GravatarSeventeen Chinese prisoners who have been held for nearly seven years in Guantánamo Bay will be informed on Monday that they could spend the rest of their lives behind bars, even though they face no charges and have been told by a judge they should be freed.

No country is willing to accept them and the US justice department has now blocked moves for them to be allowed to go to the US mainland, where they had been offered a home by refugee and Christian organisations.

The men's lawyer, Sabin Willett, is flying to Guantánamo Bay this weekend to break the news to the men, who are members of the Uighur ethnic group seeking autonomy from China. In a blunt and angry letter to justice department lawyers, Willett spelled out what he thought of the way the men had been treated.

"After years of stalling and staying and appellate gamesmanship, you pleaded no contest - they are not enemy combatants," Willett has written. "You have never charged them with any crime."

GravatarWith a combination of a summer drought, poor irrigation and rising global food prices, a famine is unveiling in Afghanistan with third of Afghans are suffering chronic food insecurity, a British think-tank warned on Friday, October 31.

"While the eyes of the world have focused on violence which is increasingly terrorist in character, an estimated 8.4 million Afghans, perhaps a third of the nation, are now suffering from 'chronic and transitory food insecurity'," Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) analyst Paul Smyth said in a press briefing on its website.

"Whatever the effect of insurgent violence on the UN-mandated mission in Afghanistan, it is widespread hunger and malnutrition that will place a greater obstacle in its progress."

RUSI said that many Afghan have already started migrating from their areas in search of food.

"Some are eating grass and a tiny number have died of starvation."

British charity Oxfam warned earlier this year that around five million Afghans are facing food shortages.

RUSI warned that a famine will blow out when the snowy winter season begins.

GravatarThe day started like every other in Hurriya, a working-class district in Baghdad. By 7 a.m., vendors had begun opening the stalls that line the sidewalks and offer makeup, books, toys, phones and just about anything else to shoppers browsing one of the neighborhood's informal outdoor markets.

But at about 2 p.m., bulldozers guarded by Iraqi security forces showed up. Some witnesses said U.S. troops also were present. The heavy machines moved quickly to destroy the illegal marketplace, which had grown to cover a large section of sidewalk and is similar to scores of others across the capital.

The vendors manning the illegal stalls are not uneducated. Most of those in Hurriya have university degrees or at least high school diplomas, but they have been unable to find decent jobs because of the effect of the war on Iraq's economy. For those who have jobs, the pay often is not enough to support a family and pay for a home, so they turned to street-selling to supplement their incomes.

"I don't know what to do," said Udai, a 28-year-old teacher, as he surveyed the ruins of his small kiosk, which had sold hair accessories and women's underwear until the Oct. 21 raid. Udai, who did not want his full name published, got married two years ago and is awaiting the birth of his first child. His habit was to work as a schoolteacher from morning until afternoon, and then open his kiosk at about 4 p.m. and remain until nightfall. "I established this job because my salary will not be enough" when the baby comes, said Udai as other vendors and passers-by picked through the market's remains.

Sellers said they should have been given a warning of what was to come. "How should I support my family now? Shall I steal?" lamented Alaa, 36, whose stall also was crushed.

Moonbootica back from Cairo

All because Bush had to prove that his dick was bigger than his daddy's.

GravatarWhat weather?

It's raining again.

Gravatarwow even when Iraqis try and make the best of a bad situation they get trodden on - Some locals said there had been rumors that a raid was planned. But they were shocked and angry at the level of destruction, and many said the Iraqi security forces accompanying the bulldozers treated them harshly. Some accused Prime Minister Nouri Maliki of waging war against poor people and said this was a sign of his government's failure to help regular Iraqis struggling to recover from nearly six years of war.

But a spokesman for the Baghdad municipal government, Hakim Abdulzahra, said such moves are necessary to prevent what he called the "mutilation that turns Baghdad into a village." Abdulzahra denied the sellers' claims they had no warning. In fact, he said the city goes out of its way to issue warnings to illegal vendors and usually gives them multiple warnings before removing them.

