DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee, 5
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell'st thou then;
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.

Yes, you are being a dick -- by defining necessity in such spartan terms. I mean, if you won't to define necessity to what is essential to sustain life, then the fucking libraries you laud should be closed. You can't eat a book. "I'd like to see libraries improve lives by helping out with food and medicine rather than reading matter."
No, I'm not being a dick. I've observed that there are things that can help people without their need to own something. They can then use such money to invest in healthcare, housing, food, etc.
We as a society can collectively assist people to have better quality of life rather than having individuals buy into a consumerist society. And yet, I'm not saying that people shouldn't want to have nice things or enjoy life: I simply noted that TVs are not necessary to live and I'm more interested in other measures of quality of life.
That would include: do people have enough money to eat healthfully so they aren't going to McDonald's all the time, becoming obese and having the associated health issues that negatively impact quality of life?
I was talking about this rather reasonably and I'm getting called a dick. Weird.
NTodd, Trashy | Homepage | 07.01.07 - 12:13 am | #

Michael Moore's controversial film SiCKO opened nationwide this weekend. But before the inevitable discussions about the accuracy of the film's portrayal of the U.S. health care system, you can make up your own mind. The summary below includes comparisons of the American health care system relative to other countries and between the states, data on the uninsured, rising health care costs, the woes of Medicare and Medicaid and more.
There are all sorts of AA meetings. Some are neraly cultlike; some are just a bunch of folk getting together to help each other stay sober. Hang in there; it's a big change he's trying to make, and it isn't always pretty.

Thank you. You can quickly judge a town or city by the vibrancy and attendance of its library. My town, Augusta, Maine has a very vibrant, well-attended library. It is small, but well-used. Lots of kids. Lots of special activities (brass bands playing in the evening !!!). Every time I return a book late and have to pay a fine, I tell the librarian I'm making a donation. And it is true.

Anyone who actually thinks books are not essential also thinks that the solution to a lack of food is to starve off most of the population.
"won't to" ???
You missed my "want to" apology downstairs.
And I also think you are sarcasm impaired if you think I don't like books and want to starve off most of the population. I was just pointing out that NTodd had defined essential to life (and it seems humanity "lived" for a long time without books) to take all the joy out of it. Now he says that was not what he meant and I believe him. I think he is being dognatic, however, and not paying enough attention to the psychological aspects of poverty, where a cheap, simple pleasure can make a hell of a lot of difference. With the slump the toon industry has been in for the last several years, I've had first hand experience.

How v. sad that there's a big garage but no bedroom, no ritual room, no guest room.
I've simplified things since I moved from an extremely large house and property to a much smaller house, only 1,200 sq feet, on 1 acre.
I cull books about three times a year, and I still have a couple boxes to trade with one of the local used book stores, for credit.

Sarah, deepest sympathy for you. No, don't tell me you don't want it, that it's the child who's doing the dying and you can only stand around and watch. She has the easy part of it. You on the other hand have to go on living while she goes on ahead without you.
And we, one step further removed, can only stand here with you, and hold you while you have to let her go. Know that we love you both and will be here for you when you get back from sending her on her journey.

I don't know, NTodd. Isn't it inaccurate for a policy debate if you don't present all the facts to get at the best solution? As a piece of entertainment, I have no problem with a biased point of view. But as a tool to help move dialogue to a good outcome, I think it is intellectually dishonest. I mean, yes it was powerful when he took those rescue workers to Cuba. But shouldn't we know all the prep work done ahead with Castro's government? Did we see real Cuban medicine or a Castro propaganda machine? I don't know.

The garage was an add-on. I'm fascinated with small personal space arrangements like this. Think of it in conjuction with communal buildings and spaces.

With the addition of the garage it certainly becomes a statement about the culture's mobility obsession.

Cuban medicine is quite good; some of their public health statistics, such as maternal and fetal health, compare favorably to ours. It's exported to the third world sometimes, indeed for propaganda as well as for doing good works. The United States would never so behave, of course, having only the most altruistic of motives.

