It was a beautiful fall day in Chicago today. Went to the farmers market at 7:00 and bought eggplant, apples, cider, and tomatos. Mowed the lawn and now will be going to a dinner party to celebrate a close friends 50th birthday.

"Back in 2000, when Hank Paulson was CEO of Goldman Sachs, he testified in front of the Security and Exchange Commission. Among other things, he lobbied the SEC to enact a “change to self-regulation” for Wall Street. He also urged them to change the “net capital rule” which governed the amount of leverage investment banks could use. The net capital rule was indeed changed in 2004, and is now blamed for the investment banks’ collapse.

And the lies keep coming.......
Cheney: Wildlife Conservation Has Been A ‘High Priority’ Of Bush Administration
Yesterday, Vice President Cheney spoke at the White House Conference on North American Wildlife Policy in Reno, NV, claiming that the Bush administration has championed wildlife preservation:
"As all of you know very well, President Bush made wildlife conservation an early and a high priority of his administration. We’ve carried out that commitment in these eight years — and we’ve been proud to have people like you as partners in the enterprise.
The men and women in this room understand what conservation is all about. It means reverence toward creation, and a commitment to faithful stewardship. It means guarding our spectacular wildlife populations — not just for our own time, but for all time."

It's like arguing with doctrinaire Communists. You can rail all you like about Stalin and Mao, and they simply reply, "Those guys weren't real Communists." When pressed, they will say that there have never been real Communists in charge of a country, and therefore, no one knows that it fails.

Docrinaire wingnuts only know about the "invisible hand" but absolutely none of the predicates for it because they've never actually read Adam Smith.

I am doing much better. On the road to recovery really. I am actually eating one small meal a day and it tastes pretty good so I am satisfied. The doctors tell me that three causes conspired to give me this condition: the drugs that I am taking to control the pain, the inactivity that was forced upon me by the new condition of sciatica and the third condition being the surgical hernia making my digestive tract less efficient.
They are treating what they can and it seems to be working.
But my problems seems minor compared to yours. I hope the police have done what they are supposed to do and your daughter and her child are SAFE and on their way to happiness and your family is aiming toward a contented peace as well. With all of my heart.

Hi, I just want to let you al know that there is a very crazy woman named Kelley Wolcott who has been stalking me for years. Supposedly, she thought I was creepy about 9 years ago, so she's decided that she is going to watch my computer use with spyware and tell I everyone I meet that I am a stalker for the rest of my life. I had a dream of becoming a liberal activist lawyer, and even though I overcame a tough background of being a delinquent in high school, she is apparently mad at me for turning out to be a good kid or something, so no matter what school I go to, from college to law school, she finds my professors and all my fellow students and tells them this bullshit story about me and gives them all spyware to watch my computer with. Even if I play a video game on my computer, she watches me play the whole game, and if it's a high-tech game, this means the game plays slow and choppy, which makes it almost unplayable. As a result of this woman's nutty obsession, I haven't had any friends in a long time and I haven't been on a date in years. In addition to that, neither I nor my brother (also a lawyer) can find a job as a lawyer in New Jersey or New York, even though we've both been searching for over a year. My family is not a rich family, so when we run out of money, we're going to lose everything we have. I can't pay off my law-school debts. The only small respite for me would be able to play a video game alone in my house, but I can't even play the video game I spent $20 I don't have to play the normal way because of how nutty she is. My life is ruined now because of this person. She is very adroit and charasmatic, and also very dishonest, and she quickly wins people over with her story. Anyone who would have the same interests around here and be the type of person I would want to get to know around my age is likely to be someone she's spread her rumor to. What's worse, she and her friends follow me around on the blogs and pick fights with me and make hyserical arguments against my opinions. I don't even want to go on the blogs anymore because of her, even though I was a poli sci major, and thinking and talking about politics is one thing I most like to do. Watch out for this person, because she is a bad friend to have and most likely will cause some kind of problems in your life, because although she does a lot to cultivate friends, she's got to be the most narcissistic person alive and will never really give a shit about you. Due to what she did, I've got far less than nothing now, no way to make enough money to pay my debts, my family (including my diabled mother) is on its way to the poor house, I have no friends and not even the dignity of privacy or a good reputation. If I could sue this person I would, but all the people involved know that it's a crime in NJ to spyware someone else's computer illegal, so they're all trying to cover their own asses.