According to Abdulzahra, vendors are supposed to have contracts with the municipality and pay fees for their places of business. There are rules about where such kiosks can be erected to prevent them from blocking sidewalks and streets. He warned that the destruction of the Hurriya market is part of a campaign aimed at clearing Baghdad of illegal vendors. "How long can we continue to spoil them?" said Abdulzahra. "They are violators."

In addition to the stalls, the Iraqi forces also destroyed generators and sun shades used to power the market and protect sellers and shoppers from the blazing sun.

GravatarLets see:

In what could become the template for a new form of Franklin Roosevelt's Fireside Chats if the Democratic candidate wins on Tuesday, Barack Obama: American Stories attracted 33.5 million viewers on broadcast and cable outlets on Wednesday, according to figures released by Nielsen Media Research on Thursday. NBC attracted the most viewers, 9.85 million -- 55 percent more than tuned in the previous week for Knight Rider. It was also some 2 million more than watched last season's final broadcast of American Idol. In reporting the results, the New York Times commented, "The audience for Mr. Obama's program far exceeded the expectations of television executives _ and many political pundits who questioned whether Mr. Obama was engaging in overkill in buying a half hour on so many networks." In the Washington Post, TV critic Lisa de Moraes observed, "'The Barack Obamamercial' is the first hit of this otherwise pretty dull television season." Later that evening, Obama's appearance on Comedy Central's The Daily Show produced the show's biggest audience ever -- 3.6 million viewers.

Even the stranger, the American, has mercy on Iraqi people more than it [the Iraqi government] has," he said bitterly.

GravatarAL TANF, Iraq-Syria Border, October 30 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency has rushed assistance to hundreds of Palestinian refugees stuck in camps on the Iraq-Syria border after heavy rain and flooding caused chaos and misery.

Rainstorms on Tuesday night left tents inundated with water and sewage, possessions soaked and electricity supplies cut at Al Tanf, a settlement housing almost 800 people in the narrow no man's land between Iraq and Syria. The small mosque was damaged by fire, but there were no human casualties

"This is the closest to hell I can imagine," said Mutassem Hayatla, a UNHCR field officer who stayed in the camp during the downpour. "With no electricity, the camp was full of the sound of crying, terrified children. We did our best, but it was a blessing when the night was over."

Nine-year-old Aya said she was terrified. "The lights were all off, there was water everywhere. My mother was crying. She is pregnant and the baby will come soon. Please get us out before my brother is born. I am scared he will die if we have to live here after she delivers."

The situation was even worse in Al Waleed, a nearby camp hosting more than 1,400 refugees just inside Iraq, where more than 100 families were left homeless after their tents were destroyed in the storm. UNHCR was rushing supplies on Wednesday to both sites, but it was taking longer to get to Al Waleed due to security considerations.

TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, October 30, 2008

John McCain and Barack Obama, if you're wooing a population of registered voters who are young, female and drawn to men in suits, then Allegheny County has 675 ladies ready to pull your lever.

They're convicted streetwalkers, escorts and brothel babes collared in 2000 and from 2003-2006, uncovered by the Trib.

Based on the prostitutes' voter registration cards, they're destined to become Obama girls in November. That's because 78 percent of them registered as Democrats. Countywide, Dems make up only about 62 percent of voters, according to the Division of Elections.

GravatarGEORGIA UPDATE:

On Oct. 22, a member of the Board of Elections predicted 1.2 Million early votes, and 3.4 million total votes. SoS Karen Handel is predicting 4.7 million total votes. (There are approximately 5.5 million registered voters.)

As of the close of early voting yesterday, 1,994,990 votes have been recorded.

We don't register by party in GA, but note that, as a rule, GOP GOTV focuses on mailing in absentee ballots, DEM GOTV focuses on in-person early voting.

