How the Saudis made fools of the White House
he Saudi move is a triumph for Mr Bush, who is under intense pressure at home to provide relief from soaring petrol prices ahead of the summer driving season.
However, Riyadh pointedly waited until Mr Bush had left the meeting before it made the announcement – leaving US officials in the embarrassing position of having already briefed reporters not to expect any movement from the Saudis.
Aw, but he's a wanker every day!

Brought this up from below regarding my confusion between Toyota profits and sales:
Though its overall performance last year would be considered a stellar achievement for any other automaker, Toyota's 28% profit plunge in the fourth quarter of 2007 points to an expected 27% drop in annual profits in 2008. If Toyota's revised forecast proves accurate, 2008 would break a nine-year stretch of profit growth. In addition to the slowing U.S. market, Toyota also cites high material prices, the worldwide credit crunch and a strong yen as contributing factors in its mild downturn.
and from another site:
"Earnings growth in Asia has become a key driver for our company," said Toyota senior managing director Takeshi Suzuki.
Sales in North America gained just 0.5 percent to 2.96 million vehicles, led by the new Camry and Prius cars. Other markets, including the Middle East, South Africa and Australia, saw an increase of 17.9 percent.

Yesterday I read in the local newspaper an article where a Bush spokesperson atated that Bush will use his presidency in any way to help the McCain campaign. That very same day a audio tape was released supposedly by Osama Bin Laden.
It is obvious that Bush will do what Bush does best. He will lie, distort the truth and use fear, fear, fear to help war mongering McCain get elected.
So if Bush is going to use his presidency to help McCains campaign then it is obvious that he will also use the military and pentagon to help McCain, by having them report how successful the war is going and report on the growing threat of Iran.
Wasn't it a week or so ago that weapons experts had a cache of over 40,000 weapons found in Iraq, thought to be used by the insurgents?
Not one of the weapons could be traced back to Iran. But of course the reichwing controlled media didn't cover this story because it goes against what the Bushites and McCain have been spewing about Iran for months and could hurt McCains chances of becoming the next war mongering president who could protect us from those scary brown skinned people.
But the real story is where did all of those weapons they found really come from? Could they have come from the black market via Israel via all of the aid we give them? Could they have come from China, Russia or Germany? We the people will never be told because according to the government we the people can't handle the truth.

This year’s severe drought is forecast to lower wheat and barely yields in Iraq by up to 35 percent, the Ministry of Planning said.
The ministry, in a statement, added that Iraq has been subjected to one of its worst droughts in recent history this year.
Wheat and barley yields may not exceed one million tons, the ministry added.
Iraq needs up to four million tons of wheat to meet domestic produce and at least two million tons of barley used mainly as animal feed.
Last year Iraq harvested more than 1.5 million tons of both crops and the rest it imported from abroad.
Iraq’s food import bill has been ballooning and is estimated at more than five billion dollars.
Worst hit area is the wheat and barley growing belt to the east of Mosul traditionally know as Iraq’s 'bread basket.’
But the area relies almost wholly on rainfall which has been very scarce this year.
The ministry forecast yields of wheat at 590,000 tons and barley at 483,000 tons this year.

The British government is deeply divided over its policy on cluster bombs on the eve of international negotiations about a ban, the Guardian has learned.
The split sets the Ministry of Defence, which wants to retain two types of cluster munitions in the British armoury, against Downing Street and the Foreign Office, which want to honour Gordon Brown's pledge last year "to work internationally for a ban" on those weapons that cause unacceptable harm to civilians.
An international conference on cluster munitions - shells or rockets which contain several smaller bombs - begins on Monday in Dublin. Officials said it was unlikely British divisions would be resolved by then. Instead, they hope the position taken by European allies could throw up a workable compromise.
Lord Malloch-Brown, the Foreign Office minister for Africa, Asia and the UN, told the Guardian: "There is an internal discussion going on in the UK as we try to maximize our offer for the [Dublin] negotiation." However, the former UN deputy secretary-general admitted being "uncomfortable" about a compromise that would leave some cluster bombs in the UK arsenal.

Labour rebels yesterday stepped up their campaign against government plans to allow terrorist suspects to be detained without charge for 42 days by tabling an amendment to a Commons bill to block the change.
As Downing Street pledged to press ahead with its counter-terrorism bill, the rebels said they hoped to defeat the government after signing up MPs who voted in favour of Tony Blair's unsuccessful bid to extend to 90 days the period terror suspects could be detained without charge.
David Winnick, one of the main rebels, said: "I believe there is a reasonable chance that the government will be defeated, but I do accept that the government will do everything in its power to try to persuade some of my colleagues to agree on the basis of various concessions."
The rebel amendment was tabled as Downing Street made clear that Gordon Brown was determined to press ahead with his plans.
The prime minister's spokesman said: "It is the prime minister's view and the home secretary's view that there can be no question of any compromise over 42 days. They are both strongly of the view that it is necessary to put in place legislation on a precautionary basis to enable terror suspects to be held for more than the current 28-day limit."
I agree with noblejoanie. Get the government out of the marriage business.

