OT: Humanists are suing the government's exam agency over its decision to prevent a board giving humanism equal status to faiths in a religious education GCSE.
The OCR board had proposed allowing children to study humanism in as much depth as Christianity, Islam and Judaism in the GCSE but the move was barred by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority's regulator Ofqual. It said the syllabus put forward meant students would be able to study only humanism, rather than any of the major religions, which meant it did not fulfil their regulatory criteria.
The British Humanist Association (BHA), backed by supporters including Philip Pullman and AC Grayling, this week issued proceedings for a judicial review, claiming it was discriminatory and in breach of the QCA's own criteria and the European convention on human rights, which gives non-religious beliefs equal status. Andrew Copson, BHA director of education, said: "It threatens to turn back the progress of recent decades towards a more inclusive, educationally valid and objective subject of RE."
Humanism has been included in RE for more than 30 years. The OCR curriculum would have been the first time it was given equal weighting to religions in a GCSE.

20 And Noah began to be a husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
21 and he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.
23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness.
24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan;
a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.
26 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.
27 God shall enlarge Japheth,
and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

LOS ANGELES - A spokeswoman for the Metrolink commuter rail service says the probable cause of the collision that killed at least 18 people was the failure of a Metrolink engineer to stop his train at a red signal.
Metrolink spokeswoman Denise Tyrrell said Saturday the engineer worked for a subcontractor that has been used by Metrolink since 1998.
She said she had no further details about the signal's location and wouldn't say if the engineer had survived Friday's crash.
The commuter train collided head-on with a freight train in the Los Angeles suburb of Chatsworth.

not good - Five bombs have ripped through busy shopping areas of India's capital, Delhi, within minutes of each other, killing at least 18 people, police say.
The explosions, which also injured about 80 people, are not thought to have been very powerful but happened in crowded areas.
Two unexploded bombs were also found and defused, police said.
More than 400 people have died since October 2005 in bomb attacks on Indian cities such as Ahmedabad and Bangalore.
India has blamed Islamist militant groups for these previous bombings.
CNN-IBN, a local TV news channel, said it had received an e-mail before the blasts from a group calling itself the "Indian Mujahideen".
It was meant as a joke, "Alvin", because certain individuals (ahem) kept saying that Brooklyn Girl and others were just his sockpuppets. Just a joke, dear.

Steve wandered sprightly into the Irish bar where he presumed the Drinking Liberally event was to be held. Sadly he was misinformed. Nonetheless, Steve stood there at the bar, friendly to a fault.
The half-Irish, half-English barkeep launched into a long joke the point of which was the inferiority of non-Irish Catholics. As the barkeeps arms flailed an aged Dago hooker came up to Steve.
"Hey, Handsome," she purred. She subsequently began hacking violently and ended up spitting her dentures into her half-finished glass of Irish whiskey.
When she finished, she rolled a billous eye at Steve.
"Wanna, good-time, Handsome?"
Yes, in fact Steve wanted a good-time.

"“The McCain-Palin ticket, they don’t want to debate the Obama-Biden ticket on issues because they are running on eight more years of what we’ve just seen. And they know it,” Obama said. “As a consequence what they’re going to spend the next seven, eight weeks doing is trying to distract you.
“They’re going to talk about pigs and they’re going to talk about lipstick, they’re going to talk about Paris Hilton, they’re going to talk about Britney Spears. They will try to distort my record and they will try to undermine your trust in what the Democrats intend to do.” [...]
The McCain campaign criticized Obama for showing “zero restraint” given the storm and said “today’s attacks mark a new low from Barack Obama.”
The Obama camp’s response was even tougher. “We will take no lectures from John McCain who is cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. “His discredited ads with disgusting lies are running all over the country today. He runs a campaign not worthy of the office his is seeking.” "

He runs a campaign not worthy of the office his is seeking.” "

not good either - The Pakistan Army has been ordered to retaliate against any action by foreign troops inside the country, army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said on Friday.
General Abbas' statement came as top brass of the Pakistan Army in their meeting on second day fully endorsed their chief's warning that no country would be allowed to violate Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
A press release issued after the 111th Corps Commanders Conference quoted General Ashfaq Kayani as saying that "all elements of the National Power under the new democratic leadership will safeguard the territorial integrity of Pakistan with full support and backing of the people of Pakistan."
General Kayani's statement on Wednesday regarding army's resolve to defend borders at all costs against the backdrop of repeated US threats of cross-border raids inside Pakistan territory bordering Afghanistan has been widely acclaimed in the country. It has refurbished army's image that had touched rock bottom because of its involvement in internal politics under Pervez Musharraf.
Political leaders and the media, while welcoming Kayani's bold stand, made an embarrassing comparison to relatively feeble response from democratic government. Officials here said Kayani's expression," under the new democratic leadership" was designed to dispel the impression that the army was competing with the government in winning popular acclaim.