Number of mail-in ballots returned: 221,238
Number of ballots voted in person: 1,773,752

45% of black women, and 38% of black men registered to vote have already voted.

Black turnout has held steady at 35% of the total for the entire early voting period (it’s normally 25%). Kos has stated a few times that if it stays above 30%, Obama wins – we shall see.

GravatarNov. 4th for Lubyanka and other assorted trolls:

Days like these 14 SEPTEMBER 1665
Compiled by Ian Irvine

J TILLISON writes to his master, the Dean of St Paul's, about the London Plague: 'The custom was, in the beginning, to bury the dead in the night only; now, both night and day will hardly be enough time to do it. For the last week, mortality did too apparently evidence that, that the dead were piled in heaps above ground for some hours together, before either time could be gained or place to bury them in. One week the general distempers are botches and boils; the next week as clear-skinned as may be; but death spares neither. Now taken with a vomiting and looseness, and within two or three days almost a general raging madness. One while patients used to linger four or five days, at other times not forty-eight hours; and at this very time we find it more quick than ever it was. Many are sick, and few escape. The poorer sort was most afflicted; now the richer bear a share.'

Checking out "the Confluence", which is one of the big PUMA blogs, one gets the impression that a lot of them are disgruntled former kossacks.

Certainly, there was a period of time over at dkos where Clinton supporters were treated brutally and driven out. The aggressive anti-Clinton attacks popped up in the comments here, though to a far lesser extent.

Unfortunately, it seems the PUMAs seem to have mistaken a bunch of badly behaved assholes on blogs for the Obama campaign itself.

Gravatarblogging is a substitute for/expression of some deep, difficult personal reality that they cannot overcome.

The anti-Hillary diatribe did get overheated here at times this year. So I can see that there were severe interpretations of attacks on feminism.

I got hyperbolic at times as well, and for that I apologize. But to say that McCain's candidacy offers refuge for Hillary's supporters - let alone her platform of issues - is a flat-out lie.

GravatarThis is when Palin really turned my stomach.

She had a child to make a political statement, to piss off pro-choice people:

"Palin also said the birth of her mentally disabled son Trig allowed her to put her heartfelt pro-life beliefs into practice.

Palin said giving birth to a baby with Down syndrome was "this opportunity for me to really be walking the walk and not just talking the talk. There's purpose in this also and for a greater good to be met there."

"I was about 13 weeks along when I found out that Trig would be born with Down Syndrome," Palin explained. "To be honest with you, it scared me though and I knew it would be a challenge."

Palin said she prayed during the pregnancy that God would give her the strength to take care of Trig and "just the second he was born, there was this absolute confirmation that that prayer was answered" as she "just fell in love with him."

GravatarAnother great t-storm memory just popped back in my memory.

Sometime around 1987, an overnight supercell storm dumped close to a foot of rain in parts of the NW burbs of Chicago. Meanwhile, the cloud-to-cloud lightning flashed in an orange-white spark - dancing across tens of miles of atmospheric uplift. Wish I'd had a camera that night.

Gravatarthe PUMA problem is very frustrating to me. on the one hand, i agree that there was an unhappy amount of sexism in the progressive blogosphere with respect to her campaign. and as a hard core lefty, i am of course not totally happy with a great deal that obama has said or implied he's going to do. but i do wonder if many PUMAs are insane, on drugs, or republican plants. there's a stupid stubborness to them, as well as an inability to recognize that 'it is what it is,' and we have few choices other than to work with the dems we've got. the people who say they'll vote for mcspain now that HRC isn't in the game anymore are just whack. i lean towards thinking they're plants b/c of the damage they do to the notion that there is value in critiquing obama for his centrist positions. this is a time when left leaning folks should be coming together, and the PUMA folks are doing the devil's work of keeping otherwise common of mind folk apart and hating on each other.