Did we see real Cuban medicine or a Castro propaganda machine? I don't know.
This depends. Basic care in Cuba is pretty good compared with what the many uninsured people in the US can access.
Very tricky things? In the US you'd have excellent care if you had corresponding insurance coverage, or prepared to pay a lot out of pocket.
Notice that Castro had to consult Spanish docs for something that if not easily be taken care of, could be, in most of the US.
Much of the limitations of Cuban medical care is due to the long term embargo by the US for most kinds of medical resources.
There has got to be a mid-way point for people to have access to adequate medical care on all levels.
Maybe Canada is a better example to draw from.

Do not expect to hear anyone speak well of the care they received in the U.S. On the other hand, patients and doctors from Canada, Britain, France and Cuba marvel at their health care.
Moore tells viewers there are about 50 million people in the U.S. without health insurance.
Just this past week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated there are about 43.6 million uninsured people in the country. In March, the Census Bureau put the number at 44.8 million.
Moore noted that about 18,000 people die each year as a result of the lack of health insurance. That number comes for a January 2004 report from the Institute of Medicine. The report said the uninsured do not get the care they need and are more likely to die prematurely.
Taking on the pharmaceutical industry, Moore says it spent millions of dollars lobbying Congress for a Medicare prescription drug benefit.
"Of course it was really a bill to hand over $800 billion of our tax dollars to the drug and health insurance industry," he said.
Moore is citing the projected cost for the Medicare drug benefit's first 10 years.
Last year, however, Medicare officials told The Associated Press that the projected cost of the benefit through 2015 stood at about $729 billion, a substantial drop compared with original estimates.
Moore is an advocate. He's arguing a position. He can be argued with; and he provokes discussion. Calling his work 'propaganda' seems to me needlessly pejorative.

The thing I like best about these bought-and-paid-for "criticisms" of Moore's latest is how it is so glaringly obvious the brownshirts have absolutely nothing to hit back with.
The "poor healthcare/insurance industry is being dragged through the mud" bullshit is esp. amusing. Not only do the patients hate the healthcare/insurance industry, but so do the fucking doctors.
Know what hurts the debate? When people debate a messenger who is countering bullshit from the corporate interests who are happy with the status quo.

Crikey, there are numerous 'rational' voices out there advocating for health care change, and have been for quite some time. What's needed now is the mobilization of political power to the point where our Congress finally understands what poll after poll show, to wit, that a majority of the country's citizens would welcome universal health insurance. Moore is more likely to contribute to that than one more PhD in public health writing one more thesis, or giving three hours' more expert testimony.

Oh, and can we stop using the term "Big Pharma" as the fallback paymaster of these anti-SiCKO trolls?
Big Pharma is going to go on making out just like they have all along and probably better in the long run, and they know it.
Who's paying "fscott" and the various other names is Big INSURANCE. Because no insurance company ever in all of history every cured anyone of illness, performed surgery, developed a drug that eased pain or did anything else to in any way heal the sick.
All they did was take your money and keep as much of it for themselves as they possibly could. That's all. They didn't give it to a doctor, a pharmacist, a nurse, an EMT, a biochemical researcher, or any other sort of healer if they could by any means prevent it.
That giant sucking sound you hear is the tightening sphincters of all insurance executives everywhere at the prospect of being rendered redundant.

Then even if you have decent health coverage, and end up in a county hospital due to it being the closest place, the care there is not always the best. I got a bad burn when a furnace I was trying to light in Big Sur exploded and gave me 3rd degree burns on my hand. I think I got a Dr. Mengel there, who wanted right at that moment to debrid the whole burnt area (shallow 3rd degree burn with very live nerves below) with no pain pills.
I told that monster to stop, and that I'd take my Blue Cross and Kaiser Cards to a real ER room, who knew what they were doing. Had my wife drive me up to The SF Bay area that night, and drank a bottle of whiskey on the way to kill the pain.

Echidne of the snakes
Yeah, but this I can live with quite comfortably, because doctors actually heal the sick. Or at least try. So if money is going to be going out of all our pockets for "health care" I find it entirely reasonable that large proportions of same wind up in the pockets of doctors. It is an incredibly demanding profession, both in terms of education and then in execution. I could no more do it than I could sprout wings and fly; for those who can I can say sure, pay them like crazy.
What I worry about more, in terms of how we're going to do the transition from What We Have Now to How It's Eventually Going To Be, is the new jobs we're going to have to find for the people who currently work in doctor's offices doing nothing but badgering either insurance companies or patients for payments not yet received. Doctors are screwed badly by the present system too but at the same time it provides work for people with brains but lacking college degrees. I worry about those folks.

