This type of finance does nothing for me personally. However, when the taxpayers are bailing out these types of companies, I do tend to get very pissed about it.

GravatarOnly person other than Olbermann to look at McCain's actual record so far has been fellow MSNBC'er Dan Abrams. When will this madness stop?

Not really - Methodist doctrine doesn't go well with fundamentalism.

Most of the really whacked-out fundies are some twist on Baptist or Presbyterian doctrine.

And always keep in mind that fundies are only about 25% of the Protestant numbers. "Mainline" denominations (Presbyterian, United Methodists, etc.) have much greater numbers and more liberal outlooks.

GravatarHowever, when the taxpayers are bailing out these types of companies, I do tend to get very pissed about it.

Because of how our economy works we don't necessarily have any choice about keeping banks themselves afloat. Irresponsible business school grads who live to burn through other people's money and do so knowing they'll be saved at the last minute by networks of evil white bastards, on the other hand, should be roasted alive directly in front of the stock exchange.

It's a bit of a sweeping generalization, but fundies tend to support TeeVee preachers, and so are represented in the public sphere all out of proportion to their true numbers.

Ah, must be the Presbyterians I'm thinking of. I've never considered Baptist as Protestant, but I probably should. And of course there's the really whacked-out branch of Lutheranism in this country...

GravatarBecause of how our economy works we don't necessarily have any choice about keeping banks themselves afloat.

Funnay, I was just discussing that in my classes. Pointed out that "economy" comes from "Oikonomos," which meant "rules of the house," the idea being a well-ordered house created a stable base for society. But today it is the economy that provides the wealth for the household (a reversed picture, IOW). The point was the value of etymology of words. It occurred to me that going back to the old understanding might be a very good thing, indeed.

Wednesday March 26, 2:14 pm ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - About 60 protesters opposed to the U.S. Federal Reserve's help in bailing out Bear Stearns (NYSE:BSC - News) entered the lobby of the investment bank's Manhattan headquarters on Wednesday, demanding assistance for struggling homeowners.

Demonstrators organized by the Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America chanted "Help Main Street, not Wall Street" and entered the lobby without an invitation for around half an hour before being escorted out by police.

GravatarI don't know about up north, but down here in fundy-land it's the Baptists, generally, Church of Christ, which is not to be confused with United Church of Christ, and then the just plain unaffiliated congregations. GravatarAh, must be the Presbyterians I'm thinking of.

I lived through the early days of the Presbyterian fundamentalist movement. The Wiki article on the PCA is spot-on:

"The origins of the PCA lie somewhat in a re-alignment of American Presbyterianism, which since the Civil War had generally been divided along North-South lines – the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (UPCUSA) and the Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS), respectively. Movement towards a national merger (which eventually occurred in 1983) had begun to take shape by the early 1970s, and was accelerated by the decision of many dissident conservative congregations to withdraw from the PCUS.

In December 1973, delegates from 260 congregations (over half of them from Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina) that had left the PCUS gathered at Briarwood Presbyterian Church in suburban Birmingham, Alabama, and organized the National Presbyterian Church. After protests from a UPCUSA congregation of the same name[2] in Washington, D.C., the denomination at its Second General Assembly (1974) called itself the National Reformed Presbyterian Church, then adopted its present name the next day."

The fundies have always claimed that Roe V. Wade was the impetus for the split, but that's a timely cover for the inherent racism.

GravatarI just got an e-mail from the group who is trying to prevent DUMBya's "library" from going into SMU.

Katherine S. Mangan writes for the Chronicle of Higher Education: "A medical illustrator from Dallas who spends his days drawing body parts and molecular structures has won The Chronicle's George W. Bush Presidential Library design contest.

"Lewis E. Calver, an associate professor and chair of biomedical communications at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, beat out 120 other contestants, taking about 30 percent of the online vote with his beautifully drawn and carefully thought-out ' Hole in the Ground' design. . . .

"It shows a White House facade propped up on stilts to catch the attention of Bush stalwarts as they drive down the highway adjacent to SMU's campus. 'I liked the idea of a false fażade showing the White House so people who still believe in his presidency can at least have some kind of inspiration, even if it's false inspiration,' Mr. Calver says.

"The design also features a reflecting pool. 'When people look down, they will see reflections of themselves and be reminded that the ones who voted for him were ultimately responsible,' he says. . . .

GravatarSo what is happening with the witholding?

What's happening is what generally happens: nothing.

That's the thing people really don't get. You ain't going to jail for refusing a symbolic amount (9.11, 40.00, whatever), or even refusing the entire amount. They aren't going to break down your door in the middle of the night. They aren't even going to take your house until other avenues are exhausted.

And as it turns out, you generally end up dropping completely off if you just stop filing, which is what I did. I learned a lot at my WTR gathering last year and through my reading.

But note that all of it is illegal (see, Snow, I know that!), save for the reducing your lifestyle method. People just need to make a choice about whether their comfort is worth more than the Iraqis', because our taxes do, in fact, pay for their murder. Imagine if more people refusing to write those "blank checks" they keep decrying when they slag Hill and Barry.