GravatarOur local weatherman - Tom Skilling of the Tribune WGN - loves nothing better than a big hairy thunderstorm, or better yet, a big honkin' blizzard!! Loves it, loves it, loves it. His forecasts show it - he gets all hopeful when there's a chance of bad weather, and he tries to creep us all out, and then he's so disappointed when it slips by to our south.

GravatarFloating Tit clouds are cool.

Gravatarwhile the WaPo watches its bottom line tank, editoress debbie howell knows why. it's because they're too liberal:

Neither the hard-core right nor left will ever be satisfied by Post coverage -- and that's as it should be. But it's true that The Post, as well as much of the national news media, has written more stories and more favorable stories about Barack Obama than John McCain. Editors have their reasons for this, but conservatives are right that they often don't see their views reflected enough in the news pages.

you know what to expect the second obama is elected. and frankly, i'm glad. i can't wait for when the wapo is finally forced to close up shop. keep on deluding yourself, debbie. eventually you'll be in the unemployment line with the rest of your fellow prisoners.

GravatarI figure there are probably all of about 50 PUMAs. People should really stop paying them so much attention.

Gravatar Editors have their reasons for this, but conservatives are right that they often don't see their views reflected enough in the news pages.

A big part of the rationale seems to be that, if McCain wins, Clinton "automatically" becomes the Democratic nominee in 2012. As for the damage a McCain presidency would do in the meantime, we don't have to worry about that, since he'll have a Democratic congress.

The prospect for an eventual Clinton presidency trumps all other considerations for a lot of them, evidently.

GravatarA big part of the rationale seems to be that, if McCain wins, Clinton "automatically" becomes the Democratic nominee in 2012. As for the damage a McCain presidency would do in the meantime, we don't have to worry about that, since he'll have a Democratic congress.

As of yesterday Pigboy seemed to believe they were still related.

But if you look at liberal blogs from as early as October 16 it was obvious the same day the connection was absurd.

As a footnote, let it be known that Travellers was great. Claims guys came out the next day and cut me a check on the spot, and covered a rental car for two weeks.

GravatarFrom Broderella's column today

Despite the political and journalistic consensus that McCain was finished, he refused to quit and almost single-handedly resurrected his candidacy in a way no one had done since Ronald Reagan took on President Gerald Ford in 1976. O

Am I the only one who sees that McCain is the nominee b/c 1) Huckabee took out Romney in a way no one foresaw 2) the Right swallowed its hate and voted for him b/c they knew that only the "war hero" stood a chance against BO or HRC?

GravatarIf Broder's writing a comeback column then the next logical step is a column on what Obama did wrong.

He didn't respond to

-The socialism and redistribution charge, which would have been easy. Positively defending the rationales for the welfare state and negatively pointing out that Alaska has nationalized oil wealth and McCain voted for the bailout.

-Didn't counter the Ayers smears with Liddy and Alaska Independence, and even pagan priests.

He let all these things go because he was ahead, letting his lead erode rather than defending his lead.

Gravatari think the rethugs are in the shit b/c of macacawitz's unexpected moment of cellphone camera fame. he was The One they planned to run, imho. his fall meant they had to go the B squad, and we're all seeing how well that's turning out. mcspain was never meant to be more than a foil, and point of contrast.

GravatarThe world's largest women-only university is being built in Saudi Arabia; with a campus that will cover 8m square metres and accommodate 40,000 students.

Due to open in 2010, the Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University, on the outskirts of Riyadh, will offer courses in subjects that Saudi women find difficult to study at universities where gender segregation is enforced.

It will have a library, conference centres, 15 academic faculties, laboratories and a 700-bed hospital. There will be facilities for research into nanotechnology, bio-sciences and information technology.

At the foundation-laying ceremony last week, which was attended by King Abdullah, the finance minister, Ibrahim Al-Assaf, told reporters the site would include housing for university staff, mosques, a school, a kindergarten and theme parks.