Bloomberg - Standard & Poor's, Moody's Investors Service and Fitch Ratings are masking burgeoning losses in the market for subprime mortgage bonds by failing to cut the credit ratings on about $200 billion of securities backed by home loans.
The highest default rates on home loans in a decade have reduced prices of some bonds backed by mortgages to people with poor or limited credit by more than 50 cents on the dollar and forced New York-based Bear Stearns Cos. to offer $3.2 billion to bail out a money-losing hedge fund. Almost 65 percent of the bonds in indexes that track subprime mortgage debt don't meet the ratings criteria in place when they were sold, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
That may just be the beginning. Downgrades by S&P, Moody's and Fitch would force hundreds of investors to sell holdings, roiling the $800 billion market for securities backed by subprime mortgages and $1 trillion of collateralized debt obligations, the fastest growing part of the financial markets.
``You'll see massive losses from banks, insurance companies and pension managers,'' said Joshua Rosner, a managing director at investment research firm Graham Fisher & Co. in New York and co-author of a study last month that said S&P, Moody's and Fitch understate the risks of subprime mortgage bonds. ``The longer they wait, the worse it's going to be.''

Quite. But so is nursing, and it is nowhere near as well paid. It's paid lower than many quite routine occupations. And certainly physicians deserve a good income. It's the absolute level of that which is much higher here, even after taking into account the higher costs of tuition.
But I had in mind also groups such as those who have invested in biochemical companies or medical companies. In the 1990s they made an extremely high income out of that.

I'm looking at the webpage of the med school at the University of Manitoba in Canada.

Echidne, there is no argument between us, really (I wouldn't dare! Not only do I adore you but you are way smarter, and I am almost certain more sober at the moment, than I am.)
I am just grabbing quotes from various people to emphasize the point that it is the "medical insurance" industry that is the villain of our current situation, the bloodsucking vampire that needs the steak--oops, sorry Doug, I meant "stake"--through the heart and vanish into nonexistence. Because they do not "provide care" for anybody; they exist only to deny care, or effectively so by refusing to pay for it.

How nurses are paid and treated is truly criminal. Nurses do the physical work and planning and patient education, and don't get paid jack.
And Schwarzenegger wants to increase the patient to nurse ratio. In the meantime, we have a desperate shortage of nurses in CA, but no willingness on the part of the legislature to fund new schools.

No argument, Xan. I just wanted to point out that the picture is more complicated than we often say in our righteous wrath. Another group that benefits from the current system is the manufacturers of advanced technology. Some of that improves the quality of care immensely, but some of it doesn't do very much, or we don't know if it does, yet the profits in that field are high in both cases.

I can't really think of anyone I've ever known who's like a major "Joe Walsh Fan"...
The James Gang were fairly popular "back in the day," as the kids say. "Funk 49" was an FM staple.
The album with "Life's Been Good" on it was also a decent hit at the time.
Personally, I was kind of jazzed when he joined up with the Eagles. Saw the Eagles on the tour pre-Joe and the first one post-Joe, and post-Joe Eagles were much, much superior.

TPM, my apologies, I was using "doctors" as shorthand for any hands-on medical provider. Most emphatically including nurses and physicians assistants and the like; not only is my sister in law anurse (LPN, contract in-home private duty at the moment) but PAs have been my only 'health care providers' for the last 12 years since I last had insurance and have been paying out of pocket in clinics and such.

ProfWombat, what burns my ass over those meds is that basic research is done in universities. Certainly, money doesn't make it down to researchers.
With regards to anything new that might be generated from such research, the university typically owns the patent rights, not the researchers themselves.

sallyh: then, you want to start a practice, perhaps, but before you buy paper clips you have to buy an insurance policy costing tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of dollars, that protects you to less than half the amount of some cases decided in your specialty, and find further coverage isn't available. Which is why you look for a job in a group. And like that...

There seemed to be a break at about age thirty between the "brow-wipers" and the scientists. I was incredibly impressed by the young nurses, male and female, AND the nurses from Eastern Europe. Also one of my photography profs photographed a group of them several years ago. He said the snakes are wide awake.