Something I had to throw (literally) together at the last minute when I was sheltering a friend and her child.
A cup of rice and a can of corn (drained and rinsed) in the pot to cook, along with a small chopped onion. Two skinless boneless chicken breasts in the George Foreman grill.
Once the rice had cooked, it was "fluffed" with a fork, the chicken breasts were sliced into small pieces, added to the pot, along with a can of sliced white potatoes (drained and rinsed). Let it sit for 10 minutes to warm the potatoes. And finally, a jar of mild salsa was added to the pot and everything was well mixed together, and served with warmed sourdough bread.
Really, it was so much better tasting than it had any right to be.

going from bad to worse - ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - The furor intensified Friday over Washington's decision to pursue Islamic militant targets inside Pakistan, with opposition lawmakers threatening the country could pull out of the war on terror if the U.S. refuses to respect its borders.
About 100 protesters burned American flags after the latest missile attack left at least 12 people dead in the North Waziristan region of the troubled northwest. Residents said they heard the sound of propeller-driven U.S. Predator drones circling overhead before the explosions.
President Bush secretly approved more aggressive cross-border operations in July, current and former American officials have told The Associated Press.
This is their best. Now who do you think this namestealer is? Why Simels of course.

Echidne porn:
She wept into the evening, those long endless gloamings. The wild blue grass consoled her, caressed her tumbled hair and long limbs. So much was lost and so much was to be remembered. From her tears a deep meadow drank. At last her sobs lessened to a sigh. Echidne layed herself, inconsolably beneath a red-berry bush and slept.
In the night, a cold wind stirred. Echidne woke but clenched her eyes.
A deep voice spoke from the gloom, "I am the Waning Moon Echidne, I am come."

Around 250,000 worshippers have turned out to hear Pope Benedict XVI celebrate an open-air mass in Paris.
Many people spent the night at the Invalides complex, south of the river Seine in the French capital, waiting to hear him speak.
It is the pontiff's first visit to France since his election in 2005.
Later, the Pope will fly to the pilgrimage site of Lourdes, where the faithful believe the Virgin Mary appeared to a young girl 150 years ago.
France is a Roman Catholic country, but Sunday Mass attendance is now below 10% and strict laws separate church and state.

Five civilians and seven militants have been killed in north-west Pakistan in a suspected US missile attack, local officials say.
Missiles hit two buildings near Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan region on the Afghan border.
It has emerged that President Bush recently authorised US raids against militants in Pakistan without prior approval from Islamabad.
There is growing concern in Pakistan over unilateral US military action.
Early reports said all, or nearly all, of the dead were Taleban fighters killed by one missile.
But later reports from the scene said missiles hit two buildings - in one three women and two children were killed, and in the other seven Taleban militants died.
The missiles were fired from a drone - an unmanned US plane - local people said.
Last week I canned four quarts with a diced jalapeno in each quart.

‘Obama Waffles’ featuring racist, stereotyped images sold at Values Voter Summit.
At the Values Voter Summit this weekend, vendors sold an item called “Obama Waffles” featuring a racist cartoon of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) on the box front — with “popping eyes and big, thick lips” — and another image of him wearing an Arab-like headdress on its top flap. Its creators, Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, said it was meant as “political satire,” and sold the box for $10 from a booth at the Family Research Council event. CNN’s Lou Dobbs stopped by the booth and exclaimed, “My wife will love this!” A photo shows Dobbs with a box of the mix in his hand.

Interviews show that Ms. Palin runs an administration that puts a premium on loyalty and secrecy. The governor and her top officials sometimes use personal e-mail accounts for state business; dozens of e-mail messages obtained by The New York Times show that her staff members studied whether that could allow them to circumvent subpoenas seeking public records.
Rick Steiner, a University of Alaska professor, sought the e-mail messages of state scientists who had examined the effect of global warming on polar bears. (Ms. Palin said the scientists had found no ill effects, and she has sued the federal government to block the listing of the bears as endangered.) An administration official told Mr. Steiner that it would cost $468,784 to process his request.
When Mr. Steiner finally obtained the e-mail messages — through a federal records request — he discovered that state scientists had in fact agreed that the bears were in danger, records show.
OK....you're now beginning to bore me.