Stone wanted to have doctors declare a backache a "spinal condition" and wanted to inject Botox into his feet (he's to stop his feet from smelling. The judge was not impressed.
But that's just what Bronstein's side says. We don't know for certain. Trust me, custody battles are always awful, but when super wealthy/famous people are involved the truth is "fungible."

RMJ, you've worked in the legal system. I would think your cynicism would have reached peak proportions.
What was really sick was that they gave him 24 hours to take the drug test, and he showed them one bottle of pain pills that was nearly empty. The male investigator was satisfied.
As you said, the legal system is frustrating, but it's all we've got.
Oh, racism is a deeply seated and viciously held prejudice. Honestly, there are people who simply will not vote for Obama because he is black. That is their loss and really not my concern.
What is problematic is that they seem to want to invent rationalizations for their prejudice and that is stupid. Admit it once and for all and be done with it: I ain't votin' for the black guy. You really don't need a reason, it is a free country and you can vote for whomever you like. Or not vote for whomever you like.
But please don't expect ME to participate in the lies you fabricate to justify your pettiness.

Speaking of rigging the election, there's a disturbing bit in the Wikipedia article about the Bradley effect:
Still other sources point out that Obama's performance in precincts using hand-count vote tabulation was precisely in line with exit polling data, and that the dissonance occurred only in districts using easily-compromised Diebold (now Premier Election Solutions) optical scanners, suggesting that fraud rather than any voter bias might be at fault.

GOP dread: Dems could hit 60 Senate seats
By GottaLaff
Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease:
The possibility that Democrats will build a muscular, 60-seat Senate majority is looking increasing plausible, with new polls showing a powerful surge for the party’s candidates in Minnesota, Kentucky and other states.
A poll out Friday shows Sen. Norm Coleman could now easily lose his Minnesota seat to comedian-turned-candidate Al Franken. A Colorado race that initially looked like a nail-biter has now broken decisively for the Democrats. A top official in the McCain camp told us Sen. Elizabeth Dole is virtually certain to lose in conservative North Carolina.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has seen his race tighten dangerously close over the past week — and Democrats are considering moving more money into the state very soon. And there is even talk that Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss is beatable in conservative Georgia after backing the economic bailout package opposed by many voters."
Economic growth is no substitute for wisdom.
I would think you would have learned that from us.

With regards to Europe, the sad thing is, financially speaking, they are clearly just as moronic and corrupt as we are.
Two weeks ago, people were predicting the US dollar would get "crushed" if the $700 billion bailout bill was passed.
However, the euro is now significantly lower now than when the bailout talk started. It's currently at $1.37 .
That's because the last half dozen or so very large banks that have gotten into trouble are all in Europe.
One just went belly up today, after a $50 billion bailout plan failed.
One lesson of this crisis seems to be that greed makes you stupid, regardless of nationality.

Sarah Palin, Recreational Liar:
Record Refutes Palin's Sudan Claim Palin Administration Against Sudan Divestment Before It Was For It, Documents Show
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin fought to protest atrocities in Sudan by dropping assets tied to the country's brutal regime from the state's multi-billion-dollar investment fund, she claimed during Thursday's vice presidential debate.
Not quite, according to a review of the public record and according to the recollections of a legislator and others who pushed a measure to divest Alaskan holdings in Sudan-linked investments.
"The [Palin] administration killed our bill," said Alaska state representative Les Gara, D-Anchorage. Gara and state Rep. Bob Lynn, R-Anchorage, co-sponsored a resolution early this year to force the Alaska Permanent Fund a $40 billion investment fund, a portion of whose dividends are distributed annually to state residents to divest millions of dollars in holdings tied to the Sudanese government.
In Thursday's debate, Palin said she had advocated the state divest from Sudan. "When I and others in the legislature found out that we had some millions of dollars [of Permanent Fund investments] in Sudan, we called for divestment through legislation of those dollars," Palin said.
But a search of news clips and transcripts from the first three months of this year did not turn up an instance in which Palin mentioned the Sudanese crisis or concerns about Alaska's investments tied to the ruling regime. Moreover, Palin's administration openly opposed the bill, and stated its opposition in a public hearing on the measure.
Is there anything this woman tells the truth about?

