If anything noteworthy were occurring in the Tim Russert Memorial World (which apparently there isn't) it might be this (from Juan Cole):
Massive Guerrilla attack in Afghanistan
Pushtun guerrillas mounting an insurgency against the Karzai government and against NATO troops in the Pushtun areas of Afghanistan staged a daring prison break on Friday. They set off bombs at a prison in Qandahar, killing 15 prison guards and allowing 1100 inmates to escape, including 400 captured guerrillas. Although the US refers to the guerrillas as 'Taliban' it is not clear that they are seminary students are actually linked to the Taliban movement of the 1990s. Many appear to be disgruntled Pushtun villagers.
The jailbreak spoke eloquently of the weakness and incompetence of the Karzai government, which many observers believe is in the process of collapsing under the weight of its own corruption.
The collapse seems to be accelerating even though the number of foreign troops in the country has grown enormously, to some 30,000 US and 30,000 NATO soldiers. Foreign donors recently pledged $20 bn in aid, though $10 bn of that came from the US and European donors seemed distinctly wary of having their money go into the pockets of the Afghan bureaucrats and those of their extended families.
In May, more US and allied troops were killed by guerrillas in Afghanistan than in Iraq.
Oh, yeah... and the complete failure of the Iraqi Parliament. And floods'n'shit.
I hope and pray that this media lunacy won't be lost on a significant percentage of the American viewing public.

Clayton Williams stirred controversy during his 1990 campaign for governor of Texas with a botched attempt at humor in which he compared rape to weather. Within earshot of a reporter, Williams said: “As long as it’s inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.”
It's not surprising that McStain -- given his contempt for women -- would find this statement to be "funny."

Shocking confession:
I actually thought it was darkly funny when Bobby Knight made the same joke to a dumbfounded Connie Chung.
She was pressing him for his feelings about recent losses and criticisms and he said something to the effect of: it's like being raped,if there's nothing you can do about it you might as well try to enjoy it.
This was 1987. The way I took it was the opposite of a misogynistic joke. Reporters often descend on the ruins of a home after a tornado and ask people how they feel about losing everything. Duh! That's when you give the reporter the Bobby Knight line. Not because you think rape is funny or that losing your home is equivalent to being raped. The point is that the reporter asked a ridiculously insensitive question in order to try to elicit an emotional response for the sick pleasure of the viewers.
Still I don't like this guy because he mocked Ann Richards who was a giant in my eyes.

"We are going to be bollixed up in a way that's terribly unfortunate," he said. "Our first obligation is the safety and security of this nation and the men and women who defend it. This decision will harm our ability to do that."

BILL MOYERS: Critics point to September eight, 2002 and to your show in particular, as the classic case of how the press and the government became inseparable.
Someone in the administration plants a dramatic story in the NEW YORK TIMES And then the Vice President comes on your show and points to the NEW YORK TIMES. It's a circular, self-confirming leak.
TIM RUSSERT: I don't know how Judith Miller and Michael Gordon reported that story, who their sources were. It was a front-page story of the NEW YORK TIMES. When Secretary Rice and Vice President Cheney and others came up that Sunday morning on all the Sunday shows, they did exactly that.
TIM RUSSERT: What my concern was, is that there were concerns expressed by other government officials. And to this day, I wish my phone had rung, or I had access to them.
From Moyers' program in April 2007.

TIM RUSSERT: I-- look, I'm a blue-collar guy from Buffalo. I know who my sources are. I work 'em very hard. It's the mid-level people that tell you the truth. Now-
BILL MOYERS: They're the ones who know the story?
TIM RUSSERT: Well, they're working on the problem. And they understand the detail much better than a lotta the so-called policy makers and-- and-- and political officials.
BILL MOYERS: But they don't get on the Sunday talk shows--
TIM RUSSERT: No. You-- I mean-- they don't want to be, trust me. I mean, they can lose their jobs, and they know it. But they're-- they can provide information which can help in me challenging or trying to draw out-- sometimes their bosses and other public officials.

If you're a journalist, and a very senior White House official calls you up on the phone, what do you do? Do you try to get the official to address issues of urgent concern so that you can then relate that information to the public?
Not if you're NBC Washington bureau chief Tim Russert.
When then-vice presidential chief of staff Scooter Libby called Russert on July 10, 2003, to complain that his name was being unfairly bandied about by MSNBC host Chris Matthews, Russert apparently asked him nothing.
And get this: According to Russert's testimony yesterday at Libby's trial, when any senior government official calls him, they are presumptively off the record.
That's not reporting, that's enabling.

Jeez...how helpful. Not:
Nine people sickened by a salmonella outbreak linked to fresh tomatoes ate at two restaurants from the same chain, federal officials confirmed Friday.
The chain's name and restaurant location are confidential, said David Acheson, the associate commissioner for foods at the Food and Drug Administration, during a conference call with reporters. A spokesman for the agency also declined to provide the time frame for the cases -- or say whether the restaurants were in the same state.

Apprentice to Darth Holden,
My condolences, think of good stories to tell, share as needed, repeat as needed. I'm thinking there has been a lot of this happening of late in our circle. If it isn't pets, it's parents or friends or even more sadly, young ones. Nothing stays forever and yet, we feel it anew every time. And here in the middle of all that we try to make sense of our collective direction. It is no wonder that some times we want to just lay down the talking stick and go work in a garden or go smell the ocean. We aren't meant to be doing the same thing every day. Peace.

I think I learned about this negotiation from a class I took.
Offer up the goods.
Make it attractive.
Give the customers a free "taste"
When they are hooked, hit them with the price.
Make sure that you offer a package deal so that they can't get Less because there is no place to negotiate from there.
GET the MONEY UP FRONT. Because after wards they might say, "350 bucks? For that? That wasn't that great. I'll give you 100 bucks and you are lucky to get that."
Oh, and what did we call this negotiation technique? Guess.

Odd the McCain campaign claims they didn't know about the remark. Obviously, they hadn't read Scott McClellan's book, "What Happened", because he talks about that campaign (which he worked on) very early on!
Of course, it didn't stop them from using talking points on McClellan.