You know, most of the Mac types sniff that Microsoft stole everything for Vista from OS X.
Beyond that, Vista evidentally uses three times as much RAM as XP does while adding essentially nothing to the performance, and the next major version of windows is due out in only two years anyway.
Anyone who buys it for a PC that already runs a previous version of windows is tossing their money away.

"Europe honors HRW for exposing CIA jails
Published: June 29, 2007 at 3:27 PM
E-mail Story | Print Preview | License
NEW YORK, June 29 (UPI) -- A U.S. human rights group was honored this week by a European parliamentary body for its work in exposing CIA secret prisons.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg Wednesday gave an award to the New York-based Human Rights Watch for "helping to lift the veil of secrecy in the investigation into alleged secret detentions and illegal transfers of prisoners."
Windows Vista takes up significantly more memory (RAM) and executes typical applications slower than Windows XP, for the same hardware configuration[50][51]. With no processes running other than system processes, Windows Vista with Aero enabled consumes ~425 MB of physical memory, and with Aero disabled, only ~25 MB less[52]; compared to Windows XP, which consumes ~120 MB of memory.
Due to the resource use of Vista, many games including games using the Source engine (Half Life 2, Counter Strike: Source, etc.), and games using the Doom 3 Engine (Doom 3, Quake 4, etc.) show a significant drop in frame rate compared to that experienced in Windows XP[53]. This effect is mostly a problem if the computer running Vista has less than 2 GB of memory. However, hardware surveys show that very few gamers have 2 GB of RAM or more available on their hardware (less than 0.1% on Steam November 2006 hardware survey) [54].
Additionally, even with 2 GB of system memory, video games benchmarks with Vista show a framerate drop compared with XP[55], with some benchmarks showing a significant drop with similar configurations [56]. Of course, as some articles point out, these results are also the consequence of the current lack of maturity of Vista Graphics processing units drivers, and even maturity of Vista itself [57][58].

It was interesting. I was comparing it with my religious up bringing and one thing that I really appreciate is that my faith wasn't afraid of science and critical thought.
I think the other part that makes me so upset is the part when the Fundamentalists get behind the war and killing that comes with that. Would have been interesting to see what their take was on the war and the killing of others. Would they have used the fear card or the 9/11 card. They did talk about how the Muslims are raising their kids to kill so I guess we need to raise our kids to to to WHAT? Kill them? Die for Christ? Or Kill for Christ?
They didn't really talk about that as much as they talked about the tiny babies that they showed that were going to be killed.
And of course Ted Haggarty with teh gay! Wow.

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you." (Matthew 5:38-42, NIV)
"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you." (Luke 6:27-31. NIV)

You know what is interesting I have studied the "sayings of Our Lord" as well as the historical context in which they were written and there is some amazing stuff there. But as Thomas Jefferson said, You have to get the diamonds in the dunghill. The early church put words in Jesus' mouth.
And when the OT loving "Christians" bring out the anti-gay stuff they never go to the New Testament. Always OT or someone like Paul.

Considering their supposed love for Jesus, what the fundies really do seem to worship is the awful old testament version of God...
"You are my battle-ax and sword," says the LORD. "With you I will shatter nations and destroy many kingdoms. With you I will shatter armies, destroying the horse and rider, the chariot and charioteer. With you I will shatter men and women, old people and children, young men and maidens. With you I will shatter shepherds and flocks, farmers and oxen, captains and rulers. "As you watch, I will repay Babylon and the people of Babylonia for all the wrong they have done to my people in Jerusalem," says the LORD. "Look, O mighty mountain, destroyer of the earth! I am your enemy," says the LORD. "I will raise my fist against you, to roll you down from the heights. When I am finished, you will be nothing but a heap of rubble. You will be desolate forever. Even your stones will never again be used for building. You will be completely wiped out," says the LORD. (Jeremiah 51:20-26)

The truth is that the greatest enemies to the doctrines of Jesus are those calling themselves the expositors of them, who have perverted them for the structure of a system of fantasy absolutely incomprehensible, and without any foundation in his genuine words. And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But we may hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with all this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this the most venerated reformer of human errors.
As the "silent member" of the Congress, Jefferson, at 33, drafted the Declaration of Independence. In years following he labored to make its words a reality in Virginia. Most notably, he wrote a bill establishing religious freedom, enacted in 1786.