Assaf described the project as a "milestone" in the kingdom's history. The higher education minister, Khaled al-Anqari, added: "The king's presence shows his generous support for women's empowerment and his keen desire to promote higher education."

Seconded.

GravatarWith the cable TV so-called news shows all a-dither over Sarah Palin's celebrity makeover, you might have missed the latest news from Iraq, where another $100 million of our tax dollars has gone into the sewer, literally. If the RNC wants to spend $150,000 of its donors' money on taking the wilderness out of the woman, so be it. At least that money is accounted for and has achieved its goal -- the pit bull looks as sharp as, well, a hound's tooth in her pricey new threads.

No such luck in Iraq, the forgotten stepchild of this surreal presidential campaign.

The Special Inspector for Iraq Reconstruction, an independent federal office led by Stewart W. Bowen (who has consistently released damning reports on the lost billions and failed projects in Iraq that go virtually unnoticed by most Americans), reports that a sewage treatment plant being constructed in Fallujah with American dollars and know-how is three times over budget, three years behind schedule, and may never be used.

Even if the $100 million wastewater plant were to overcome its many deficiencies, like no reliable electricity to run the required pumps and purification tanks, it will treat only one-third of Fallujah's households, not the entire city as originally intended. That's 9,300 homes at a cost of $10,000 each in American taxpayer dollars.

She seems genuinely not to like him, and the fact is that she knows a hell of a lot about Chicago politics. I don't think she'll bring herself to vote for McCain (she's not crazy), but my guess is that she'll stay at home (or more accurately, at the office.)

I've had several conversations with her about this (and indeed, she will owe me $5 Wednesday ) and I cannot persuade her to pull the lever for Barack.

I did, happily, a week ago, with my wife and father in law. My brother in law voted Thursday, the last day for Illinois early voting, in Evanston. Took two hours of waiting for him, about forty minutes for us.

Early voting goes on till Monday evening in Indiana.

Justin McKeating of Chicken Yogurt puts it way better than me: What’s the reason for the delay in equipping troops in Afghanistan properly? Did the invoice fall behind a filing cabinet or get left on a train by a feckless official? I mean it’s one thing to send men to their needless deaths when you’re trying to give political cover to a war crime but this is inexcusable, surely?

It suggests that political attitudes towards soldiers haven’t changed much since the Battle of the Somme. Do you think they still have those big maps on tables at the Ministry of Defence where they push toy divisions around with big sticks? It’s the best way to avoid seeing soldiers as human, I suppose.

GravatarI'm really, really rooting for Al Franken to take out Coleman, but if the gods offered me Saxby Chambliss's political head on a platter as compensation, I'd take it.

“There has always been a rush to the polls by African-Americans early,” he said at the square in Covington, a quick stop on a bus tour as the campaign entered its final week. He predicted the crowds of early voters would motivate Republicans to turn out. “It has also got our side energized, they see what is happening,” he said.

Gravatarmind you as i understand it lots of the MoD was privatized or sold off or the whole ethos imported and actual Civil Servant quality was degraded

GravatarThe funny thing is, if you read the posts made at PUMA blogs they have a very similar tone to the anti-Clinton diaries that used to pop up at dkos - the candidate is a MONSTER!!!!, and as proof we'll cite infomation culled from rightwing sources.

Yup and sad to say several of our strongest feminist posters no longer post here. I don't think they are PUMAs but it did get pretty damned ugly. Ugly enough that they no longer feel they want to be a part of this community. Like I said, it's sad.

GravatarPalin PWN3D by Pranksters.

Hilarity ensues.

GravatarI watched as Broder last night sobbed that Coleman and other senators were going to get beat because of Bush's unpopularity (which guess he's conceding would be bouncing back).
Maybe if they would have stood against Bush while he raped the constitution, started an unneeded war and wrecked the regulatory infrastructure, things wouldn't be so bad for them Tuesday.

Gravatardon't tell the wingnuts - Just days before the US elections, it is unlikely that US presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain will be sharing a stage.