you know, i'm a big 'ware the sleeping dragon' type and i believe in the way in which other nations, even nations without white people, are flashing past the US in terms of development and technology. but even i don't think "china is on the verge of taking over the world."
let's review:
oil: without it, much of the chinese economy crashes. no one, including china, "wins" from a thermonuclear exchange over iranian supply. china isn't exactly rushing to retool to a petro-free economy, either.
coal: not a technology that the future is built upon, long term. and yet, how much do the chinese seem to love it? see: far too many new energy plants being brought online just now in china.
paper: the official chinese banking community is holding, what? how much toxic US based paper value, and also questionable bond paper, right now? because yeah, like the stuff our treasury just bought, US paper is "bound to go up in value, sooner or later." or not.
food: as bad as we're doing, it's not like the chinese are doing "better" when it comes to 'local, sustainable' sources of food production. and hey: they have a lot more people than we do. one environmental ag-energy speculator's crash of note and whoops! uncontrollable riots all over the country...
environment: speaking of resource mismanagment, who here thinks the chinese are doing a better job than the US when it comes to preservation and long term managment of environmental resourses? we suck, but at the very least so do they. and again with the 'delicate balance' stuff. it seems much, much easier to offset the chinese, compared to the US, when it comes to making the native environment work/not work in a post-petrol reality. again with the population problem.
political oppression: yo, there's a price to be paid for killing off your most creative, analytical, risk taking class, when they're young and haven't yet contributed to the national economy. you're not just killing punk musicians over there, you know? "free thinking" is good for every industry, and when it doesn't happen, other nations blow by you in development.
i don't mean to sound racist or malthusian. i just think that as a managment problem, i'd rather be a Master of the Universe in n.america, than eastern asia. editied for haloscum.

Just got back from the Obama rally in Virginia - gret event, lots of energy, people lined up for 8 or 10 blocks. Then they put the stage in a spot where you couldn't even wee it. People were looking in all different directions trying to figure out where he was. I had a stat... can't find it at the moment, but Canada is actually more diverse than the US. And especially so in the cities (not this one, tho). A *majority* of the citizens of Toronto were born in another country. Vancouver, very high rates of immigration, I don't know if it's over 50 percent, but there is a very large Asian population. And, unlike in the US, immigration is looked at as a positive good, even if many governments don't live up to the rhetoric.

Jane Curtin: Well, the 1970's are in their final month, and with some thoughts on this decade and the one we're about to enter, here's Weekend Update's Social Sciences Editor Al Franken.
Al Franken: Thank you, Jane. Well, the "me" decade is almost over, and good riddance, and far as I'm concerned. The 70's were simply 10 years of people thinking of nothing but themselves. No wonder we were unable to get together and solve any of the many serious problems facing our nation. Oh sure, some people did do some positive things in the 70's - like jogging - but always for the wrong reasons, for their own selfish, personal benefit. Well, I believe the 80's are gonna have to be different. I think that people are going to stop thinking about themselves, and start thinking about me, Al Franken. That's right. I believe we're entering what I like to call the Al Franken Decade. Oh, for me, Al Franken, the 80's will be pretty much the same as the 70's. I'll still be thinking of me, Al Franken. But for you, you'll be thinking more about how things affect me, Al Franken. When you see a news report, you'll be thinking, "I wonder what Al Franken thinks about this thing?", "I wonder how this inflation thing is hurting Al Franken?" And you women will be thinking, "What can I wear that will please Al Franken?", or "What can I not wear?" You know, I know a lot of you out there are thinking, "Why Al Franken?" Well, because I thought of it, and I'm on TV, so I've already gotten the jump on you. So, I say let's leave behind the fragmented, selfish 70's, and go into the 80's with a unity and purpose. That's what I think. I'm Al Franken. Jane?

