the wrong source. McCain's data is more complete at Dickipedia (seriously)
Ever wonder what would happen if the UAW held a shutout strike - that is, surrounded the car plant with pickets to keep workers out - but the punchline is, the 'workers' they kept out were management? The line ran the plant themselves for a few years?
i wonder how GM or Ford could do if those making the decisions were trying to make and sell cars, not to make auto loans and sell stock shares.
Fantasy, i know. Possibly Commie. But still, dammit all.....
Clark was assigned a position in the 1st Infantry Division and flew to Vietnam on May 21, 1969 during the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. He worked as a staff officer, collecting data and helping in operations planning, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his work with the staff. Clark was then given command of A Company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry of the 1st Infantry Division in January 1970. In February, only one month into his command, he was shot four times by a Viet Cong soldier with an AK-47. The wounded Clark shouted orders to his men, who counterattacked and defeated the Viet Cong force. Clark had injuries to his right shoulder, right hand, right hip, and right leg, and was sent to Valley Forge Army Hospital in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania to recuperate. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the encounter.

Every time Clark is mentioned for his comments about McCain by the MSM, they ALWAYS insert that he was fired from his last post as NATO Supreme Commander to undermine his credibility.
What was the firing all about?

The whole abortion issue was covered last night. I think the context of the statement is important. Roe vs. Wade was the context of which he was speaking, and his interpretation of that was the basis of his statement. Whether Roe is right or wrong is another matter altogether.

i'm so glad that a declining number of people in this country give a shit about what happened in Nam. as a liberal, of course i abhor imperialist wars of choice and regret my naton's actions back then, but for fuck's sake, can we focus on the problems facing us today? please?

Trademark Dave, good post at Obama's site. My guess is, he got the message from progressives. The second press conference yesterday when he reiterated the Iraq end the war message.
Otherwise he would have been toast.

Pacers had phatness. Gremlins are just cool-looking in retrospect. If either one of them were revived as a 45 mpg new design, they could do well.
Friend of mine had a Gremlin at one time that he just beat the shit out of on a daily basis, and he held up very well. He bought the full replacement warranty for it when it was brand new (everything on it would be replaced for free within two years), and with a few months to go he blew the motor in it by leaving a brick on the accelerator. Still, he said the motor ran for about 40 minutes before going.

A totally crazy Saturday-morning thought: Wouldn't George W. Bush make an awesome high-school government teacher? Wouldn't it be something if his post-presidential life would up being that kind of post-service service? How's that for a model? Who needs Harvard visiting chairs and high-end lectures? How about Crawford High? (Or wherever?) Reach out and touch the young before they are jaded, or break them of the cynicism pop culture and possibly their parents have passed down to them. Whatever you think of President Bush, he's a likable guy in love with his country with some history and experience to share.

I apologize - I didn't realize the danger of mentioning Cynthia McKinney.
(But no, Nader isn't the one who came up with his most popular ideas - they were put forward by others, such as Thomas Jefferson, Teddy and FDR, none of whom thought rich people and corporations should be able to oppress the rest of us. They were always liberal ideas.)

From LAT health issues blog - how utterly American....
Kathleen Martinez, 43, is typical of the kind of worker who is most likely to lack paid sick days. The Antioch, Calif., woman works part-time at two low-paying jobs, one as a pizza cook at a grocery store and another at a restaurant. Neither job provides paid sick days and one employer gives her "negative points" for being out sick. If she accrues too many negative points, she says, she'll get fired. Martinez was fired from her last job because she took all five of her allotted paid sick days plus some unpaid days when her daughter had recurrent ear infections and required surgery to insert ear tubes. She is a single parent and also cares for her mother, who has heart and lung diseases, and her grandmother, 87. She says she can't afford to lose another job: "I go to work when I have the flu. My bones can be aching, but I am so worried about getting negative points." Martinez recently discovered she has gynecological cancer, however, and will take a month off to recover from surgery, scheduled for Monday. Even if she doesn't lose her jobs, she worries about the loss in pay. "I rob Peter to pay Paul," she says. "Whenever I'm sick or my daughter or relatives are sick, it takes me a couple of months to catch up with the bills."

"In an interview this week with “Relevant,” a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions must contain “a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother.” Obama then added: “Now, I don’t think that ‘mental distress’ qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term.”…
Do you see an "MD" after his name that makes him qualified to discuss whether or not mental distress is a health issue.
She was savaged by AIPAC who worked overtime for her defeat. Let's call it for what it was: a smear&lie job by the rightwing.