Among the sayings and discourses imputed to him by his biographers, I find many passages of fine imagination, correct morality, and of the most lovely benevolence; and others again of so much ignorance, so much absurdity, so much untruth, charlatanism, and imposture, as to pronounce it impossible that such contradictions should have proceeded from the same being. I separate therefore the gold from the dross; restore to him the former, and leave the latter to the stupidity of some, and the roguery of other of his disciples. Of this band of dupes and impostors, Paul was the great coryphaeus and first corrupter of the doctrines of Jesus.

The popular perception of the Bible as a divinely perfect book receives scant support from Ehrman, who sees in Holy Writ ample evidence of human fallibility and ecclesiastical politics. Though himself schooled in evangelical literalism, Ehrman has come to regard his earlier faith in the inerrant inspiration of the Bible as misguided, given that the original texts have disappeared and that the extant texts available do not agree with one another. Most of the textual discrepancies, Ehrman acknowledges, matter little, but some do profoundly affect religious doctrine. To assess how ignorant or theologically manipulative scribes may have changed the biblical text, modern scholars have developed procedures for comparing diverging texts. And in language accessible to nonspecialists, Ehrman explains these procedures and their results. He further explains why textual criticism has frequently sparked intense controversy, especially among scripture-alone Protestants. In discounting not only the authenticity of existing manuscripts but also the inspiration of the original writers, Ehrman will deeply divide his readers. Although he addresses a popular audience, he undercuts the very religious attitudes that have made the Bible a popular book. Still, this is a useful overview for biblical history collections.

It's becoming more and more ditchworthy as we speak. A few days ago, links to ads started popping up automatically if someone typed in certain names (Paris Hilton for example) and then you rolled your cursor over that text. At first, people were thinking that some nasty adware had been installed on their own browsers and that was source of the nuisance, but it was evidently a jeevan experiment into sticking ads on haloscan. Besides being supremely annoying, that shit was really slowing things down to a crawl. If anything was the last straw as far a haloscan goes, that should be it, if it gets adopted as a permanent feature.

The scenes where Hedison has the fly head are pretty weird, too.
Funny how less "graphic" that movie is than the remake, but much more memorable...
Wasn't a lot of the extra horror due to the fact that we were younger and a lot more willing to suspend disbelief? The last time that really happened for me was with the original Alien, although the banquet room scene in Pan's Labyrinth creeped me out momentarily at a truly primal level.

Ronin: this post reminds me of Ann's contemptuous dismissal of Congressional hearings into the adulteration of pet food by Chinese companies.
Yeah, Prof. Althouse was extremely misguided in her mockery of the media coverage and hearings related to the ongoing pet food scandal.
She mocked it at the very moment pet owners were scambling to figure out what foods in our supermarkets were still safe, and were dependant on the media to get that info. I recall her suggesting that the media was being ridiculous to cover the story of "just a few" cats and dogs getting sick and dying.
Every day since has brought more revelations that have, as you point out, extended to a long list of poisonous, unsafe products for humans.
It's too bad Althouse's coldness towards pet lovers and her desire to look down on them caused her to not understand the seriousness of that story. All she could see was pet owners who loved their animals "too much."
But she had every right to comment on how ridiculous she, personally, found Senator Byrd for getting emotional while talking about how much his dog means to an old timer like himself.
Now we're presented with a Senator who idiotically strapped his dog to the roof of his car for a 12 hour car trip and thought this made him sound good. Althouse is worried dog lovers will think badly of him.
Well, I have every right to take this as one more indicator that Mitt Romney is a jack-ass, since only a huge jack-ass would even consider strapping his dog to the roof of his car for 12 hours, let alone actually doing it.

Air strikes in the British-controlled Helmand province of Afghanistan may have killed civilians, coalition troops said yesterday as local people claimed that between 50 and 80 people, many of them women and children, had died.
In the latest of a series of attacks causing significant civilian casualties in recent weeks, more than 200 were killed by coalition troops in Afghanistan in June, far more than are believed to have been killed by Taliban militants.

