Admit Petraeus has won in Iraq.

Petraeus makes ghosts appear by their deaths, you can tell because you can see their breath: just like in Sixth Sense and you don't even have to watch Bruce Willis! And the military who is controlling all information coming out of Iraq since the reporters are confined to quarters out of intimidation, self-interest, and the basic lack of co-operation of the US Military and the contractors who have KILLED more newspeople in this war than in any other war (I believe)
So, it must be true! Just keep clapping and Tinkerbell will be fine. Keep digging into that pile of shit, there IS a pony there somewhere. Keep whistling past the graveyard, the beasties don't like it when you whistle. If you pull the covers over your head, the monsters can't get you. If the door to the closet is closed at night the monsters are locked in. Just don't leave it open. A flashlight has the power of a light saber.

An interesting tidbit I'd forgotten about the Bread and Roses Strike:
A local undertaker and a member of the Lawrence school board attempted to frame the strike leadership by planting dynamite in several locations in town a week after the strike began. He was fined $500 and released without jail time. William Wood, the owner of the American Woolen Company, who had made a large payment to the defendant under unexplained circumstances shortly before the dynamite was found, was not charged.
My Charlie likes to cuddle up under my chin in bed, and purr. Which is endearing, but after about 15 minutes he jumps up and goes away.
And comes back an hour later. And again.
No wonder I'm so tired in the morning.
I've tried locking him out of the bedroom, but he just scratches at the door till I get up and let him in.
Whoever described them as "feline overlords" wasn't kidding.

But the labor movement is dead and has been for a long time. Until people are willing to stop undercutting it and actually work to support: it will stay dead. But as far as I can tell, they will not. So.

Walmart hires retarded and indigent and they manage to do a great job.
From the e-mails of the founder of whole foods: I don't see WalMart as a threat to Whole Foods. Rather, I believe that WalMart will ultimately increase Whole Foods' sales. Most Whole Foods core customers don't like WalMart. Why not? Too big. Too dirty. Too ugly. Bad service. Lack of knowledge about products. An underpaid workforce resulting in a high ratio of unenthusiastic and poorly trained part-time employees. (He goes on to say that WalMart focuses on price at the expense of everything else, with the result that they sell a narrow range of crap, but cheaply. We would add that Target has extremely good stuff at prices competitive with WalMart, and that nowadays there is no longer any special advantage to shopping at WalMart.)

This has nothing to do with "where I'm coming from". Here are the facts of Taft-Hartley:

I don't see it being at all obvious that the US has done wonderful good for 231 years. With the possible exceptions of World War II, which included the Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, the Marshall plan, and the successful containment of Soviet Communism, we've acted entirely within our own self-interest, every time, human rights, national sovereignty and, indeed, democracy be damned. Growing up, my family was never a member of a union, and we really never knew anybody who was in a union.
But when I had a great consulting gig at Ford, I didn't cross the picket when they struck.
I just knew they had more at stake than I did. Hell, I could get another large coin assignment the next day if I wanted. They couldn't.
That was in the 90's.
Since then, as a software developer, I *can't* now just get another well paying gig. There always seems to be somebody, somehwere who will claim to deliver the same service for half my rate.
That the final code is indecipherable shit and doesn't work, doesn't seem to bother anybody looking to cut their IT budget at bonus time.
You do get *tons* of software rehab jobs, though.
The current bidness cycle of software development is just in chaos right now.

Omaha beach was chosen 'cause that's where resistance was stiffist, and casualties were most horrific.
Still, casualties that day overall were much lower than Allied estimates while planning the invasion. Given the FUBAR the plan turned into that day, the amount killed by the Germans was amazingly low, actually. German high command incompetence, top down, contributed greatly to our success.

The Israel Police decided Friday to delay its recommendation on whether to indict Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for suspected impropriety in the sale of Bank Leumi, until after next week's U.S.-sponsored Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland.
Olmert, who was serving as finance minister at the time of the sale, is suspected of interfering in the privatization of the bank to benefit a friend, Australian tycoon Frank Lowy. The prime minister was questioned under caution in the affair last month.

Dr. Warren, an evangelical Christian with strong ties to the conservative Christian community, attributes much of the initial success of eHarmony to its being promoted through James Dobson's Focus on the Family radio show. In 2005 eHarmony sought to distance itself from Dobson and Focus on the Family, largely in an effort to broaden the market share of Warren's books and that of eHarmony according to Warren. After Warren publicly distanced himself from Focus on the Family and purchased back the copyright from his earlier books from the organization, Dobson told his radio audience on May 26th, 2005, "I introduced Dr. Warren and his books — and eHarmony, more recently — to our listeners specifically because he was and it was decidedly Christian in nature," ... "Dr. Warren is anxious to change that direction. So ... we will go our separate ways ... with reluctance and regret."

Counting in tody's election is not over, but it appears that Australia has thrown the conservative government that dragged it into Iraq, out on its ass, comprehensively.
Even more tellingly, the sitting (and at one time immensely popular) Prime Minister, the execrable John Howard, appears to have been been beaten in his own electorate. Tat is, he is unemployed, not merely the leader of the opposition party.
Extremely humiliating, for Bush's Antipodean deputy ass-kisser. Only the second time in Australia's history that a sitting PM has been booted by his local community. Richly deserved.

"I hope the good people of Australia find Rudd to be less of a disappointment than Pelosi has been."
Australia has one thing that America seems to lack: a professional, apolitical public service, which does most of the heavy lifting.
By and large, the elected parliamentarians are amateurs. Politicians maybe. Smoove-n-sleazy, definitely. But they don't know shit about running a successful organisation, let alone a country's economy or its international relations. Nevertheless, so long as the parliamentarians are not completely deranged, as Howard was by the end, the public servants can translate their stupid stump-speeches into something approaching value-for-money, for all.
Howard's problem was that he forgot that government, unlike 'politics', is an actual profession.
Iraq is a case in point: snake-oil salesman Howard and his fellow traveller, 'president' Bush, thought Iraq was both winnable, and a 'winner'. Also because of her work, mimi has to often use legal methods to fix the situation so she is quite good at that. she just got a big amount of money from a case against a bank here and that is how she paid her vacation. she got 2 years salary. she is a lawyers dream client because she is so good at getting evidence for her case and she knows the laws.
Also, the nastiest people are the most popular here is one we noticed very early on.

Ben Stein is full of it. He is continually trying to pretend the housing crisis doesn't matter. The tech losses were investment losses, which hurt some people a great deal.
When people are losing their homes though, it's a profoundly more painful experience.
Many of the losses in tech stocks were offset by people whose portfolios were diverse so they didn't lose everything.
Housing is what fuels the consumer economy with the refinancing. A dying housing market has wings.

More or less, and pretty much everyone admits he's lost the seat. In the concession speech for the wider election he quite clearly stated he's retiring anyway, which he wouldn't have done if staying on as opposition leader.
It's still pretty close, see http://vtr.aec.gov.au/HouseDivis...s-13745-

About 80% of the preferences from the Greens will go to McKew (i.e. add 80% of the Greens figure to McKew), but even in the unlikely event of Howard winning there will be an immediate by-election since he's retiring, and I can't see McKew losing that.
