Atlantic City mayor drops out of sight http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071...s/
missing_mayor
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Under federal investigation for embellishing his Army service in Vietnam, a groggy-sounding Mayor Robert Levy called in sick at City Hall, climbed into his city-issued Dodge Durango and seemingly dropped off the face of the Earth.
A spokesman issued a 36-word statement saying the mayor was going on indefinite medical leave. That was a week and a half ago. Aides say he is in a hospital, but they won't say where, why or for how long.
The mystery and the gathering scandal over Levy's military record have worried civic leaders in this seaside casino resort, which has a long history of corruption, with four of the last eight mayors busted on graft charges and one-third of last year's nine-member City Council in prison or under house arrest.

One of the concepts being promoted around the time of Ronald Raygun, was agile and flexible manufacturing. The idea was if the economy was strong enough, and the country was making a changing spectrum of high tech complex goods, then if war came we could just shift the manufacturing direction instantly and overwhelm the opponent before the small stores of pre-made military goods could be consumed.

Pretty much what atablarasa said above.
Only, it did accelerate, as a matter of public policy as the state became more Republican.
It became really bad with the case of Kenneth Allen McDuff. Basically, he was released from prison, under an early release program to relieve overcrowding.
He immediately went out and killed more people.
Ann Richards was blamed, and from there, the blood thirsty nature of Texans, when it comes to prisoners took off. It's an over simplification of it all, but there you go.

Today I was in the land of the very wealthy. And I had to tell myself that they are not better than I am simple because they are very very rich.
The two I met were very nice, they had great values and politics. Not all rich people are evil. Not all evil people are rich, but the rich who are evil can often amplify that evilness to many, and buy their way into reasonableness using the law, pr firms and think tanks.
Think about the people who have "normalized" torture. Can you imagine a more horrible group of people?
They aren't doing the torture, they are just making it POSSIBLE and clearing the way ideologically for more torture to exist. Why?
For Talk radio it's to entertain.
What are the reasons for others? To keep their think tank job?

I'm still working on extending the outside space for my house. I've put in a small barbecue patio on the side, and am still trying to plan out what to do with this acreage behind the house. The gardening in front is growing well, and does not need much besides minor work.
What I'm thinking of but still do not have planned out, in any detail, is how to finish about half an acre, to be able to better use the space as living space instead of a refuge for snakes and rabbits. What I'm picturing is a screened in large back porch maybe 20 feet deep the width of the house, with behind that space a semi-covered space. Covered with both climbing plants, and some roof.
It's nice outside here about 9 months of the year. During the summer of course you stay inside during the day, if you are at home, and only go outside after the sun has set.

Researchers have discovered thousands of marine microbes:
Using new DNA sequencing techniques, the researchers have identified as many as 37,000 different kinds of bacteria huddled near two hydrothermal vents on an underwater volcano off the Oregon coast.
"Many of these bacteria had never been reported before," said Julie Huber of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, whose study appears in the journal Science.

hydrothermal vents just blow my mind. God, I wish I'd had the chops to cut it in marine bio or cellular biology.

good question
reminds me of the 80's. the serious brainwashing started then with the moral majority, and the righties started calling poor moms, "victims." Remember that? Rush Bimbo sarcastically saying, "Oh, those poor welfare queen victims, blah blah." So fucking ironic that these same people claim victimhood.

Err, 4LG, it only has 2 stars on IMDB, that should have been a clue.
This movie is about an evil hypnotist who has a worse act than that of the Great Vorelli from "The Devil Doll". The hypnotist known as Dr Carlo Lombardi puts a woman under hypnosis asks her questions and she answers...great show, eh? Amazingly he makes a living doing this. He can also use the woman to call forth a creature from the ocean to kill. He doesn't really have a reason for doing this other than a hobby. Meanwhile another hypnotist who is also a researcher is staying at a house where an older couple and their daughter live. The couple is rich and the daughter really likes this guy, but he apparently hates these people, which begs the question "why is he staying with them in the first place?" There are also some cops looking into the deaths of people killed by the creature and the rich old guy makes a deal with Lombardi to bring his act of asking questions on the road. The hero of the story Lance Fuller who is the guy who really shouldn't be staying with the rich people falls in love with the woman who is hypnotized. There is a dog and also an unfunny butler and maid...all in all a rather talky movie with a lame monster that appears here and there.

She's curled up in the farthest back corner of my closet, last I saw.
She had a rough day, partly my fault I guess. She has been pretty tough to get pills into, so I dissolved her antibiotic in some water, and put that in a small syringe to squirt into her mouth, just like her food.
Well, she didn't like that at all, and puked it all back up in just minutes.
I took a taste of some residue in the syringe, and it really had no taste to me at all, I don't know why she fought it so much.
To be honest, I'm not having happy thought about how this is gonna turn out.

Don't know for sure. She's a rescue kitty from the pound, got her in Feb 2002.

Who thought it was a good idea for the Ferrelly Brothers to remake an Elaine May movie? Talk about a pastrami sandwich on white bread with mayo.

I don't know why I whore these local things, but here it is anyway:
Halifax's two international shipping terminals were built in the 1960s, and they've had their ups and downs through the years.
The port profited handsomely from the United States' trade embargo of Cuba, as millions of tonnes of Cuban-bound Canadian wheat shipped through our lucky city. But with disintegration of the Soviet Union that business collapsed completely, leaving behind only wishful thinking and the abandoned silos that still loom, both physically and psychologically, over the South End.
(Since they caught fire a few years ago, there's been talking of tearing down the silos but Soviet-inspired architecture has a real role to play, if you ask me: the silos and the hulking Fenton Tower make everything else in town look that much better in comparison.)
Regardless, the Cuba trade was about half the port's business, and here we are 40 years later and the terminals are still only at half capacity.
So how do our thoughtful and wise political leaders deal with shipping terminals at 50 percent capacity? That's right: they build more of them.

And now I feel bad for maligning the woman unfairly...
To be fair, it's pretty improbable. And as I noted, she makes a lot of her own problems. But she's not killfile material or anything like that.

Don't.
While sometimes I have good interactions with her, she can be very, very odd and antagonisitic.

No, apparently we're not going to do TV, but I'm doing two radio bits on Tuesday, one a.m. talk show and one p.m. news. At least, that's what I think I'm doing. My secretary is handling it all, hee.

I forgive you.
Sort of understandable. But I believe she was posting much earlier here under other names, such as mishimishi (same as the e-mail nam she posted for Incog.) I stumbled across that name while digging for Merkin quotes.

Well, she's definitely spent some time there. She claims to have attended McGill, too, IIRC.

Speaking of internet scans and the suckers that buy into them, here's Orange Satan on the incredibly ludicrous campaign to pay that idiotic "Cheers and Jeers" guy:
I'm in for a one-time $500 contribution, plus a $20 monthly recurring.
They're goal is $50k and they're well over halfway there.
I realize nobody's asked my opinion, but the short version is that mimi bitch can go fuck herself.

Ruth: alas, there's no shortage of examples of American complicity with torture. Think of the contras, the death squads, the embrace of Pinochet and Gaultieri in another era. If you haven't read Jacobo Timerman's 'Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number,' it's a harrowing book, and deals with torture's effect on the torturer and his enablers. It's sadly, and horribly, on point.
