Americans actually LIKE that pesky constitution.

JeffCO-- My first thought about volunteering with my local (and generally useless) DNC was: I wanna be in charge of the registration issue.

But you are exactly right: It needs to be addressed nationally and publicly as soon as possible.

http://thumbsnap.com/v/K10C1U1I.jpg

GravatarActually, I'm kind of surprised Digby didn't mention what McCain said Thursday about the ruling:

It obviously concerns me . . . but it is a decision the Supreme Court has made. Now we need to move forward. As you know, I always favored closing of Guantanamo Bay and I still think that we ought to do that.

Yesterday he then decided it exceeded Dred Scott and Bush v. Gore and "Three Generations of imbeciles is enough!" to rocket to the top of the Worst Decisions Evah! chart.

Huh. Flip flop much, Senator?

GravatarRalphie -- so it's missing you, I guess?

No, it's starting now. Not happy.

GravatarJust this week I heard an otherwise rational and definitely Obama-supporting academic say of McCain - "He's not such a bad guy, though I like Obama more I could vote for him. He's got that record of being a reformer even in his own party, and despite what he's saying now I'm sure he would have to change things."

Since he already stated he was voting for Obama, I didn't bother to smack him upside the head with the reality stick, but I did wonder how many like him are out there.

Rank and file Republicans in the House of Representatives are tens of millions of dollars short of meeting fundraising targets set by their own campaign committee in advance of the November elections, according to figures circulating among the leadership, heightening concerns inside the party about major losses in November.

McCains report more than $100,000 in credit card debt
http://thehill.com/campaign-2008...2008-06- 13.html

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and his wife reported more than $100,000 of credit card liabilities, according to financial disclosure documents released Friday.
The presidential candidate and his wife Cindy reported piling up debt on a charge card between $10,000 and $15,000. His wife’s solo charge card has between $100,000 and $250,000 in debt to American Express.

Another charge card with American Express, this one for a “dependent child,” is carrying debt in the range of $15,000 and $50,000.

Cindy McCain reported a wealth of assets, including properties in Arizona and one she sold in La Jolla, Calif. for more than $1 million in profit.

In addition to his Senate salary, McCain received an annual pension from the U.S. Navy that is worth more than $58,000.

Democratic candidate, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), reported no liabilities in his annual financial disclosures.

More than that! it's at least $100,000 and as much as $225,000 on two cards.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/1...r=1& oref=slogin

Senators John McCain and Barack Obama released their Senate financial disclosure statements on Friday, revealing that Mr. McCain and his wife had at least $225,000 in credit card debt and that Mr. Obama and his wife had put more than $200,000 into college funds for their daughters.

The McCains are rich and owe money on credit cards, while the Obamas are doing well off his book royalties they are providing for their children's future. Just about suns up the difference between the Rethugs and the Dems.

Well, he was right when he says he knows nothing of economic matters.

GravatarNYT:

The bulk of the McCains’ obligations stemmed from a pair of American Express credit cards that are held in Cindy McCain’s name. According to the disclosure reports, which present information on debts in a range rather than providing a precise figure, Mrs. McCain owed $100,000 to $250,000 on each card.

Another charge card, held by what was described as a “dependent child,” had also accumulated debts of $15,000 to $50,000. In addition, a credit card held jointly by the couple was carrying $10,000 to $15,000 in debt, the filing indicated, at a stiff 25.99 percent interest rate.

"Before his tour of duty in Vietnam, McCain had married a model from Philadelphia, Carol Shepp. While he was imprisoned, she was in an auto wreck, thrown through her car's windshield and left seriously injured.

After his return to America, McCain had an extramarital affair with Cindy Lou Hensley, whose father owned Hensley & Co., a Phoenix-based liquor company that is the nation's second largest Anheuser-Busch distributor. McCain and Shepp were divorced in 1980, and he married his millionaire mistress the following month."

GravatarAre his sleeves rolled up? Does he have a bunch of idle national guard standing behind him as props? Oh wait, that'd be how Bush does it.

The WH propaganda functionaries would take National Guardsman off the sandbagging lines and have them stand around idle for hours to be props.

In the meantime, they'd halt all relief convoys into the area, shut down all messing facilities, and bring to a standstill any water pumping operations while the Dear Leader is anywhere within a 100 miles of those operations.

GravatarI was kind of dead threaded because I was looking for an audio clip.
To David Derbes: Thanks.
I met some very interesting people at the NCMR in Minn. just sitting down at a table got me introduced to a woman who knows how to challenge a church that violates their 501 c. 3 status. I also had a great conversation with a lesbian pastor who used to argue on TV with the right wing ministers.

People who abuse their 501 c. 3 status piss me off. So many 501 c. 3s work very hard to do good works and to be non-partisan. Right wing people use them to avoid paying taxes.

I also heard some people from the Southern poverty law center and from the US District attorneys' office who actually go after people who spew hate speech. All things that I needed and wanted to know more about.

But you know one thing that I remember clearly? A large black woman who was standing by the elevator on the way out of the convention who said, "Thank you for fighting the good fight."
I don't know if she recognized me (it was after my talk) or she was saying it to people who attended the convention, but it was really quite wonderful and it cheered me up during a time where I had just re-listened to some "Hot Talk" clips.

Here are two that I re-listened to that depressed me. Both of these people are still broadcasting on ABC Radio station K S F O which is now owned by Citadel Broadcasting which is owned by Disney.

About 4 minutes for context and stuff. This was them trying to EXPLAIN that I was taking their comments out of context, which you will see that they didn't add ANY context nor did he apologize for what he said.

And here is Brian S ussman
talking about shooting a CD of the Dixie Chix. Of course it is all in good fun. He's not actually talking about shooting the Dixie Chix, just the CD of the Dixie Chix, so that makes it okay in his mind and in the mind of his management.