That strategy, which presidential adviser Karl Rove alluded to in an April 2006 speech to the Republican National Lawyers Association, sought to scrutinize voter registration records, win passage of tougher ID laws and challenge the legitimacy of voters considered likely to vote Democratic.
McClatchy Newspapers has found that this election strategy was active on at least three fronts:
- Tax-exempt groups such as the American Center and the Lawyers Association were deployed in battleground states to press for restrictive ID laws and oversee balloting.
- The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division turned traditional voting rights enforcement upside down with legal policies that narrowed rather than protected the rights of minorities.
- The White House and the Justice Department encouraged selected U.S. attorneys to bring voter fraud prosecutions, despite studies showing that election fraud isn't a widespread problem.
Nowhere was the breadth of these actions more obvious than at the American Center for Voting Rights and its legislative fund.
Public records show that the two nonprofits were active in at least nine states. They hired high-priced lawyers to write court briefs, issued news releases declaring key cities "hot spots" for voter fraud and hired lobbyists in Missouri and Pennsylvania to win support for photo ID laws. In each of those states, the center released polls that it claimed found that minorities prefer tougher ID laws.
Oh great, another of Jim Steinman's overblown Wagnerian rock-operas. Now I'm going to have this stuck in my head all day.

Britain will not yield despite a sustained threat from people associated with al-Qaeda, Gordon Brown has said after three car bomb attacks in the UK.
The prime minister was speaking to the BBC after Saturday's attack on Glasgow Airport was linked to the two car bombs found in London's West End on Friday.
He said: "We will not allow anyone to undermine our British way of life."
Police are now holding four people over the attack on the airport and are searching houses near Glasgow.
Oh, boy...

Iraq's prime minister has condemned a US raid on Baghdad's Sadr City which left 26 people dead.
Nouri al-Maliki said the military operations were "conducted without prior approval from the Iraqi military command".
He has demanded an explanation from the US authorities and said anyone who breeches military orders will face an investigation.
Residents accused American troops of killing eight civilians in their homes and "firing wildly" during the raid in the mainly Shia district early on Saturday morning.
"We will not allow anyone to undermine our British way of life."
Except for smoking in pubs, which is right out.

smoking in pubs is not a British value
I am happy the smoking ban is in place, can go to pubs now and not come back smelling like an ash tray.

My son made this comment to me last week;
"Wasn't George Orwell British, and haven't the British people read him? Snort!"

We have a cafeteria at my workplace, and when it was renovated three years ago, a ventilation system was installed in the ceiling, on the idea that the smoke would get sucked up and out of the room. Smoking section in the back but no dividing wall. It never worked because 80% of the non-smokers complained about the draft, so they'd shut it off, and the whole place stinks every night of cigarettes and french fries.

Moon, I've lived in four jurisidictions here in North America as they've implemented smoking bans in bars. Here's what happens: for a year, people bitch and moan about it. In more rednecky locales, some yahoo thinks he is the first to think of it and puts up some legal resistance, but ultimately fails. Otherwise, smokers learn how to create little mini-alternative cultures on the sidewalk (even here in cold Canada). After a year, nobody says anything.
Oh, and that old canard about hurting business. Not true. Lots of non-smokers start going to bars or stay in them longer. And say what they will, the smokers keep going to bars too.

Indeed, the ban has worked fine in N Ireland, Scotland and Wales, England shouldn't be any different.

Exactly right, Moe.
I'm a smoker, and I've adjusted quite nicely to what now amounts to no smoking indoors anywhere but at home.
It's really not a big deal, and frankly, I think it was the right move.

Yup, I'm a smoker too and don't mind the ban at all. I will skip the extra drink at a restaurant however. But I can't see that it harmed NY at all. Frankly, I feel weird now in places where there isn't a smoking ban.

What has bothered me about public smoking is the universally accepted idea that one can throw a used butt on the sidewalk. A tissue or a gum wrapper will draw looks and criticism, and rightly so. But why are cigarette butts OK?

Moon, I haven't read the latest on the Scottish/London bomb plots. Have your police investigators definitely linked the incidents and are they also saying that al Qaeda is behind the plot?

If Al Qaeda was behind it, these attacks would have been more successful. There are dozens of bombs every day being built in Iraq that are more effective.

those 2 bomb plots stink of amateurish work - real terrorist, in my mind spend a lot of time planning and both 'bombs' didn't even sound like they would work other than catch fire...i dunno....stinks to me of the New Jersey 'terrisists' and the JFK 'terrorists'.
if 'al qaeda' teaches it's people anything, is that the 'bomb' has to work, otherwise what's the point?