But in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, their characters will be singing and dancing together when Obama, The Musical opens on Sunday.

The hour-long play is hotly awaited in a country where Mr Obama, whose father was Kenyan, is a wildly popular figure.

Those involved in the production are doing little to hide their sympathies.

Mr Obama, who has never lived in Kenya and has only come to the country on visits, is a national hero. A local beer has been named after him.

Scriptwriter and director George Orido complies with Kenyan preferences in his casting of Mr McCain, his running-mate Sarah Palin, and President George Bush.

"McCain comes in as the villain, the chief villain. His supporting cast are George Bush and Sarah Palin who are standing in Obama's way," the director says.

Exactly..they never get that they're leaning on the same lunatics, like those at American Spectator, who lived to try and remove Clinton from office. Amf they hated the whole Clinton family, including Chelsea.

I wonder how much they're pissed off at Geraldine Ferraro. It's got to be very lonely, hating the way they do.

The "Designing Woman" producer, Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, is still insane.

Gravatarah - the cnn show is "election countdown, the view from the right." being moderated by cbn mouthpiece.

i did hear about that. no view from the left, of course.

they are talking about muslims. like obama.

GravatarHeh. I was kind of underwhelmed by that downpour, but then I looked at the sat pix and saw that this is still only the warm frontal precip so far. The main even is still a few hours offshore. Good luck with that.

but it did get pretty damned ugly.

The thing is, I don't think there were a lot of strong Clinton haters here, it's just that those present were incredibly obxious, eager to inform us seemingly dozens of times every single day that "Clinton is a MONSTER!!!!", how she was conspiring to steal the nomination, make Obama unelectable, etc. etc. .

It was pretty sickening. The antics of one certain numeralled poster was as bad as any troll.

GravatarTime change tonight !

GravatarRoyal Bank of Scotland, which is being bailed out with £20bn of taxpayers' money, has signalled it is preparing to pay bonuses to thousands of staff despite government pledges to crack down on City pay.

The bank has set aside £1.79bn to cover "staff costs" - including discretionary bonuses - at its investment banking division for the first six months of the year alone. The same division caused a £5.9bn writedown that wiped out the bank's profits for the same period.

The government had demanded that boardroom directors at RBS should not receive bonuses this year and the chief executive, Sir Fred Goodwin, is walking away without a pay-off. But below boardroom level, RBS and other groups are preparing to pay bonuses to investment bankers who continue to generate profits.

The disclosure drew fierce criticism from Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman.

"The government said they would attach strict conditions on bonuses and it is very clear they are doing nothing of the kind.

"The banks are just making complete monkeys of them."

Can you give me an example of something so egregious that it merited abandoning this whole community? I mean, I know there were some offensive things said, but I sure can't see how any of them added up to any sort of consensus. In fact, I saw quite a few instances of certain individuals crossing the line and then receiving a chorus of pointed criticism for it from all sides.

I can't remember which columnist it was, Dionne maybe, who pointed out that Gary Bauer also named Jesus as his "favorite philosopher", but was able to explain why and discuss (his view of) Xianity as a philosophy. GravatarYou know, towards the end, Hillary was starting to show some pretty monster-like features. And I say that having started out in her camp, thinking Obama was just not ready for prime time. He managed to convince me otherwise, that he was up to the game and that she was too much a representative of the old guard of failed Democratic strategy.

GravatarWhat never ceases to amaze me about the RW Rethugs are two things: the inablity to remember the past, and the total disregard of what can happen in the future, i.e. Obama's illegal terrorist "aunt". I guess they forgot about how Eagleberger tried to screw Clinton for GHWBush in the 1992 election with the news that Clinton went to Russia as a college student. Of course, if the story of the aunt had gone on further, I am sure Clinton would be screaming to the press about how Bush's son was trying to screw Obama in the same way, and a story about Clinton's outrage would top the news stories for the day and cause commentators and voters alike to question whether there were gross illegalities involved to help out McCain/Palin. But, since they never anticipate the future, they destroyed their own meme: Cheney endorses McCain, and gives Obama brand new evidence of McCains 90% record of being tied to Bush. Talking points now abound. Sweet. Usually, I despise stupidity. But not this time.