I'm sure it's on Optima, rather than on Teh Card(tm).  Which means it's being used effectively as the household budget.  Probably 9%.  These would be accreted charges, not one big blow out at Restoration Hardware and Gucci's at the Biltmore.  They did, after all, just sell the house off Central and buy the rehabbed condo on Camelback - Atrios is discovering even now that buying a new house means endless purchases of all kind of stuff.  Caulk, among other things.

A little while ago, I heard a little girl's voice in my ear, saying "Hi!" I felt a man's arms wrap around my neck. I thought D had come home and was hugging me, and I woke up. Tried to roll over to hug him back. Couldn't move. Tried to say, "Hey, lemme go." Couldn't speak. All of a sudden, he let go, and I got up. Strangest fucking feeling I've ever had.

The talk radio station here has someone named Halerin H. Hill on from probably 6-10am. He proposes to be "independent," but he leans to the right. His black too, so that makes him interesting when he talks about Obama. He is very popular with local listeners, and does a lot of public/paid appearances around the area. From then on out it's Bootz, Limpaugh, Hannity, etc. It's a Fox station I think, at least the national news is. I think its 100.3 on our local FM dial. I usually only listen when I'm in the car--which isn't very often since I work at home.

GravatarI'd like to share a favorite little story about the very last time Timmeh made me throw something at the TV.

'kay?

It was the night Obama clinched the nomination and Timmeh was talking about the sharp divisions between Obama and McCain on policy issues and saying: "Can you imagine? Maybe this year we can actually have an election campaign that's actually based on real issues, with clear choices!"

As if he had nothing whatever to do with the cheapening of political discourse. In fact, he was the ringmaster of that particular circus. Of course.

That's all from me. Who wants to be next?

Isn't this a nice wake, by the way?

GravatarToday it got up to about 108F.

I just got two more fans to replace those that were old BigBoxMart crap. This helps the swampy cooler work, exhaust some of the air, and it can move more cool air into the house.

GravatarPlantsman (and everyone else) thank you for your kind thoughts and words.

Unlike Thinly Veiled, my loss was not unexpected, and in some ways a relief. My dad was, in days of yore, an athlete who was a member of a state championship HS basketball team. His physical deterioration over the last six months or so was heartbreaking.

I won't go into detail, but the "I've fallen and I can't get up" ads were being replayed over and over at the house. We were on the verge of establishing first name relationships with the local paramedics.

He did pass quietly in his sleep, which is a minor blessing.

For a second there I thought she was dead.

Then I googled her name.

GravatarSomeone mentioned how many folks came here after Timmeh passed

Is that passive-voiced euphemism for dying really necessary?

GravatarATDH, it is not a blessing to discount. You will find few go so peacefully, and wish they had, I imagine.

GravatarI feel bad for Russert's family and friends. What drove me nuts yesterday was all of the MSM (Williams, Brokaw, Mitchell (aka Mrs. Greenspan), Gregory) talking about themselves and Russert. They see themselves as newsworthy in this event. I admit I am jaded against them, but I tried to listen with an open mind Their "importance" and newsworthiness is a figment of their imaginations. Yesterday I saw what the real problem with the news media is: them. I didn't like MTP...never did and I think this group led us into a lousy war and coddled a pathetic president. They'll continue their work as they deify McCain.

GravatarThinlyVeiled, after what you've been through today, it's probably to be expected.

GravatarNo, I saw her in a TV Land ad and was reminded how much of my young life she affected. I recall when she first appeared on the Gary Moore Show.

Gravatarhellkitty, that article described it perfectly. At least I know I'm not freaking out or losing my damn mind. It wasn't entirely unpleasant, though it was kind of scary.

ATDH, I'm so sorry about your Dad.

I was a member of a list (Aware Sleep Paralysis) for a couple of years and it was amazing how similar the experiences were, from the hag and the stick man as part of the hallucinations, to the incredible fear that got generated.

Interestingly, more than a few members of the list reported that their episodes included alien abductions and anal probes, which might explain a lot of those reports a few years back.

GravatarEven though I have free HBO, I only have basic cable. This has been no problem since I decided not to watch the corporate media. Throughout this long memorial to Tim, I realize how out of touch I am with what the general voting public is seeing (or being smothered by.) It has made me aware that I should rethink my choice before the election, and yet I know I will be immediately aggravated by the media.

GravatarMy mom died while she was in the backyard feeding the birds.

She just passed out and that was it.

GravatarIt is crude, and loveless -- I can easily use it for people I did not love.

GravatarTheir "importance" and newsworthiness is a figment of their imaginations. Yesterday I saw what the real problem with the news media is: them.

The whole obscene business the last 24 or so hours is a perfect depiction of the total lack of proportion and parochial world view they bring to all their coverage of the news.

I think they honestly believe that all over America people got up this morning and turned on their TVs eager to hear the latest "developments" in the ongoing saga of the death of Tim Russert.

It's way beyond bizarre... it's sick. And they make our country sick. And they need to stop.

GravatarThe euphemism (and passive voice) of "passed away" is interesting.

I don't mind using it with my dad.

But with my brother, who's been gone 20 years, a victim of the AIDS epidemic, it doesn't seem to be the right way to describe it. It needs more immediacy.

Death after a long life is the way of things.

Death only as you're getting started is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

GravatarMy mom, who is 85 and so cool, cleaned out her attic a few years ago. She put everything on her carport and told the person who came by with a truck, "if you don't take what you don't think is valuable, you can leave without taking anything." He took it all.

She didn't want us to have to clean out her attic, although there is still quite a bit left up there. things she knew we would probably want.
