Of course, he means White American Civilians when he says "people."

Dead Iraqis and American military obviously don't wake America up, since they aren't, you know people

GravatarThe really problem is that one suicide bomber on one bus killing 8 or 9 people will be treated as 'another 9/11'.
With FOXNews, CCN and the others leading the psychotic reaction to such an event, what chance does sanity have?

GravatarThe Bush administration used the events of 9/11 to launch an unnecessary war, curtail the rights of Americans, torture, illegally spy, and violate the Constitution. The right-wing can’t wait for “another 9/11″ so they can take it to the next level.

And just what would that level be? "Heil, Bush!"?

I'm at a loss here as to where we go next as they ratchet the Grand War on Terror up a notch.

If I'm not with 'em, I'm in a concentration camp? Gitmo? What?

And damned if one single word was ever written about the little problem.... Civic pride is a wonderful thing it is.

GravatarFourteen characteristics of fascism:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

Gravatarthe walmart here is just as expensive as any other store here

"Hey, I don't shop at Wal-Mart. that's for the little schmucks. What do I care?"

[Cynicus translation, patent pending]
-

GravatarAnd it's too early to start sniffing glue:
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

GravatarCurrent events in the California market:
During the peak of the housing boom in California — from 2003 to 2005 — construction and real estate-related jobs accounted for nearly a third of all new jobs created in the state, said Ryan Ratcliff, an economist for the UCLA Anderson Forecast. Today, he said, they account for about 10%.

Experts estimate that California could lose more than 200,000 real estate-related jobs before the housing market bottoms out.

GravatarWe diabetics are allowed 1-Tbs sized servings of ketchup, occasionally.

GravatarKetchup is gross.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

Gravatarsittenpretty, my personal experience is that prices for nearly everything are lower in America than in Europe. GravatarConservative America:

Michael Crowley notes an unremarkable human-interest story out of Joplin, Mo., about a middle-aged man who has a home, but prefers to live in his car. Apparently, the man, Steven Graham, is annoying his neighbors quite a bit, “disturbing the peace with loud music and obscenity-laced tirades.”

A neighbor said, “Every day he’s out there. He never goes into the house. He sleeps out there, he eats out there, he watches TV, he plays guitar…. Everything that you do in your house, he does out there.”

Graham acknowledges that he spends most of his time in his car, but says there’s a reason.

An extension cord runs from the house to the car, providing power for a 13-inch TV that rests in the passenger seat, an oscillating fan and a radio.

“I get better reception there than I do in there,” he said, pointing at the house. “I listen to Rush (Limbaugh) every day just about.”

GravatarMorning, rational people.

Gravatar'morning, Diane.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

I think we're pretty much 14 for 14, batting 1000, etc.

Doesn't seem to me that credit card rates are low.

GravatarFourteen characteristics of fascism:

Historians, political scientists, and other assorted wonks have been trying to formulate elaborate definitions of "generic" fascism for decades.

But none of them are really satisfactory because they fail to take into account the crucial role that violence plays in Fascist thinking.

If someone doesn't think positively about violence (whether foreign, domestic, or both) they aren't fascist, no matter how reactionary or hyper-nationalist their thinking might be otherwise.

For a long time I stopped short at characterizing the American Right as Fascist because I doubted whether there was a true commitment to violence as a matter of principle.

Don't think there's much room for doubt now.

GravatarI suspect that for some of the more devious (Straussian) people on the Right this concept has been there all along; it's just been closeted for obvious reasons. For others it's been a recent evolution in their thinking.

Sadly, it's beginning to look like their strategy is working.

I'm gonna go off and chomp on some croissants.

Mmmmmmmm!

Gravataramerican's weren't this fucking scared during the cold war with 10,000 nukes pointed at us with only a hair trigger between fubar and peace.

whenever i hear some fuckwad on tv say that 'they're out to destroy america!', i want to puke.

if a couple of planes used as bombs or a couple of large explosions somewhere can destroy america, we are already fucked.

the only thing the powers that be are trying to preserve is the status quo of said power. never fucking forget that.

GravatarThe modern Republican rhetoric-

No more terrorist attacks show how effective Bush's anti-terror policies are

More terrorist attacks (another 9/11) will cause Americans to embrace Bush's anti-terror policies

How can you lose?

Marcellina is not confused. LL Bean is also anti-abortion, although I have not personally seen their donations listed, people around here switched to Eddie Bauer, more politically correct.

First few yards, any jeans will. After that, better to have an 'S' on your chest, or riding leathers.

GravatarCynicus - that may be as may be - but in the case of Bean, it's the same crackpot 'family member' being cited again and again as anti- this and anti- that. She is not LL Bean - she is a granddaughter of Mr. Bean. She does not control or have any influence on the Company. The Company is in favor of moose, treats its employees as tho they were human beings and engages in the politics of preservation. They are not General Motors.

How much sewing machine activity is there still in the US? It's got to be pretty minimal especially among the young.
No???
.

GravatarMalkin:

I met Bykofsky several years ago. He’s a veteran newsie and all-around great guy, but I think this column was as tone-deaf as Steve Levitt’s whimsical Think Like a Terrorist blog post at the NYTimes. He wants more Americans murdered on American soil to “sew us back together?”

We don’t need healing. We need the half of the country that doesn’t believe we are under threat from global jihad to wake up and smell the suicide bomb smoke.

Maybe the "half of the country" you're talking about doesn't piss their pants every time some says, "BOO!"

No.

One of the major employers of female immigrants is the Los Angeles garment district. One whole building in downtown Los Angeles houses women hunched over sewing machines (the small ones).

GravatarWas it something I said?

GravatarUndoubtedly.

