Wiki:
Stupak lives in Menominee, Michigan, with his wife, Laurie, who is a former mayor of Menominee. Their son, Ken, graduated from Pepperdine University School of Law in 2006 and resides in California. The Stupaks also had a son, Bart Jr., who committed suicide in May 2000.
While in Washington, DC, Stupak rents a room at the C Street facility of The Family, a Christian organization which operates the property as a tax-exempt church and a residence for several congressmen and senators.
When asked if he takes part in "fellowship" activities at the Family's C Street Center, Stupak said that he just rents a room, but does not know what goes on there. Stupak refuses to "discuss what goes on there, because I'm not there. ... Are there other activities going on there? Yes. But what goes on and things like that, I don't know. I have my room there." Pressed again about whether he's "involved" in any "activities" at the house, Stupak responded, "I have a room there. And I participate in a Tuesday night dinner once in a while there. ... So there is no regimen. There is no group stuff I have to do. ... You guys ... are grasping at straws that's not there. I rent a room there." "I do not belong to any such group. I don't know what you are talking about. ... I have no affiliation," he adds.[3]
The Stupak Amendment is an amendment to America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 written by Rep. Stupak.

I was just reading an article about a boarded-up house here in Portland that's a magnet for crime, drugs, etc. It's owned by a gas station that won't raze it 'cause it's cheaper to board it up and abandon it. The city task force that should be dealing with it has mostly been laid off, because the recession has taken a big bite out of permit fees. Plus, businesses in the vicinity are suffering.
And raising (or reallocating) taxes to deal with this property and hundreds of others like it is out of the question, obviously...even though it costs the city a fortune every time the cops respond to some disturbance (e.g., homeless people trying to spend one fucking night out of the rain).
This country really is an abject fucking failure.

Since governments can confiscate property for roads and even stadiums, why not confiscate abandoned property.
Take it over, use it as official homeless shelters. You might even be able to refurb them on the cheap. Some homeless people have construction trade skills, so this isn't an unreasonable plan.

Since governments can confiscate property for roads and even stadiums, why not confiscate abandoned property.
OMG SOCIALISM!!
I think there are ways to make that work, especially in conjunction with teaching people building trades etc. Unfortunately, seizing what is usually bank property isn't a good tactic for political longevity.
On the bright side, Portland has managed to turn a bunch of vacant lots into food courts, most of which are in disadvantaged areas. The overhead is very low, so it's great for start-ups. And good for residents too, obviously.

They did that in many large urban areas after the riots in the '60's. The vacant lots are, in many cases, still there.

In many cases it's a foreclosure, with a bank that forced the issue.
Right now till the bank posts a quit-claim, the property is in limbo. The previous owner can't move back in, the bank won't finish the forclosure, so no-one is taking care of the property, letting it rot.

I think it tends to be somewhat risky regardless, inasmuch as its one of those issues (like healthcare generally) where people's minds change with their circumstances. And you always run the risk of someone in your family getting one.

Well, like I said. If the owner had any money, it wouldn't be in foreclosure. I don't know what the answer is, but it costs money to fix up the property, and I don't know where that money is supposed to come from. It also costs money to tear it down, and a vacant lot benefits no one and doesn't do anything for adjacent property either.
If the economy improves, the problem will largely fix itself. If the economy doesn't improve, the problem will fester. But either solution you propose either will not or cannot happen.

Anyway those public nuisance building in Berkeley could be (depending on what people wanted) taken over by the city, or granted to the neighborhood association, who'd then take responsibility. What they typically did was to clean up the building, making it habitable, and appealing, and the association would then sell it on the open market, getting some or all of their investment in time, material and money back. Or just make it a rental property with better management than before.