IIRC, Bush was asked for his favorite "political philosopher," and that's why the reply of "Jesus" seemed a bit out of place, since he'd run Texas unlike anything out of the New Testament.

GravatarAs an aside, and off topic, Sinfonian has a birthday on Thursday. IIRC

GravatarBritain is heading for a more bruising start to the recession than it experienced during the last big downturn under John Major in the early 1990s, an economic thinktank warned yesterday.

Gordon Brown claims Britain is better placed to weather the downturn than it was under the Tories in the early 1990s, but the Institute for Fiscal Studies said that the public finances are deteriorating sharply.

As shadow chancellor George Osborne warned that Labour's plans to increase spending will fire a "cruise missile" at the heart of the economy, the IFS said that Britain's structural budget deficit was deteriorating "more sharply" than in the early phase of the 1990-91 recession.

The structural budget deficit is the shortfall between government revenue and spending. The IFS estimates that the deficit will be 3.6% of national income this year, compared with 2.6% at the same stage 18 years ago.

Obama looks to pick up ten states over Kerry's 2004 numbers.

McCain, not a single one.

Yeah, it's McCain in a walk.

GravatarIn a weird way, I think it was more about Bill Clinton than Hillary.

It was rough on people who supported Obama, to see the Big Dog, go balls to the wall. The SC comments were very hurtful coming from Bill Clinton.

There was some very bad sexism against Hillary. There was also a get out of the way thing against her, Obama is the annointed one.

On the other hand, when teh math was done, and Hillary was finished, I thought it was a bit patronizing of Hillary supporters to try to say in effect, let her pretend she can still win.

Some people here, but especially at DKOS did display vile sexism.

Some PUMAs are virulent racists.

I am glad the primaries are over.

GravatarWould you call McCain a monster? Or Bush a monster?
Echidne

If not, only because I tend to see that term in the context of "turning into a monster", i.e. having been on the side of right and then losing one's way. I never felt that Bush or McCain were ever right about anything. OK, I take it back. McCain was right about a handful of things, until he reversed himself on all of them out of political expediency. So I'd call him a monster now, except that he's such a pethetic old man that it would seem like giving him too much credit. Anyway, there is not really any pejorative term that I would apply to Hillary that I would have spared them, and plenty that I would call them in a heartbeat that I would never have applied to Hillary.

GravatarLOL!

GravatarSinfonian's b-day is a week after election day. I know. My boy and he were born on veteran's day.

I stand corrected, and weeping.

GravatarRick Davis says McCain has Obama just where he wants him.

Obama is running out of states if you follow out a traditional model. Today, he expanded his buy into North Dakota, Georgia and Arizona in an attempt to widen the playing field and find his 270 Electoral Votes. This is a very tall order and trying to expand into new states in the final hours shows he doesn't have the votes to win.

Also, there was this:

'We have destroyed 2 tanks, fighter planes, 2 helicopters and their shovels - We have driven them back."

"My feelings - as usual - we will slaughter them all"

"Our initial assessment is that they will all die"

GravatarThanks, Ali!

Gravatarso my republican friend at work turns out to be full of inaccurate fears implanted in him by some lying emails. he was sure that he had read that barack had said he would raise capital gains up to 38% and eliminate the exemption on the first half a mil

yet again, wingers are angry because they believe thr thing that is not so

GravatarI am glad the primaries are over.
trifecta

It was a tough primary battle and both candidates came out the better for it. Now it's over and Obama has proven himself to be a most excellent nominee and I'm sure he'll win. I think in the history books he'll be seen as either the second best politician of his time or even the first.