WASILLA, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin lives by the maxim that all politics is local, not to mention personal.
So when there was a vacancy at the top of the State Division of Agriculture, she appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to the $95,000-a-year directorship. That 100% turned into some moderate winds and cloudiness but not a single drop of water from the sky. It IS oppressively hot and humid today, though. Dang it, we need some rain.

Galveston dodged a bullet in more ways than one...
http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com...l/index.html?
hp
An Observation | 2:26 p.m. Obviously, there is a pressing need to learn more about the state of Galveston following the storm, and many officials and reporters are rushing to provide answers. In the meantime, Dr. Jeff Masters, a leading meteorologist-blogger, has a simple observation today that sets an important baseline, at least:
Galveston is not destroyed
Although Ike caused heavy damage by flooding Galveston with a 12-foot storm surge, the city escaped destruction thanks to its 15.6-foot sea wall (the wall was built 17 feet high, but has since subsided about 2 feet). The surge was able to flow into Galveston Bay and flood the city from behind, but the wall prevented a head-on battering by the surge from the ocean side. Galveston was fortunate that Ike hit the city head-on, rather than just to the south. Ike’s highest storm surge occurred about 50 miles to the northeast of Galveston, over a lightly-populated stretch of coast. Galveston was also lucky that Ike did not have another 12-24 hours over water. In the 12 hours prior to landfall, Ike’s central pressure dropped 6 mb, and the storm began to rapidly organize and form a new eyewall. If Ike had had another 12-24 hours to complete this process, it would have been a Category 4 hurricane with 135-145 mph winds that likely would have destroyed Galveston. The GFDL model was consistently advertising this possibility, and it wasn’t far off the mark. It was not clear to me until late last night that Ike would not destroy Galveston and kill thousands of people. Other hurricane scientists I conversed with yesterday were of the same opinion.
Here at the cat wards, we have a feral male with a possible broken foot who has learned to run fast on 3 legs. He is living on the table next to his food. We are eating in the dining room.

Last time I went through this, there was no place I could put her where I couldn't hear her. Clearly.
Finally about the third morning, about 3 am, I went and grabbed her by the scruff of the neck, looked her in the eye with murder in mind; she looked at me and went

I put her down, tried to go back to sleep. Finally got the check from the Humane Society to fix her the next day.

Yes, you could really see how the inner core of Ike was starting to fire up in a big way right before it was snuffed out by landfall. And they really were lucky that the path of the eye wasn't a like 30 miles to the left of where it went. If all that had been blowing directly onshore, the seawall probably wouldn't have held.

From Digby.......
My reader JN from Wisconsin writes in with news of the latest vote suppression effort:
The state elections agency is investigating complaints about a massive campaign mailing Republican Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign has directed toward Wisconsin Democrats and other voters.
Each mailing includes at least one copy of the state application for an absentee ballot that has the address of a local clerk and a box for postage printed on the other side. But in some cases, the incorrect clerk's address is printed on the application, leading some Democrats to wonder if the Arizona senator's campaign is deliberately trying to get them to apply for absentee ballots in places where they aren't eligible to vote.
"They're trying to knock me off the rolls," said Democrat Beverly Jambois, of Middleton. "I can't tell you how upsetting it is to me. This is how you win elections? By disenfranchising other voters?"
Her household received the flier this week addressed to her husband, Robert, a lawyer for the state Department of Transportation. The couple are registered to vote in Middleton, but the absentee ballot application was addressed to the city clerk's office in Madison. A McCain campaign spokeswoman said in a statement the mailing mistakes are "certainly not intentional" but she wouldn't answer questions. The statement also said the mailing went to "potential supporters across the spectrum."
Mark Jefferson, executive director of the state GOP, said the mailing is not intended to keep people from the polls and that the wrong absentee ballot applications resulted from incorrect information in databases used for the mailing.
"You do the best with the lists you have, and no list is perfect," Jefferson said. "There is certainly no type of suppression effort going on." Jefferson said the mailing was directed to hundreds of thousands of voters.

That's why it's good to always review Interfax, Jazeera, and especially Reuters.
The big American newspapers are a lot like that. A Double Edge Sword.
You love 'em or you hate 'em.
You just have to watch who's doing the writing, that's all. Witness Maureen "I wanna be another Safire" Dowd, or what Judith Miller did to our country in the NY Times.