the boss of Tesco is apparently quite paranoid and believes that people are out to get him - The Guardian yesterday made a formal offer of amends to the supermarket chain Tesco over reports which had claimed that the company had set up an elaborate complex of offshore companies to avoid paying up to £1bn of corporation tax on a series of property deals. But the newspaper made it clear that it would strenuously defend a malicious falsehood claim by the company.
The libel admission, which follows a correction and an apology published in the edition of May 3, came in defence papers filed to the high court in response to an action started by Tesco last month.
Tesco is seeking special damages for libel and malicious falsehood against the paper and its editor, Alan Rusbridger.
In its defence, filed yesterday, the newspaper again admitted its errors, but denied that the allegations were, as Tesco claim, a "devastating attack on its integrity and ethics".
The defence says Tesco continues to avoid stamp duty land tax (SDLT) - a 4% mandatory levy on property deals, usually paid by the buyer but in common practice split between seller and purchaser.
The defence papers claim that Tesco's "ethical stance" in terms of tax avoidance "is in fact ... a sham".
beside this, Tesco's are trying to sue three Thai's, two businessmen and an activist who have voiced objection to them building stores in Thailand.
Tesco is one big bully

Well, they already are. You can't get hitched without a license from the State, no matter if the official performing the hitching is a judge, a j.p., or a member of the clergy.
Does it really matter if the State calls a civil union a "marriage"? As long as anyone who gets hitched has the same rights, no matter their gender, what does a word matter?
You need at a minimum civil unions to, e.g., guarantee benefits such as SS to your partner.

Legally, marriage is a contract. The State has interest in seeing that contracts are executed faithfully and correctly.
While much of the Congressional political focus has been on the declining fortunes and numbers of House Republicans, House Democrats have their own problem – they are winning too many elections.
By prevailing in conservative locales where they ordinarily would not have a chance, Democrats are widening the ideological divide in their own ranks and complicating their ability to find internal consensus.
It is a nice problem to have, but it is one that can bedevil party leaders.

A three-year-old boy undergoing a medical crisis caused by sickle cell disease is to be deported by the Home Office today in spite of protests from asylum rights campaigners about his fragile medical condition.
Cyril N'deh was born in Britain after his family fled from west Africa. His father Claude, a teacher, said he was tortured and imprisoned in Cameroon for protesting against the illegal executions of nine boys, but his application for asylum in Britain was rejected.
The family was arrested in Sheffield on Sunday and taken to Yarl's Wood detention centre in Bedfordshire.
The father, mother and three children have been told they will be put on a British Airways flight to Paris soon after dawn, from where they will be removed to Cameroon.
The Campaign Against the Deportation of Asylum Seekers said Cyril is running a high temperature and has lost weight since being removed from Sheffield.
Kath Swinney, a campaign coordinator, said: "He is now unable to support his body, flopping over and not standing unsupported. He is not talking at all or making any sounds.

extract: Were you to put all the kids from six average families in one house, you still wouldn't have as many as Derek and Deborah Simpson. With 13, aged from two to 21, Deborah has now been pregnant for 117 months - almost 10 years of her life. They spend between £600 and £700 at the supermarket every week, and pocket money alone works out at £240 a month. When the whole family goes on holiday together, they have to hire a bus, and if Deborah and Derek ever get a whole uninterrupted hour together in the evening, they laugh that it's the equivalent of most people's two-week summer holiday.
"A lot of women have come up to me and said, 'I've got two and I can't wait for them to be grown up and out my hair,'" Deborah marvels, wide-eyed. "I just think that's sad. I can't even imagine feeling that because I enjoy every single minute of them. We just love babies."
Deborah and Derek love them so much, in fact, that they are now trying for their 14th.

Robert Kagan, in a brief and wonderfully argued volume on how the world has a nasty habit of spinning off in its own directions, has a message for Americans of all political stripes: Good luck with that one. The cold war may be over, he declares in “The Return of History and the End of Dreams,” but anyone who thinks the result was really “the end of history” — a consensus that liberal democracy is the future — should take another look. “The world has become normal again,” Kagan says in the first sentence of what is less a book than an extended essay. Deeper in, he puts his argument more plainly: “Autocracy is making a comeback.”

2) Polls have shown Obama beating McCain by an even bigger margin than Clinton.
No, he is not in trouble here. The silly idea that because someone lost a Dem primary in Dem state means he or she would lose in November really needs to be stomped out.
The one effect Obama might have is that a larger than usual black and possibly Latino turnout might actually make it easier for the anti-marriage amendment to pass. The vote will likely be close, but among white voters only, it would easily be defeated. Black and Latino voters are more problematic.

Of course any bar that wants to stay open until 4:00 am must pay their city a $2,500.00 "fee" which smaller bars will have a tough time coming up with but not the bigger bars.
Great, Minnesota can now look forward to a bunch of drunk repiglicans tapping their toes in public restrooms or looking for hookers who supply diapers.
