"Whatever the effect of insurgent violence on the UN-mandated mission in Afghanistan, it is widespread hunger and malnutrition that will place a greater obstacle in its progress."
RUSI said that many Afghan have already started migrating from their areas in search of food.
"Some are eating grass and a tiny number have died of starvation."
British charity Oxfam warned earlier this year that around five million Afghans are facing food shortages.
RUSI warned that a famine will blow out when the snowy winter season begins.

My best pal just got back from Afghanistan and said the place was a mess. She visited several refugee camps, where people have little food and almost no blankets (winter is very harsh there).

On Oct. 22, a member of the Board of Elections predicted 1.2 Million early votes, and 3.4 million total votes. SoS Karen Handel is predicting 4.7 million total votes. (There are approximately 5.5 million registered voters.)
As of the close of early voting yesterday, 1,994,990 votes have been recorded.
We don't register by party in GA, but note that, as a rule, GOP GOTV focuses on mailing in absentee ballots, DEM GOTV focuses on in-person early voting.

Number of ballots voted in person: 1,773,752
45% of black women, and 38% of black men registered to vote have already voted.

My former brother-in-law's parents were Eastern European refugees who ended up in Morocco after WWII. He lived there for 5 years then they emigrated to the US. He's now retired and living in North Carolina with a flagpole on his front lawn with a Confederate flag flying. Go figure.

I was in a pickup going down I-90 that night - after the deluge passed us, the billowing clouds moved east - with the cloud tops defined in the pale blue-white glow of a near-full moon.
Meanwhile, the cloud-to-cloud lightning flashed in an orange-white spark - dancing across tens of miles of atmospheric uplift. Wish I'd had a camera that night.

Our local weatherman - Tom Skilling of the Tribune WGN - loves nothing better than a big hairy thunderstorm, or better yet, a big honkin' blizzard!! Loves it, loves it, loves it. His forecasts show it - he gets all hopeful when there's a chance of bad weather, and he tries to creep us all out, and then he's so disappointed when it slips by to our south.

Even if the $100 million wastewater plant were to overcome its many deficiencies, like no reliable electricity to run the required pumps and purification tanks, it will treat only one-third of Fallujah's households, not the entire city as originally intended. That's 9,300 homes at a cost of $10,000 each in American taxpayer dollars.

I wish I were kidding about this, but: one of the most impressive women I know (and I can't be any more specific than that, though I will say she has won the highest honor in her profession) is still so angry about the sexism in the coverage of Hillary that she is not going to vote for Obama. She seems genuinely not to like him, and the fact is that she knows a hell of a lot about Chicago politics. I don't think she'll bring herself to vote for McCain (she's not crazy), but my guess is that she'll stay at home (or more accurately, at the office.)
I've had several conversations with her about this (and indeed, she will owe me $5 Wednesday ) and I cannot persuade her to pull the lever for Barack.
I did, happily, a week ago, with my wife and father in law. My brother in law voted Thursday, the last day for Illinois early voting, in Evanston. Took two hours of waiting for him, about forty minutes for us.
Early voting goes on till Monday evening in Indiana.
Tuesday is going to be bananas. I cannot imagine the crush had there not been early voting...

When I was young and foolish, I bought the Carville/Matalin memoir of the '92 election. The one useful thing I learned was that, inside the bubble of the campaign, when everyone you speak to is either a fellow traveller or seen as an enemy, it's easy to convince yourself that up is down. She very sincerely believed the polls were wrong and Bush pere would pull it out.

I can't remember which columnist it was, Dionne maybe, who pointed out that Gary Bauer also named Jesus as his "favorite philosopher", but was able to explain why and discuss (his view of) Xianity as a philosophy.