In a departure from previous elections, Democrats and liberal Catholic groups are waging a fight within the church, arguing that the Democratic Party better reflects the full spectrum of church teachings.
It is a contest for credibility among observant Catholics, with each faction describing itself as a defender of “life.” The two sides disagree over how to address the “intrinsic evil” of abortion.
The escalating efforts by more-liberal Catholics are provoking a vigorous backlash from some bishops and the right.
In Scranton, Pa., every Catholic attending Mass this weekend will hear a special homily about the election next month: Bishop Joseph Martino has ordered every priest in the diocese to read a letter warning that voting for a supporter of abortion rights amounts to endorsing “homicide.”
“Being ‘right’ on taxes, education, health care, immigration and the economy fails to make up for the error of disregarding the value of a human life,” the bishop wrote. “It is a tragic irony that ‘pro-choice’ candidates have come to support homicide — the gravest injustice a society can tolerate — in the name of ‘social justice.’ ”
Be sure to tell them in that letter that your view is that using contraceptives is a mortal sin too, you POS fascist.

Why should we pretend not to notice when Gov. Palin's ideas make no sense?... Why should we ignore her inability to string together a series of coherent thoughts?... Why should we give her a pass on the most important issues of the day?... All the glaring defects so blatantly on display in her debate with Joe Biden -- and that make her candidacy so darkly comical -- would be the same if she were a hockey dad instead of a "hockey mom." In fact, the cynical attempt to foist Palin on the nation as a symbol of feminist progress is an insult to all women regardless of their political orientation.
There was a time when conservatives lamented the dumbing down of American culture. Preservation of basic standards in schools and workplaces compelled them -- or so they said -- to resist affirmative action for women and minorities. Qualifications mattered; merit mattered; and demagogic appeals for leveling were to be left to the Democrats.

There used to be a brand of western-style beans that had "Husband pleasin'" printed on the label.
"I believe we all deserve to know if the results, as reported, were accurate beyond a shadow of a doubt. That is the sensible and responsible question for the moment. And anybody who offers you reasons for why Clinton won (perhaps she did, we cannot know for sure at this time) or why Obama lost (perhaps he did, we cannot know for sure at this time) is doing nothing but irresponsibly speculating."
So, Wall Street Greed, growing poverty on Main Street, human rights and starvation in Darfur, tens of millions without health care in America, and the sin that is Iraq...all of those go backseat to abortion?
I'm very glad I left that church.

From 2006, an incident that illustrates modern conservatism in a nutshell:
http://scientificactivist.blogsp...ch-did-
not.html
Through my own investigations I have just discovered that George Deutsch, the Bush political appointee at the heart of administration efforts to censor NASA scientists (most notably to prevent James Hansen from speaking out about global warming), did not actually graduate from Texas A&M University. This should come as a surprise, since the media has implied otherwise, with even The New York Times describing the 24-year-old NASA public affairs officer, as “a 2003 journalism graduate of Texas A&M.” Although Deutsch did attend Texas A&M University, where he majored in journalism and was scheduled to graduate in 2003, he left in 2004 without a degree, a revelation that I was tipped off to by one of his former coworkers at A&M's student newspaper The Battalion. I later confirmed this discovery through the records department of the Texas A&M University Association of Former Students.
Deutsch’s former coworker informed me that in the summer of 2004, when Deutsch was the Opinion Editor for The Battalion, he was offered a position in George W. Bush’s presidential reelection campaign. The position was apparently too good to turn down, so Deutsch not only left his editorial post, but he also left A&M completely. Deutsch's coworker was not aware of him returning to A&M to complete his education. I investigated this further, and through the Association of Former Students, I learned that George Deutsch never graduated from Texas A&M, and the last record of him was from June 9, 2004, when he withdrew.
At this point, while I am unaware of whether Deutsch graduated from college at all, it is clear that he did not graduate from A&M, and he may have intentionally misled people to believe that he did. The idea that NASA let a 24-year-old journalism major, with no experience in science or technology, other than writing a few articles about video games, determine what scientists were able to communicate to the public was pretty bad. The fact that he was censoring scientific information on global warming and the big bang made things more interesting, especially since he was a political appointee doing this to prevent challenges to the Bush administration’s policies. But now, finding out that he did not even graduate from Texas A&M, and may not have graduated from college at all, is absolutely outrageous. George Deutsch, as I wrote before, needs to be removed from this post immediately.
---
He resigned.
Hey Butler - was Deutsch a buddy of yours at A&M? I figure you're about the same age.