DWD: I'm not there, haven't examind you, and i no longer practice. But I'd throw you in the brig, start you on an IV and work you up, from the sound of it. And rather aggressively. What you describe is more worrisome, seems to me, than a distant silent heart attack uncomplicated by arrhythmia, congestive failure or major muscle loss.
Probably, it's something easy. You take a lot of pain meds, which slow the GI tract down. Depression will do that. But there are other things to check out, especially as you've been on the pain meds for a while without a new prescription, and been depressed for a while, on and off, and never had such symptoms. You need to be worked up, preferably by that old fashioned sort of person, a thorough general internal medical doc, and expeditiously.
Sorry to sound, perhaps, overly alarmist, but that's my take on what you're saying.

You lose weight, get weak, relatively quickly under such circumstances. If you're drinking enough, your kidneys will almost always keep your salts in balance unless they're diseased, or you get dehydrated, until late in the course. If you go on a starvation diet save sufficient fluids and electrolytes, and aren't malnourished to start with, can take six to eight weeks to die.
What needs to be done, relatively quickly, is to quantitate exactly how much is going in, how much is going out, how well the kidneys are working, exclude a raft of troubles too long to summarize otherwise, and support with adequate nutrition.

Moe, I've just been calculating - were I to move up to BC, between the covered health insurance at a miniscule amount/month, and the thoughtful provincially sponsored prescription insurance, I'd acquire/re-acquire about an extra 15%/month of income. That's a lot of money. That makes me look at the situation rather more closely.
Oh, I am drinking enough and probably getting enough food so I will not starve by Monday. (As I said I did manage a bowl of soup) But I am not getting better. I just don't understand. I have seen the doctor twice this week and still no answer.
It would seem to me that a SERIES of tests is necessary. Why do we have hospitals and laboratories and such?

So it worries me so much that it feels like anger, probably.
We are an amazingly complacent country,by and large, and very prone to that whole "I know better than teh experts" routine. On the right, it's climate denial and creationism. On the left, it tends to take other forms. But it all boils down to the "Ah knows what ah knows" school of risk assessment.

But in 1995, Ms. Palin, then a city councilwoman, told colleagues that she had noticed the book "Daddy’s Roommate" on the shelves and that it did not belong there, according to Ms. Chase and Mr. Stein. Ms. Chase read the book, which helps children understand homosexuality, and said it was inoffensive; she suggested that Ms. Palin read it.
"Sarah said she didn’t need to read that stuff," Ms. Chase said. "It was disturbing that someone would be willing to remove a book from the library and she didn’t even read it."
"I’m still proud of Sarah," she added, "but she scares the bejeebers out of me."

It's a mystery to me. I mean, I could come up with a bunch of armchair psychoanalyzing about pretending you have more control than you do, but the whole thing is just way too bizarre.
Which is why I'm not very confident about this election, actually. I think the attitude we're talking about here is a lot more "real," in terms of influencing decisions and defining worldviews, than anything science or logic has to offer. Those of us who live in a world where it's not possible to know in advance how many people a hurricane will kill, or how much heating is "good" for the earth, are in a shrinking minority, I'm afraid.

Adam: diabetes, in particular, as you doubtless know well, gets far less complicated if managed meticulously. It's furiously cost-effective to do that. But in this country, while the Feds will pay for your dialysis, if your kidneys fail, usually, due to poorly controlled diabetes, they won't pay to keep your daughter out of trouble. Disgusting, stupid, immoral, penny-wise and pound-foolish.
DWD: that's a lot of weight to lose if it's forced upon you. Like I said. I wouldn't mess around. And your on/off depression and opiate intake have been going on a while without much change. He should be looking for something else. And Gromit's right; if you can't get what you need any other way, hit the ER, which, at the very least, will refer you to a new doc after doing, probably, a bunch of blood work and, if you complain of belly pain too, a CAT scan or some such, making sure you don't have something really acute going on that's been missed. Your story is worrisome. It needs to either be put out of its misery by good news, or nailed down to something that can be fixed. Wouldn't mess around.
OK? Hang in there...

Let's the nominee is named John Smith. I was about to give up because no one in the gang was here. But up popped stunt women. Hey there, you have to be a girl to to stunts. A woman can't do it. What's wrong with you? Are you a Delta Dawn dreaming about days gone by? Is simels going to take you to his place in the sky?

If you haven't read this, you must. And send it out like the repukes do about Obama.

I wonder why Lubyanka thinks anyone here will be upset if he insults Andrew Sullivan?
If Sullivan were crawling through the Sahara on bleeding knees and elbows, I might drill a hole in Lubyanka's bladder and insert a crazy straw so that he could suck out out a few drops of bloody bacteria-ridden piss.
But it'd only be 'cause I saw a scorpion a few feet ahead, and wanted him to have the strength to reach it.
