Molly: the only coherent take on Plain I've come up with is that she's a dogwhistle to the fundies and wingnut base that McCain holds so tenuously. I need to remember that tenuousness, because i find it so counterintuitive that such a conservative man isn't embraced by conservatives. But there it is.
And that she's female was thought a great idea by the same folks who noticed that Hillary Clinton is a woman, that Clarence Thomas, among others of his ilk, is black, and so on. The thought was doubtless that she'd throw a curve at the narrative that women gravitate to the Democrats. The notion that any woman would support the Republicans, whose stance on women's health issues has been reactionary, ignorant and dangerous, even if they run a woman candidate, still escapes me...

NYT has a piece this morning explaining the extent of the Obama-Ayers connection, which will be the basis for a desperate smear campaign as McCain sees the race slip away.
It quotes McCain on Obama in 2007:
In a televised interview last spring, Senator John McCain, Mr. Obama’s Republican rival, asked, “How can you countenance someone who was engaged in bombings that could have or did kill innocent people?”
It does not quote McCain on McCain in 1997:
"I am a war criminal," McCain said on "60 Minutes" in 1997. "I bombed innocent women and children."

We’ve lived through nearly two terms of an administration that believed it could create its own reality:
“Deficits don’t matter.” “Brownie, you’re doing a heckuva job.” “Those weapons of mass destruction must be somewhere.”
Now comes Ms. Palin, a smiling, bubbly vice-presidential candidate who travels in an alternate language universe. For Ms. Palin, such things as context, syntax and the proximity of answers to questions have no meaning.
In her closing remarks at the vice-presidential debate Thursday night, Ms. Palin referred earnestly, if loosely, to a quote from Ronald Reagan. He had warned that if Americans weren’t vigilant in protecting their freedom, they would find themselves spending their “sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was like in America when men were free.”
What Ms. Palin didn’t say was that the menace to freedom that Reagan was talking about was Medicare. As the historian Robert Dallek has pointed out, Reagan “saw Medicare as the advance wave of socialism, which would ‘invade every area of freedom in this country.’ ”

When a dealership orders cars from the factory no money changes hands. In general, the finance arm of the manufacturer floats the money for 90 days. If the car is not sold in 90 days, interest accumulates. When the car is sold a sight draft for the cost of the car and any interest is forwarded to the manufacturer. Dealers have 3 working days to do this. If you are behind on the 3 day rule you are considered "out of trust" and you can lose your franchise. Don't ask me how I know this.

For the 2007 tax year, Todd Palin's self-employment brought him $66,893 in gross receipts — $49,893 from fishing and $17,000 from snowmachine racing. But, the returns show, he claimed so many deductions that he reported only $15,513 net profit from the fishing operation and claimed a $9,639 loss from his racing, leaving him with an overall net income of only $5,874

I had a weird take on the OJ thing. I think he was guilty, but it never should have gone to trial.
The evidence should have been tossed. When they went over the wall without a warrant because they "thought OJ might be in danger", it should have been laughed out of court. Furman had a very good reason to think OJ did it. It was a crime of passion, which in over 80% of cases indicates a spurned man, and he had been called to a domestic dispute in the past with OJ and Nicole so he knew that OJ was a domestic batterer.
That means that they needed a warrant. OJ was a suspect, not that bullshit they concocted about them being concerned he was a victim too. It was a bad search. They knew he was the guy. They lied. They didn't want to wait for a warrant because they were afraid he would dump evidence.

important analysis from your most trusted name in news:
(CNN) -- An analysis carried out by a language monitoring service said Friday that Gov. Sarah Palin spoke at a more than ninth-grade level and Sen. Joseph Biden spoke at a nearly eighth-grade level in Thursday night's debate between the vice presidential candidates.
The analysis by the Austin, Texas-based Global Language Monitor said Palin, governor of Alaska and the GOP vice presidential nominee, used the passive voice in 8 percent of her sentences, far more than the 5 percent used by the Democratic senator from Delaware.
The analysis noted that the "passive voice can be used to deflect responsibility; Biden used active voice when referring to [Vice President Dick] Cheney and [President] Bush; Palin countered with passive deflections."
"It obscures the doer of the action," said Language Monitor President Paul Payack, an independent with no political affiliation.
The two candidates were nearly even in total number of words spoken. The normally voluble Biden restrained his tendency to ramble by uttering just 5,492 words during the 90-minute debate, versus 5,235 for Palin, Payack said.