John McCain is not only clueless about the economy but he is clueless about American jobs & workers.

That's terrible! Now, if he just wanted to send these "terrorists who target their own country" arms and money like Reagan did with the Contras, that would be fine and dandy...

Karin I was in a pretty rough part of Allentown.
A lot of shuttered factories and poor folk.
Maybe I'll try that area on my next trip to PA. They said they needed people to work the phones at the office when I got there-they already had dozens going out door to door, so that's what I did, But honestly, it's my least favorite thing. I would much rather walk around a sketchy neigborhood than cold call people any day.

=================================
Gov. Sarah Palin's husband is planning to speak to an investigator looking into abuse-of-power allegations against the governor, Todd Palin's lawyer said Saturday. He previously refused to testify under subpoena in a separate probe.
Attorney Thomas Van Flein said he asked the investigator, Anchorage attorney Timothy Petumenos, to reserve the third week of October to interview Todd Palin, but a date has not been set because he is waiting to hear back from Petumenos.
Todd Palin refused to testify under subpoena last month in a separate investigation by the Alaska Legislature. Petumenos is heading a parallel probe by the Alaska State Personnel Board into whether Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee, acted improperly when she fired Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan this summer. Both are looking into whether Palin, her husband and her aides pressured Monegan to fire a state trooper who was involved in a contentious divorce from Palin's sister and then fired Monegan when he wouldn't dismiss the trooper. Palin says Monegan was ousted over budget disagreements. The McCain-Palin campaign has said that the Legislative Council's investigation is being manipulated to damage the governor before the Nov. 4 election. The investigator leading that probe, retired prosecutor Steven Branchflower, is due to release his findings Friday. That release could be blocked by the Alaska Supreme Court, which will hear arguments next week in an emergency appeal by five Republican lawmakers trying to halt Branchflower's report. An Anchorage judge recently dismissed that lawsuit along with an attempt by several of the governor's aides to quash subpoenas issued for their testimony in the Legislature's investigation.
Todd Palin was not part of the attempt to quash the subpoenas, but the decision may affect whether he speaks to Branchflower. Van Flein said the Supreme Court's decision in the appeal next week is one of several factors that will go into deciding whether he does. The two investigators could interview Todd Palin together or Branchflower could use Petumenos' interview in his own investigation, Van Flein said, though Branchflower is scheduled to end his probe at least a week before the planned interview."I've asked (Branchflower) to contact me so we can discuss things," Van Flein said.
Sarah Palin originally agreed to cooperate with the Legislature's investigation. But after she joined the GOP ticket, she said the probe had become tainted by politics and filed a complaint against herself with the personnel board, which she says has the proper authority to investigate ethics allegations against the governor.

Well of course the war against the Taliban can't be won. They are a home grown group in their own land. Our only legitimate claim against them was that they gave sanctuary to bin Ladin. We never had the right to drive them from the government of Afghanistan.
Someday America will learn that it can't just organize the world the way they would like it without the cooperation of the rest of the world. Disband all foreign bases, return all American military to US soil. We're not withdrawing from the world we're simply going to stop trying to beat it into submission to our will. It may be a hundred years or more before some places are willing to deal with us again. So be it. America must learn humility.
