Juan Cole looks at the ReThug field as to how bigoted they have been toward Muslims.
McCain has said some things which are real doozies.
They also reveled in their own ignorance -- never learning the difference between "Islamic" and "Muslim."
"Islamic" has to do with the religion founded by the prophet Mohammed. We speak of Islamic ethics or Islamic art, as things that derive from the religion. "Muslim," on the contrary, describes the believer. It would be perfectly all right to talk about Muslim terrorists, but calling them Islamic terrorists or Islamic fascists implies that the religion of Islam is somehow essentially connected to those extremist movements.

"The guy who killed his girlfriend and then wrapped her in plastic and stashed her in the attic?"
i had this case once...a guy got in a fight with his wife in their truck. he beat her over the head with a hammer, wrapped her in plastic, took her home, and put her under the bed.
his defense was that he didn't kill her on purpose with the hammer, but by accident by wrapping her in plastic as he didn't want blood all over the truck.

One of the oldest and soundest rules in intellectual life is “never get in a parsing contest with a skunk.” It is a principle that the lively, intelligent, combative cultural critic Lee Siegel forgot in autumn 2006, when he gave in to the temptation to respond to comments about him posted on his blog at The New Republic’s Web site. Some of the comments were anonymous and abusive — featuring allegations of chromosomal deficiencies and pedophilia — and Siegel replied under the pseudonym “sprezzatura,” praising his own work and denouncing his critics (“You couldn’t tie Siegel’s shoelaces”). When it emerged that Siegel was sprezzatura, he was pilloried in the blogosphere, suspended by The New Republic

it creates an environment in which everything is on display all the time, whether on YouTube, on Internet dating sites or in the blogosphere. This turns the culture into a giant popularity contest, an expanded and never-ending version of high school. “You must sound more like everyone else than anyone else is able to sound like everyone else,” Siegel writes. Thanks to the Internet, and to shows like “American Idol,” we are encouraged to believe in a phony idea of interactivity, as “all popular culture aspires to full viewer participation.”

So they've started running ads in the local races around here. Every single one of them carries on about cutting taxes, every single level of government. Federal, state, county. Except the one I want to hear from -- local. It's the local taxes that make our neighborhood's property taxes so freaking outrageous ($10k/yr), and the school district's the biggest part of that. Do the candidates for school board shout about cutting taxes? No . . . They did an end run & passed themselves a big honkin tax hike without a referendum a few years back. Bastards.
Oh, I'm glad we have good schools, believe me, but good God, are the students using solid gold desks? $10k/yr for an old house with 3 bedrooms and no central air? There are 24 houses and about 6 school-age kids on the block. Does it cost a quarter-million a year to educate 6 kids?

It seemed to me the other night that Clinton knows her stuff better, far better, than Obama does. But he has attracted real energy. They complement each other. Bob Herbert mentions what power the Democrats would have if the two of them teamed up and then had Bill, Edwards and the rest of the party barnstorming for them. It would be a site to behold. There are people who will never vote for a black man, others who will never vote for a woman but together, they bring in enough to win.

Upton Sinclair's book, "Oil", from which "There Will Be Blood" was taken is really good. I liked the film a lot. It was so symbolic of what is happening now (and forever) in the world of power, greed, and religion. In the end the rats gnaw themselves to death as there is no way to get everything they want even with all the money, etc. I guess that is addiction of some kind??

It is funny, I do not see the fiasco in Iraq as a failure of the American Military. They do what they do well and the Republicans do disservice to the military when they scaremonger people with this concept.

Carla Bruni, Wiki:
Born in Turin, Italy she grew up in France from the age of five and later attended boarding school in Switzerland. She eventually returned to Paris to study art and architecture, but left school at 19 to become a model full-time.
She is the step daughter of industrialist and classical composer Alberto Bruni Tedeschi and Italian concert pianist Marysa Borini. Actress Valeria Bruni Tedeschi is her sister. Maurizio Remmert, a businessman, has claimed to be her biological father.[1] She also had a brother named Virginio Bruni-Tedeschi (1959 - 4 July 2006), unmarried and without issue.

Via antiwar.com, something we kind of know, but the MCM news consuming public may not.
It’s common knowledge now that we “went to war on a lie” — the WMD scam — but what isn’t common knowledge is how the war is sustained on a daily basis by lies and partial truths and desperate, behind-the-scenes financial damage control. The war is all weapons systems and public relations, with the reality of wrecked countries and wrecked lives and a hemorrhaging of the national treasury suspended in media hoodoo and denial.
Consider the number 72,000. This number — of total U.S. battlefield casualties in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, through Jan. 5, 2008 — is simple enough, but as I ponder the fact that Paul Sullivan and his organization, Veterans for Common Sense, had to wrest it from the Department of Defense with a Freedom of Information Act request, and the fact that the only media outlet to pick up on it so far is the Scottish newspaper The Herald, I begin to grasp the extent of the deception in place sustaining the war on terror.
The reason that the casualty totals reported are far lower, Sullivan explained to me, is that the Defense Department releases the stats on only one category of battlefield casualty to the media, the number of GIs “wounded” in action, that is, harmed by the instrumentation of war: bullet, shrapnel or knife.
A GI who cracks his head on the windshield of his Humvee in a crash, though he may have suffered brain damage and had to be evacuated from the battlefield, is considered “injured,” not “wounded,” Sullivan explained, and thus doesn’t show up in the figure the DoD releases and the media misleadingly report. Likewise, a GI who suffers a heart attack, or, let’s say, one of those desert mystery illnesses, or a severe emotional collapse, is “ill,” not “wounded,” and is also MIA from the official casualty count. And in this way does the war remain a tad more statistically palatable to a distracted public.