I think the OJ trial was winnable for the prosecution, despite all the mistakes and misconduct by the police. I think that such mistakes and misconduct are extremely common, but most people accused of a crime don't have enough money to spend on defense lawyers to exploit those weaknesses.
Even then, the prosecution had a decent collection of evidence, but they screwed up the presentation and didn't stop Fuhrman from lying, and didn't call Johnny Cochran on the fact that wet leather shrinks. I think OJ got away with murder, but in a weird way, he's finally getting punished.

Sen. John McCain and his Republican allies are readying a newly aggressive assault on Sen. Barack Obama's character, believing that to win in November they must shift the conversation back to questions about the Democrat's judgment, honesty and personal associations, several top Republicans said.
With just a month to go until Election Day, McCain's team has decided that its emphasis on the senator's biography as a war hero, experienced lawmaker and straight-talking maverick is insufficient to close a growing gap with Obama. The Arizonan's campaign is also eager to move the conversation away from the economy, an issue that strongly favors Obama and has helped him to a lead in many recent polls.
"We're going to get a little tougher," a senior Republican operative said, indicating that a fresh batch of television ads is coming. "We've got to question this guy's associations. Very soon. There's no question that we have to change the subject here," said the operative, who was not authorized to discuss strategy and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Being so aggressive has risks for McCain if it angers swing voters, who often say they are looking for candidates who offer a positive message about what they will do. That could be especially true this year, when frustration with Washington politics is acute and a desire for specifics on how to fix the economy and fight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is strong.

good morning.
36 degrees here, do you think it's time to shut the windows at night???
as for OJ--i managed to avoid the media circus, and it made my dad, who lives for tv, very mad. once, when i was out visiting cali & he had in on tv, i went outside. he loudly criticized me for not "caring about the trial of the century."
that is the one good thing about the 2000 election: my dad and i were able to bond 'cause he was visiting me & my new baby when hanging chads were all over the tv, and for once, i was a glued to the set as he was, and really appreciated his much greater knowledge of history in explaining to me who all the minor characters were.
whew! opening run-on. i guess i should run for vp. or run, oj, run.
p.s. was there some new oj trial?

And you've got the fix??? Fat chance - the reality is that most folks could get themselves up to speed if they had any desire - and I'm not going to hold their hand. I was just listening to Touch the World (an old tape rescued from my storage bin) - remember them; where is the money? You can rationalize all you want about why folks are out of the loop and not looking after their interests: they're overworked, the media, propoganda, lack of education, ....and on and on. Generational battle. Look at what conservatives did in the wake of Goldwater. Now it's our turn. Ain't gonna break consumerist habits, corporatism, apathy, greed, laziness, etc, in one swell foop.
Just remember, it took time to rid ourselves of slavery, invest women with suffrage, follow through on the promise of civil rights, etc. Persistence and the dawning of reality (e.g., end of "free" natural resources) will potentially overcome the obstacles of obstinance and cognitive dissonance. There's still time to deal with larger issues of global climate change and people all on their own are coming to the conclusion it's real and something must be done, so half the battle's won there.
Longer term it will be more difficult to demilitarize our society and whatnot, but we'll most likely deal with that over time because most likely we'll survive our current crisis. Crisis is a crucible for change. Look at what eventually came out of conflagrations like the Civil War, WWI, WWII...

I don't think it's not giving a shit, exactly. I think part of it is the extremely low expectations set by the current cretin-in-chief, and the general degradation of entertainment to the point that people are just hammered by these meaningless competition shows and the importance of celebrity and likeability. Why people think they want Someone Like Me (who has no relevant experience or insight into the complexities of governance in this age) is an absolute mystery to me, but these folks aren't like me in most respects.
Also, as trifect said, it's hard for a lot of people to expend the energy it takes to keep up with what's going on at a very deep level.

The US government is cutting its funding for the supply of contraceptives to family planning clinics run by Marie Stopes International in Africa, alleging that it condones forced abortions in China.
MSI has categorically denied that it supports forced abortions or coercive sterilisation in China or anywhere else in the world, and says that the actions of the Bush government will result in more abortions in Africa, as women will be unable to get contraceptives and will end up with unwanted pregnancies.
One of George Bush's first acts after becoming president was to stop all US funds to foreign organisations that helped women in any way to get an abortion, including providing advice. The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) lost $34m that Congress had appropriated for it in 2002.

