Gravatarres ipsa loquitur has ruined Easter Monday.

GravatarI've said it a few times here, but one thing you have to remember about Ware is that he has been in Iraq more or less constantly since the invasion.

When he's come to the US, it's been for a week or two at most at a time; the largest period of time away from Iraq included a trip to France for the rugby World Cup, and even then CNN got him to do reporting among the Aussie supporters.

Given that perspective, I don't think it's unreasonable for him to take that position. But it's a perspective that's shielded from American domestic politics, and it's nowhere near as bad as the position of American hawks equally shielded from the facts on the ground in Iraq.

GravatarA reminder that when Colin Powell spoke about the Pottery Barn rule, he couldn't even get his facts right. There is no break it/buy it rule at Pottery Barn.

GravatarIraq:USA::Afghanistan:USSR

GravatarFrom below:

Hey, did you ever see "Jeanne Eagels"? Watched it last night and was astounded.

Phila, I have not seen it. Kim Novak can get the job done, though. Jeff Chandler, OTOH, is a human sleeping pill.

I've spent the last couple weekends watching the movies Will Rogers made with Ford: Doctor Bill, Judge Priest, and Steamboat Round the Bend. Amazing stuff. Rogers is out of this world. STEAMBOAT, in particular, is as poetic a film as any of the Big Five Frogs ever directed.

GravatarA reminder that when Colin Powell spoke about the Pottery Barn rule, he couldn't even get his facts right.

Powell's source for information about Pottery Barn was Curveball.

GravatarAt least Ware is honest about what's really happening in Iraq. He has his own opinion about what the right response is, but he's giving people information they can use to draw their own conclusions.

2. Apologize for 1.

3. Commit to financing the reconstruction, which would be a fraction of the cost of continuing the occupation.

4. Rollback the Bremer economic rape of the state industries and cancel the existing contracts with non-Iraq companies.

5. Get the eff out.

GravatarWare just knows there's some way to turn Iraq into a westernized, secular democracy. He doesn't know what it is, but he knows there's a way and we have to stay there till we find it.

He's kinda like a more butch Chris Shays than a McCain supporter. I doubt he'd be on board for bomb bomb Iran.

Agreed. And it will be a mess when we leave. But our staying won't prevent that. So let's get the fuck out.

GravatarDeadthreaded, but interesting:

McCain breaks spending rules

Gravatar...adding, there are times when I've rooted for Obama because I want this thing to be over. Clinton can stay in the campaign as long as she likes, but I do wish she'd have focused her fire on McCain, instead of arguing that he's so awesome that Obama couldn't beat him.

Word.

And what is the endpoint here? Given the remaining state primaries, Obama will have a larger popular vote and more regular delegates. The supers can go against the will of the people and destroy the party. Hopefully most of them will decide to go with the popular vote well before the convention, and Senator Clinton will have the dignity to drop out and back the party. Her strategy of putting her remaining hopes on the superdelegates is divisive to party unity. Why would any good Democrat want to go against the will of the people? PA is about it for her and just isn't big enough to make the difference.

GravatarI couldn't watch past the courtroom scene with Step'n Fetchit.

Stepin Fetchit is a comic genius.

Remember: Ford was even more fond of white fools, i.e., Andy Devine, Victor McLaughlin, and his own brother, Frank (typically playing a semi-mute backwoods alcoholic).

Obama Iowa Senior Adviser Invokes 'Monica's Blue Dress' When Assailing Bill Clinton's 'Patriotism' Comments

"When Joe McCarthy questioned others' patriotism, McCarthy (1) actually believed, at least aparently (sic), the questions were genuine, and (2) he did so in order to build up, not tear down, his own party, the GOP. Bill Clinton cannot possibly seriously believe Obama is not a patriot, and cannot possibly be said to be helping -- instead he is hurting -- his own party. B. Clinton should never be forgiven. Just wondering...

GravatarI suspect that whichever Democrat is elected in November, there's going to be a lot of grousing and recrimination here that he/she isn't getting us out of Iraq fast enough.

Obama has said we need to be as careful getting out as we were reckless in getting in. Clinton has placed similar caveats on her plans.

It's not going to be quick or pretty and our political enemies are waiting to pounce on everything that goes wrong on our way out, pretending that everything had been going wonderfully up til now and all that was really necessary was a little more will and fortitude (and yes, a tad more blood and money).

It's tragedy.

GravatarIf Obama's words are any indication, then we could be there a while:

Let me be clear: ending this war is not going to be easy. There will be dangers involved. We will have to make tactical adjustments, listening to our commanders on the ground, to ensure that our interests in a stable Iraq are met, and to make sure that our troops are secure.

"Interests."
What interests? Oil? Permanent bases?
HRC has stated categorically that she will reject permanent bases and will remove ALL contractors.
The only interest we have is in getting out. He's supposed to tell the commanders what to do, not the other way around. And short of a massive military purge, is there any doubt what they would advise? Any danger of withdrawal is an absolute red herring. The Soviets left Afghan with little trouble. It's about saving face.

GravatarHopefully most of them will decide to go with the popular vote well before the convention,

Interesting. I checked IMDB to see who might have been lurking out in left field in that film and discovered in the cast:

Director: Frank Borzage(uncredited)

Borzage's last role! Doubtful he contributed any ideas ... but not impossible, and there's always the "inspiration factor."

I can't say I'm a huge fan of anything else that Sidney has done but I've not studied his musicals closely.