The implicit assumption is that if you like public schools you hate children. I'd call that a damn fool assumption. Some charter schools are good. Some are lousy. Some public schools are great. Pick your reason:
- stupidity

- ignorance
- dogma
- hatred of the American people
- provincialism (if the rest of the world does it, we'll do the opposite)
- fear of letting the other party "win"

It is not often that a political party puts more than $750,000 behind a candidate in a high-profile Congressional race, only to see the intended beneficiary endorse the opposition....
Besides tapping the group’s treasury on behalf of a defector, it also raised questions about the capabilities of the Republican organization, which had already lost a special election in a Republican-leaning New York district earlier this year. It has now been beaten by Democrats in five consecutive contested special elections — the political version of going one on one.

Tens of thousands of South Korean workers have held a rally to protest against plans to change the country's labour laws.
The Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) said more than 150,000 members attended the demonstration in the capital, Seoul, on Saturday, while police estimated the crowd at 60,000 people.
The government has said it will begin enforcing laws next year to prohibit companies from paying wages to full-time union representatives and to allow multiple unions for each workplace.
"We, the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, are here to defend the labour unions and labour movement in this land," said Kang Choong-ho, a spokesman for FKTU.
"We will thwart the government's policy by mobilising every means possible. If necessary, we will stage a general strike," Kang said.
“Staff over there did a good job given the hand they were dealt,” said Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican leader. “What it does show is that New York has a flawed process.”

Heavy clashes have been reported at the Saudi-Yemeni border as Saudi forces battle Yemeni rebels for the fifth straight day.
Saudi commanders said troops were shelling suspected Houthi positions on Saturday and plumes of smoke could be seen rising above the Jebel al-Dukhan peak that marks the frontier near the border town of Al-Khubah.
A medical official said seven Saudis, four of them women civilians, had been killed and 126 people wounded since the fighting erupted on Tuesday.
The Shia Houthis, fighting their own government over alleged discrimination, had also claimed to have captured some Saudi soldiers on Friday

Charter schools are public schools.

Yes and no. They are paid for with public money, but they are largely outside of the usual union contracts, and in some cases, the charter schools are designed to do nothing but break unions.
What many fans of charter schools overlook is pretty much what DWD said. Charter schools have ways of skimming off the cream of the student body, and obtaining disproportionate funding. One reason why a lot of public schools are having a tough time is because they have to educate everyone, including some who are so psychologically damaged that they make a teacher's job impossible.
Here's an example. My daughter is teaching in a school near New Orleans. There are thirty in her class. Eleven have to take special anger management classes.
Thirty in a class is bad enough. That a third of these are having a hard time managing their anger is more than a little troubling.
The public schools are mostly working pretty well. They'd work a whole lot better if we would spend the money on them and the students that is needed, and if we raised the status of teachers (with money and with better conditions and with treating teachers as if they were worthy of respect). Really, this isn't rocket science. America had the best public schools in the world for some of its citizens before Brown v. Board of Education, and utterly awful schools for everyone else. What should have happened then was to make all schools that good, and allow any student to go to any school, independent of where they lived. Instead, lots of money and political influence lit out for the 'burbs, and the inner city schools were starved of talent, money and influence. Oddly enough, many schools deteriorated.
Not surprising, is it?

Depends on the state, actually (he pointed out pedantically). My daughter attends a "charter school," but it's entirely a state school, a creature of the local school district.
Texas has "private" charters schools, but they were so disastrous even Texas couldn't overlook the failure. (Money was misused, not spent on classrooms, textbooks, etc.) So "charter" now means particular schools set up by school districts. Main limitation is they can control class size (it's not a school "zoned" for an area of the district) and they can't have sports teams. Which is fine.
They "pick" students only in the sense you have to apply, and enrollment is limited. But, as I say, this varies by state, so....

Excuse me, but that's seen through rosy glasses indeed. My prosperous friends with children in NYC live in e.g. the Lincoln Center district where the public school is a diamond. On the other hand, my friends who live out in Clinton in Brooklyn had to home school rather than have their kids endure the public schools. The basic level of administration in, especially, big city public schools is ATROCIOUS. Many of the people who administer those schools should be in jail. I bet you could walk 2 miles from the Lab School and see "schools" that are unbearable.
I'm in favor of public schools, but you can read hardcore reactionaries like Jonathon Kozol to see how terrible traditional public schools treat many students.
