Pointed out that "economy" comes from "Oikonomos," which meant "rules of the house," the idea being a well-ordered house created a stable base for society. But today it is the economy that provides the wealth for the household (a reversed picture, IOW). The point was the value of etymology of words. It occurred to me that going back to the old understanding might be a very good thing, indeed.

I don't know about up north, but down here in fundy-land it's the Baptists, generally, Church of Christ, which is not to be confused with United Church of Christ, and then the just plain unaffiliated congregations. The Methodists and Presbys and such are at least theologically a bit more sophisticated. (And of course the black churches are often fundamentalist as well, but that's a different subject).

I lived through the early days of the Presbyterian fundamentalist movement. The Wiki article on the PCA is spot-on:

So what is happening with the witholding?
What's happening is what generally happens: nothing.
That's the thing people really don't get. You ain't going to jail for refusing a symbolic amount (9.11, 40.00, whatever), or even refusing the entire amount. They aren't going to break down your door in the middle of the night. They aren't even going to take your house until other avenues are exhausted.
And as it turns out, you generally end up dropping completely off if you just stop filing, which is what I did. I learned a lot at my WTR gathering last year and through my reading.
But note that all of it is illegal (see, Snow, I know that!), save for the reducing your lifestyle method. People just need to make a choice about whether their comfort is worth more than the Iraqis', because our taxes do, in fact, pay for their murder. Imagine if more people refusing to write those "blank checks" they keep decrying when they slag Hill and Barry.