Probably a rerun here, but worth a second look: Michael Berubé:
At dinner that night, after the debate about debates, I suggested to my Belmont hosts that it was part of a 30-year culture-war experiment: just as George W. Bush made us nostalgic for the wit and wisdom of Ronald Reagan, so too, in her time, would President Palin make us long for the sagacity and statecraft of George W. Bush.
But then a non-imaginary interlocutor said a most interesting thing. (It was a dinner for twelve people, and I didn’t catch his name, or I’d tell you.) He pointed out that the right-wing culture war against pointy-headed intellectuals does not extend to the judiciary. On the contrary, he said, it’s as if they’re willing to run a cephalopod and a bag of hammers for the executive branch (I don’t think these were his exact words), but they actually recruit and train all their intellectual firepower for the courts (those were pretty much his exact words). And, of course, he’s right: Scalia, Alito, Roberts—these are all graduates from Pointyheaded Liberal Elite Law School, Evil Genius Division, and the glaring exception, Clarence Thomas, was a Palinesque conservative-affirmative-action fuck-you payback for the rejection of Elitist Evil Genius Robert Bork.
And the right-wing noise machine got the memo, too: witness the fact that everyone on the right, even down to bottom-feeding shriekers like Michelle Malkin, duly took up their torches and pitchforks when Bush nominated Harriet Miers. I was wrong, I realize now, to have called Palin Harriet Miers 2.0. Because Harriet Miers was ridden out of town on a rail, in a matter of days, by many of the same people who are now digging in, doubling down, and rooting hard for Palin against the mocking liberal elites. When it comes to the highest court in the land, these right-wing hacks don’t put up with no second- and third-stringers.
Interesting point, no? I wish I’d made it myself.

That's kind of presumptive on your part. But then, I'm happy with what I do.
Given you've offered only "people are stupid", it's an easy assumption to make. Why don't you share what you do so we can talk about constructive solutions, then, if you don't like my presumption? Sadly, in my experience when people go for that retort, it generally means they're defensive about what they aren't doing...

Steve if you're still here, there are two versions; one from "Learning to Bend" and one from "If You're Gonna Lead My Country . . . " -- which one?

The 'preview' sounds the same, the time is the same... also check out "It's Not Impossible", too.

And how many times do you need to mention Nader, if not this particular time, huh? Or have you given up on Ralph too? just a nihilist defeatist at heart?
Tom - 大肚腩 |
I have not mentioned Nader for quite some time here. If you want me to I will, because I have a hell of lot more respect for him than either of the major party candidates and their running mates. I did mention last night how the were busy tripping over each other, foreign policy aside, to "saddle" up to Israel.

I don't think there are any "constructive" solutions. In reality, I think folks might come around when they have a hard time feeding their families. The light for me went on when I was in Egypt and watched people picking the "greens" for their dinners out of sewage ditches. I grew up in a town where all but a few manufacturing jobs are now gone - the folks that lost their jobs are still "wingers." I have no answers save for labor organizing and soup kitchens.

...and how do you organize labor when they have not had a job for a couple of years?

Good morning, all. The leaves are turning here in central OH. In spite of the leaf raking I do love autumn's vibrancy.

Reminds me of a Letterman joke. "I love autumn in LA - watching the birds change color and fall from the trees."

I'm in Carrboro. We are a little liberal oasis.
Ah,yes...the People's Republic of Carrboro...one of my favourite things about having lived in NC. It provided a fine counterpoint to the nearby town of Stepford, or, rather, Cary. Not that I lived in Cary, of course...I didn't have enough beige paint to qualify.
Since my wife was attending grad school at Duke, we lived in Durham, which is so blue that the Republicans didn't even run candidates at the state level in 2002, the last year I lived there. The Democratic primary is, in essence, the election. Not that this helps with the Senate, of course. (If you've never read it, I would recommend you pick up a copy of Paul Luebke's "Tar Heel Politics", which attempts to answer everyone's first question concerning NC: how the hell did Jesse Helms ever get elected even once, let alone for decades?)
Apparently, the Triangle region of NC has the highest per capita level of PhDs in the US. This doesn't necessarily translate into Democratic votes -- while working at RTP, I met a shocking number of right-wing, racist rednecks with graduate degrees -- but it helps. Outside of the Triangle, the Triad, Asheville, and Charlotte, however, the state is something out of "Deliverance"...

Absol-friggin-lutely. That's what their MO is all about. Notice the Gooper smirk when the words "Democrat Party" are spat out like a fur ball.