GravatarWe don’t need healing. We need the half of the country that doesn’t believe we are under threat from global jihad to wake up and smell the suicide bomb smoke.

Half the country might be 'smelling the smoke' of dealing with...
Cancer
Heart Disease
Accidental Death
and so on which has killed well over 13 million Americans since "9/11".
Understanding the threats to your well being and dealing with them proportionally seems like rational behavior. Spending a trillion dollars pretending you can stop a suicide bomber who might kill 10 people on a bus is insanity.

Better to buy a good used one. The cheap ones never work quite right and are very frustrating.

GravatarOne of life's simple joys is leftover brownie batter in the mixing bowl.

GravatarWhen the threat is clearly identified as "authoritarian religious extremists" of ANY stripe, then maybe we can talk about it rationally.

Of course there's industrial activity. I meant residental. The person who buys a sewing machine and uses it at home.

Looks like you're right, those Bean ladies using their own inherited funds, at least what I can Google of the issue.

Linda Bean Folkers, the granddaughter and heiress to the fortune of L.L. Bean, has always been a supporter of the most radical and insane right wing causes and politicians.

Linda Lorraine Bean's campaign for Maine's First Congressional District: Ms. Bean was permitted to use an L. L. Bean boot stitching room for a television advertisement

GravatarI don't know all that many people, but I know several who enjoy creating things on sewing machines -- and the machines are only getting more capable as time goes on.

GravatarI'm wearing Bean Jeans as we type. Denim not as thick as brand-new 501s, maybe; but always at a way better price.

Gravatar"Before you throw out the baby with the bathwater, remember that the majority of Democrats did NOT vote to expand FISA, and ALL the Republicans did."

George Bush on Thursday tried to get a dismissal of the NSA lawsuit citing the NEW FISA law he just signed in and that the DEMOCRATIC WEASELS in congress gave him!!!!

I just had mine in the shop for a tune-up and it's running very sweet. It's a Singer. From 1902. (Three owners - Aunt Lillian, Mummy, Me.)

GravatarI'm fairly inept at sewing and such, but I have a lot of colleagues who knit. It's a good hobby for someone employed in the theater, as it fills in all the time one is waiting around.

GravatarOf course there's industrial activity. I meant residental. The person who buys a sewing machine and uses it at home.

Sorry, AO, I was being snarky at your expense.

I suspect that home sewing isn't being done for a number of reasons.

Most women have to work, and then come home to housewifely duties such as cooking and cleaning. That doesn't leave much time for sewing.

Probably more important, however, is that WalMart, Target, Kohl's, KMart all sell foreign produced clothes so cheaply that it's hardly worth the effort.

GravatarYou're right about the brownie batter, Marcellina -
chocolate cake batter leavings used to get me going, too.

GravatarRead what you wrote: it's shoddy, dishonest thinking.
plantsman, areligious

The idea that Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the democrats, after their month - long break are going to storm back into Washington with righteous rage and indignation, re - do the FISA legislation, and finally hold Bush accountable, is patently ludicrous. We need to rid ourselves of Reid and Pelosi, same as Bush.

GravatarMaybe the "half of the country" you're talking about doesn't piss their pants every time some says, "BOO!"

The Malkin Marriage and friend Steve Sailer would prefer you to piss your pants when they say "Brown person".

GravatarWow, Toucari; one recommendation: wear gloves.

GravatarBingo, Diane. Sewing is mostly not worth the effort anymore, with all the cheap clothing one can find.

GravatarI don't think Stuge Boy was calling for the deaths of 3,000 people.

I think he was just saying that a strike that killed 300 or so would probably be just as effective...
herk

The media coverage of the 9/11 attacks was of course spontaneous and live. The MSM has had 5 years to practice their techniques of terrorism coverage and have their roles in it pretty well rehearsed from reporters to politicians to pundits.
Not 3000, not even 300 but even 3 deaths directly tied to a Muslim suicide bomber in the US WILL get coverage equivalent to the 9/11 attacks. The Nation will go beserk with the media leading the way.
After what we've seen in the last 5 years, how can it be otherwise?
.

Yes, but at my age knee pads are just as important.

GravatarNeither Reid nor Pelosi voted to expand FISA, damning them for the actions of others whom they do not control is childish and counter-productive, in my opinion. Using an Elephant gun when tweezers are what's needed is just silly.

Gravatarshoddy and dishonest is a pretty good description of the reasoning behind all the rationalizations used by democrats, blue dog and just plain old yellow coward, in signing off on the FISA legislation. I hope every one of those traitorous cowardly slime gets mobbed by their constituents when the get home.

Gravatar"Neither Reid nor Pelosi voted to expand FISA, damning them for the actions of others whom they do not control is childish and counter-productive.."

They are supposed to be the leadership of the democratic party in the house and senate, and they have no control? Why not? Where is the party discipline? Why is "impeachment off the table?", in the words of Nancy Pelosi? They should be damned for their own actions and inaction. They need to be held accountable for allowing the criminality of the Bush Administration to continue, unabated.

GravatarThus the bizarro world of GOPerBush
-heading into September's self-imposed benchmark
- after a continuum of F.U.'s that resisted all benchmarks.

things are looking as bleak for US remaining engaged with this occupation as they should look

- but don't let that stop anyone, no.

Gravatar"I won't attack righties columnists gone wild, just progressive blogs"-O'Reilly

GravatarThe right has the nerve to say that we are “blame America first liberals,” that we crave defeat in Iraq and welcome every bit of bad news out of the occupation. Not true at all, and quite offensive, but they say it a lot.

And then here they are, WISHING for another 9-11. On their fellow Americans.

Worst. Hypocrites. Ever.

GravatarRepublicans love terrorist attacks. That's the bottom line.
